at 12 p.m. on April 27, 2002, at Sarah P. Duke Gardens with the Rev. Frank T. White officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Evelina Cohen of Fayetteville. She is the granddaughter of Margaret M. Boyd and the late Willie J. Boyd of Hopkinsville, Ky. She is the goddaughter of Veronica Harris of Fayetteville.
The bridegroom’s parents are Mak Tong Holt and Kenneth Holt, both of Fayetteville. The bridegroom is also the stepson of Yong Ok Holt of Fayetteville. He is the grandson of Henrietta Barr of Goldsboro and the godson of Delores Smith of Fayetteville.
The bride wore a silk charmeuse gown with diamond accents and carried a bouquet of dendrobium orchids. Her shawl was embroidered in Swarovski crystal with the Adinkra Sankofa symbol. The symbol reflects the belief that the past serves as a guide for the future.
She was escorted by her brother, Michael Cohen Jr. of Fayetteville. The maid of honor was the bride’s sister, Tameka Anthony of Greensboro. The bridesmaids were Jessica Flythe of San Francisco, Calif.; Sharon Holt of North Brunswick, N.J.; Valeda Johnson of Piscataway, N.J.; Shonda Kelly of Bowie, Md.; Michella Troy of Columbia, S.C.; and Sharon Hayden of Spotsylvania, Va. The bridesmaids each carried the Afri can Akuaba doll, representing fertility and feminine power, each was accented with dendrobium orchids. The flower girl was Mickella Reynolds of Montgomery Village, Md. The ring bearer was the bride’s brother, Brian Cohen of Fayetteville.
The groom wore a Perry Ellis tuxedo with a platinum tie and vest. He also wore the Sankofa symbol as a pendant on his dendrobium orchid boutonniere.
The best man was the groom’s brother, Kenneth Holt Jr. of Fayetteville. The groomsmen were Atiba Bethea of Winston-Salem; Will Bethea of Dallas, Texas; Devi Dixon of Raleigh; Jermaine McKinley of Austin, Texas; and Larry Rivera of Fayetteville. They wore boutonnieres of dendrobium orchids accented with a silver Tuareg Cross of Agadez. The cross is traditionally given from father to son in Africa as a symbol of the four corners of the earth. It further represents that God is the center of the universe and we are one with Him.
The wedding was directed by Elizabeth Holmes. Wesley Williams and Company provided the African dance performance and wedding choreography. The wedding musicians were Bradley Simmons and Leon Dunkley’s Jazz Band.
The rehearsal dinner, hosted by the groom’s sister, Sharon Holt, as a wedding present, was April 26, 2002, at Golden Corral in Durham. Appreciation gifts were presented to the bridal party and family at that time.
A reception was held at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham. It was outdoors under a tent decorated with asian lanterns, bamboo and dendrobium orchids.
The bride is a graduate of E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville. She received her bachelor’s degree in sociology from Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Va., and her master’s degree in criminal justice from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. She is employed by the Institute for Law and Justice in Alexandria, Va.
The bridegroom is a graduate of Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He is employed as a systems consultant by Syscom in Baltimore, Md.
After a honeymoon cruise to Cozumel, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, the couple settled in Laurel, Md.
The bride and groom would like to extend sincere thanks to God for blessing them with loving family, friends and spectacular weather.

The groom is the son of Judy Owen of Elizabethtown and Richard Faircloth Sr. of Fayetteville. He is the stepson of Stacy Owen of Elizabethtown.
The bride was escorted by her mother and father. The maids of honor were the bride’s sisters, Carrie Inman and Megan Inman, both of Tar Heel. The bridesmaids were Carla Allen of Florence, S.C.; Michelle Nance of Dublin; and Sandra Sessoms of Bladenboro. The flower girl was Hayley Faircloth of Lumberton.
The best man was the groom’s stepfather. The groomsmen were Kenny Coble of Raleigh; Taylor Barden of Charlotte; and Ricky Faircloth and Thomas Faircloth, both of White Oak.
The bride received her bachelor’s degree in zoology from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The groom received his bachelor’s degree in social work from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. He is a lineman for Four County EMC in Elizabethtown.
After a honeymoon trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn., the couple plans to live in Chapel Hill.

The groom is a graduate of Haywood Community College. He spent four years with the Alpha Company 4th ADA/3rd BN stationed at Fort Bragg. He is now an equipment engineering technician with Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas.
