Robert Daniel Lyons
Robert Daniel “Bobby” Lyons, 77, of Clemmons died February 8 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 22, 1928, in Forsyth County to James Hoyt Lyons and Mary Celeste Bost Lyons. He was a member of Calvary Moravian Church. He was co-owner and operator of Orthopedic Services where he spent more than 30 years. He played professional baseball for approximately nine years and was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Jean Davis Lyons.
Surviving are two daughters, Kim Robertson of Advance and Amy Crutchfield and husband Jay of Charlotte; two sons, Gary Lyons and wife Reba of Clemmons and Greg Lyons of Clemmons; six grandchildren, Katie and Amanda Robertson, Patrik and Nicholas Lyons and Cameron and Kate Crutchfield; one brother, Edward Hoyt “Eddie” Lyons of Winston-Salem; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of many friends.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Moravian Church with the Right Rev. Lane Sapp officiating. Burial followed at Salem Moravian Graveyard.

Elsie Foster Nail
Elsie Foster Nail, 91, died February 6 at Autumn Care of Mocksville. She was born March 1, 1914, to the late Daniel and Mary Peacock Foster. She was a lifelong member of Concord United Methodist Church in Mocksville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Nail, in 1996; four brothers, Hubert, Boone, Dewey and Henry Foster, all of Mocksville; and a sister, Ella Swicegood, also of Mocksville.
Surviving are two daughters, Patsy (Pat) Patterson and husband Jim of Advance and Joyce Wilson of Clemmons; a son, James S. Nail and wife Renee of Mocksville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Tutterow; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at Concord United Methodist Church with Dr. Mark Evans officiating. A graveside service was held at the church cemetery.

Robert Lee Britt
Pastor Robert Lee Britt of Supply died February 6 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Martin Britt of the home; a son, Robert Lee Britt Jr. of Lumberton; three daughters, Catherine Giambelluca of Clemmons and Brenda Strickland and Joy Edwards, both of Dublin; four brothers, Nash Dennis Britt and J.D. Jarry, both of Lumberton, Anthony Jarry of Phoenix City, Ala., and J.C. Britt of South Carolina; two sisters, Terry Jarry of Lumberton and Brenda Hunt of Maxton; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Floyd Memorial Chapel with Rev. Tony Stevens, Pastor Leroy Martin and Pastor Norman Gunther officiating. Burial followed at Grimes Cemetery in Dublin.

Mildred Marie Flynn
Mildred Marie Flynn, 89, died February 9 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Born on February 11, 1906, in Burlington, Wis., to Peter and Elizabeth Devaney Meyer, she was the seventh of eight sisters. As a child, she moved to St. Paul, Minn., and attended schools there. She spent her working years as a switchboard operator for Merchants Motor Freight and a receptionist for the Robert Short Cos. in St. Paul. In 1962, she married George Augustus Flynn and moved to Rush City, Minn., where she greatly enjoyed being part of small-town life and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church community. In 1982, they moved back to St. Paul, where he died in 1995. In 2003, she moved to Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her sisters; and her stepdaughter, Patricia Flynn Hasslen.
Surviving are her stepdaughter, Mary Jo Flynn Peterson and husband Charles of Lewisville; grandchildren, Daniel Flynn Peterson and wife Lynn of Lewisville, Thomas Flynn Peterson of Boone, Patrick Flynn Peterson and wife Erin of Charleston, S.C., and Molly Flynn Peterson of Lewisville; a great-granddaughter, Janie Flynn Peterson of Lewisville; two nephews she helped care for as children, Michael Burns of Burlingame, Kan., and Robert Burns and wife Amy of Cuba City, Wis.; her niece, Marcie Connor and husband Jim of New Brighton, Minn.; nephew, Richard Coe of Auburn, Wash.; her cousin, Helen Orazem of Des Moines, Iowa; and her loyal friends at Heritage Woods in Winston-Salem.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church.

Michael Wayne McClure
Michael Wayne McClure, 59, of Lewisville, formerly of Waynesville, died February 9, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Haywood County to the late James Dewey and Calcie Threlkeld McClure. He was a founding member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife, Eileen Pfaff McClure; a son, Michael McClure Jr. and wife Anna Jayson of Advance; a daughter, Jennifer McClure of Winston-Salem; a brother, Donald McClure and wife Darlene of Spartanburg, S.C.; a brother-in-law, Ben Pfaff and wife Debbie; two sisters-in-law, Susan Pfaff and Kathy Bowman and husband Jim; six grandchildren Caitlin, Jamie, Olivia, Ashlyn, Derrald and Derek; and five nieces and nephews, Greg, Brandon, Rebecca, Brett and Jesse.
A memorial service was held at Shallowford Presbyterian Church with Dr. Erich Thompson officiating.

Roy Wilson Peters Jr.
Roy Wilson Peters Jr., 77, of Pfafftown died February 11 at Salemtowne Moravian Health Care Center after several years of declining health. He was born in Winston-Salem on April 10, 1928, to Roy Wilson Peters and Ruth Hase Peters. He retired in 1990 after 43 years of service as a field engineer for Western Electric, AT&T, now Lucent Technologies. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve for a number of years and served on active duty in the U.S. Navy between 1950 and 1952. He served on submarine duty and aboard the USS Robert L. Wilson. In his youth he was active in sea scouting and remained fond of sailing as a member of the High Rock Lake Yacht Club for a number of years. He was also active in the Sons of the Confederacy until his health declined. He was a longtime member of Bethania Moravian Church.
Surviving are two sons, Mark Wilson Peters of Charlotte and Geoffrey Gordon Peters of Federal Way, Wash.; a sister, Carolyn Peters Spencer of Winston-Salem; three nieces, Lisa Dull and husband William of Winston-Salem, Claire Cann and husband Glen of Suffolk, Va., and Karen Cory and husband Lee of Charlotte; and nine grandnephews and grandnieces.
A memorial service was held at Bethania Moravian Church.

Mary Mildred Vernon West
Mary Mildred Vernon West, 91, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly February 9 at her home. She was the widow of William Howard West Sr. who preceded her in death in 1983. She was born in Carroll County, Va., on December 26, 1914, the daughter of the late Freil and Sibbie Vernon.
Surviving are four children, Charles A. West and wife Doris of Winston-Salem, Phyllis Drane and wife Henry of Clemmons, Barbara Wooten and husband Eddie of Winston-Salem and William H. West Jr. and wife Carol of Winston-Salem; 12 grandchildren, DeAnne Manning and husband Lee of Kernersville, Chuck West and wife Millicent of Winston-Salem, Sharon Guyer and husband Mitch of Belews Creek, Tami Ellis and husband Jerry of East Bend, Mark Drane and wife Shannon of Hendersonville, Teresa Owen and husband Scott of King, Lisa Wooten of Winston-Salem, Angie Wooten of Winston-Salem, Lee Wooten and wife Valerie of Winston-Salem, William H. “Blu” West III and wife Keisha of Kernersville, William H. “Bret” West IV and wife Tonya of Kernersville and Dena Casper; 20 great-grandchildren, Forrest Manning, Jessica and Madelyn West, Brooke, Alex and Faith Guyer, Courtney Ellis, Chris and Nick Owen, Zachary, Taylor and Trey Wooten, Tyler, Taylor and Zander West, Quetin, Trenton and Alexis West and Keylee and Kyndall Casper; and a sister, Irene Heineman, of Columbus, Ohio.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with Slade Blend and Ian Simpson officiating. Burial followed in Crestview Memorial Park.

William Alexander Scott Sr.
William Alexander Scott Sr., 64, of Clemmons died February 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 15, 1941, in Davidson County to the late Clyde William and Nina Tesh Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Nancy Hoots Scott.
Surviving are a son, William Scott Jr. and wife Dawn of Clemmons; two granddaughters, Brittany and Cassie Scott; and many special relatives and close friends.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with Rev. Stacy Abernathy officiating.

Clara Estella Mae Merritt Vanhoy
Clara Estella Mae Merritt Vanhoy, 96, of Galax, Va. died February 11 at Beverly-Blue Ridge Nursing Home. She was born July 3, 1909, to John Simon Merritt and Clara Estella Mae Pendry Merritt.
Surviving are her daughter, Barbara Welch Merriman and husband Robert of Galax; three sisters, Mary Merritt Anderson, Allie Merritt Lawing and husband Alvin and Ruby Merritt Scism and husband Frank, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Simon Merritt of Clemmons and John Merritt of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Marshall Merriman Jr. and wife Sarah of Richmond, Va., and James Welch Merriman and wife Allison of Charlotte; two great-grandaughters; and stepchildren Joseph Vanhoy and wife Nancy, Wesley Vanhoy and wife Loretta and John Vanhoy and wife Vickey, all of Walkertown, Sally Vanhoy and husband Howard of Clemmons, and Brenda Gudger and husband Ken of Mooresville.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Matthew W. Allen officiating. Burial followed at Crestview Memorial Park.

Edward Leo Jessup
Edward Leo Jessup, 81, of Pilot Mountain died February 11 at his home. He was born June 20, 1924, in Surry County to Roy Lee Jessup and Exie Cain Jessup. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a retired farmer and a member of Community Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John L. Jessup; and an infant brother, Roy Jessup.
Surviving are his wife, Ruby Lynch Jessup of the home; his daughter, Linda Jessup Smith and husband Al of Clemmons; his sisters, Lumie Moss and husband Ray of Westfield and Betty Jessup Land and husband Jack of Reidsville; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Jessup of Pilot Mountian.
Funeral services were held at Howell-Nelson Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain with Rev. Jack Land, Rev. Kenneth Jessup and Rev. Kevin Harris officiating. Burial followed at Brims Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Pilot Mountain VFW Post 9436.

Alice Myrtle Wall Caudle
Alice Myrtle Wall Caudle, 90, of Elkin died February 9 at the Wesley Long Nursing Center in Greensboro. She was born August 14, 1915, in Surry County to Lucinda Draughn Wall and W.H.H. “Dickie” Wall. Her life was devoted to her family. She was creative and artistic with her sewing and gardening, and loved cooking and reading and collecting recipes. She was an avid reader of the newspaper and loved to have political discussions with her immediate family members. All her life she quoted poetry from memory and continued to use French phrases learned in high school. She loved learning and encouraged her family in their educational endeavors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie O. Caudle; her son, Dickie D. Caudle; sisters, Dellar Holbrook, Hester Laffoon and Virgie Morrison; and brothers Monroe Wall, Gaither Wall, Rufus Wall and Harding Wall.
Surviving are three daughters, Rita Toivonen and husband Dennis and Kay Mansfield and husband Ray of Winston-Salem; Sybrilla Caudle of Greensboro; daughter-in-law Geraldine Caudle of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Connie Yokeley and husband Bobby of Wallburg; Karla Kinney and husband Richard of Lewisville; John Toivonen of Atlanta; and Tanya Morrisett and husband Greg of Lexington, Mass.; five great-grandchildren, Rheannon Chalfa and husband Stephen, Kellen Yokeley, Garrison Kinney, Amy Morrisett and John Morrisett; sisters Edna Mounce and Elsie Boyd and husband Alton; and sister-in-law Nell Mounce Wall.
Funeral services were held at Friendship Baptist Church Route in Elkin with Rev. Wesley Smith and Rev. Jonah Parker officiating. Burial followed in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Lillie McDaniel
Mary Lillie McDaniel, 90, of Mocksville died February 11 at Autumn Care of Mocksville. She was born December 14, 1915, in Davie County, daughter of the late George W. McClamrock and the late Mary Eanes McClamrock. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. She retired from the Davie County school system in 1985. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Oliver (Bill) McDaniel, on April 3, 1991; 10 brothers and sisters; and a son-in-law, Gilbert Holder.
Surviving are son George D. McDaniel and wife Susan of Clemmons; daughter Mary W. Holder of Advance; two grandchildren, Angela Mork and husband Phil of Charlotte and Scott McDaniel and wife Dianne of Lexington; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Welch Funeral Home with Rev. Nick Scandale and Rev. Donald Funderburk officiating. Burial followed at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Mocksville.

Harrie Story Manner
Harrie Story Manner, 49, of Mocksville died February 10 at her home. She was born November 4, 1956, in Forsyth County to Harry Albert and Geneva Lacy Story. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Surviving are a son, Joshua Creason and wife Courtney of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Jesseca Willard of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Gavin and Jocelynn; her mother of Clemmons; three sisters, Deborah Montagnet of Clemmons, Irond Miller of New Bern and Lynn Brammer of Clemmons; nieces and nephews Alexander Montagnet, Chase Montagnet, Baxter Miller, Michael Brammer and Jennifer Brammer; and a close friend, Jason Cetta.
A memorial service was held in the Angell Room at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Donald Mann officiating.

Vance Eugene Hicks Jr.
Vance Eugene Hicks Jr., 57, of Lewisville died March 6 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born September 29, 1948, in Forsyth County to Vance Eugene Hicks Sr. and Runell Cain Hicks. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, was Reserve Deputy with the Forsyth County Sheriff Department and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a daughter; Rachelle E. Parks and husband Drew of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Haley and Cana; a grandson, Sam; a stepson, Scott Jordan; a brother, Ronald Gray Hicks and wife Anne-Marie of Lewisville; and a niece, Amanda Hicks.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Paul Sink officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery.

Nues Bray Miller
Nues Bray Miller, 82, of Dobson died March 7 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She was born in Surry County on July 2, 1923, to Henry and Lela Whitaker Bray. She retired from Tultex and was a member of Rocky Ford Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Versie Smith.
Surviving are her husband, Theron Odell Miller of the home; three sons, Terry Miller and wife Gail of Dobson, Alex Miller and wife Connie of Lewisville and Kenneth Miller and wife Diane of Independence, Va.; five grandchildren, Gary F. Miller, Teresa Miller Perry and husband John, Andrea Miller, Stephanie McDuffee and husband Daniel and Sheena Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Tiffany D. Miller, Seth C. Perry and Patrick McDuffee.
Funeral services were held at Rocky Ford Baptist Church with Rev. Claude Lloyd officiating.

William Roy Cockerham Jr.
William Roy Cockerham Jr., 74. of Morehead City, husband of Nancy Nichols Cockerham, died March 5 at Carteret General Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was born in Carroll County, Va., on May 22, 1931, the son of William Roy Cockerham Sr. and Della Surratt Cockerham. A veteran of the Korean War, he served with the Eighth Army Chemical Corps in Korea as a sergeant in charge of physical education. He began his career as the head of the Physical Education Department at Atlantic High School in Carteret County, where he coached baseball, basketball, and track. He continued to pursue his love of athletics by accepting the Physical Director position for the YMCA in both Elkin and Durham. He also served as the manager of the Sea Level Inn in Sea Level. After working in management at Stroh Brewery in Winston-Salem, he settled in Morehead City, where he served as property manager for Carteret Properties until his retirement. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Jean Cockerham; and two brothers, Nelson Cockerham and Dennis Cockerham.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Nancy Nichols Cockerham of the home; his three children, Kim Cockerham and wife Robin of Asheboro, Rhon Cockerham of Kernersville and Carol Thornton and husband Wes of Goldsboro; his five grandchildren, Ryan Cockerham of Wilmington, Alyson Cockerham of Asheboro, Chase Cockerham of Kernersville, Sydney Thornton of Goldsboro and Braden Thornton of Goldsboro; two sisters, June Inman and husband Richard of Clemmons and Ms. Dwayne Badgett of Winston-Salem; five brothers, Donald Cockerham and wife Edith of Beulah, Roger Dale Cockerham and wife Laura of Beulah, Paul Cockerham and wife Judy of King, Delmer Cockerham and wife Patsy of Rural Hall and Darrell Cockerham and wife Sandy of Ararat, Va.; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy, with Rev. Howard Pittman and Rev. Grover Holder officiating. Burial followed in Oakdale Cemetery in Mount Airy.

Thomas Frederick Kinney III
Thomas Frederick Kinney III, 74, of Pfafftown and Marathon, Fla., died March 8 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was born in Forsyth County on May 29, 1931, to Thomas Frederick Kinney Jr. and Mabel Reich Kinney. He served his country honorably in Korea as a member of the U.S. Army, earning the rank of sergeant. He owned and operated 67 Motors on Reynolda Road for 45 years, starting from nothing to create a successful business. He was committed to helping people find affordable parts to repair their vehicles. His later years were brightened by the many friendships he made in Marathon. He entrusted the management of 67 Motors and his many rental properties to Greg White, his business manager. His greatest enjoyment in life was the company of his many friends. He was an avid NASCAR fan and sport fisherman with a lifelong passion for Corvettes, many of which he rebuilt. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Lois Key Kinney; his daughter, Tammy Kinney Black and husband Ron of Winston-Salem; and two grandchildren, Victoria Black and Thomas Black.
Funeral services were held at Vogler’s Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Jonathan Freeman officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Dr. Ophus Martin Fulcher
Dr. Ophus Martin Fulcher, 84, husband of Mrs. Nell Burch Fulcher of Dobson, died March 4 at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center of Elkin after an extended illness. He was born in Rockingham County on June 25, 1921, to Thomas Hughs and Nancy Joyce Fulcher and was a member of the First Methodist Church of Eden. He practiced veterinary medicine in Sparta for 10 years and worked as a veterinarian for the federal government, retiring in 1983. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served during World War II as a cryptographer technician stationed in India for four years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Osbourne and Florence Crews; and two brothers Lester Fulcher and T. H. Fulcher.
Surviving are his wife, Nell Burch Fulcher of Dobson; a daughter, Joyce F. Barbare of Overland Park, Kan.; two sons, Paul B. Fulcher and wife Susan of Clemmons and Martin E. Fulcher and wife Tracie of Mount Airy; three granddaughters, Amber Fulcher of Winston-Salem, Holly Barbare of Manhattan, Kan., and Heather Barbare of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandsons, Joshua Fulcher of Elkin and Mitchell Fulcher of Mount Airy; and two sisters, Margaret Ward of New Bern and Kathleen Rodgers of Albuquerque, N.M.
A memorial service was held in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home of Dobson with Chaplain Todd Byrd officiating. military honors will be provided by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436.

Edna Ham Carpenter
Edna Ham Carpenter, 89, of Pfafftown died March 8 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Ashe County on July 11, 1916. She was the daughter of the late William Riley and Hattie Greer Ham and the widow of Hannie Vinton Carpenter. She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robert Warren Carpenter; and a brother, Dale Ham.
Surviving are two sons, Donald Wayne Carpenter and wife Helen of Dover, Pa., and Roger Carpenter and wife Virginia of Bel Air, Md.; three daughters, Nellie Carpenter of the home, Mary Tucker and husband Marvin of East Bend and Willa Mae Wood and husband Jesse of Tobaccoville; three half brothers, Charles Ham of Valdese, Fred Ham of California and Darrell Ham of West Jefferson; two half sisters, Volorie Good and Aliene Edwards of West Jefferson; six grandchildren, Jessie Wood Jr., Steven Ray Tucker, Donald Wayne Carpenter, Karin Elizabeth Scott, Thomas Scott Carpenter and Terri Lynn Brinker; six great-grandchildren, Kyrstal Ray Butler, Shaun Curtis Hopkins, Melanie Rose Carpenter, Mackenzie Ray Tucker, Steven Austin Tucker and Aubrey Nizole Scott; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson with Rev. Larry Shepherd officiating. Burial followed in Fairview-Carpenter Cemetery in Lansing.

Patricia Cline Moore Kirk
Patricia Cline Moore Kirk, 58, of Winston-Salem died March 11 at her home. She was born March 1, 1948, in Winston-Salem to Howard Olin and Freda Grubbs Cline. She worked for Fairchild Industrial Products and for Douglas Battery Manufacturing Co. for many years before moving to Midlothian, Va., in 1991. While in Virginia, she was very active in her church and the school PTA as a board member and volunteer coordinator. She also served and volunteered for Chesterfield Little League Baseball and the Catholic Home. She and her husband started their own business, Custom Care Floors Inc., in 1995 and moved back to Winston-Salem in 2001 to live and work and help take care of her parents. She was a member of Pfafftown Christian Church for 44 years, where she sang in the choir she loved for several of those years. She loved music, children and animals. She was preceded in death by her father.

Robert Kirk of the home; daughter Natalie Denise Griffin of Winston-Salem; four sons, David Moore and wife Wanda of Lexington, Dustin Moore and wife Stacey of Winston-Salem, Justin Scott Kirk of Pulman, Wash., and Daniel Kirk of Winston-Salem; brother Lawrence Cline and his wife Jane of Clemmons; her mother-in-law, Faye Johnston of Indian Trail; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Tierney and husband Geoff of Indian Trail; a brother-in-law, Jack Utley of Lincolnton; four granddaughters, Brandy Tussey and husband Levi and Tiffany Moore, all of Lexington, and Kasey and Katie Griffin of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Matthew Moore of Winston-Salem; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, four dogs and many loving friends, including a special friend, Chris Jones and husband Don of Rural Hall.
Funeral services were held at Pfafftown Christian Church with Rev. Dr. Tom Everton officiating. Burial followed at Pfafftown Christian Church cemetery.
