Grace Lilke

Grace Shambach Lilke, 70, Fargo, ND, died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Bethany Homes, where she resided for nine years.

Grace was born June 12, 1933, in Brinsmade, ND. She attended school there and later did housework for families in the area. She moved to Fargo and lived and worked at Golden Acres Haven. When that facility closed, she moved to Valley City, ND, and was employed at Foss Drug Store.

Grace married Howard Lilke and they lived in Valley City until his death in 1987. Shortly there after, Grace returned to Fargo to be closer to her family and she lived at the downtown High Rise until health conditions brought her to Bethany.

She is survived by sisters, Norma Rose, Rolette, ND, Mary Alice (Bob) Dryden, San Diego, CA, Esther (Vernon) Gerig, Brinsmade; a brother, Gordon Shambach, Minot, ND; and fifteen nieces and nephews.

During her stay at Bethany she was very mobile with her wheelchair. She was well acquainted with the residents, visitors and staff and had a ready smile for everyone. She was one of the stars in television ads informing the public that “Bethany is a great place to live and work.” She will be missed by her family, her many friends and caregivers.

Erven Lauinger

Erven J. Lauinger, age 74, of Fargo, ND, died on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Villa Maria in Fargo

Erven John Lauinger, the son of Ben and Barbara Lauinger, was born July 22, 1929, in Strasburg, ND, where he grew up and received his education. He worked on the family farm until the Korean War. Erven served his country in the US Army and saw combat action in Korea.

On Aug. 18, 1956, Erven married Donna Olson. They lived in Fargo, St. Cloud, MN, and in Moorhead, MN. Erven worked as a sprinkler fitter for Sorenson Company. In 1984, He moved to Minneapolis, MN, and continued to work as a sprinkler fitter.

In 1989, he retired and moved back to Moorhead. In September of 2000, Erven became a resident of Villa Maria in Fargo. He is survived by a daughter, Kim (Karl) Buhaug, Moorhead; four brothers, Joe (Betsy) Lauinger, Linton, ND, Tony (Trudy) Lauinger, Minneapolis, Conrad (Rose) Lauinger, Fargo, and Baldwin (Grace) Lauinger, Bismarck, ND; four sisters, Evangeline Lauinger, Fargo, Tillie Rothlisberger, Fargo, Betty Bachmann, Fargo and Virginia (Armondo) Baur, New Jersey; and one granddaughter, Lindsey Buhaug.

Visitation: one hour before the funeral, at the church.

Funeral mass: Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 2 PM, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Moorhead, Minnesota.

Burial: Fort Snelling National cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.

Idella Larson

Idella Fern Holty was born October 4, 1920, the daughter of Andrew and Tina (Johnson) Holty, at Hettinger, ND. She received her education in Perkins County, SD, where she lived until she moved to the Shelly, MN, area in 1938. On December 27, 1939, Idella was united in marriage to Lester Larson in Ada, MN. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2000.

Over the years, Idella worked doing various jobs in Shelly and the surrounding area. She was a faithful member of the Shelly-Marsh River Lutheran Church and an active member of the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Historical Society and Steam Threshers Reunion. Idella loved music, playing piano for the senior citizens, playing cards and spending time with all her friends at the Senior Citizens Center in Moorhead, MN.

Idella died Tuesday morning, March 9, 2004, at 1:45 AM, in ManorCare Health Services, Fargo, ND, with her family at her bedside. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family and friends. The family would like to especially thank Lutheran Social Services and the staff of ManorCare for their care and concern.

Idella is survived by two daughters, Betty (Ray) Malmlov, Shelly, and Rebecca (Rodney) Spokely, rural Nielsville, MN; a son, Brian (Marlys) Larson, Fargo; a brother, Vern Holty, Fargo; eleven grandchildren, Kim (Scott) Blattner, Bambi (Phil) Hellerud, Raiko (Chris) Blattner, Deveryn (Brandie) Malmlov, Nathan (April) Malmlov, Tiffany Malmlov and special friend, Marc Rosenau, Nicole (Herman) Weiss, Missy Larson and special friend, Chad Ambers, Michon (Paul) Metzger, Jennifer (Lance) Reitmeier, and Mandi (Benjamin) Hoff; and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and eleven brothers and sisters.

Theodore "Ted" Kolegraf

Theodore “Ted” A. Kolegraf Jr., 84, West Fargo, ND, died Friday, March 19, 2004, in MeritCare Hospital, South University, Fargo, ND.

Theodore Albert Kolegraf Jr. was born February 10, 1920, near Hope, ND, to Theodore and Irene Kolegraf. Ted was raised in the Hope area where he graduated from high school. Ted graduated from NDSCS, Wahpeton, ND. While there, Ted set the ND state record for the one mile run in track and field competition. The record held for nineteen years.

Ted entered the US Army in November 1942. He served in France and England during WW II and was honorably discharged in December 1945. He returned to the Hope area where he married Marjorie L. Martin on May 26, 1949. They lived in Hope where Ted worked for the Hope Pioneer. He later purchased the Hope Pioneer and served as editor.

In 1963, the family moved to Cooperstown, ND, where Ted worked for the Griggs County Sentinel Courier. He retired from the Courier in 1985 and opened his own business, Ted’s Print Shop, in Cooperstown. He operated that business until 1989, and they moved to West Fargo in 1993.

Ted is survived by his wife, Marjorie, West Fargo; one son, Kim (Debbie) Kolegraf, Bismarck, ND; two daughters, Linda (Marvin) Elsaas, Fergus Falls, MN, and Dawn (John) Reierson, Perley, MN; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Jeremy, Deanna, Alison, Damion, Nathan and Brodie; three great-granddaughters, Courtney, Cassidy and Tessa; one brother, James Kolegraf, Sharon, PA; and three sisters, Eileen Polhamus, Seattle, WA, Corrine Croffutt, Fort Pierce, FL, and Gwen (Harry) Barth, Yakima, WA. Ted was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elva Udell; and two brothers, Richard and Sheldon Kolegraf.

Lillian Kerlin

Lillian Kerlin, age 94, of Mayville, ND, formerly of Moorhead, MN, and Dilworth, MN, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville.

Lillian Sophia Corneliussen, the daughter of John and Marie (Peterson) Corneliussen, was born on Dec. 22, 1909, at rural Rustad, MN, where she grew up and received her education. When she was 16, the family moved to Moorhead.

On September 19, 1931, Lillian was united in marriage to Leonard A. W. Kerlin, at Comstock, MN. The couple lived in Moorhead, Grand Forks, ND, and Grand Island, NE. In 1945, they moved to Dilworth, MN. Lillian worked at Blue Bird Café and the Sweden House Restaurant in Moorhead. From 1954 to 1978, she and Leonard operated a berry farm near Ada, MN. Leonard died on March 3, 1979.

After his death, Lillian continued to live in Dilworth. In the late 1980’s she moved to Moorhead, to live in Parkview Terrace. In 1995, Lillian moved to Mayville, and became a resident of Luther Memorial Home.

She is survived by a son, Donald (Rosina) Kerlin, Mayville; twelve grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Messerschmidt, who died in 1987; her parents; three brothers; and seven sisters.

Visitation: Tuesday, from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

Funeral service: Wednesday (May 5, 2004) at 2:00 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Moorhead, MN.

Stephanie Keckhafer

Stephanie A. Keckhafer, 36, Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004, in her home.

Stephanie Ann Keckhafer was born October 27, 1967, on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota. She was adopted by Mary Keckhafer at nine years of age and the two made their home in Fargo, where Stephanie grew up and graduated from Fargo South High School in 1989.

Stephanie was presented the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award in 2002 by the Metro Area Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities for her popcorn business. Stephanie packed a lot of life and activity into her young life. She and Mary traveled extensively throughout the world. Stephanie was an actively involved member of Friendship United Methodist Church, Fargo, where she was loved by all. She made a lasting impression on all who crossed her path and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Stephanie is survived by her mother, Mary, Fargo; her grandmother, Olga Keckhafer, Fergus Falls, MN; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Edwin Keckhafer and one aunt.

David Helfter

David Michael Helfter was born June 7, 1968, in Heidelberg, Germany, to Mark and Hella (Dietrich) Helfter. He grew up in Fargo, ND, and graduated from the Division of Independent Study. David then attended Interstate Business College and graduated with a degree in business administration.

David worked as a salesman and office manager for Sheyenne Appliance, West Fargo, ND. He returned to school and currently was a student at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, MN, majoring in business administration and political science. While in school, David continued his employment part-time with Sheyenne Appliance and also worked for Happy Joes, Fargo.

David enjoyed doing radio work. His personalities included Rockin Rodney, Danger Boy, and Dave’s Simple World. He had a quick wit and was very creative. He was actively involved with the Libertarian political party. David also loved spending time with his family and friends. His dogs, Betor, Lursa and Cassie, were very important to him.

David died Friday, March 12, 2004, in his home, Moorhead, at the age of 35.

He is survived by his parents, Mark and Hella, Fargo; a brother, Karl, Fargo; a sister, Loraine (Joseph) Fleeman, Hiddenite, NC; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Loraine Helfter and Fritz and Herta Dietrich; an uncle, Peter Dietrich; and cousins, Jill Stapleton and Suzanne Albicker.

Visitation: Wednesday, 5 PM to 8 PM, with a Prayer Service at 8 PM Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead

Funeral Mass: Thursday, March 18, 2004, at 12 noon St. Mary’s Cathedral, Fargo.

Interment: Holy Cross cemetery, Fargo.

John Hager

John R. Hager, 56, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, in his Moorhead home.

John “Babe” Roy Hager, son of John and Emma (Grossman) Hager, was born November 19, 1947, in Devils Lake, ND. He grew up and received his education in Minnewaukan, ND. John worked several years as a steel worker at Marvel Steel Factory, Jamestown, ND, as a logger in Montana, and then later worked at Sioux Manufacturing, Devils Lake.

John is survived by three daughters; DellaRay Patience Hager, Barbara Ann Hager, and Crystal Wilkie, all of Moorhead; one son, Jessie Cavanaugh; two brothers, Gene (Bernadine), Minnewaukan, and Don (Julie) Hager, Wichita, KS; six sisters, Carol (Dennis) McGuire, Pillsbury, ND, Elizabeth Stensby, New Rockford, ND, Helen (George) Bragg, Medford, OR, Irene Olson, San Antonio, TX, Kathryn (Raymond) Nelson, Devils Lake, and Dorothy Parrish, Devils Lake; and one grandchild. John was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Friday, May 7, 2004 – 2:00 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead, MN

INURNMENT: St. James Catholic cemetery, Minnewaukan, ND.

Richard W. Grosz

Richard William Grosz was born April 5, 1929, in New Leipzig, ND, the son of Henry and Frieda (Kurtz) Grosz. Richard grew up and attended school in New Leipzig and served in the Korean War from 1951 – 1952. When he returned, Richard attended and graduated from Dakota Business College, Fargo, ND.

On October 30, 1953, Richard was united in marriage to Rosella Lehr, in Jamestown, ND. They moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1954, and Richard worked for Nodak Mutual Insurance Company, Fargo, for thirty-six years. Richard’s love for the Lord motivated him to serve in his church. He was also a volunteer at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, for eleven years. His grandchildren were his pride and joy.

Surrounded by his loving family, Richard went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 18, 2004, at MeritCare Hospital, at seventy-four years of age.

Richard is survived by his wife, Rosella, Moorhead; two sons, Dennis Grosz and his wife, Danelle, Sartell, MN, and Mike Grosz and his wife, Michele, Fargo; one daughter, Nancy Palmer and her husband, Carl, Moorhead; eight grandchildren, one brother, Herman Grosz and his wife, Catherine, Bismarck, ND; and two sisters, Esther Haas, Elgin, ND, and Lydia Schatz and her husband, Ervin, Carson, ND.

Visitation for Richard will be Sunday, March 21, 2004, from 5 – 7 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. The funeral will be Monday, March 22, 2004, at 10:30 AM, in Calvary Baptist Church, 802 N. Broadway, Fargo. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial cemetery, Moorhead.
