Larry Hargrove

ROUGEMONT -- Larry Hargrove, 47, of 1017 U.S. 158 in Rougemont died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Warren County native and the son of the late George and Jennie Hargrove and the foster son of the late Arthur Lee Brame.
He attended Vance County public schools and graduated from Vance Senior High School. He was a member of Oak Level United Church of Christ.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Garnes Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Elizabeth Brame and Opie Terrell. Interment will be in the Nutbush Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his foster mother, Beatrice Brame Hanks; four brothers, James Hargrove, Vernon Lee Hargrove and Joseph Hargrove, all of Henderson, and Jessie Hargrove of Raleigh; three foster sisters, Joann Kittrell, Joyce Turrentine and Audrey Davis; and three foster brothers, Arthur Brame, Robert Brame and Curtis Brame.
The family will receive friends at the home of Beatrice Brame Hanks, 5354 Satterwhite Point Road, Henderson.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Service.

Maggie Harrison

WARRENTON -- Maggie Harrison, 68, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in New York.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Church in Manson by pastor Ralph Steed. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sisters, Henrietta Steed of Raleigh and Nannie Jones of Palmer Springs, Va.; and six brothers, Percell Harrison, Levi Harrison, Amos Harrison and the Rev. Thomas Harrison, all of Oine, Matthew Harrison of Burlington, and Albert Harrison of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Bettie T. Hicks-Bragg

OXFORD -- Bettie Tunstall Hicks-Bragg, 91, of The Granville House died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late John Alexander and Annie Latta Tunstall.
She was a member of Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church and was a health care worker at Murdoch Center and Granville Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church by Dr. Ronn McCracken. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her son, William Lee “Bill” Tunstall of Butner; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Minnie Lee Clayton of Oxford. She was preceded in death by husbands Frank A. Hicks and Owen V. Bragg.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church Building Fund, Fairport Road, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church before the service and other times at the home of William and Wilma Tunstall, 607 19th St., Butner, N.C. 27509.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Carol M. Mills

HENDERSON -- Carol Mae Mills, 74, of 1707 Old Norlina Road died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Fred C. Mills Sr. and Cora Mary Walker Butler Mills.
She was a retired office manager with the former Watkins Hardware Store. She was a member of North Henderson Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at North Henderson Baptist Church by the Rev. J. Hines Adams Sr. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a brother, Benny W. Mills of the home. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce Allen Mills and Fred C. Mills Jr.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Wrenn and the men of North Henderson Baptist Church.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, 1211 N. Garnett St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Rufus R. Pace

FRANKLINTON -- Rufus Rancher Pace, 68, of 78 Pace Way died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Wake Medical Center. He was the son of the late Elsie Kearney and Robert William Pace.
He served 18 years as chairman of the Franklinton city school board. In 1987, he was awarded the Raleigh Dingman Award by the North Carolina School Board Association. In 1992, the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce recognized him as the Citizen of the Year. He was a member of the Ebenezer Methodist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of American Legion Post 52 and a charter member of Mitchiner’s Crossroads Fire Department.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ebenezer Methodist Church by the Revs. Sidney Stafford and Rob Kantner. Entombment will be in Fairview cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Williams Pace; four children, Teresa Edwards of Franklinton, Steve Pace of Youngsville, Randy Pace of Raleigh and Rusty Pace of Franklinton; a brother, P.G. Pace of Henderson; a sister, Patsy Barefoot of Franklinton; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Sandling Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Larry Wilder, Joe Jenkins, Tommy Piper, Steve James, Larry Thompson and Ryan Wilder.
Arrangements are by Sandling Funeral Home of Franklinton.

Lillie W. Robertson

HENDERSON -- Lillie Mae Wright Robertson, 88, of 365 Southerland Mill Road died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at her home. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Otis Benjamin and Lizzie Falkner Wright. She was the widow of William Edgar Robertson Sr.
She was a homemaker and a former member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Michael E. Rocheleau.
Surviving are two daughters, Jessie R. Burnette of Henderson and Mildred R. Hicks of Fayetteville; two sons, William Edgar Robertson Jr. and James Melvin “Jimmy” Robertson, both of Henderson; two sisters, Grace W. Kearney and Dorothy W. Kearney, both of Henderson; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel W. Harris, Helen W. Edwards and Nellie W. Fleming; and four brothers, Roy Wright, Perry “Bill” Wright, Durward Wright and Otha Wright.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Jessie Burnette, 395 Southerland Mill Road, Henderson.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 2440 S. Cokesbury Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.

Sidney Taylor

WARRENTON -- Sidney Taylor of the Warren Hills Nursing Center died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Roberta B. White

EMPORIA -- Roberta Briggs White, age 77, died Dec. 30, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, George Washington White of Emporia; one daughter, Donna W. Massey and husband, William, of Colonial Heights; four sons, Ronald White and wife Frances of Wake Forest, N.C., Randy White and wife Janet, Danny White, and Donny White and Sara, all of Emporia; three sisters, Virginia Bradsher, Joyce Weathers and Edna Henley, all of Henderson, N.C.; two brothers, Fred Briggs of Youngsville, N.C., and Clarence Briggs of Wake Forest, N.C.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, January 3, at the Echols Funeral Home Chapel, Emporia. Interment to follow in the Gardens of Emporia.
Family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Melroy Alston

WARREN COUNTY -- Melroy Alston, 44, of Warren County died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Jones Chapel Baptist Church. The Rev. Phyllis T. Royal will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Latisha M. Ballard of Georgia and Tanisha and Tamisha Alston, both of Linden, N.J.; his mother, Beatrice Alston of Norlina; his father, Clyde Alston of Fayetteville; two sisters, Melraye D. Alston of East Orange, N.J., and Myra Alston of Norlina; one brother, Marlon Alston of Norlina; three grandchildren; and his maternal grandparents, James and Sadie Jones of Norlina.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Virginia W.T. Boswell

WISE -- Virginia Worley Thompson Boswell, 83, of Wise died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was a native of Marion and the daughter of the late Zollie Worley and Lizzie Sigmon Worley. She was a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church and the widow of Richard Thompson Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Revs. Leon Gupton and Ronnie Faircloth. Burial will follow in Jerusalem United Methodist Church cemetery.
Surviving are four sons, Richard Thompson Jr., William Thompson Sr. and Jack Thompson, all of Wise, and Curtis Thompson of Pittsboro; three daughters, Sue Moseley of Wise, Betty Williford of Oxford and Lois Greene of Kenbridge, Va.; four sisters, Maggie Hale of Roanoke Rapids, Carrie Belle Alexander of Emporia, Va., Gale Johnson of South Hill, Va., and Nell Garnett of Farmville, Va.; two brothers, James Buck Worley of Boydton, Va., and William Worley of Emporia, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be William Thompson, David Thompson, Todd Penny, Robert Davis, Brian Young and Kevin VanBuren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Blaylock Funeral Home.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Margaret T. Browning

NORFOLK, Va. -- Margaret Turner Browning, 85, of Norfolk died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001. She was a native of Henderson and the widow of John Browning.
She worked for many years at Pretlow Branch Library. After she retired from the library, she volunteered for 19 years at the library at DePaul Medical Center School of Nursing. She was also an active member of her church until her death.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 28 at Miles Memorial United Methodist Church, 9450 Granby St., Norfolk, with the Rev. William Wright officiating.
Surviving are her children, Robert Myrick Browning and Elizabeth Browning Bailey; brothers Rowland Turner, Durward Turner and Robert Turner, all of Henderson, and James Turner of Huntsville, Ala.; and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Miles Memorial United Methodist Church.
Arrangements were by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel.

Mary E. Edison

WARRENTON -- Mary Elizabeth Edison of the Perrytown community died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Larry Hargrove

Larry Hargrove, 47, of Rougemont, son of the late George Jerry Hargrove and Jennie T. Hargrove, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Elizabeth M. Brame and the Rev. Opie Terrell.
Surviving are four brothers, James Hargrove, Ver-non Lee Hargrove and Joseph Hargrove, all of Henderson, and Jessie Hargrove of Raleigh; two nieces, Reginia Hargrove and Pamela Hargrove; one nephew, George Hargrove of Henderson; three aunts, Lillie Andrew of Williamsburg, Mollie T. Bullock of Manson and Edith Seward of Norlina; and one great-aunt, Minnie H. Terry of Manson.

Angel A. Johnson

OXFORD -- Angel Allison Johnson, 5-month-old daughter of Cynthia Goss and Joseph Johnson, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at South Granville Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Eddie Mauldin.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her maternal grandparents, Carolyn and Earl Messer of Oxford; her maternal great-grandparents, Johnny and Sandy Goss of Creedmoor, Mick and Leora James Goss of Creedmoor, and Edith Averett of Butner; her paternal grandparents, Bertha and James Johnson of California; and her paternal great-grandparents, Geraldine and Frankie Overton of Creedmoor, Jesse and Brenda Thigpen of Stem, and Ruth and Richard Jenkins of Butner.
Visitation for the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home of Carolyn and Earl Messer, 1013 U.S. 158 West in Rougemont
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Pauline E. Watson

OXFORD -- Pauline Elliott Watson, 66, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Granville Medical Center. She was the widow of George Thomas Watson Sr.
She was a retired dispatcher and had been employed with the Oxford Police Department and Granville County Sheriff’s Department.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elmwood cemetery in Oxford.
Surviving are two daughters, Gale Watson Sanford and Patricia Watson Watts, both of Oxford; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, George Thomas Watson Jr.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 138 Webb Place in Oxford.

Herschell W. Grissom

HENDERSON -- Herschell Wilbert “Mickey” Grissom, age 64, a resident of 83 Rose Lane, died Wednesday, January 16, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Vance Co. and was the son of the late William Wilbert and Annie Abbott Grissom. He was a retired truck driver, having worked for Dick Yancey Trucking Co.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by three sisters, Becky G. Reaves and Gloria Ann Grissom, both of Henderson, and Judy G. Wagner of Roanoke Rapids; one brother, John H. Grissom of Homosassa, Fla.; and special friend Oveida Peoples of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home of Henry and Becky Reaves, 32 Holly Circle.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Vance County Humane Society, P.O. Box 1552, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are being handled by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Robert Swann

HENDERSON -- Robert Swann, 57, of 239 Morgan Road died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of Charleston, S.C., and the son of Elizabeth Campbell Taylor and the late Robert Campbell.
He was an independent owner-operator in the trucking business.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ by the Rev. Akeem Wright, assisted by the Rev. Glendora Hargrove. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Hargrove Swann; his mother, Elizabeth Taylor of Henderson; a daughter, Antoinette Campbell of Miami; a son, Curtis Hargrove of Richmond, Va.; four brothers, Junious Campbell, Robert Campbell, Lawrence Campbell and Jody Campbell, all of New York; six sisters, Diane Campbell, Alberta Campbell, Denise Campbell, Jeanette Campbell, Sherry Campbell and Binita Campbell, all of New York; his stepmother, Eunice Campbell of New York; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 239 Morgan Road in the Williamsboro community.
Pallbearers are Joseph Geathers, Anthony Geathers, Timothy Geathers, Columbus Faines, Ronald Geathers, James Geathers, Arthur Ravenel and John Jones Jr.
The body will be on view at the funeral home until being taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary-Davis Royster Funeral Service of Henderson.

Annie C.D. Teague

TAYLORSVILLE -- Annie Collier Dickerson Teague, 89, of Valley Nursing Center, Taylorsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Valley Nursing Center. She was a native of Vance County and the daughter of the late Olivia Collier.
She was a retired certified nursing assistant and a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Dickerson, and a stepson, Glenn R. Moss.
Surviving are three sons, Harry Dickerson of Taylorsville, Pete Dickerson of Lenoir and Willard Dickerson of Hiddenite; five daughters, Rosa Woody of Taylorsville, Jenny McDaniel of Lenoir, Peggy Teague of Taylorsville, Patsy Townsend of Lenoir and Merrill Kistler of Claremont; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Bethel Advent Christian Church by the Rev. Bobby Call and the Rev. Larry Testerman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the church and other times at the home of daughter Peggy Teague on Studebaker Lane in Taylorsville.

David M. Walker

HENDERSON -- David Martin Walker, 39, of 402 Country Acres Road died Tuesday at Franklin Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Jackie Ray and Jean Mills Walker.
He was owner and operator of Walker’s Professional Painting Co. and was the pastor of Spirit of Christ Ministries in Henderson. He was a member of Ark of the Covenant International.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the J.M. White Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald Harold, the Rev. Melvin Marks and the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Deanna Owens Walker; two daughters, Laura Gail Walker of Henderson and Magan Lianda Walker of the home; one son, David Joshua Walker of the home; one brother; Michael Todd Walker of Henderson; and two sisters, Donna Leighann Hedgepeth of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Amy Jennifer Walker of Macon.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jerry Wilson, J.C. Edwards, J.W. Joyner, Joey Gibson, Tony Abbott, Mike Welborn, Billy Hayes, David Gibson Jr. and Curtis Harp Jr.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
