WARRENTON -- Winfred Leo Turner, 78, of 120 Downtin St. died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Catawba County native and the son of the late John Luther Turner and Jenny Kaylor Turner.
He was a member of Warrenton Baptist Church in Warrenton and the Warrenton Lions Club, a World War II veteran, and a retired barber from the Sanitary Barber Shop in Warrenton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Davis Turner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Warrenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Lottie K. Turner; one daughter, Laura T. Keltie of Raleigh; one stepson, Tommy Harmon of Warrenton; one sister, Betty Pless of Conover; and one grandson.
Pallbearers will be Tom Watson, G.B. Hull, Bob Caudle, Monroe Gardner, Eddie Clayton, Pete Burroughs and Durwood Johnson.
Memorials may be made to the Warrenton Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Blaylock Funeral Home.

Willia D. Barr
WARRENTON -- Willia Davis Barr, 94, of Warrenton died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ in Manson by the Rev. John R. Pugh. Burial will follow in the Whites Grove Christian Church cemetery in Norlina.
Surviving are two daughters, Sarah B. Edwards of the Bronx, N.Y., and Rachel E. Barr of Newark, N.J.; two sons, Joe Barr Jr. of Baltimore and Eddie L. Barr of the Bronx; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.
Jarrett M. Odom
NORLINA -- Jarrett Michael Odom, 4, died Thursday, July 5, 2001, in Angier. He was a Wake County native and the son of Claude Wilson Odom and Janet Bender Odom.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his twin brother, Garrett Dean Odom; a half-brother, Ryan Phillip Odom; a paternal grandmother, Joyce Odom; and a maternal grandmother, Barbara Bender.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Ridgeway.

Floyd Alston
WARRENTON -- Floyd Alston, 76, of the Baltimore Road community in Warrenton died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fork Chapel Baptist Church in the Inez community in Warrenton by the Rev. Robert Talley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are nine children, Minister Jennie Taylor of Aurora, Colo., and Wilbert Alston, Debbie Alston, Ronnie Alston, Albert Alston, Mark Alston, Tyrone Alston, Michelle Alston and Troy Alston, all of Queens, N.Y.; 40 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Carrie Alston of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alice Davis and Clara Bell Williams, both of Warrenton, Rosa Mary Alston of Queens, and Emma Kearney of Washington, D.C.; and three brothers, Joe Alston of Louisburg, Frederick Alston of Boston and Abraham Alston of Alabama.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.

OXFORD -- Lula Brooks Barnes, 97, of Britthaven of Henderson, formerly of College Street in Oxford, died Thursday, July 12, 2001.

WILLIAMSTON, N.J. -- Ernestine B. Barr, 69, of Williamston died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in New Jersey.

SPRING HOPE -- Joseph Brooks, 60, of 308 N. Nash St. died Monday, July 9, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Spring Hope Funeral Home by the Rev. Carroll Wiggs and Dr. Donald G. Reams. Interment will follow in Spring Hope Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna Brooks of Momeyer; two sisters, Beula Davis of Castalia and Linda Pendergrass of Henderson; and three brothers, Donnie and Weidie Brooks, both of Henderson, and Roger Brooks of Castalia.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Spring Hope Funeral Home and other times at the home of Roger and Lula Brooks, 7190 Highway 58 North, Castalia.

Lula B. Gooch
CREEDMOOR -- Lula Bell Gooch, 80, of 108 Lyon St. died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. She was a Wake County native and the daughter of the late James and Mary Robinson Lyon.
She was employed by John Umstead Hospital before retiring. She was married to the late Ernest Gooch.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Union Chapel Baptist Church in Butner by the Rev. Harold Trice, pastor. Interment will be in Synama Grove Church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Ernestine G. Harris of Butner; one foster daughter, Louie Richardson of Hoboken, N.J.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Union Chapel Baptist Church and other times at the home of her daughter, 606 28th St. in Butner.

Vernell S. Jeffries
OXFORD -- Vernell Sizemore Jeffries, 75, of 805 Ellynn Drive, Cary, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Rex Nursing Center in Apex. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Young and Mary Yancey Sizemore.
She was a member of Grassy Creek Baptist Church and was a retired medical secretary.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grassy Creek Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Randy Carter.
Surviving are her husband, Ralph W. Jeffries; a daughter, Lori J. VanHall of Wake Forest; a son, Ralph W. Jeffries II of Cary; a sister, Jane S. Hughes of Buffalo Junction, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford.

Eva Pearson
HENDERSON -- Eva Maria Viola Adams Pearson, 52, died in Philadelphia on Sunday, July 8, 2001. She was a native of Henderson and the daughter of the late Raynah H. and Ethel Lancaster Adams.
At an early age, she joined the Cotton Memorial Presbyterian Church. After moving to Philadelphia, he affiliated with Cedar Park Presbyterian Church and later joined Salem Baptist Church in Jenkintown, Pa., where she was an active member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the TLC Group.
She attended Lelia B. Yancey Elementary School and Ingleside School in Crews, Va. She graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in Nottaway, Va. She received her bachelor’s degree in English from St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh in 1970. She pursued graduate studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
She taught English in the public schools of North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania and was a counselor in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. She served as director of special programs at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia and director of development at Lincoln University in Lincoln, Pa.
She was a member of St. Augustine’s College Alumni Association, the United Negro College Fund Interalumni Council, the Society of Seven, The TWGS Inc. Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Greater Philadelphia National Society of Fundraising Executives.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Adams family cemetery by the Rev. Albert Moses.
Surviving are one daughter, Ann Christina Pearson of the home, and two brothers, Raynah H. Adams III of Henderson and Paul Lancaster Adams Sr. of Richmond, Va.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service and other times at 1490 Norlina Road.

Lula B. Barnes
OXFORD -- Lula Brooks Barnes, 97, a resident of Britthaven of Henderson, and a former resident of College St. in Oxford, died Thursday, July 12, 2001. A native of Granville County, born November 8, 1903 to the late Urquhart James and Lizzie Julia Currin Brooks, and was the widow of Leroy Barnes. Mrs. Barnes was a member of Hester Baptist Church, a member of the Rebekah Sunday School Class, a choir member until health prevented participation, the church WMU and a member of the Granville County Home Demonstration Club for more than 50 years.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday from Hester Baptist Church by the Rev. Leslie Giles. Burial will follow in Hermon United Methodist Church cemetery in Vance County.
Surviving are her daughter, Margaret Barnes Wiggins of Henderson; her grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Dr. Thomas Barnes Wiggins and wife, Rachel Duggen Wiggins, of Winston-Salem, Roy Harrison Wiggins and wife, Tina Bailey Wiggins, of Charlotte; her great-grandsons, Walter Francis Wiggins and Douglas Jackson Wiggins; her great-granddaughter, Lauren Brooke Wiggins; her sister-in-law, Evelyn S. Brooks; her brother-in-law, Frank Huff. She was predeceased by two daughters, Mae Frances Barnes, age 13 days, Lizzie Julia Barnes, age 3.
Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Choir Fund of Hester Baptist Church, P.O. Box 964, Oxford, N.C. 27565.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and other times at the home of Margaret Barnes, 256 Crestwood Road, Henderson.
Ann B. Dickerson
OXFORD -- Ann Buchanan Dickerson, of 200A Mooreland Drive, died Friday, July 13, 2001. She was a native of Oxford and the daughter of the late James Thomas and Antoinette Daniel Buchanan.
She was a member of the Junior Woman’s Club.
Memorial services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Mark Powell.
The family will greet friends briefly following the services.
Surviving are her daughters, Pam Hastings of Raleigh, Lori Dickerson of Jordan Lake; her son, Grady G. Dickerson II of Lewisville; her sister, Mary Nell B. Newcomb of Oxford; four grandsons.

HENDERSON -- Shirley Jean Williams, 40, of 812 E. Andrews Ave., died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a native of Newark, N.J., and the daughter of Barbara Jean Tunstall Allen and the late John Norman Allen Jr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Higher Faith Deliverance Cathedral by the Revs. Eddie Wright and Harry L. Williams.
Surviving are her mother, Barbara Jean Allen of the home; four sisters, Helen D. Scott of Oxford, Tracey Glover, Robin Jones, and Brenda Harris, all of Henderson; one brother, Otha Allen of the home; her grandfather, John Norman Allen Sr. of Henderson.

WILLIAMSTOWN, N.J. -- Ernestine B. Barr, 69, of Williamstown, N.J., died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at her residence in New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Rev. R.D. Bullock Jr. and Verlena Bullock Powlis.
She was a graduate of the former Warren County Training School and also attended North Carolina Central University for two years.
She was an employee of the U.S. Navy Yard in Philadelphia, Pa., until her retirement in 1985.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Level United Church of Christ cemetery by the Rev. Leon White.
Surviving are her husband, Clifford Barr; one son, Kevin; two sisters, Malraye Bullock and Laquitta Bullock; three brothers, James Bullock, Fred Bullock and William Bullock.

OXFORD -- Richard Harris, 84, of E.E. Toney Rest Home, formerly of 116 Warren Ave., died Friday, July 13, 2001, at E.E. Toney Rest Home. He was a retired coalminer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Dock Fuller. Burial will be in Hawkins Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, William B. Harris of Franklinton; one stepson, Joseph Parker of Apex; one sister, Blanch H. Suitt of Creedmoor; three brothers, Lloyd Harris of Creedmoor, Hubert Lee Harris of Oxford, and Lenwood White of Wilkesbury, Pa.; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
The body will lie in state at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. The family will receive visitors at the home of Hubert and Emma Harris, 104 Starr Ave. in Oxford.

Georgia A.P. Hopkins
HENDERSON -- Georgia Ann Perry Hopkins, 94, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at Britthaven Center. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late James Perry and Polly Ann Burton.
She was educated in Vance County Schools and at an early age joined the Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church and later joined the Greater Ransom Way of the Cross Apostolic Temple where she was mother of the church, and member of the Missionary Choir and Missionary Circle.
She was married to the late Warren Hopkins.
Surviving are one daughter, Maxine Hopkins Williams; one son, Edmond Hopkins, both of Henderson; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Rhodes, Sally Allen and Zenobia Henderson, all of Henderson; and two brothers, Willie Perry of Henderson and James Perry of Fayetteville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Ransom Way Church by Bishop Johnny Alston, assisted by Elders Wilbert Williams, Arnold McCray and Michael Alston. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Floralbearers will be missionaries. Pallbearers will be nephews.
The family will receive friends at the church from 12 to 1 p.m. Wednesday and other times at 323 Chavasse Ave. The body will be at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.

Jarold B. Melvin Jr.
ROCKY MOUNT -- Jarold B. Melvin Jr., 73, died Saturday, July 14, 2001. He was a Nash County native and the son of the late Jarold B. Melvin Sr. and Annie Peacock Melvin.
He was a foreman with W.B. Lea and J.P. Taylor Tobacco Companies and a member of Southside Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and was a faithful servant. He was also in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Webb Melvin; children, Wendy H. Thrift of South Hill, Va., Vickie H. Fuller of Henderson, Debbie Strickland and Michelle Davis, both of Rocky Mount, and Donna Davis of Sharpsburg; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Jim Bullard of Rocky Mount and Donald Lee Melvin of Battleboro.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Southside Baptist Church by the Revs. Paul Gotthardt and Steve Webb. Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Pineview cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home, 1239 Allen St.
