WARRENTON -- Elsie Lee Patterson Smith, 75, of Route 2, Warrenton, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Claude and Ethel Hamm Patterson. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Smith.
Surviving are two sons, Philip R. Smith of Knightdale and Dennis Smith of Warrenton; one brother, Claude Patterson Jr. of Durham; and two sisters, Virginia Aycock of Warrenton and Yvonne Coggin of Nashville.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.

Vincent Thrower
WARRENTON -- Vincent Thrower, 46, of Slocomb, Ala., formerly of Warrenton, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, in Slocomb. He was a Warren County native and the son of Virginia Mayfield and Lee Thrower.
He attended Warren County public schools. He later moved to Maryland with his mother.
Memorial services were conducted Friday in Alabama.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Thrower; one son, Vincent Thrower Jr. of the home; his mother, Virginia Lockley of Wingsmill, Md.; his father, Lee Thrower of New York; his stepfather, Forest Lockley of Wingsmill; three sisters, Denise Cobb and Natalie Pierce, both of Florida, and Cynthia Lockley of Maryland; two brothers, Raymond Lockley of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jeffrey Lockley of Maryland; and his maternal grandmother, Annie Mayfield of Warrenton.

Eleanor C. Buckingham
RICHMOND, Va. -- Eleanor C. “Ms. Buck” Buckingham died Monday, January 14, 2002, just one month before her 90th birthday. She was the daughter of the late Weldon W. and Emma Capps of Manson, N.C., and widow of R.M. “Buck” Buckingham of Richmond.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Steve Buckingham and Cynthia “Andy” Landis of Nashville, TN.
Her remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home’s Staples Mill Chapel, 8510 Staples Mills Rd., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment will be at Forest Lawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lakeside Volunteer Rescue Squad, 2007 Timberlake Ave., Richmond, Va. 23228.

OXFORD -- Julia Noblin Currin, 73, of 415 Noblin Road died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Brantwood Nursing Center.

Patsy L.S. Mize
OXFORD -- Patsy Lane Stephenson Mize, 66, of 5536 Gooch’s Mill Road died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at her residence after an extended illness. She was a Johnson County native and the daughter of the late James Robert and Irene Coats Stephenson.
She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and sang in the choir regularly when able.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Enon Baptist Church by the Rev. James C. Shelley Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Lenward Tyree Mize Jr.; three sons, Robert Lane Mize of Oxford, Lindsay Lee Mize of Roxboro and Lenward Tyree Mize III of Florence, S.C.; four sisters, Isabel S. Coats of Clayton, Virginia S. Rich of Garner, Evelyn S. Coats of Angier and Maggie S. Creech of Havelock; five grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Roy C. Neal Jr.
NORLINA -- Roy Cleveland Neal Jr., 67, of Norlina died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was the son of the late Roy C. Neal Sr. and Estelle Gupton Neal. He was preceded in death by Edna S. Neal.
He was an employee of the former Benton’s Furniture Co. He was a member of Warren Plains Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was the president of the Jaycees and a Rotary Club member. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy G. Neal; four children, Walter Neal of Bracey, Va., Debra Vance of Henderson, Janice King of Conover and Ronald Neal of Henderson; five stepchildren, Richard Gray and Jason Gray of Norlina, Sharon Bowman of Littleton, Sandra Alston of Charlotte and Jody Gray of Wilson; one sister, Anne Ellington of Raleigh; two brothers, Eugene Holt Neal and Edger “Skeeter” Neal, both of Warrenton; and 14 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Warren Plains Baptist Church by the Rev. Lee Joyner. Interment will follow at Fairview cemetery in Warrenton.

Hubert F. Palmer
HENDERSON -- Hubert Franklin Palmer, age 85, a resident of 225 Bellewood Drive, died Monday, January 14, 2002, at his home. He was a native of Durham County and was the son of the late James Cooper and Dora Andrews Palmer.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in the United States and Europe. He was a retired co-owner of the former McInnis and Palmer Motors Inc., and Mr. Palmer served on the National Advertising Committee for Lincoln-Mercury. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the former Home Savings and Loan Association and of the former Pioneer Savings Bank and was a former member of the Henderson Lions Club.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Richard Brand Jr. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Burroughs Palmer of the home; one daughter, Jeanne Palmer Capstaff of Henderson; and one granddaughter, Jennifer Capstaff Trotman and husband William J. Trotman Jr. of Greensboro.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Eric Seawell of Atlanta, Georgia; David Seawell of Spotsylvania, Virginia; Frank Wendt of Columbia, South Carolina; Louis Vaughan of Raleigh, North Carolina; Dr. Stuart Schwartzberg of Henderson, North Carolina; Phillip Moseley of Graham, North Carolina; Harvey D. Jackson of Henderson, North Carolina; and John Zollicoffer of Henderson, North Carolina.

Mary L.H. Pridgen
NORLINA -- Mary Lee Harper Pridgen, 80, of North Street died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Halifax County and the daughter of the late George Harper and Sarah Browning Harper. She was the widow of Leon P. Pridgen.
She and her husband owned and operated Pridgen’s Market for 38 years. She was a member of the Norlina Baptist Church, where she was active in the Ladies Bible Class and the Annie Armstrong Circle until her health failed.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday at Norlina Baptist Church by the Revs. Douglas Cutts and Elton Cooke. Burial will follow in Warren Dale cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Leon Powell Pridgen, and two sons, Larry Carlton Pridgen of Chapel Hill and Robert Wilson Pridgen of Norlina.
Pallbearers will be Grady Harris, Ronnie Locke, Douglas Taylor, Jimmy McAuslen, Jimmy Overby and Bruce Perkinson.

HENDERSON -- Robert Swann, 57, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.

Joseph S.J. Tanner II
PALMER SPRINGS, Va. -- Joseph Speed Jones Tanner II, 56, of Palmer Springs died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002.
He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1968 and started his career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the John H. Kerr Dam as a park ranger. He was an assistant manager at Philpott Lake in Bassett, Va., assistant manager at BW&T Lakes in Demopolis, Ala., assistant manager at Carter’s Lake in Carter’s, Ga., operations manager of Falls Lake in Raleigh for 18 years and operations manager at the John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir.
He was ordained as a deacon at Bayleaf Baptist Church in Raleigh in 1992 and was ordained as a minister in June 2001. He served as pastor of Sanford Memorial Baptist Church in Brodnax.
Surviving are his wife, Verna Atkins Tanner; a daughter, Amy T. Geil of Kennesaw, Ga.; a son, Joseph Speed Jones Tanner III of Richmond, Va.; his mother, Lorene J. Tanner of Palmer Springs; a brother, Jacob Thomas Tanner Jr. of McLean, Va.; two sisters, Nancy T. Mazzocchi of Cary and Pett T. Brands of Taylorsville; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Bayleaf Baptist Church in Raleigh by Dr. Ronald W. Rowe and pastor Joseph Speed Jones Tanner III. Interment was held at 3 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church cemetery in Palmer Springs by the Revs. Edward H. Johnson and Van Wheeler.
The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home in South Hill, Va.

Oza F. Ayscue
HENDERSON -- Oza Irene Faulkner Ayscue, age 95, a resident of 4085 Glebe Road, died Friday morning in a local nursing home. She was a native of Franklin County, daughter of the late James Edd and Florence Della Ball Faulkner, and the widow of W.G. “Taylor” Ayscue.
She was a homemaker and much loved by family as well as community. She will be remembered as a sharing, dedicated, generous mother. She was the oldest living member of the Island Creek Baptist Church and was a member of the Hassie Clark Sunday School Class, the Women’s Missionary Union, and was a former Sunday school teacher and Bible school teacher.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Island Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Bosnic, the Rev. Johnson Gupton and the Rev. Lyman Wilson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by two grandsons, Carl Ronald “Ronnie” Perkinson and wife Gale Franklin Perkinson of Henderson and Royce Taylor Perkinson and wife Joyce Matthews Perkinson of Warrenton; five grandchildren, Andrew “Andy” James Perkinson and wife Gina Clayton Perkinson, Adam Jason Perkinson and fiancé Kecia Dawn Price, Aaron Johnathan Perkinson, Heather Greenway and husband Stuart Greenway, and Bradley “Brad” Taylor Perkinson; one great-granddaughter, Carly Andrea Perkinson; two step-great-grandchildren, Christopher Boone and Clayton “Clay” Gentry; one sister-in-law, Emma Greenway Faulkner of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Ayscue Perkinson, and her son-in-law Milton Andrew Perkinson; and three brothers, John Henry Faulkner, Edward “Red” Faulkner and Woodrow Faulkner.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Gale and Ronnie Perkinson at 4201 Glebe Road.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Charles Faulkner, J.W. Abbott, and her four great-grandsons, Brad Perkinson, Andy Perkinson, Adam Perkinson and Aaron Perkinson.

HENDERSON -- William Burwell, 80, of Guardian Care Nursing Facility has died.

Alvin J. Critcher
HENDERSON -- Alvin John Critcher, 76, of 531 Swain Drive died Friday morning, Jan. 18, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Walter R. and Bessie Williamson Critcher. He was a retired veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Sevier County Masonic Lodge and Shrine Club in Tennessee and was an employee of Wal-Mart.
He was a member of Carey Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Ray McDonald. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Colclough Critcher; one son, Alan Critcher of Henderson; and one daughter, Cynthia C. Parker of Gatlinburg, Tenn. He was preceded in death by one son, Lee Alvin Critcher.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Keith Williamson, Paul Swizer, David Uzman, Carl Pulley, Horace Newton, Bobby Critcher and Dennis Williamson.

NEW YORK -- Richard T. “Bro” Faines, 72, of New York, formerly of Vance County, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, in New York. He was the son of the late Tom Faines and Catherine Terry Faines.
He was educated in the Vance County school system.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ by the Rev. Akeem Wright. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Rebecca Thompson Faines; two daughters, Henrietta Mapp of Jamaica, N.Y., and Catherine Joseph of Williamsboro; four sisters, Arnice Faines of Jamaica, N.Y., and Bessie Thompson, Amelia Jefferson and Hilda Jefferson, all of Williamsboro; one brother, Roosevelt Faines of Williamsboro; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Floral bearers will be nieces.

HENDERSON -- Funeral services for Betty Esther Williamson, 84, who died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Greater Refuge Church in Henderson by Bishop Rufus Hargrove.
Burial will follow at Oakwood cemetery in Louisburg. Dinner and fellowship will be held at the Louisburg Senior Citizen Center in Shannon Village Shopping Center on Bickett Boulevard.

William Burwell Jr.
HENDERSON -- William Burwell Jr., 80, of the Guardian Care Nursing Facility died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at the facility. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late William Burwell Sr. and Minnie Turner Burwell.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Henderson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Edith Harrison of Louisburg; four sons, Robert L. Burwell and William O. Burwell, both of Henderson, William J. Burwell of Norlina and Eugene Burwell of Townsville; three sisters, Cleo Mason of Norlina, Lucy Travis of New York and Dedis Daniels of Atkins, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

MANSON -- Charlene Hunt Henderson, 32, of Manson died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson after a sudden illness.

Moses T. Jarrell
HENDERSON -- Moses Thomas Jarrell, 71, of 501 North Ave., Brodnax, Virginia, died Friday morning, January 18, 2002, at his home.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Annie Potter Jarrell.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are four sisters, Maggie Harris and Myrtle Parham, both of Henderson, Catherine Floyd and Ruth Jarrell, both of Maryland; two brothers, David Jarrell of Henderson and Robert Jarrell of Charleston, S.C.; and a special friend, Maebell Jones of Brodnax, Virginia.
The family will be at the home of Maggie Harris, on 1189 Carey Chapel Road, Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m.

WARRENTON -- Mary Boyd Davis, 51, of the Wise community, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Friday at Providence Church in Wise. The Rev. Corey Taylor will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Ralphe E. Davis of the home; her children, Cornelius, Torrance and Lucretia; one stepdaughter, Cecelia Alston; 11 grandchildren; her mother, Maggie Plummer; two brothers, Paul Plummer Jr. and George Twitty; and four sisters, Janet Randolph, Louise Price, Helen Robinson and Connie Williams.

James G. Elam
WARRENTON -- James Garland Elam, 81, died Wednesday at Senior Citizen’s Nursing Home in Henderson. Mr. Elam was a Mecklenburg County, Va. native born September 10, 1920 to the late Willie Lew Elam and Lillie Puryear Elam, having lived in Oxford for a number of years.
He was retired FHA Supervisor for Warren County, U.S. Navy Veteran, a member of Warrenton Baptist Church where he was a Deacon, a member of the American Legion and served on the Warren County Planning Board.
Rev. David Brooks will conduct memorial services 2 p.m. Friday at Warrenton Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Nettie Elam White and husband, Chocky, of Henderson, and Beth Elam Saylor of Raleigh; two sons, James Patrick Elam and wife, Lou Ann, of Warrenton, and Willie Joseph Elam of Lawrenceburg, Ky.; two sisters, Louise Elam Spruill, formerly of Plymouth, now residing in Tarboro, and Virginia Elam Colenda of Sterling, Va.; seven grandchildren, Cara White Robinette, Charles Craig White II, Andrew Brent White, Laura Beth Elam, Jamie Garland Elam, Casey Elizabeth Saylor and Charles Edward Saylor III.

James E. Hicks
RALEIGH -- James Edward Hicks, 87, of 3105 Constance Circle, Raleigh, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002, at Rex Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Vance County to the late Otha J. and Bessie Short Hicks. He was formerly of Roxboro.
Mr. Hicks was a retired farmer. He was a member of Allen Creek Baptist Church in Vance County.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ellis Hicks of Raleigh; two daughters, Cathrine H. Watkins and Peggy H. Robinson, both of Raleigh; one sister, Hazel H. Norwood of Oxford; three half-sisters, Betty H. Boyd of Oxford, Margaret H. Robinson of Henderson, Mary Ann H. Howell of Wilson; one stepsister, Rose Cottrell of Wilson; two half-brothers, Ben Hicks and Sonny Hicks, both of Henderson; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and three special friends, Morris Rowland, David Boon and Steve Polkinghorne.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2002, in the Brooks & White Chapel with the Rev. Herbert Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church cemetery.
