Doris C. Newsome
HENDERSON -- Doris Corese Newsome, 66, of 1150 Chavis Road, Kittrell, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Jessie Mae Greene and Benjamin Hammond. She was the widow of James J. Newsome.
She attended Vance County Schools and was employed as an in-home care provider for Mr. and Mrs. Richard Moore of Fairport, upon her retirement from Pine Haven Rest Home. She also was employed by J.P. Taylor Tobacco Co.
She was a member of Kittrell First Baptist Church, where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. MacArthur Clements. Burial will follow in Kittrell First Baptist Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are two children, James Joseph Newsome and Belinda Newsome, both of the home; one brother, Larry Hammond of Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Elizabeth Holden of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.
Dora B. Robbins
WARRENTON -- Dora Burchette Robbins, 98, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at the Senior Center of Henderson.
She was a native of Warren County, the daughter of the late James Miller Burchette Sr. and Mary Jane King Burchette.
After early education at Public School No. 9 in Warren Plains, she attended Elizabeth City State Normal Teachers College for four years. After graduating from Elizabeth City, she enrolled at the North Carolina Central School of Nursing in Durham and became certified as a public health nurse. She graduated in 1925 from the Lincoln Hospital Training School of Durham.
For three years, she worked as a registered nurse in the North Carolina Mutual Medical Department of Durham before beginning a career of more than 25 years as a public health nurse in the Warren County Health Department.
On June 3, 1931, she married Bennie H. Robbins, who died Feb. 1, 1961. They had no children.
In the early 1930s, she joined All Saints’ Episcopal Church, where she served as junior warden and treasurer and held membership in the Episcopal Churchwomen.
A funeral will be conducted on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. by the Rev. Marvin B. Aycock at All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the King-Burchette family cemetery.
There are no immediate survivors.
The family will meet with friends at the Warrenton home of Ethel Harris.
The body will be on view at the funeral home today from 4 to 7:30 p.m. and will lie in state at the church for one hour before the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to All Saints’ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 578, Warrenton, N.C. 27589.
Arrangements are by Brown’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
Robert L. Bullock Sr.
HENDERSON -- Robert Lee Bullock Sr., 62, of 210 Chestnut Alley died at his residence. He was a Vance County native and the son of Lillie Bullock Debnam.
He joined St. Paul United Church of Christ at an early age.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Davis Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Turrentine. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Emma Hargrove Bullock of Henderson; two sons, Erwin O. Hargrove and Robert Lee Bullock Jr., both of Henderson; his mother, Lillie B. Debnam of Henderson; two sisters, Barbara Bennett and Clementine Robinson, both of Henderson; one brother, William Braxton of New Jersey; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Emma Bullock, 125 Bearpond Road, Lot 7, and the residence of Lillie Debnam, 728 John St.
The family has requested no viewing.

Laura R. Davis
WARRENTON -- Laura Richardson Davis, 73, of the Hecks Grove community, Warrenton, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Warrenton by the Rev. John Gooch, pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Debra Ricks of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one son, Kerwin Davis of Ridgeway; four grandchildren; her mother, Bessie Richardson of Warrenton; two sisters, Clevenia Alston of Warrenton and Lois Decker of Brooklyn; and four brothers, James Richardson and Percy Richardson, both of Warrenton, Martin Richardson of Durham and Calvin Richardson of Marietta, Ga.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
Maggie Harrison
WARRENTON -- Maggie Harrison, 68, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in New York.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.
Frances H. Maynard
WARRENTON -- Frances Hunt Maynard, 86, of Colonial Lodge, 144 N. Main St., died Friday morning, Dec. 28, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Warren County and was the daughter of the late John and Viola Short Hunt and the widow of Earl Howard Maynard Sr. She was a retired private-duty nurse.
She was a member of the Sulpher Springs Baptist Church and the adult Sunday School class and was a former Sunday school teacher and a former leader of the Girls Auxiliary.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Sulpher Springs Baptist Church by Dr. Julian Mills. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by one daughter, Patsy M. Teague of Indianapolis; one son, Alvin Maynard of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Ora Lee Powell of Henderson; one brother, Harold Hunt of Henderson; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family received friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Ralph Maynard, Cameron Maynard, Doug Roberts, Ronny West, Howard Maynard, Mike Reavis, Tony Hill and Henry Teague.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home of Henderson.
Willie Richardson
HENDERSON -- Willie Richardson, 73, of 539 High St. died at Maria Parham Hospital.
He is the husband of Juanita Richardson.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Madeline T. Ritchey
OXFORD -- Madeline T. Ritchey, 80, of Palm Coast, Fla., formerly of Sunset Road in Oxford, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001. She was a native Butler, Pa., and the daughter of the late Martin Kaib and Rose Stemmer Kaib. She was the widow of Fred C. Ritchey.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a member of the North Carolina Extension and Community Association (Oxford Club) and the Red Hat Society.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church by the Rev. Bill Long. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are her daughters, Shirley Ann Hessler of Palm Coast, Fla., and Donna Marie George of Fort Myers, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Omission of flowers is requested. Memorials may be made to a local library.

Mary Ann S. Boyd
HENDERSON -- Mary Ann Smith Boyd, 74, of 480 N.C. 39 Loop Road died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in a local nursing home.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Forrest and Daisy Hoyle Smith. She was the widow of Harold Campbell Boyd.
She was a homemaker and was a retired employee of the old 7-Eleven Food Store. She was a member of Gillburg United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at Gillburg United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tom Denny. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are four daughters, Carolyn Ann Boyd Dudley, Belinda Lee Boyd Collier, Deborah Smith Boyd Harris and Helen Candace Boyd Adcock, all of Henderson; a son, John Harold Boyd of Ahoskie; a sister, Rose Smith Finch of Wake Forest; a brother, Richard Gary Smith of Henderson; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Timothy Dudley, Michael Dudley, Andy Hoyle, Jimmy Hoyle, Donnie Hoyle, James Williamson, Wayne Grissom, Furnie Lawson Jr. and Charles Ayscue.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Gillburg United Methodist Church, 4939 N.C. 39 South, Henderson, N.C. 27537.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Roy G. Clay
PETERSBURG, Va. -- Roy Gresham Clay of Sutherland, Va., died Tuesday, January 1, 2002. He was the widower of Eula Mae Brooks Clay and Pauline Brooks Clay.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy C. Hines of Henderson, N.C.; a son, Dr. Roy G. Clay Jr. of West Monroe, La.; grandsons James Christopher Hines and his wife, Vickie, of Durham, N.C., Roy G. Clay III and his wife, Sacha, of New Orleans, La., J. Eugene Clay and his wife, Agnes, of Tempe, Ariz., and Robert E. Clay of Tempe, Ariz.; great-grandchildren Megan, Tatiana, Zachery, Alexander, Anne and Joy Clay, Allison and Samantha Hines; and a sister, Mildred Green of Sutherland.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, January 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Southlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Central Baptist Church, 6405 Courthouse Road, Church Road, Va.
Willie Richardson
HENDERSON -- Willie “Rabbit” Richardson, 73, of 539 High St. died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Born in Vidalia, Ga., he was the son of the late Lillie Mae Richardson. He attended the Vidalia public schools and joined the U.S. Navy in 1946.
He worked for J.P. Taylor Tobacco Co. and retired as a supervisor after 30 years.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew United Church of Christ by the Rev. C. Jermone Taylor. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Marable Richardson; three daughters, Glinder R. Hawkins, Wanda Joyce Richardson and Bonita R. Hawkins, all of Henderson; three sons, Larry Richardson, Kirk Veron Richardson and Willie Andrew Richardson, all of Henderson; one sister, Louise W. Bullock of Detroit; one brother, Willie Maurice Webster of Longwood; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the residence at 539 High St. The body will be on view until taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
Emma Lee Champion
CREEDMOOR -- Emma Lee Champion, 62, a resident of 709 Pine St., peacefully left this earth on January 3, 2002, at Durham Regional Hospital.
She was a native of Tennessee but resided most of her life in North Carolina. She was a retired state employee and a wonderful wife, mama and grandma. She was the daughter of the late Israel and Nellie Sellers Spurling.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Dan Hill. Burial will be in Creedmoor cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Stuart Champion of the home; two daughters, Janice C. Self and husband Johnny of Oxford and Ann Champion of Butner; a sister, Martha Webb and husband Beaumont of Smithfield, Va.; three grandchildren, Brandy, Hoyt and Nolan Self of Oxford; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.
Willie Davis
WARRENTON -- Willie Davis, 89, of Greensboro, formerly of Warrenton, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, in Britthaven Nursing Center of Greensboro.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Davis of Greensboro; three sisters, Gertrude Mayfield of Henderson, Helen Harris of Warrenton and Mittie Williams of Queens, N.Y.; an adopted sister, Mittie Burchette of Warrenton; one brother, Joe Davis of Baltimore; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Greenwood Baptist Church, under direction of the Rev. Eddie Lawrence. Burial will follow in Siler City.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Arrangements are by Farrar Funeral Services of Siler City and Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.
Larry Hargrove
Services for Larry Hargrove, 47, of 1017 U.S. 158, Rougemont, have been postponed to 1 p.m. Sunday. Services will be at the Garnes Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Elizabeth Brame and the Rev. Opie Terrell. Burial will be in the Nutbush Baptist Church cemetery.
Rachel E.B. Jefferys
KITTRELL -- Rachel E. Baker Jefferys, 70, of 1780 S. Lynnbank Road died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Oxford Manor Nursing Center. She was the widow of Joseph Jefferys.
She was born July 18, 1931, to the late Fred and Willie Neal Baker in Wake County. She was baptized at Olive Branch Baptist Church at an early age. Later, she and her husband joined Holy Temple United Holy Church in Henderson.
She was a professional educator, retiring from the Vance school system after more than 38 years in education.
Survivors include two sisters, Christine Congo of Philadelphia and Arthur Jean Smith of Fayetteville; and one brother, John Jones of Wake Forest.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Friendship Chapel Baptist Church of Wake Forest. Burial will follow in the Pine Forest Memorial Gardens of Wake Forest. Pall and floral bearers will be the DuBois High School Alumni Association.
The family will receive friends at the home of John and Carolyn Jones, 4030 Jonesville Road, Wake Forest. Flowers would be appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Angel Allison Johnson
OXFORD -- Angel Allison Johnson, 5-month-old daughter of Cynthia Goss and Joseph Johnson, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Duke University Medical Center.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are maternal grandparents Carolyn and Earl Messer of Oxford and Johnny and Sandy Goss of Creedmoor; maternal great-grandparents Mick and Leora James Goss of Creedmoor and Edith Averett of Butner; paternal grandparents Bertha and James Johnson of California; and paternal great-grandparents Geraldine and Frankie Overton of Creedmoor, Jesse and Brenda Thigpen of Stem, and Ruth and Richard Jenkins of Butner.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Chapel by the Rev. Eddie Mauldin. Burial will follow in South Granville Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Carolyn and Earl Messer, 1013 U.S. 158 West in Rougemont.
Stephen Reavis
ZEBULON -- Stephen T. Reavis, 75, of 8717 J.A. Farm Road died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2001.
Mr. Reavis was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; his stepmother, Elizabeth “Bootsie” Reavis of Henderson; children Margaret R. Brantley of Middlesex, Brenda R. Le of Wendell and Ray Reavis of Kingman, Ariz.; and siblings Doris Bray of Alexandria, Va., Lewis Reavis of Franklinton, Richard Reavis of Aldie, Va., Peggy Winstead of Tampa, Fla., Jane Mitchell of Alexandria, Va., Frankie Gourley of Franklinton, Shirley Stevenson of Collinsville, Va., Wayne Reavis of Henderson, Charles Reavis of Henderson, Linda Bagbey of Henderson, Edith Bagbey of Henderson and Jimmy Reavis of Warrenton.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Massey Funeral Home Chapel of Zebulon, with burial in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive visitors beginning at noon Saturday at the funeral home.
Corey Baker
WARRENTON -- Corey Baker, 18, of Patterson, N.J., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, in Orangeburg, S.C.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Spring Green Baptist Church. The Rev. Dennis G. Lindsay, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his mother, Vivian Baker of Norcross, Ga.; his father, Earnest Baker of Patterson, N.J.; one sister, Yolanda C. Baker of Norcross, Ga.; one brother, Earnest M. Baker of Patterson, N.J.

James Scott Brown
HENDERSON -- James Scott Brown, age 54, a resident of 178 Willow Oak Drive, died Thursday.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Joshua Scott and Doris Jackson Brown of Middleburg. He was a member of the Gospel Baptist Church where he was a Trustee and served as an Assistant Sunday School Teacher, and was a member of the Kerr Lake Home Builders Association, and a member of the National Guard Reserve. He was owner and operator of Jim’s Painting Service and co-owner of Vance Brides and Formals.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Gospel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Greene, Jr. and the Rev. Edward Yancey. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Jamie P. Brown of the home; one stepdaughter, Leslie P. Dixon and husband J. Dalton Dixon of Henderson; one step-son, Ronald E. Pittman, Jr. of Henderson; one sister, Elaine B. Jennings of Wake Forest; one brother, Tom Brown of Marietta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Ashleigh Dixon and Brooke Dixon.
The family will receive friends Friday at the home at 178 Willow Oak Street.
Serving as active pall bearers will be John Tucker, Matt Comer, Eddie Jackson, Murphy Comer, Dan Herion, and Joe Tippett.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all deacons and trustees of Gospel Baptist Church.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Gospel Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Jerry Matthews, 3403 Cameron Drive, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.
