Curtis Ray Maupin
DURHAM -- Curtis Ray Maupin of Durham, N.C., 62, died Wednesday, November 7th, after a short illness. Born in Free Union, Va., Curtis grew to be like the Blue Ridge Mountains of his early upbringing. He lived his life with strength, sturdiness and dignity.
A dedicated salesman, Curtis spent more than 30 years with the BelkLeggett retail chain. In the early 1990s, Curtis fulfilled a lifelong dream by starting a real estate company. He was also very involved in the life of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, most recently chairing the Staff Parish Committee. Curtis maintained a simple life, traveling often and enjoying time with his family and friends.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Judy Williams Maupin of Durham; a brother, Randolph Maupin of Harrisonburg, Va.; three children, the Rev. Cindy McCalmont of Ames, Iowa, Dan Maupin of Salisbury, Md., Billy Maupin of New York, N.Y.; and three much beloved grandchildren, Ginny, Will and Becky.
Funeral services will be a celebration of his life, including visitation Saturday night 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and memorial service Sunday 3 p.m., both at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1320 Umstead Rd., Durham, N.C. There will also be a viewing Monday at 3 p.m. at Wesley Chapel, Free Union, Va., with a graveside service to follow at 4 p.m.

Faye H. Rackley
LITTLETON -- Faye Horton Rackley, 56, of 8 Windward Drive in Littleton died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at her residence. She was a native of Louisburg and the daughter of the late Mike Horton and Mae Wiggins Horton.
She was a member of Enterprise Baptist Church, member of the Lake Gaston Kiwanis Club and employed at BB&T in Warrenton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Enterprise Baptist Church in Littleton by the Rev. Jim Lamb. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Sonny Rackley; one son, Harvey Adams of Rocky Mount; one sister, Bell Garris of Edenton; three brothers, Mike Horton of Brasselton, Ga., Wayne Horton of Raleigh and Walter Horton of Edenton; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jack Leonard, Leonard Echols, Marc Jones, Pee Wee Council, Rolph Cobb and Hugh “Butch” Freeman.
Memorial donations may be given to Enterprise Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Enterprise Baptist Church.

John Richards
HENDERSON -- John “Big Gerald” Richards, 37, of 526 Hillside Place died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was a Vance County native and the son of Arthur and Betty Shearin Richards.
He was a gospel singer, songwriter and musician and the founder of Big Gerald and the Soul Seekers. He was known for playing in the surrounding area, funeral homes and churches.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at E.M. Rollins Elementary School by Elder Brenda Gale Peace. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice Nobles; three stepchildren, Dexter, Martha and James; his parents, Arthur and Betty Shearin Richards of Henderson; four sisters, Adrian Williams, Elder Brenda Gale Peace, Lillie Williams and Tonya Richards; and two brothers, Donald Richards and A.V. Richards.
The family will receive friends at 526 Hillside Place.
Pallbearers will be various gospel groups.

WARREN COUNTY -- Thomas Turner, 88, of Warren Hills Nursing Center, formerly of Macon, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.

James C. Watson
OXFORD -- James Clarence Watson, 58, of 4064 Dooster St. died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Granville Medical Center.
He was the son of the late Samuel Watson and Esther Thorpe Watson.
He was a former employee of Bandag Inc., retiring after 21 years of employment.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel Y. Watson; one son, Craig S. Watson of Oxford; one daughter, Jeanette R. Hawley of Oxford; two sisters, Marie W. Gray and Mary Ann W. Marable, both of Oxford; two brothers, the Rev. Samuel Watson of Oxford and John R. Watson of Washington, D.C.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted a 2 p.m. Monday at Betts & Son Funeral Chapel by the Rev. George Bullock. Burial will follow in the Mount Spring Church cemetery.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Betts & Son Funeral Home in Oxford.

Robert T. Wheeler Sr.
NORLINA -- Robert Thomas Wheeler Sr., 69, of Division Street died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Creedmoor and the son of the late Eugene Carl Wheeler and Lillie G. Wheeler.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Harvey, and a brother, Dr. William Carl Wheeler.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Oxford, a member of the American Legion, a U.S. Army veteran, and the retired manager of the A&P grocery store in Warrenton, where he worked for 42 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Rev. Ricky Easter. Burial will follow at Warren Dale cemetery in Norlina.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna Wheeler Anthony of Collinsville, Va.; a son, Robert Thomas “Tommy” Wheeler Jr. of Henderson; two sisters, Jean Wheeler Smith of Radford, Va., and Jacqueline Wheeler Sparks of Portsmouth, Va.; and three grandchildren.

HENDERSON -- Akia Ameer Wilform, infant son of Tahira Scales Wilform and Keshawn Shmar Wilform, died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are maternal grandparents Pamela Glover and Dwight Scales; a stepgrandfather, Michael Glover; paternal grandparents Donnell Williams and Timothy Wilform; a stepgrandfather, Sammy Williams; and a greatgrandmother, the Rev. Mary E. Reavis.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Brookston Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Mary E. Reavis.

William Brame Jr.
HENDERSON -- William Brame Jr., 35, of 806 Merriman St. died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at the LaSalle Nursing Facility in Durham. He was a Vance County native and the son of Willie Sr. and Elizabeth Yancey Brame.
He was educated in the Vance County school system.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Garnes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Elizabeth Brame. Interment will follow.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are one sister, Denise Lewis of Henderson, and three brothers, George Durham, Leon Brame of Henderson and Morris Brame of Durham.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at the home of Olar Mae Brame, 296 Spring Valley Road, Henderson.

Gladys H. Branch
HENDERSON -- Gladys Marie Hughes Branch, 84, of 607 Mason Street, Henderson, died Friday, November 9, 2001, in Rex Hospital in Raleigh.
Born in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Braxton and Lily Faulkner Hughes. She was the widow of William Clifton Branch.
Mrs. Branch was a retired employee of the State of North Carolina, where she was a Health Care Technician at John Umstead Hospital in Butner. She was a charter member of Harriett Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Harriett Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Leon Gupton. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a son, William C. Branch Jr., and wife Vivian, of Raleigh; two granddaughters, Catherine Suzanne Branch of Raleigh and Allison Cameron Branch of Durham; a grandson, William C. Branch III of Raleigh; two brothers, Hartwell F. “Bobby” Hughes, and wife Mae, and Clifton D. Hughes, all of Henderson; and three nieces, Brenda Williamson Tant of Henderson and Angie Hughes Brady and Bonnie Jo Hughes, both of Burlington.
The family will receive friends Sunday, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be William Weaver, William Weaver Jr., Lawrence Hilliard, Jake Roberson, Timmie Baynes and Roy Morton.

OXFORD -- Warren Earl Bullock, 78, of The Granville House died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001. He was a Robeson County native and the son of the late Claude Temple and Lena Abbott Bullock.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Dillion, S.C., and was retired from Dixiana Mills in Dillion.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Dillion by the Rev. William R. Cullum Jr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Perpetual cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Mildred Bullock; a daughter, Gail Hallman of Harrisburg, Pa.; a son, Ronnie E. Bullock of Oxford; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be held today at Cooper Funeral Home in Dillion.

NORLINA -- James Davis, 57, of Norlina died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.

CREEDMOOR -- George Lee Harris, 76, of U.S. 15 died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Carver Living Center in Durham. He was a native of Symth County, Va., the son of the late George W. and Bessie Tuell Harris.
He was a member of First Trinity Baptist Church in Durham and was a retired carpenter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Bob Dolinger. Burial will be in South Granville Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his daughter, Wanda H. Cox of Creedmoor; two sons, William Darrell Harris of Durham and George Wade Harris of Stem; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

Emily D. Jenks
HENDERSON -- Emily Davis Jenks, 81, formerly of Parker Street, Henderson, died Saturday, November 10, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
Born in Warren County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Weldon and Pearl Knight Davis. She was the widow of Elton David Jenks.
Mrs. Jenks was the retired owner and operator of Emily’s Beauty Shop. She was a member of North Henderson Baptist Church, where she was a former teacher of the Betty Davis Sunday School Class.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at North Henderson Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Cam Ford. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are two sons, Timothy A. Jenks, and wife Diane, of Henderson and C. David Jenks, and wife Mary Ola, of Greensboro; and three grandchildren, Tammy Jenks, Zack Jenks and Charles Jenks.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Tim and Diane Jenks, 1861 Ruin Creek Road, Henderson.

HENDERSON -- William Johnson Jr., 62, of 1000 Foster Road died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at his residence.

Janet Royster
OXFORD -- Janet Royster, 87, of 204 Delacroix St. died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at her residence. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Charlie G. and Katie Andrews Royster.
She was a graduate of Stovall High School and the University of North Carolina Women’s College in Greensboro. She worked at Centura Bank in Oxford for 37 years as a teller and public relations officer.
She was a charter member of Delrayno Baptist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir and trustee and in several other positions of the church. She was also a member of the Oxford Women’s Club.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Delrayno Baptist Church by the Rev. Hilton Moore Jr. Burial will follow in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving is one sister, Kathleen Royster Pruitt of Oxford.

Mattie B. Sherman
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A memorial service for Mattie Esther Brown Sherman, 77, was conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at Stewart Funeral Home Chapel in Washington, D.C., by the Rev. Howard Thompson. She was the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Brown and Mattie Esther Brown of the Hecks Grove community in Warren County.
She was a graduate of Palmer Memorial Institute, Sedalia, and attended West Virginia State University.
For 2 1/2 years, she and her family lived in Monrovia, Liberia, on the West African coast, where she aided her husband in his work by entertaining State Department families. Upon their return to Washington, she worked at Providence Hospital and later managed the TV service department at Howard University until retiring in 1985.
Preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Noah Sherman, she died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, after a lengthy illness.
Surviving are her three sons, Grover Sherman of Colorado, Geoffrey Sherman of Maryland and Gary Sherman of Washington, D.C.; and three brothers, Thurston T. Brown and Allen W. Brown, both of Warrenton, and the Rev. A.A. Brown of the Hecks Grove community.
Arrangements were by Stewart Funeral Home of Washington.
