Melissa Scotti Sykes and Steven Ray Marshburn, both of Fayetteville, were married
at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Fayetteville. The Rev. Chris Aydlett officiated.
The bride is the daughter of Timothy Allen and Gwen Pheagin Holtsclaw and Samuel Mason and Ruby Sykes, all of Fayetteville. She also is the granddaughter of Martha Elliott Pheagin of Gastonia, the late James T. Pheagin and the late Mr. and Mrs. Odell Sykes.
The groom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Ray Marshburn of Fayette-ville. He is the grandson of Gladys Craft of Wallace, the late Ruby Craft, Libby Marshburn of Richlands and the late Luby Marshburn.
The bride wore a formal gown of white satin from the Vera Wang Collection, featuring hand beading and pearls on the bodice and on the illusion fingertip sleeves. The beading was repeated on the 10-foot train. She carried a cascade of white roses, stephanotis,white freesia and ivy accented with silver ribbon and pearls. Her multilayered illusion veil was anchored by a jeweled tiara. She was escorted by her father, Samuel Mason Sykes, and her stepfather, Timothy Allen Holtsclaw.
Her friend, Donna Brown Parker of Fayetteville, served as matron of honor. The bridesmaids were Shannon Sykes, Wendy Shearin and Lisa Jaszcz, all of Fayetteville, Monica Willaford of Stedman, Michelle Harrelson of White Lake, Cari Hare of Garner and Tracey Ossont of Ava, N.Y.
The child attendant was Morgan Marshburn of Stedman.
The best man was the groom’s father, Ervin Ray Marshburn of Fayetteville. The groomsmen were Jamie Sykes, Chris Dixon and Brian Walker, all of Fayetteville, Brandon Taylor of Viera, Fla., Tom King of Mebane, Scott Harrelson of White Lake, and Kyle Willaford of Stedman.
The wedding was directed by Susan F. Few of Columbia, S.C. The wedding musicians were organist Ken Phillips and vocalist David Culbreth.
A reception featuring dinner and dancing was hosted by the bride’s parents and held at The Shriner’s Club after the ceremony.
Celebrations marking the Sykes-Marshburn wedding weekend included a poolside bridesmaid’s luncheon, hosted at the Holtsclaw home by the bride’s aunt, Margo DeWitt of Lake Norman, and an outdoor rehearsal dinner at King’s Grant, hosted by the groom’s parents. A wedding breakfast was held at the home of the bride’s godparents, Pat and Gene Clayton, and hosted by the Claytons, Mr. and Mrs. Chip Brantley, Dr. and Mrs. Sam Bright, Ms. Jan Cobb, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Jones, Mr. and Mrs. David Martin, Dr. and Mrs. Ronnie Milligan, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Tew and Mr. and Mrs. Stacy Whittington.
The bride is a graduate of Pine Forest High School and Methodist College where she graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in education. She is employed as a fifth-grade teacher at Sherwood Park Elementary School.
The groom is a graduate of Pine Forest High School and East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He is a the general manager of Piedmont Moving and Storage in Fayetteville.
After a honeymoon trip to Bermuda, the couple will live in Fayetteville.
