Wilbert A. ‘Bill’ Edwards

OXFORD -- Wilbert Allen “Bill” Edwards of 1114 College St., Oxford, a former resident of 1540 E. Andrews Avenue, Henderson, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 31, 2001, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford. He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late Charles L. and Mary Briggs Edwards.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II as a fighter pilot in the 9th Air Force as part of the European air offensive in Normandy, northern France and the Rhineland.
During his military career, he received the Air Medal with 13 oak leaf clusters, EAMET Ribbon with four battle stars, American Theater Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Unit Citation Medal. He was a member of American Legion Post 60 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hill Cooper Post 2417, and was a retired bookkeeper for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where he worked for 44 years.
He was a lifelong member of the Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and member of the choir.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Tammy Ayscue and the Rev. Brad Jurkovich. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie Owen Edwards; two brothers, Ralph Plummer Edwards of Efland and Charles Ray Edwards of Milwaukee; and one sister, Mary Agnes E. Rowland of Henderson.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home in Oxford.
Serving as active pallbearers will be deacons of Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ: Sherwood Harp, James Pulley, Billy Stanton, Donald Coghill, Nash King, Nancy King Franklin, Delores Grissom, Herbie Grissom, T.T. Beckham, Marvin Hershman Jr. and Gail Pendergrass.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be George Gill, Harold Sherman, Marvin Boyd, Malcolm Pulley Sr., Glen Harris, Joe B. Hicks, John King Nelms, Hart Curl, McLendon Jackson, Jacob Lester, Gerald Stovall, Jill Pernell, Millard Grissom, Sonny Coghill, Billy Stanton, Kenny Beal, Winston Pruitt, Julius Fields and Willard Williams.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ, c/o Christy Pulley, 771 Edwards Road, Henderson, N.C. 27537.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Jonathon L. Foster

WARREN COUNTY -- Jonathon Lee Foster, 21, of Warren County died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ridgeway Baptist Church in Ridgeway. The Rev. W.T. Ramey III, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his parents, John Lee and Kathleen Hicks Foster of the home; one brother, Christopher L. Foster of the home; one sister, Destiny S. Foster of the home; and two grandmothers, Bennie Lee Hicks of the home and Mary Elizabeth Foster of Ridgeway.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Ernestine D. Hicks

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Ernestine Debnam Hicks, 70, of Brooklyn died at her residence. She was a native of Vance County and the daughter of Edgar Debnam and the late Bessie Davis Debnam.
She was educated in the Vance County public schools and was a member of St. James Baptist Church until she moved to Brooklyn.
She worked many years for Kent Street Cleaners.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church by the Rev. Joanne Allen. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Alfonzo Hicks; two daughters, Brenda Faye Short and Bessie Hicks, both of New York; her father, Edgar Debnam of Henderson; two brothers, James Debnam and Andrew Debnam, both of Henderson; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence of James Debnam, 111 Sarah Lane, off Old County Home Road.
The body will lie in state at the church one hour before the service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Ralph B. Hight Sr.

HENDERSON -- Ralph Benton Hight Sr., age 81, a resident of 1116 Hargrove Street, died Wednesday afternoon at Granville Medical Center in Oxford. He was a native of Vance County, the son of the late James Eppy and Cora Woodlief Hight, and was the widower of Jeannette Robertson Hight. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was a retired Vice President of the former Peoples Bank, now Centura Bank, where he worked for 45 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Men’s Bible Class. He was also a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Forty and Eight.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Cam Ford and Jack Richardson. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
He is survived by one daughter, Ellen H. Clapp and husband Don of Raleigh; two sons, Ralph Benton Hight Jr. and wife Mary Nell of Oxford and Wesley Lee Hight and wife Cathy of Henderson; three grandchildren, Mary Royall Hight, Wesley Lee Hight Jr. and Branson Perry Hight.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at his home on Hargrove Street.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Hank Reaves, Andy Clayton, Dalton Newman, Bob Lloyd, Henry W. Hight Jr., Mike Satterwhite, Billy C. Stanton, Tommy Tucker, Whit Sutton, W.C. Hight, William Cawthorne and James Bennett.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the N.C. Diabetes. Association, 2315-A Sunset Avenue, Rocky Mount, N.C. 27804, or the Cora W. Hight Fund, c/o the First United Methodist Church, 114 Church Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

William ‘Billy Boy’ Hunter

WARRENTON -- William “Billy Boy” Hunter, 76, of Chesapeake, Va., formerly of Warrenton, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at his home.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hunter; one daughter, Gladys Henson of Roseville, N.Y.; two sons, David Hunter of Roanoke, Va., and James Hunter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Coley Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Eddie Lawrence. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Baptist Church cemetery.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Service in Warrenton and Saturday until being taken to the church one hour before the funeral.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Service.

William J. Newman Jr.

HENDERSON -- William James “W.J.” Newman Jr., 70, of 324 Chavasse Ave., Henderson, died Thursday, November 1, 2001, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Born in Vance County, he was the son of the late William James Newman Sr. and Delia Daniel Newman.
Mr. Newman was the retired owner and operator of the former Newman’s Quick Stop.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jack C. Jenkins and the Rev. William M. “Bud” Budzinski. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Peoples Newman; one daughter, Barbara N. Allen and husband Ronnie of Henderson; one stepson, Larry E. Lloyd of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Nannie Mae N. Edmonds of Norlina; three brothers, Edward A. Newman of Newport News, Va., Raeford M. Newman of Clarksville, Va., and Raymond F. Newman of Kittrell; three grandchildren, Robbie Maddox Jr., LeAnn Allen and Ronnie Allen Jr.; two step-grandchildren, Charlie Lloyd and Christopher Lloyd; and three great-grandchildren, Kelsey Maddox, Meagan Maddox and Morgan Allen. He was preceded in death by a son, Tommy W. Newman.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be W.A. Peoples, Charlie Lloyd, Christopher Lloyd, Bruce Newman, Pete Newman and Ronnie Allen, Jr.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Samuel Macon Sr.
MIDDLEBURG -- Samuel Macon Sr., 91, of 255 N. Lee St., Middleburg, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Franklin County native and the son of the late Florence Macon and Samuel Jones.
He was a member of Rowland Chapel United Church of Christ, where he served as the superintendent of the Sunday school, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the usher board. He held the office of deacon for more than 50 years and was on the trustee board for more than 70 years, serving as assistant chairman. He also served as a member of the graveyard committee.
He was employed with Gas-tonia Concrete for 14 years and with Wyrenn-Wilson Construction for 23 years. He was self-employed in his hog business for more than 35 years and worked with the state Agriculture Department for 30 years.
He served on the Middleburg City Council for 10 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rowland Chapel United Church of Christ by Isaac Thomas. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, India Macon; one son, Samuel W. Macon of the home; five daughters, India Bullock of the home, Ruth Nance of Middleburg, Virginia Macon-Vance of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Jackson and Lena Henderson, both of Rahway, N.J.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, James Jones of Norlina; and three sisters, Earl Sample of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Lucy Allen and Elsie M. Green of Norlina.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Henry Gregory, Robert Gregory, Clyde Burwell, James Neal, Torrey Thomas and Ron Judkins.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

Colleen L. Oakley

STOVALL -- Colleen L. Oakley, 73, of 8019 Hart Cross Road died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at Granville Medical Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Graham and Viola Amos Lemons
She was a member of Stovall Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. George Custer. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five sons, Elbert “Spooky” Oakley and Jerry Oakley, both of Butner, Roger Oakley of Oxford, Jerry Teel of Bullock and Jesse Teel of Berea; two sisters, Hazel L. Lyons of Butner and Lillian L. Newton of Raleigh; two brothers, Frank Lemons of Butner and Clarence Lemons of Oxford; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Alton A. and Avin B. Teel.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Stovall Baptist Church, P.O. Box 188, Stovall, N.C. 27582.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Ulysses S. Puckett

STOVALL -- Ulysses S. Puckett, 90, of 102 Durham St. died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Lucius Green and Lena Garrett Puckett.
He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and member of Stovall Baptist Church, serving as deacon and organist.
He was owner and operator of Puckett Drug Store for more than 50 years, was a former mayor of Stovall and town commissioner, and served on the board of directors of Stovall Medical Center. He also was an artist and taught music at Stovall High School.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Stovall Memorial cemetery by the Rev. George Custer.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home in Oxford.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Stovall Baptist Church, P.O. Box 188, Stovall, N.C. 27582.

Bernice Royster

OXFORD -- Bernice Royster, 91, of 810 Goshen St. died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Blue Wing Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Justin I. Davis

HENDERSON -- Justin Isaiah Davis, infant son of Walter Davis III and Canecca Bolden Davis, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital.
A chapel service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service. Burial will be at Woodworth Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Destiny S. Davis and Brina S. Davis, both of the home; his maternal grandparents, Jewel Bolden of Henderson and James Jackson of Dothan, Ala.; his paternal grandparents, Walter Davis Jr. and Dorothy Davis, both of Henderson; a maternal great-grandfather, Eddie Bolden Sr. of Asheford, Ala.; and a paternal great-grandmother, Louise Davis of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the residence of Walter and Canecca Davis, 241 Foster Road.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Ovie A. Hicks

HENDERSON -- Ovie Ayscue Hicks, 87, of 560 Daniel-Harris Road died Saturday morning, Nov. 3, 2001, at the home of her daughter at 133 Ranes Drive. She was a native of Franklin County, the daughter of the late William Henry and Ida Carroll Ayscue, and was the widow of Lewis T. Hicks.
She was a member of the Cokesbury United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Cokesbury United Methodist
Church cemetery by the Rev. Michael E. Rocheleau.
She is survived by one daughter, Nellie H. Newton of Henderson; three sisters, Ida Bell Mustian, Gracie Abbott and Beatrice Thompson, all of Henderson; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie H. Newton.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Oscar ‘O.B.’ Alston
HENDERSON -- Oscar “O.B.” Alston, 63, of 168 Willow Creek Run, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Wilson County native.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday at Holy Temple Holy Church by Bishops Jesse Jones and Elroy Lewis. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are one brother, Rev. Roosevelt Alston, with whom he lived, and one sister, Jessie M. Braswell of Newark, N.J.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Robert M. Baker Jr.

HENDERSON -- Robert Mahlon Baker Jr., 55, of 5651 Crosswinds Court, St. Augustine, Fla., died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at his home. He was a native of Sanford, Fla., and the son of the late Robert M. Baker Sr. and Hester McGrady Baker.
He was a retired employee of Sun Microsystems Inc. He was a former member of the United States National Guard and was a member of Fleming Island United Methodist Church in Green Cove Springs, Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today a Fleming Island United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dawn Lawton. Local services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Flowers Funeral Chapel by Dr. Richard A. Walker. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Morgan Baker; three daughters, Tiffany Baker of the home, Lisa Baker of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Stephanie B. Williams of Allen, Texas; and a sister, Nettie B. Bunch of Orlando, Fla.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of his mother-in-law, Lucille Morgan, 545 Wakefield Ave., Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jim Bunch, Jamie Bunch, Bob Flowers, Jimmy Ayscue, Terry Allgood and Bill Dickerson.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice Foundation for Caring, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Inc., 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, Fla. 32257; or to Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 6299, Deltona, Fla. 32728.

MACON -- Queen Davis Branch, 40, of Macon, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
