CREEDMOOR -- John J. Winston, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Creedmoor by the Rev. Norris Trice, assisted by the Rev. Larry McElroy. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 tonight at Creedmoor Elementary School.

James M. Currin
OXFORD -- James Marshall Currin, 76, of 408 Pine Tree Road, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late John and Elizabeth Blackwell Currin Sr.
He was a member of West Oxford Baptist Church and was retired from Oxford Ford and most recently working at Tires Plus.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Oxford by the Rev. Terry Hall and Dr. Jim Whitehead. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife, Amy Womack Currin of the home; two daughters, Marsha C. Lloyd of Oxford and Tanya C. Faucette of Oxford; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise C. Hobson of Yanceyville, Mary Grace C. Cash of Butner; and two brothers, John S. Currin Jr. of Oxford and R.M. Currin of Creedmoor.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Oney N. Hargrove
HENDERSON -- Oney Nowell Hargrove, 85, of 11760 N.C. 39 Hwy. North, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Calvary United Holy Church.
The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Dorothy H. Venable, 46 Howell Road in the Townsville community.

Dr. William B. Tarry Jr.
OXFORD -- Dr. William Burwell Tarry Jr., 79, of 128 Pine Cone Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late William Burwell and Evelene Royster Tarry.
He was a graduate of William & Mary College, the Medical College of Virginia, received his masters degree from V.P.I., served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in WWII, and began his medical practice in Oxford in 1954 with Dr. James R. Tarry and Dr. John W. Watson, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Oxford Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and elder, a member of the staff of Granville Hospital, serving as trustee, a member of the Granville Co. School for 20 years, a member of the Kerr Lake Commission and served as chairman of the board of the Richard H. Thornton Library.
Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Nutbush Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Graham McChesney and the Rev. Norman M. MacDowell. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Peyton Clements Tarry; his daughter, Sallie T. Kerr of Davidson; his sons, William Burwell Tarry III of Bronxville, N.Y., Wallace Clements Tarry of Burlington, Vt., Albin Rawlins Tarry of Charlotte; and 11 grandchildren.
Omission of flowers is requested. The family will receive friends at the home.

M.W. Ayscue
HENDERSON, N.C. -- Melvin Washington “M.W.” Ayscue, Jr., 76, of 1110 Epsom-Rocky Ford Road, Henderson, N.C., in the Epsom Community, died Saturday, January 5, 2002, in Maria Parham Hospital.
Born in Franklin County, he was the son of the late Melvin Wellons Ayscue, Sr. and Mary Tharrington Ayscue.
Mr. Ayscue was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and was a member of Liberty Vance United Church of Christ.
Funeral services were held Monday, at 2:00 p.m., at Liberty Vance United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. John R. Yevak. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel Louise Coker Ayscue; two daughters, Camilla A. Roberson, of Louisburg, and Krista A. Hilliard, of Epsom; two sons, Melvin T. “Tommy” Ayscue, of Epsom, and David W. Ayscue, of Roxboro; two sisters, Sallie Mae A. Cottrell and Fannie Pearl A. Faulkner, both of Henderson; two brothers, Richard G. Ayscue and Calvin S. Ayscue, both of Epsom; eight grandchildren, Tricia A. Seymour, Melanie A. Jenkins, Jennifer R. East, Lane Roberson, Amanda Hilliard, Travis Lewis, Chasity Hilliard and Ashley Ayscue; and one great-grandson, Schafer Seymour. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys A. Edwards and Elaine A. Wrenn; and two brothers, Jack T. Ayscue and Donald F. Ayscue.
The family received friends Sunday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they were at the home of Tommy Ayscue, 1119 Epsom-Rocky Ford Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jimmy Eaves, Mike Ayscue, Jonathan Renn, Charles Faulkner, James Poythress, Donald Ayscue, Keith Wrenn and Jim Bowen.

Roy Albert Burch
WAYNESVILLE -- Roy Albert Burch, age 90, formerly of Henderson, died Thursday, January 3, 2002, in Bedford, Texas, following a period of declining health.
He was born the son of the late John Albert and Emma Gillespie Burch on November 25, 1911, in Canton, North Carolina. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Burch Matthews, and her husband, Dr. Hugh Matthews.
Roy attended Canton High, Weaver Junior College, N.C. State University and graduated from the University of Tennessee. He served four years in the Navy Seabee division. He worked with Carolina Power and Light Company for 26 years. The last eight years he worked in Henderson as a manager, retiring in 1976. Roy and Ellen had a wonderful retirement moving to the mountains in Waynesville, N.C., in 1981, to golf and garden. Having been very active in church and civic groups, Roy will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor and the positive effect he had on many lives.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen Frazer Burch; two sons, John Burch of Ft. Pierce, Florida, and David Burch and his wife, Cathy, of Beaufort, N.C.; one daughter, Joan Burch Pruit and her husband, Tom, of Grapevine, Texas; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be held at 12 Noon, Wednesday, January 9, 2002, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Wright Spears and Tom Pruit officiating. Burial will be at Bon-A-Venture cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12 Noon prior to the services.

Ruthie F.R. Duke
CREEDMOOR -- Ruthie Forsyth Roberts Duke, 93, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Lee Ander and Luenia Walker Forsyth.
She was a Christian and a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church for 65 years and a Sunday school teacher for 35 years. She has been a resident of Wake County since 1946.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Olive Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Hollowell. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens on Cheek Road.
Surviving are her husband of 15 years, William Bush Duke; two daughters, Barbara Jean Currin of Creedmoor and Linda R. Allen of Clemmons; two sons, John T. Roberts of Creedmoor and E.H. Roberts of Durham; a sister, Annie Bell Beck of Northside; and a brother, Roger Forsyth of Northside; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 49 years, Eulis T. Roberts; a daughter, Nell R. Emory; and great-grandchild, Ashlee M. Currin.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and other times at 3925 Old Weaver Trail.

Grady L. Faulkner
HENDERSON -- Grady Louis Faulkner, 82, of 948 Abbott Road, Henderson, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at his home. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late Benjamin M. Faulkner Sr., and Maggie Mangum Faulkner. He was the widower of Luna Pendleton Faulkner.
He retired after 25 years as an electrician with Burkart-Carolina Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II .
Memorial services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Frank Sossamon. A private burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a son, Phillip H. Williams of the home; and five grandchildren.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Lucinda Goode
SOUL CITY -- Lucinda Goode, 71, of Soul City, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Manson Baptist Church by the Rev. Cranford Davis, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one sister, Geneva Goode of Manson; and one brother, Fred Willie Goode of Henderson.

Oney N. Hargrove
HENDERSON -- Oney Nowell Hargrove, 85, of 46 Howell Road, in the Townsville community, died Saturday, Jan., 5, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late John and Mamie Kearney Nowell.
She attended Vance County schools and earned a diploma from Vance-Granville Community College and other courses from East Carolina University in Greenville.
She was employed by Franklin-Vance-Warren Head Start for 30 years.
At an early age, she joined Mt. Calvary Holy Church where she was a deaconess, Sunday school teacher, church secretary, missionary, mother of the church and director of Vacation Bible School.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Mt. Calvary Holy Church. The Elder Alphonso Hargrove will officiate, assisted by Elders Hurley Richardson and Harold Jackson and the Revs. Michael Epps and John Miles. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary cemetery.
Surviving are one son, George Hargrove of Oxford; one daughter, the Rev. Dorothy H. Venable of Henderson; one brother, Daniel Nowell of Henderson; two sisters, Mary Ann Henderson of Henderson and Mamie Terry of Townsville; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
The body will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the service.

Carol M. Mills
HENDERSON -- The funeral services for Carol Mae Mills, 74, postponed by the snow from Thursday, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at North Henderson Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J. Hines Adams Sr. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.

Ronald E. Parrish Sr.
BUTNER -- Ronald Edward Parrish Sr., 65, of 607 25th St., died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Durham County native and the son of the late Edward Wise Parrish.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Butner and was retired from the state.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Butner by Dr. Gene Garrison. Burial will be in South Granville Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Sara Pickard Parrish of the home; two daughters, Rhonda P. Key of Stem and Linda L. Bray of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, Ronald E. Parrish Jr. of Wilton; his mother, Lena Mincey of Durham; one sister, Donna P. Calhoon of Pittsboro; two brothers, Norman S. Parrish of Durham and Lynwood E. Parrish of Efland; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Bennett L. Strickland
HENDERSON -- Bennett Long Strickland, age 76, a resident of 1376 Old Watkins Road, died Sunday night at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late William Bryant and Annie Long Strickland. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Army, a retired tobacco farmer, and was a member of the Rehobeth United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Benjamin Rooker.
He is survived by one son, Danny Bryant Strickland and wife, Gayla of Henderson; three sisters, Mildred S. Burroughs and husband, Billy of Oxford, Neva S. Thompson and husband, Eddie of Henderson, and Linda S. Rowe and husband, Dee of Havelock; two grandsons, Bryan Strickland and Lance Strickland and wife, Dolly; four great grandsons, Michael Ryan Strickland, Conly Blake Strickland, Tyler Thomas Strickland, and Hunter Scott Strickland all of Henderson, seventeen nieces and nephews, 23 great nieces and nephews and three great-great-nieces and nephews
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 8:30 P.M. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Danny and Gayla Strickland at 1525 Old Watkins Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be: Bryan Strickland, Lance Strickland, Butch Burroughs, Tommy Burroughs, Dale Thompson, and Mike Strickland.

Wesley W. Young IV
HENDERSON -- Wesley Washington Young IV, 82, 921 South Garnett Street, Henderson, N.C., died Monday, January 7, 2002, in Maria Parham Hospital.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late James Madison and Francis Thompson Young.
Mr. Young was a retired associate of the former M.E. Whitmore Inc. Earlier in life, he was associated with the E.G. Davis Company. A graduate of Riverside military Academy, in Gainsville, Georgia, he was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in Italy during World War II. He was a former chairman of the Vance County Selective Service Board, and was a member of the Henderson Civitan Club and the American Legion, Post 60. He was a lifelong member of The Church of the Holy Innocents.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m., at The Church of the Holy Innocents, conducted by Father Dan Barker. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Whitmore Young; a son, Wesley Washington Young V, of Hartsville, South Carolina; and two grandchildren, Leslie Gayle Young and Wesley Washington Young VI, both of Hartsville, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucy Fuller Young Connell and Mary Francis Young Plummer; and a brother, James Madison Young.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:00 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Robert Gill Young, Jr., Ashton Madison Young, Wallace Graham Cawthorne, John Madison Foster, David Michael Rainey, Milon J. Hamilton, Stephen Goodyear Flannagan, and John Hilliard Zollicoffer, Jr.

ANGIER -- Willie Lee Mangum Adams Critcher, 92, of Angier, a native of Granville Co., died Monday.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Angier Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Enon Baptist Church near Oxford.
Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Clinton and Bettie Adams of Angier and Harold and Faye Adams of Apex; sister, Sophia M. Montague of Angier; brother, Bennie T. Mangum of Angier.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William S. “Bill” Critcher; brothers, John D. Mangum and Dossie Mangum; and sister, Lizzie Dupree.
The family was at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Angier, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and at other times at 469 Tippett Road, Angier.

AXTELL -- John Gordon Ricks, 43, of Axtell died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002. He was the son of Spurgeon Ricks and Josephine Aycock Ricks of Halifax County.
He was a farm manager for Perdue Farms.
Surviving are his wife, Donna Killian Ricks; two sons, Jeff Aycock and Jonathan Ricks of Axtell; one daughter, Stacy Ricks of Axtell; and three brothers, Spurgeon Ricks of Littleton, Jimmy Ricks of Littleton and Michael Ricks of Wilmington.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton by the Rev. Rob Evans. Interment will follow at the Jenkins family cemetery in Littleton.

Linard Fields
STOVALL -- Linard Fields, 71, of 324 Owens St. died Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Durham.
He was a member of Stovall First Baptist Church. He was a veteran.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stovall First Baptist Church by the Revs. Terry Taylor and Harry L. Williams. Burial will be in the New Jonathan Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are three stepdaughters, Jean Lawson of Upper Marlboro, Md., Shirley Davis of Stovall and Norma Daye of Durham; one stepson, Frank Smith of Stovall; and one brother, Oscar Fields of Greenville.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
