He moved with his family to the Riggin farm on Ramsey County Highway One, where he grew up. He attended Devils Lake High School, graduating in 1939. While in high school he was active in boxing, winning many titles. He fought Golden Gloves and, along with Miff Graham, coached the boxing team.
On June 11, 1941, he was united in marriage to June Hoven in Devils Lake. Five children were born of this marriage: Dennis (Karen) Riggin, Rory (Charlotte) Riggin, Kevin (Annie) Riggin, all of Devils Lake; Kathleen Riggin of Kelso, WA and Maureen (Dale) Regan of Fargo, ND.
Les joined the Army in 1941 and served in England and Ireland from 1942 until he was Honorably Discharged in 1945.
He returned to Devils Lake and went to work for the S&L; Department Store. During this time he purchased the family dairy farm and continued working for S&L.;
In 1953, Les began selling Pontiacs for Cliff and Mary Sandberg at the Tubby Greene Pontiac Company and thus began a 50 year career in the automotive industry. He was hired by Pete Klein to sell Oldsmobiles in 1954 and later that year, he and John Hager purchased the dealership from Mr. Klein and it became R&H; Oldsmobile. The Pontiac franchise was added in 1958. In the fall of 1960, Les purchased the business from Mr. Hager and changed the name of the dealership to Riggin Motors. He was joined in the business by his son, Dennis in 1963 and a few years later by his other two sons, Rory and Kevin. A grandson, Lanny, later joined the dealership. Les was proud that three generations have worked together in the automobile business. Riggin Motors built a new "home" in 1973, at the current Highway Two location.
In retirement, Les enjoyed spending winters in the Phoenix, AZ area with special companion Donna Schell. They lived at Sunwest Park in Devils Lake. Les spent the summers in the area playing golf with his friends, watching Rory's horses and coming to the dealership every day to read the paper and get into lively discussions, on any subject, with friends and customers. He very much enjoyed his Friday evening dinners with Donna and special friends, Tony and Cheryl Rayer.
Les was a life member of the Devils Lake Elks Lodge #1216, member of the VFW Post #756 and a 50-year member of the Devils Lake Town and Country Club. He was also a long time member of the North Dakota Automobile Dealers Association.
