John Kenneth Canupp
John Kenneth Canupp, 71, of Advance died on October 17 at his home. He had battled with pancreatic cancer for 18 months. He was born on December 24, 1933, to Lee Roy Canupp Sr. and Mary Linker Canupp in Concord. He became a Christian at age 16 and, for the remainder of his life, followed biblical teachings of serving God through service to his fellow man. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1986 as Regional Director of the North Central Region of the N.C. Dept. of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services and continued his service to those with mental illness by returning to the Forsyth/Stokes Area Mental Health Authority, where he served as a caseworker for nine additional years. While serving in this capacity, he, along with other concerned citizens, founded the Bethesda Center for the Homeless in Winston-Salem. He continued working at the Bethesda Center until August 2004, when he retired because of his illness. Among other acknowledgments that hereceived because of his services to and advocacy for those less fortunate were the Order of the Longleaf Pine, from the N.C. State Government presented upon his retirement and a plaque from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Council honoring him for “a lifetime of service to God’s disenfranchised children.” He was currently an active member of Ardmore Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, sang in the adult choir and organized and participated in a number of disaster relief and recovery mission trips. He also participated in mission trips to several locations outside of the United States, including Brazil, Puerto Rico and North Africa. He had previously been active at the Lewisville Baptist Church, where he served for many years as a part-time choir director. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of N.C., had served as Master of West Bend Lodge No. 434 at Lewisville and, in 1979, helped to organize and served as first Master of the Clemmons Masonic Lodge No. 755. He served the Grand Lodge of N.C. as District Deputy Grand Master from 1981 to 1983 and as Grand Chaplain in 1984. He was also a member of the Winston-Salem Scottish Rite Bodies of Freemasonry. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bobby Gene Canupp and Fred Arnold Canupp; his father-in-law, Robert M. Grant Sr.; and brother-in-law, Robert Thompson.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Barbara Ann Grant Canupp; two sons, Jon A. Canupp of Clemmons and Patrick W. Canupp and wife Paula M. Stathakis of Charlotte; a daughter, Susan E. Canupp Johnson and husband Timothy of Clemmons; a grandson, Andrew Carroll Johnson of Clemmons; two brothers, Lee Roy Canupp Jr. of Lakeland, Fla., and James Canupp and wife Lisa of Concord; two sisters, Phyllis Barbee and husband Clarence and Marie Thompson of Concord; a sister-in-law, Frances Canupp of Concord; his mother-in-law, Minnie P. Grant of Taylorsville; brother-in-law,Robert M. Grant Jr. of Hickory; an aunt, Kate Parker of Goldsboro; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
Clinton Wayne Hood
Clinton “Clint” Wayne Hood, 22, died October 16 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born August 14, 1983, in Cheraw, S.C. He loved cars, motorcycles, sports and woodworking. He was preceded in death by Morris and Betty Hood, A.V. Lang and Jay Driggers.
Surviving are his parents, Scott and Nancy Lang of Lewisville; two brothers, Dereck L. Hood of Pfafftown and Scott Lang Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; two grandmothers, Mrs. A.V. Lang and Christine Driggers; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and several special friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor William Pryor officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Marie Plunkett Dority
Marie Plunkett Dority, 73, of Winston-Salem died October 16 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County to the late Henry Coy Plunkett and Carrie Burcham Plunkett. She was of the Baptist faith and retired from Cloverdale Kitchen.
Surviving are her husband, Daniel Dority of the home; a daughter, Donna Gail Shaw and husband Jan of Winston-Salem; two sons, Richard Allen Teague and wife Wilma of Clemmons and Timmy Gray Teague and wife Laurie of Advance; two brothers, Robert Dean Plunkett of Winston-Salem and Jackie Ray Plunkett of Arizona; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Sid Jones officiating.
Sharon Weatherford Whiteman
Sharon Weatherford Whiteman, 56, of Winston-Salem died October 17 after a battle with cancer. She was born February 2, 1949, to the late James D. and Barbara Weatherford. She was employed at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.
Surviving are two sons, Brian Whiteman and companion Kimberly Robertson of Lewisville and Charles Whiteman of the home; two daughters, Kimberly Whiteman and Karen Teran, both of the home; two brothers, Danny Weatherford and wife Melinda of East Bend and Terry Weatherford and wife Gail of Huntersville; two nieces, Amelia Stansberry and husband Ben and Rachael Weatherford, all of East Bend; and her extended family, her co-workers at the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.
Glenn William Spaugh
Glenn William Spaugh, 56, of Clemmons died October 19 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 1, 1948, in Forsyth County to Ralph William and Viola Doty Spaugh. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 38 years of service. He was a member of Griffith Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the ushers.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Carol B. Spaugh of the home; a son, Christopher W. Spaugh and wife Kelli of Clemmons; two grandsons, Zachary William Spaugh and Austin McClelland Spaugh; a sister, Judy Spaugh Griffin and husband Eddie of Clemmons; a sister-in-law, Irene Cheek and husband Bob of Clemmons; brothers-in-law Clyde Bovender and wife Opal of Clemmons, Chester Bovender and wife Frances of Winston-Salem, Leroy Bovender and wife Shirley of Winston-Salem and Carl Bovender and wife Sandra of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Frances Nixon Bovender of Winston-Salem; two aunts, Ethel Spaugh of Winston-Salem and Doris Spaugh of Tobaccoville; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Ben and Lois Horton, Eric Horton, April and James Shermer and Ethan, Cole and Troy Shermer, all of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Griffith Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Brown and Rev. Mark Blair officiating. Burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Modell Orrell Munday
Modell Orrell Munday, 91, formerly of Advance, died October 16 at Autumn Care of Mocksville. She was born December 15, 1913, in Davie County to the late Lee Brown and Nannie Beauchamp Orrell. She was a homemaker and a member of Mocks United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Munday, in 1987; a son, Billy Munday, in August 2002; a granddaughter, Tammy Munday, in January 2005; three sisters; and four brothers.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Brooks and husband Butch of Lexington; a son, Kenneth Munday and wife Lockie Crowder of Lexington; two sisters, Kirby Lee Price of Greensboro and Aldine Daniel of Cooleemee; a brother, Herman Orrell of Clemmons; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bob Symanski officiating. Burial followed in Mocks United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Iris Martin Harp
Iris Martin Harp, 73, died October 18 at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit in Winston-Salem. She was born in Forsyth County on February 20, 1932, to Clyde and Hessie Inscore Martin. She was of the Baptist faith. She spent her life helping and caring for others at area nursing homes as well as in their personal homes. She loved to work in her flower gardens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hartman; and her twin sister, Francis Tutterow.
Surviving are two sons, William Rominger and wife Kim of Clemmons and S.W. “Inky” Rominger of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Lance Rominger and wife Cristy of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Elva Poss of Winston-Salem and Ann Cunnigham of Wallburg; a special friend, Becky Beasley of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Bill Chatman officiating.
William Dale Reece
William Dale Reece, 89, of Winston-Salem died October 17 at Springwood Care. He was born November 9, 1915, in Yadkin County to the late William and Geneva Reece Reece. He was a lifetime member of South Fork Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel B. Reece; a daughter, Patricia Reece Lowder; four sisters; and a brother.
Surviving are his son, Ralph Dale Reece and wife Peggy of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Mark Reece and wife Cindy of Lewisville, Dawn Dutton and husband Gary of Pfafftown, Dale Lowder and wife Robin of Pfafftown and Dana Armentor and husband Glenn of Lafayette, La.; five great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Reece, Adam Dutton, Chrissy Bryan and husband Travis, Autumn Breaux and Dustin Breaux; two great-great-grandchildren, Madison Bryan and Hannah Bryan; and two special friends, Larry and Kay Chunn.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Dr. Jerry Laughter officiating.
Verdell Phillip Michaux
Verdell Phillip Michaux of Clemmons died October 19 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness.
Surviving are his wife of the home, Mary S. Michaux; a son, Verdell Michaux and wife Greta of Greensboro; two daughters, Wanda Michaux of Atlanta, Ga., and Julia Gilmore and husband Tommie of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers; three sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Pastor Donald Jenkins officiating. Burial followed in Dulatown Cemetery, Lenoir.
Ella Cornelius Long
Ella Cornelius Long, 103, of Winston-Salem died October 20 at Clemmons Village No. 2. She was born October 20, 1902, in Yadkin County, a daughter of Lee Cornelius and Sophronia Lakey Cornelius. She was the oldest member of Beck’s Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Long Sr.; and a daughter, Kay Long Jordan.
Surviving are her son, C.T. Long Jr. and wife Brona of Winston-Salem; grandsons Lee Hall and wife Beth, T. Brentt Long and wife Martha, C. Kentt Long, Jon Hall and wife Sharon and Todd Hall; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Oren Columbus Tucker
Oren Columbus Tucker, 82, of Pilot Mountain died October 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 1, 1923, in Stokes County to the late Jasper Clemmons Tucker and Agnes Sisk Tucker. He was a veteran, having served in World War II. He was a retired farmer and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Tucker; and brothers Jasper C. Tucker Jr., Clyde Tucker, Clifton Tucker and Louis Tucker.
Surviving are his wife, Bertie Cagle Tucker of the home; his daughters, Cathy Brown and husband Earl of Mocksville, and Karen Price and husband John of Charlotte; a son, Oren Tucker Jr. and wife Gina of Lewisville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sisters Ephegene Mabe of Danbury, and Nancy L. Tucker of Pilot Mountain.
A graveside service was held at Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Comer officiating.
Betty Jackson Yow
Betty Jackson Yow, 75, of Lewisville died October 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 7, 1930, in Forsyth County to Eugene Franklin and Maude Ziglar Jackson. She was a member of Sharon United Methodist Church. She retired from Gravely International with 27 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Bill Jackson.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Howard Odell Yow of the home; two daughters, Pam Atkins and husband Bobby of East Bend and Lisa Shirley of Lexington; four grandchildren, Jason and Ashley Atkins and Christopher and Ellen Shirley; a sister, Doris Clark and husband Marshall of Pinnacle; three brothers, Jack Jackson and wife Lou of Clemmons, Bernie Jackson and wife Pat of Pfafftown and Ted Jackson and wife Linda of Rural Hall; four sisters-in-law, Mary Conrad of Winston-Salem, Virginia Smith of Lewisville, Barbara Grubbs of Walkertown and Marie Jackson of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Sharon United Methodist Church with Rev. David Lookadoo and Rev. Arthur Livengood officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Grace B. Walls
Grace B. Walls, 84, of Pfafftown died October 18 in New Braunfels, Texas. She was a member of Pfafftown Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alger C. Walls; mother, Maggie Osborne; father, Charles Bauguess; and sister, Gladys Flowers.
Surviving are her daughter, Sylvia Craven; her four brothers, Brady, Brandon, R.C. and Reece Osborne; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services at Vogler’s Reynolda Chapel. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Jimmy N. Wall
Jimmy N. Wall, 59, of Winston-Salem died October 23. He was born June 20, 1946, in Forsyth County to the late Robert Nelson and Betty Smith Wall.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra Wall of the home; daughter Stacey Spainhour and husband Ricky of Lewisville; son David Wall and wife Amanda of Charlotte; and five grandchildren, Danielle Whitlow, Christopher Wall, Madison Wall, Tierra Spainhour and Tiegan Spainhour.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Bill Chatman officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Carl Junior Tilley
Carl Junior Tilley, 74, of Mayodan died October 19 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Stokes County on February 3, 1931, to the late Huffy Sanford and Delila Lawson Tilley. He was a truck driver his entire adult life and retired from East Coast Leasing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Grubbs Tilley, in 1996; and a brother, Zane Tilley.
Surviving are a daughter, Nelda Merritt,and husband Mike of Blaine, Tenn.; a son, Junior Ray Tilley and wife Debbie of Mayodan; two stepdaughters, Deborah Henderson and husband Gary of Lewisville and Brenda Nichols of Walkertown; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Arms of Mayodan; two brothers, Elmer Tilley of Lawsonville and Brady Tilley of Sandy Ridge; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Rev. Doug Byrd officiating.

Nancy Holder Snow
Nancy “Nannie” Holder Snow, 95, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Lowgap, widow of Willie Rayburn Snow, died October 23 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born October 6, 1910, in Surry County, daughter of the late Kirby Holder and Lockie Lawson Holder. In addition to her parents and husband, She was preceded in death by a sister, Gracie Callaway.
Surviving are a daughter, Glenda Corriher of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Debbie Amos and husband Wayne of Winston-Salem and Kim Scott and husband Andy of Clemmons; and five great-grandchildren, Cali Amos and Scott Amos, both of Winston-Salem, and Andrew Scott, William Scott and Jackson Scott, all of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with Rev. Wallace Stone officiating. Burial followed in Ivy Green Baptist Church Cemetery.
Alma May Perry
Alma May Perry, 100, of East Bend died October 22 at Yadkin Nursing Care Center. She was born on May 3, 1905, in Yadkin County to William Henry and Dora Angel Perry. She taught school for 40 years in Yadkin, Surry and Stokes counties. After she retired from teaching, she and her sister, Marjorie, made many beautiful quilts and quilted for others. She was a member of Prospect Methodist Church and took an active part as long as her health permitted. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mamie Wilhelm.
Surviving are two nieces, Lou Ray Etchison and husband Gray of Clemmons and Nell Dinkins and husband Athalee of East Bend; a nephew, Jimmy Wilhelm and wife Florence of Kernersville; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend with Rev. David Miner officiating. Burial followed in Prospect Methodist Church Cemetery.
Reginald Remir Smoot
Minister Reginald Remir Smoot, 55, of Pfafftown died October 18 after an extended period of illness. He was born June 10, 1950, to Holloway and Janie Caldwell Smoot. He was a retired employee from the City of Winston-Salem Engineering Department after 30 years of service. He was a faithful member and associate minister at Spencer Memorial Christian Church. His was preceded in death by his mother.
Surviving are his wife of 35 years, LaVerne Wallace Smoot of the home; two daughters, LaTonya Smoot and Cecily Smoot; three grandsons, Denard, Christopher and Bryan Smoot; his father, Holloway Smoot; two sisters, Robbie Wilkins and husband Roy and Renae Davis and husband Jeff; three brothers, Dwight Smoot and wife Myra, Fredrick Smoot and wife Dehavia and Robert Smoot; a mother-in-law, Jennie Wallace; two sisters-in-law, Beverly Wallace and husband Bernard and Barbara Salley and husband Daniel; two brothers-in-law, Ronald Wallace and Donald Wallace and wife Alice; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church with Apostle Garland A. Wallace Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
Karla Deanna Myers
Karla Deanna Myers, 34, of Palm Desert, Ca., died February 2 in Rancho Mirage, Ca. She was born May 17, 1971 to Bob G. and Shirley Jones Myers in Winston-Salem.She was a graduate of West Forsyth High School and UNC-Chapel Hill. She received her master’s from East Carolina University in Greenville.She was a medical physicist at Harvard University for five years, St. Vincent’s Hospital for two years and most recently at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the Desert for three years. She was a member of the Junior League of Palm Springs Desert Communities, Mensa and the University of North Carolina Alumnae Association.
Surviving are her mother, Shirley Jones Myers of Clemmons; her grandmother, Evelyn H. Jones of Mount Airy; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
A memorial service was held at Ramon Chapel, Forest Lawn in Cathedral City, Ca. The family suggests that donations be made to the American Heart Association and Clemmons United Methodist Church.
Ruby Spears Livingston Alexander
Ruby Spears Livingston Alexander, 81, of Clemmons, died February 6 in Winston-Salem Rehabilitation Center. She was born in West Virginia on March 19, 1924. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Israel Livingston.
Surviving are her husband, Ray Alexander of the home; son Bill Livingston of Lexington; daughter Jeanette Heitman and husband Rodney of Lexington; stepson Ronnie Alexander and wife Gloria of Easley, S.C.; stepdaughter Janice Boone and husband Joe of Clemmons; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel with Rev. Hoyt Mason and Rev. Carl Sutton officiating. Burial followed in Mount Carmel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
