Celebrating 56 Years

Ercel Bennett Bass and Samuel Morris Bass of Fayetteville celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on August 31, 2002, with a reception at their home. Mr. and Mrs. Bass were married icon on August 31, 1946, in Charlotte. They have two children, Deborah Bass Foster of Fayetteville and Kim Bass McClanahan of Charleston, W.V.

Celebrating 50 Years

Catherine McPherson Monroe and James Thomas Monroe of Fayetteville celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 20, 2002, with a renewal of vows and buffet dinner at Hatchers Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Parkton. Mr. and Mrs. Monroe were married icon on July 20, 1952, in Dillon, S.C. They have seven children, Minnie Ford and husband Anthony of Fayetteville; Mary Gathers, Bernice Murphy, Jerry Monroe and Kenneth Monroe, all of Fayetteville; James E. Monroe and wife Irita of Greenville; and Patricia Murphy and husband Dwain of St. Pauls The couple has 25 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Arvill Mitchell Hicks

Ursula Maria Richardson of Benton, Ky., and Retired Sgt. Maj. Arvill Mitchell Hicks of Fayetteville will be married icon at 1 p.m. on November 30, 2002, at the JFK Chapel on Fort Bragg with the Rev. Richard Cash officiating.

The bride-elect is the daughter of the late Maria Johnson. The groom-elect is the son of the late Lillie Fay Myers and the late Amos Arvill Hicks.

The bride-elect received her degree in dental hygiene from Delta University Center in Michigan. She is a retired licensed cosmetologist and registered dental assistant.

The bridegroom-elect received his associate’s degree in criminal justice from Fayetteville Technical Community College. He is a correctional sergeant with the North Carolina Division of Prisons.

The couple plans to live in Fayetteville

MERRICK, N.Y. — Kimberly Deirdre Noonan of Bellmore, N.Y., and George Anagnostopoulos of Merrick, N.Y., were married icon at 3 p.m. on July 7, 2002, at St. Demetrious Greek Orthodox Church with the Rev. Dr. George Kalangis officiating. Father James Mannion of Curé of Ars Roman Catholic Church gave a special blessing.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Patrick Noonan of Clayton. The bridegroom’s parents are Mr and Mrs. Peter Anagnostopoulos of Merrick, N.Y. The bridegroom is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Demetrious Voulokos of Skoura, Greece.

The bride wore a strapless, silk organza gown which was accented with a crystal and pearl design at the waist and covered buttons which extended down the length of the train. The gown was complimented by a cathedral-length veil. She carried a bouquet of red roses.

The bride was escorted by her father. The matron of honor was the bride’s friend, Casey Nasta of Long Island. The maid of honor was the bride’s friend, Georgia Mouzakitis of Long Island. The bride’s attendants were Jennifer Bordeaux of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Leslie Chlebowski of Richmond, Va.; Kendra Nicholson of Raleigh; and Maureen Anagnostopoulos of Long Island. The honorary bridesmaid was Jeanne Smith Hampton of Boston, Mass. The flower girl was Victoria Noonan and the ring bearer was Sean Noonan.

The koumbaros was the groom’s brother, Taki Anagnostopoulos. The groomsmen were Joseph Noonan Jr. of Raleigh; Peter Strifas, Jimmy Anagnostopoulos and George Anagnostopoulos, all of Long Island; and Daniel Nasta of Merrick.

The wedding musicians were were a Greek and American band.

A reception, hosted by the bride’s parents, was held at Westbury Manor in Westbury, N.Y., after the ceremony.

The bride is a graduate of Terry Sanford High School in Fayetteville, N.C. She is completing her degree at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., and is an international flight attendant with American Airlines.

The bridegroom received his bachelor’s degree in sports management from C.W. Post Long Island University. He is a recreation specialist with Nassau County Parks.

After a honeymoon trip to Sandals in the Bahamas, the couple will reside in Merrick.

Laura Katherine Canup &
Steven Edward Hughes

CHARLOTTE — Laura Katherine Canup of Fayetteville and Steven Edward Hughes of Goldsboro were married icon at 2 p.m. on June 22, 2002, at St. Patrick Cathedral. The Rev. Christopher Gober officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ray Canup of Fayetteville. The groom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Winston Hughes of Goldsboro.

The bride was escorted by her father. The maid of honor was the bride’s sister, Lesley Michelle Canup of Wendell. The bridesmaids were Maria Theresa Ramsey of Wake Forest; Alexandria Pettway Rooker and Jessica Ann Martinez, both of Cary; Keri Hughes Reel of Goldsboro; and Sarah Suzanne Schramm of Coronado, Calif.

The best man was the groom’s brother, Jonathan Hughes of Augusta, Ga. The groomsmen were Chris Yarrow of Greensboro; Jeff Harrell of Denver, Colo.; Bruce Thomas Vestal and Jamie M. Swisher, both of Charlotte; and Travis Matthew Canup of Raleigh.

The bride is a graduate of Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville. She received a bachelor’s degree in textile material science and a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in textile engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. She is a research engineer for the New Ventures Team of Milliken & Co. in Spartanburg, S.C.

The groom is a graduate of Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro. He received his bachelor’s degree in English, with a concentration in education, from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He is a corporate investment analyst with Wachovia Corp. in Charlotte.

After a honeymoon trip to Greece, the couple settled in Belmont.
