Marian Ann Hackman, 78, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Altru Medical Center in Grand Forks, ND.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Little Flower Catholic Church in Rugby, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Father Kevin Boucher will serve as celebrant.
Visitation will be held today from 3-7 p.m. and Friday from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at The Anderson Funeral Home in Rugby. A Rosary and Vigil Prayer Service will begin at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Louise Haseloff
Mary Louise Haseloff, 86, of Cando, ND, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at Towner County Living Center of Cando.
Memorial services will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Devils Lake, ND. Interment will be at East View cemetery, Vernon, TX.
Mary Louise Pilgreen was born March 21, 1918 in Ft. Smith, Ark., to Zerrel and Margaret Raye (McClendon) Pilgreen. She married
Herbert Haseloff in Vernon, TX.
Mary is survived by her children, Judith Raye (Joseph) Andrews of Egeland, ND and Robert Zerrel (Susie) Haseloff of Brandon, MS; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Herbert, and her great-grandson, Jared Baca.

Carl "Carly" W. A. Friedrich, 92 of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Warwick, ND died on Thursday, June 3, 2004 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Funeral Services for Carl will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Devils Lake. Rev. will officiate and burial will be in the Warwick Lutheran cemetery, rural Warwick.
Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service.

Laurice Ness, 86, of Benson, Minnesota formerly of Devils Lake, ND, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at his home in Benson. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 9, 2004, 11:00 AM at Christ Free Lutheran Church in Devils Lake. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5 to 8pm with a 7PM Prayer Service all at the church. Leona M. Janowski
Leona M. Janowski, 90, of Devils Lake, ND formerly of Munich, ND, died Friday, July 30, 2004 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. John Aerts and Fr. Joseph Christensen will concelebrate the Mass. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, Munich, ND.
Reading the Scripture Lessons will be Cheryl Hefta and gift bearers will be Marissa Regan and Sadie Hefta. Music will be provided by Audrey Myklebust, organist and Kevin Regan, soloist.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, today from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 7 p.m. The Rosary will be led by the Catholic Daughters.
Visitation on Wednesday will be from 9-11 a.m. and visitation at the church will be one hour prior to the Mass.

Leona Mathilda Nosbusch was born on April 11, 1914 in South Prairie Township, rural Velva, ND, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Tholkes) Nosbusch. At a very young age, she moved with her family to Munich, ND where she was reared and educated. She graduated from Munich High School in 1932. She worked for several years at the family restaurant in Munich.
Leona was united in marriage to Edwin Janowski on Nov. 11, 1942 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Munich. They established their home on the farm Southwest of Munich where they lived and worked through the years. In 1958, they moved into Munich. Edwin died on Oct. 29, 1961. Leona continued to make her home in Munich. In 1993, Leona moved to Devils Lake where she has since made her home.
Leona was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altar Society and Christian Mothers all of Munich. After moving to Devils Lake, Leona became a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Infant of Prague Circle and also the Catholic Daughters.
Leona is survived by her sisters, Dorothy M. Bednar of Devils Lake and Frances A. Michels of Minot, ND; nephews, Harold Michels and Gerald (Debby) Michels, all of Minot; grand-nieces, Lisa Michels, Amy Michels and Kristin Michels; grand-nephew, Dryden Michels; and special friend, Fr. John Aerts of Fargo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin; brothers-in-law, Alphonse S. Michels and John J. Bednar.

Genevieve K. Rutten
Genevieve K. Rutten, 94, a long-time Devils Lake, ND, resident died Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the Heartland Care Center, Devils Lake.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. C.F. Wilhelm will celebrate the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery. Music will be provided by Patty Cote. Gift bearers will be Joan Galleger, Donald Rutten, Dick Rutten and Bob Rutten.
Visitation will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, today from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7 p.m. Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the Mass.
Genevieve K. Rutten was born March 31, 1910 at DesLacs, ND, the daughter of Dr. David Joseph and Josephine (Wolfe) Rutten. At the age of three she moved with her parents to Devils Lake where she was reared and educated. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in the class of 1929. She worked at home for ten years then attended Ellendale State College, Ellendale, ND. She graduated with a Degree in Social Studies and Education. She taught school in Southam, Brocket, Elgin, Walhalla and Warwick. She then taught grade school in Belcourt for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 19 years, retiring in 1970 due to ill health. She returned to Devils Lake where she has since made her home.
Genevieve was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and former member of the Catholic Daughters.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Frederick, Eldon and Dr. H.R. Rutten; sister, Mary O. Miller.

George G. Christian
George G. Christian, 81, died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004 due to complications from an automobile accident.
No memorial services are scheduled at George's request. His ashes will be interred at Malvern Iowa cemetery with a private family ceremony.
George was born April 4, 1923. He served in the U.S. Marines and had various jobs before moving back to Churchs Ferry on a farm owned and operated by the family for over 100 years. George loved farming and horses. He was also a gifted painter, drawer and could build or make anything out of wood. Most of all, George loved being with family and friends. There wasn't anywhere he wouldn't go or anything he wouldn't do for his family. He was a wonderful man, friend, husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
George is survived by his sister, Arvid Dwvorak; 13 children, Gary and Cherri Christian, Craig and Rene Christian, Karen and Randy Peters, Janet Nichol, Kathy and Jim Nichol, Douglas Christian, Dale Christian, Dennis Christian, Mike and Janet Burchett, Doug and Diane Burchett, Pat and Candy Thomas, Linda and Craig Klebe, Lori and Bryan Castle and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan H. Christian, his parents and brother.
Richard K. Hoiland
Richard K. Hoiland, 67, of Alsen, ND, died Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at the Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Funeral Services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at the Zoar Free Lutheran Church, Hampden, ND. Rev. Craig Wentzel will officiate and burial will be in the Storlie cemetery, rural Hampden. Music will be provided by Chuck Damschen, soloist and Linda Harder, organist.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Iverson, Morris Knudson, Chuck Damschen, Dennis Lommen, Larry Ohma and Terry Roppel.
Richard K. Hoiland was born Aug. 25, 1936 at Devils Lake, ND, the son of Theodore and Mabel (Skjerva) Hoiland. He attended the Alsen School through the fifth grade and then attended Hampden, graduating from Hampden High School in the class of 1954. After graduation, he farmed with his dad. In 1959, Richard joined the National Guard and was with the 3662nd Unit out of Camp Grafton. On June 26, 1965, Richard was united in marriage to Diane Landsem at St. Hans Lutheran Church, rural Edmore. In 1971, Richard took over the farming operation and the family moved to the farm four miles East of Alsen where they lived, worked and raised their family. In 1996, he retired from farming but they continued to make their home on the farm. Richard has worked for the United States Postal Service in some capacity since his high school years, working in Hampden, Devils Lake and Starkweather. In 1989, Richard was appointed the Postmaster of the Starkweather Post Office and still held that postion to the present.
Richard was a member of the Zoar Free Lutheran Church, holding many offices on the Board and always very active in the church. He also served on the Storlie Township Board for many years. Richard enjoyed his work at the Post Office, coin collecting and stamp collecting and he especially loved spending time with his seven grandchildren.
Richard is survived by his wife of 39 years, Diane; children, Dean (Melanie) Hoiland of Northwood, ND; Cami (Darin) Ullyott of Langdon, ND; Benjamin (Stacy) Hoiland of Thompson, ND; grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Heather and Laura Hoiland; Spencer, Sidney and Savannah Ullyott; mother-in-law, Lillian Landsem of Edmore; sister, Janice (Jim) Kiser of Fargo, ND; brother, Ted (Jill) Hoiland of Kansas City, MO; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Elmer Landsem and a brother, Harold in infancy.

Luella Sophia Rothgarn
Luella Sophia Rothgarn, 99, of Rugby, ND, died Friday, August 6, 2004 at Heart of America Medical Center, Rugby.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rugby, with interment in the Persilla Watts cemetery, Rugby. Officiating will be the Rev. Donald E. Andrews.
Visitation will be held today from 3-9 p.m. at the Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rugby.
Luella was born Sept. 27, 1904 in Minnewaukan Township, Ramsey County, ND, the daughter of Carl and Christina (Lee) Kjelberson. She was born on her grandfather's homestead. She spoke only Norwegian when she began her education at a nearby rural school, where later students learned to knit socks for World War I soldiers. On June 1, 1923, she graduated from Devils Lake High School, and then attended Mayville State Teacher's College, where she worked in the cafeteria for board and room. She taught at the Halle School near Devils Lake and at the Hinz, Willow Creek #1 and Norman #3 schools at Willow City.
She and Arthur Thaddeus Rothgarn met a country school box social and were married
in her parent's home in Devils Lake on Oct. 16, 1929. The couple resided west of Willow City. Mr. Rothgarn died April 24, 1981 but she continued to live on the farm until she and her daughter moved to Rugby in December 1997.
She enjoyed gardening, photography, and making aprons and quilt tops. She milked cows and even had a milk route when in high school. She wrote profiles of Willow City businessmen and poetry for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and about her students and school activities. She wrote a newspaper column called "Kabobs by Kari."
In 1938 she organized the 3-W Homemaker's Club and was its last charter member. She had been affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Church Women, Willow City Senior Citizens, a 4-H Leader, Pioneer Daughters of Towner, the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Grand Ester. She modeled her wedding dress during area centennial celebrations in the late 1980's. She played the piano by ear - any tune she heard she could play - and often entertained with her music or accompanied group singing. She collected rocks for her flower garden and treasured one foundation rock from Vernes Church at Devils Lake and a large flat one, nicknamed, Abraham, from her Grandma K's farm. She remembered planting potatoes in a Devils Lake area lake bottom and marveled at the Lake's rise in recent years. Throughout her life she carried a scar on her upper lip, the result of falling on a sharp baking powder can being used as a cookie cutter. She spoke fondly of her first mode of transportation - a buggy pulled by her horse, Nancy. She learned to drive her dad's new Chevrolet with side curtains while still in grade school. She often recalled her fianc/'s 1920's model Chrysler coupe with rumble seat and her grandmother's new 1910 Buick. She loved to go whenever or wherever the car went until May 6, when she entered Heart of America Medical Center Long Term Care Unit in Rugby, where she died on August 6, 2004.
She is survived by her daughter, Mildred Marguerite Rothgarn, Rugby;
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Adelaide Louise; and brother, Philip Carlyle.
