Wilma G. and James Monroe Chavis of Lumberton celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on July 14, 2001, at an anniversary dinner given by their children at Ryan’s Family Steakhouse in Lumberton. Mr. and Mrs. Chavis were married
on July 11, 1936, in Dillon, S.C. They have seven children, Mary Chitwood, Alice Faye Freeman and Ernestine Bulifant, all of Lumberton; Shelby Chavis of Brownstown Township, Mich.; Sheila Pierce of Riverview, Mich.; Joe Chavis of South Rockwood, Mich.; and Bobby Chavis of North Platte, Neb. The couple also have 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl F. Shifflette Jr. of Fayetteville. She is also the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cormier and the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shifflette Sr. of Youngstown, Ohio.
The bridegroom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. James Burk of Kempner, Texas. He is also the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Herron and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burk of Hugo, Okla.
The bride wore a white gown with embroidered daisies down the train and carried a bouquet of daisies. Her shoulder length veil, edged with organza lace, consisted of a crown of sterling silver with pearls and rhinestones in the shape of daisies. She was escorted by her father.
The maid of honor was Megan Alley of Fayetteville. The bridesmaids were Sylvia Wade of Fayetteville, Joy Shifflette of Tucson, Ariz., and Audrey Davis-Shifflette of North Richland Hills, Texas.
The flower girls were Kirsten and Lindsey Allen of Georgetown, Texas. The ringbearer was Cody Boyet of Phenix City, Ala.
The best man was the groom’s brother, Ryan Burk of Kempner, Texas. The groomsmen were Sean Shifflette and Carl F. Shifflette III, both of Tucson, Ariz., Jason Shifflette of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Johnny Paul Shifflette of Fayetteville.
The wedding was directed by Carolyn Owens of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church. The wedding soloist was Evita Frazer; the Bell Ringers were Michelle Bingham and Jean- ine Carson, and the pianist was Linda Schafer.
A reception, hosted by the bride and groom, was held at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church after the ceremony.
The bride is a graduate of Mililani High School in Mililani, Hawaii.
The bridegroom is a graduate of the University of Arkansas. He is employed by Lockheed Martin as an industrial engineer in Arlington, Texas.
After a honeymoon trip to Williamsburg, Va., the couple will live in Arlington, Texas.

at 6 p.m. on July 21, 2001, in St. Pauls with Pastor Ray Faircloth officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Carol Russell of Fay-etteville and Alan Clade of Ft. Myers, Fla. She also is the granddaughter of Althea Chase of Union, Maine.
The bridegroom’s mother is Faye Thompson of St. Pauls. The bridegroom also is the grandson of Agnes Harris of St. Pauls.
The bride wore a white matte satin gown with a bodice embellished by re-embroidered lace accented with pearls. The bodice flowed into a simple princess A-line skirt. The same bead lace trimmed the chapel-length train. She carried a bouquet of white roses and was escorted by her father.
The matrons of honor were the bride’s sister, Annette Johnson of Hope Mills, and her friend, Vicki Warnock of Chester, Va. The bridesmaids were Erica Kennedy of Durham, Linda Kraushaar of Fayetteville, Alicia Thompson of St. Pauls and Vanessa DeMoss of Ft. Myers, Fla. The junior bridesmaid was Lauren Thompson of St. Pauls. The miniature bride was Alyson Thompson, and the flower girls were Charli White and Mary Margaret Thompson, all of St. Pauls.
The best man was the groom’s brother, Rodney Thompson of St. Pauls. The groomsmen were Adam Thompson of Bladenboro, Stacy Bolton of Fayetteville, Chris Bell of Raleigh and Nathan Mason and Dereck Jackson, both of St. Pauls.
The wedding was directed by Julie Autry. The wedding musicians were Tommy Cox, Ray Faircloth Jr., Shelley Faircloth and Melissa Faircloth.
A reception, hosted by the bride’s mother, was held at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville after the ceremony. A rehearsal dinner, hosted by the groom’s family, was held at Gina Restaurant in Lumberton on July 20.
The bride is a graduate of Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville. She received a bachelor of arts from Peace College and teaching certification from Meredith College. She is employed by Cumberland County Schools as an elementary school teacher.
The bridegroom is a graduate of St. Pauls High School in St. Pauls and attended East Carolina University in Greenville.
After a honeymoon cruise to the Bahamas, the couple will live in Fayetteville.

The groom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Tatum of Castle Hayne. He is the grandson of Nancy Burton of Castle Hayne.
The bride was escorted by her father. Her maid of honor was her sister, Beverly French of Hope Mills. Her bridesmaids were Beth Gore of Fay-etteville, Dana Mattocks of Raleigh, Tara Pearl of Burlington, Christie Thurstone of Chicago and Katie Whitlow of New Bern. The child attendants were Haylie Strickland of Wade and Alex Stiles of Charlotte.
The best man was the groom’s best friend, Terry Blanton of Wilmington. The groomsmen were Shawn Booth, Matt Perkins and Jeremy Stiles, all of Wilmington, Ren Leathers of Hickory and Chris Thurstone of Chicago.
The bride is a graduate of Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She will begin her career with McGladrey and Pullen in Wilmington.
The groom is completing his bachelor’s degree in communications at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He is owner of Active Entertainment in Wilmington.
After a honeymoon in St. Johns, U.S. Virgin Islands, the couple will live in Wilmington.
