Georgia F.S. Lasley
REIDSVILLE -- George Florence Saunders Lasley, 83, of 859 Sandy Cross Rd., died Wednesday at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday at First Congregational Christian Church and burial will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens.
A native of Reidsville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph William and Della Carroll Saunders and had lived in the Sandy Cross Community of Rockingham Co. for over 50 years. She was retired from the American Tobacco Co., a member of First Congregational Christian Church, a member and past Worthy Matron of the Reidsville Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, William Troy Lasley, and by her son, Joseph William “Bill” Lasley II.
Surviving: daughter, JoAnne L. Alston and her husband, William E. Alston, of Henderson, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Jeannie C. Lasley of Reidsville; brother, William Edward Saunders of New Bern, N.C.; grandchildren, William Robert Alston and Laura Ann Lasley; one great-granddaughter, Emily Carroll Alston.
The family will see friends at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Jeanie C. Lasley, 859 Sandy Cross Rd., Reidsville, N.C.

Lula F. Riggan
BULLOCK -- Lula Faucette Riggan, 87, of 8717 Hwy. 15-N, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late John W. and Nellie Newby Faucette.
She was a lifetime member of Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Marrow’s Chapel United Methodist Church by the Revs. John Crabtree and C. Neil Woodlief. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Nancy R. Howard and Becky R. Dickerson, both of Oxford; two sisters, Coreen Tingen of Bullock and Nannie Leigh Owen of Oxford; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home in Bullock.

Evangelist Hazel Sanders-Perry
HENDERSON -- Evangelist Hazel Sanders-Perry, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Raleigh.
She was the owner and operator of Sanders Family Care.

WARRENTON -- Georgianna Tyre, 108, of Warrenton, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.

Robert B. Miller
OXFORD -- Robert B. Miller, 75, of Oxford died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and an employee of Wal-Mart.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church of Henderson.
Surviving are his wife, Janis Miller; two sons, Richard Wheeler of Coral Springs, Fla., and Douglas Wheeler of Cary; three daughters, Deborah Wheeler of Richmond, Va., Roberta Stedelin of Tucson, Ariz., and Kelly Holden of Oxford; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

James E. Montague
WARRENTON -- James Ervin “Long-Boy” Montague, 61, of Palmer Springs, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Wise by the Rev. Preston Williams, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Connie Hendricks of Wise, Charlene M. Thompson of Palmer Springs and Kim Hubbard of Raleigh; two sons, James E. Montague Jr. of Minneapolis and Alphonso Jiggetts of Palmer Springs, Va.; nine grandchildren; four sisters, Shirley Greene of Wise, Rosetta Palmer of the Bronx, N.Y., Phyllis Wright of Richmond, Va., and Carol Francine Montague of Warrenton; and three brothers, Bill Montague of the Bronx, Theodore Montague of Wise and Harold Montague of Henderson.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

Robert C. Kelley
HENDERSON -- Robert Cornelius Kelley, 63, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Warren Hill Nursing Center. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Cornelius and Annie Thorpe Kelley.
He joined Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church at an early age and was educated in the Vance County public schools.
He was a farmer until his health declined.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Sunday at the chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service by the Rev. William C. Brodie. Burial will follow in the Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving are one son, William O’Neal Wilson; two brothers, Edward Kelley of Delaware and Raymond Kelley of Henderson; three sisters, Helen K. Glover Royster, Arlene Kelley Melchor and Lillie K. Peace, all of Henderson; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Helen Royster, 424 Thomas St.

Charles N. Roberson Jr.
HENDERSON -- Charles Newcomb Roberson Jr., 35, a resident of 5089 Warrenton Road, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his home. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Reba “Diane” Brame Barton and Charles Newcomb Roberson Sr. of Henderson.
He was a former parts manager for Boyd Oldsmobile in Oxford and was a member of the Flat Rock United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Pamela “Pam” Pendergrass Roberson; one daughter, Jessica Roberson of the home; one son, Justin Roberson of the home; and one half-brother, Neil Barton of Henderson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Bobby and Helen Pendergrass at 5135 Warrenton Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Derrill Reaves, David King III, Cameron King, Jason King, Daniel Jackson, Steve Adcock, Randy Garrett and Tony Sanford.

Hazel Sander-Perry
HENDERSON -- Evangelist Hazel Sander-Perry, 72, of 405 Breckenridge St. died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Raleigh after a period of declining health. She was a native of Winston-Salem and the daughter of Mattie McKensie Sanders and the late Grady Gaston.
She attended the Wake County public schools and worked in the early 1960s for Hamilton Funeral Home. Later, she was the owner and operator of Sanders Interior Decorator Shop in Benson. In 1976, she opened Sanders Foster Care, caring for children of all ages. In 1984, Sanders Foster Care became the home of Sanders Family Care, where she was owner and operator until her death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Holy Temple Church by Elder Roosevelt Alston. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Jesse James Perry; her mother, Mattie M. Sanders of Raleigh; one son, John R. Sanders of Salem; five daughters, Bettye Sanders of Raleigh, Brenda Pedersen of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Deborah Williams of Henderson, and Jessica Perry and Ashley Newell, both of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, Carl Wright of Clayton and Abraham Wright of Washington, D.C.; 10 foster children; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Johnston Baptist Church in Benson and other times at the residence, 405 Breckenridge St., Henderson.
The body will lie in state one hour before the service at the church Sunday.

Robert L. Stokes
HENDERSON -- Robert Lee “Bob” Stokes, 84, of 337 Willowood Drive, Henderson, N.C., died Friday, January 25, 2002, in a local nursing home.
Born in Burlington, N.C., he was the son of the late William Thomas and Hattie Turrentine Stokes.
Mr. Stokes was the retired owner of the former City Dry Cleaners and City Speed Wash. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon, Elder and Sunday School Teacher.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 1 p.m., at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Brand. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-nine years, Rachel Staley Stokes; a daughter, Tempe S. Riddle, and husband Tommy, of Henderson; and two grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Riddle and Thomas Lee Riddle. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Lou S. Loy. and two brothers, William T. Stokes III and Dr. Durwood Stokes.
The family will receive friends at the home of Tommy and Tempe Riddle, 1826 Bane Avenue, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Paul Ross, Woody Davis, Michael McKoon, Al Tippett, Stephen Henley, Ralph Ellington, Jeff Jenkins, Bill Tippett, Herman Davis and Cliff Tippett.

Rena G. Wilkerson
HENDERSON -- Rena George Wilkerson, 88, formerly of 220 Kittrell St., Henderson, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in a local nursing home. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Joseph and Zelphy Lamb George. She was the widow of Hartwell Simmons Wilkerson.
She was retired after 44 years with Harriet & Henderson Yarns. She attended North Henderson Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Dallas George. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Ferebee W. Preddy of Franklinton; two sons, Bobby E. Wilkerson and Thomas O. Wilkerson, both of Henderson; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jackie R. Wilkerson.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Ranger and Sandra Wilkerson, 835 Eastside Drive, Henderson.
Her grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Linda H. Aleshire
HENDERSON -- Linda Louise Hunt Aleshire, 43, of 147 Lee Lane died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at her home after a brief illness. She was a native of Vance County and was the daughter of the Rev. Dorothy Logio Hunt of Henderson and the late Andrew Lee Hunt.
She was a production coordinator for Novozymes, where she had worked for 15 years.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Carl Lee “Dusty” Aleshire; two sons, Dustin Lee Aleshire and Jason Stewart Vaughan, both of the home; one sister, Dorothy Ann Ball of Apachie Junction, Ariz.; and one brother, Thomas Lee Hunt of Melrose, Fla.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by Bishop Larry Downing. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
The family received friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Larry Lococo, William Claiborn, Jerry Hanford, Mike Kromer, Clarence Phelps and Randell Williams.

Edenton Boyd
WARRENTON -- Edenton “Groanie” Boyd, 60, of Newport News, Va., formerly of the Hecks Grove community in Warrenton, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Sentara Hampton General Hospital in Hampton, Va.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Coley Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton by Elder Clarence J. Dale. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Robin King of Newport News; two sons, Don Richardson and Kelvin Richardson, both of Newport News; six grandchildren; five sisters, Louise Fields and Cora Johnson, both of Warrenton, Clementine Dale of Henderson, Bessie Solomon of Newport News and Margaret Davis of East Orange, N.J.; and one brother, Robert “Bro” Boyd of Newport News.
The body was on view Monday at Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton and will remain there until being taken to the church one hour before the services.

Dorothy Mae Faulkner
NORLINA -- Dorothy Mae Faulkner, 65, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Lawrence J. Faulkner and Myrtice Harris Faulkner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview cemetery by the Rev. Doug Cutts.
Surviving is one brother, Charles “Pee Wee” Faulkner of Norlina.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home.

John T. Harris Jr.
PHILADELPHIA -- John Thomas Harris Jr., 83, of Philadelphia, formerly a North Carolina resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, in Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late John T. Harris Sr. and Ellen Christmas Harris.
The native of Chicago lived in North Carolina as a youngster but spent most of his childhood in Pennsylvania.
He played football and basketball and ran track while earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts and math at Cheyney University. He pursued graduate studies at New York University and Temple University.
He taught in the Philadelphia public schools and later served as a supervisor of school facilities. He retired in 1982.
He was an avid golfer and was a member of DelVal Golf Club, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and Club XV.
His survivors include his wife of 37 years, Annie Belle Brame Harris; a son, John T. Harris III of Philadelphia; three sisters, Mary Lou Sullivan of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Calhoun of Olney, Md., and Ellen Henry Hymans of Philadelphia; and two granddaughters.
The funeral was held Jan. 3 at St. Thomas African Episcopal Church with the Rev. Emmanuel Chemengich officiating.
Floral bearers were family members and friends. Honorary pallbearers were current and former members of Club XV and DelVal Golf Club. Active pallbearers were Goodrich Brame, Justin Brown, Anthony Calhoun, Philip Calhoun, Donald Coleman, Ashley Hymans, Larry Lane, Allen Prattis, Walter Sullivan, Damon Washington, Brennan West and Mikal Williams.
Interment was in Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester, Pa.
Terry Funeral Home of Philadelphia handled the arrangements.
Daisy E. Moody
CLARKSVILLE, Va. -- Daisy Elliott Moody, 82, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. She was the widow of Charlie Frazier Moody.
She was a homemaker and member of Rock Spring Baptist Church in Townsville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Rock Spring Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four sons, James, Charles and Sidney Moody, all of Henderson, and John Moody of Clarksville, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home and all other times at the residence of each son.
Contributions may be made to the Lions Club of Townsville or Rock Spring Baptist Church of Townsville.

Zelma G. Sherman
OXFORD -- Zelma Gooch Sherman, 91, of 200 Coventry Drive died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Rev. Elmo and Hattie Greene Gooch. She was the widow of Herman T. Sherman.
She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Keith Williams. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Thomas Sherman of Rougemont; one stepdaughter, Lucinda S. Parker of Asheboro; one stepson, Elbert Sherman of Rougemont; one half-brother, Elmo Gooch Jr. of Oxford; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Gertrude ‘Trudy’ W. Tucker
DURHAM -- Gertrude “Trudy” Williams Tucker, age 60, a resident of 4920 Pine Cone Drive, passed away Saturday evening at Durham Regional Hospital. Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Hendricks and Gertrude Hicks Williams.
Trudy was a loving daughter and mother. A loyal friend, she was loved by all who knew her, and she touched the hearts of all she met. She enjoyed gardening with her pets by her side. Trudy spent a portion of her life in Anderson, South Carolina, before moving to Durham. Most recently, she was the Chief Administrative Financial Manager for IHS at Treyburn. She was raised in the Nutbush Presbyterian Church in Townsville, North Carolina, and was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Anderson, South Carolina.
She is survived by two daughters, Terry T. Brown, and husband Windell, of Iron Station and Julia O’Brien Tucker of Durham; two sons, John Martin Tucker Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia, and Michael Hendricks Tucker of Durham; four grandchildren, Al Brown and wife Malissa, and Caroline, Jake and Joshua Tucker; one great-grandchild, Hunter Brown; many family members; and friends who became family
