Philip Emerson Pitt
Philip Emerson Pitt, 59, of Clemmons died suddenly on July 29 while playing volleyball in Ajijie, Mexico. He was born June 2, 1945, and was the son of the late Emerson Lester Pitt and Anna Marie Poling. He was a devoted father, a 25-year employee of State Electric/Ligon Electric and a graduate of Glenville State College. After retirement, he moved to Ajijie, Mexico, where he was the happiest in recent times. He enjoyed life to the fullest and wanted everyone else to do the same. He was preceded in death by his children, Stephanie Ann and Philip Emerson, and his wife, Janice Lee Faulkner Pitt.
Surviving are his son, Philip M. Pitt of Telluride, Colo.; his daughter, Christa Pitt Tracy and husband Stephen of Canastota, N.Y.; five sisters, Jean Mullen, Carol Oldaker, Mary Ingraham, Joan Bohl and Rececca Bosley; a brother, Michael Pitt; two sisters-in-law, Judie Faulkner and Kimberly Pasternak; and a brother-in-law, Donald Faulkner II.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Francis Xavier Church in Parkersburg, W. Va. An inurnment ceremony followed at Mount Carmel. A celebration of life was held at Michael’s Restaurant in Winston-Salem.
Grace Davis Vanhoy
Grace Davis Vanhoy, 88, of Walkertown died August 30 at her home. She was born March 11, 1916, a daughter of the late John Henry and Carrie Shores Davis. She was a member of Love’s United Methodist Church and the Will Hanes Sunday School Class. She was also the owner and operator of John’s Take Home of Walkertown for 11 years. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles K. Vanhoy.
Surviving are her husband of the home, Charles Plummer Vanhoy; a daughter, Loretta V. Angel of Winston-Salem; a son, Virgil Davis and wife Tamara of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Marta A. Lyon and husband Brad, Jeff P. Angel and April Davis, all of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Alexis and Sydney Angel; four sisters, Eula Smith of Winston-Salem, Lucille Blum of Rustburg, Va., Lorraine Sturgill of Sparta, and Betty Hampton of Walkertown; a brother, Earl Davis of Sparta; and a very special family friend, David Reeves of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Love’s United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Chip Webb officiating.
Ernest Theodore Meadows
Ernest Theodore Meadows, 79, of Winston-Salem died September 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 20, 1924, in Forsyth County to John and Cora Beamon Meadows. He retired from Tuttle Lumber Co. with 36 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Meadows of Kernersville.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Eva L. Meadows; two daughters, Donna Lowrey of Clemmons and Jean Mills of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Patrick Lowrey of Clemmons; a grandson, Scott Mills and wife Denise of Kernersville; three great-grandchildren, Adam, Ashleigh and Jessica Mills; two sisters, Thelma Meadows of Conover and Myrtle DeBusk and husband Lee of Winston-Salem; a brother, Rome Meadows of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Dahlia Meadows of Kernersville; a number of nieces and nephews; and a great amount of friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Bill Teague officiating. Burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Joyce Nichols Smith
Joyce Nichols Smith, 64, of Elkin died September 2 at her home. She was born May 28, 1940, in Surry County to Walter and Flora Hodges Nichols. She worked for 32 years for AT&T and 11 years with Lydall. She was a member of Mountain Park Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Nick Nichols; and two sisters, Rachel Walker and Beulah Prevette.
Surviving are her husband of 46 years, David Stone Smith of the home; a daughter, Lisa Whisenhunt and husband Doug of Elkin; a sister, Dorothy Mitchell of Clemmons; and two grandchildren, Hannah Smith and Dillon Whisenhunt, both of Elkin.
Funeral services were held at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Grady Trivette officiating. Burial followed at Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Sandra Harrison Griffith
Sandra Harrison Griffith, 51, of Winnabow died August 31 at her residence. She was born December 5, 1952, in Martinsville, Va., daughter of Bobby Harrison and the late Nellie Branscome Harrison and moved to Brunswick County in 1989. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie Harrison, and a sister, Brenda Thomas.
Surviving are her husband of six years, Victor Griffith of the home; a daughter, Melissa Dentiste and husband Brent of Clemmons; a stepdaughter, Kassie Griffith of Milwaukee, Wisc.; a brother, Ralph Harrison of Martinsville, Va.; her sisters, Linda Stanley of Mount Airy, Cathy Grogan of Virginia Beach, Va., Vicki Kohler of Winston-Salem and Arbutus Harrison of Eden; and her grandchildren, Brandon Dentiste and Nathan Dentiste.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mildred Doss Edwards
Mildred Doss Edwards, 60, of Clemmons, died September 2. She was born January 17, 1944, in Raleigh County, W.Va., to William Dolph Doss and Lola Terry Doss. She was retired from Burns Seat Co. She was a faithful member of Currytown Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Billy Ray Edwards, and a daughter, Lola Ferree Edwards, both of the home.
Funeral services were held at Currytown Baptist Church with Rev. Michael McDaniel officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Kelly Jean Hayes
Kelly Jean Hayes, 26, of Clemmons and her unborn child died unexpectedly September 3. She was born in Forsyth County on November 16, 1977, to Perry and Sandy Hayes. She attended Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church. She enjoyed riding motorcycles and NASCAR racing. She was an avid Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan. She especially loved taking care of the little ones in her family. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Faith Nicole, Hope Renee and Charity Deann Lewis, and her paternal grandparents, William and JoAnn Beauchamp of Clemmons.
Surviving are her fiance, Brian Lewis of the home; his children, Brian Jr., Taylor and Christian; her parents, Sandy Hayes and Bill Harpes of Advance and Perry and Beth Hayes of Lexington; her maternal grandparents, Gary and Betty Rice of Clemmons; a sister, Kim Hayes (Tony Lowe) of Clemmons; two brothers, Chris Hayes (Gwien Tufano) of Clemmons and Scooter Hayes (Spring Thorne) of Lexington; a very special aunt and uncle, Debbie and David Neal of Charlotte and their children, Cameron and Josh; a special cousin, Lanita Doub of Advance; several nieces and nephews, Gracen, Bubba and Shayna Gilbert, Billy Lowe, Seth Hayes and McKinley Hayes; and many other family and friends.
Funeral services were held at Vogler’s Funeral Home in Clemmons with Pastor Joel Boyles officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Cornelia Howard Bumgardner
Cornelia Howard Bumgardner, 89, of Yadkin Nursing Care Center, formerly of Winston-Salem,died September 1. She was born in Farmington on March 26, 1915. She was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Bumgardner; two brothers, Lonnie Howard of Portsmouth, Va., and Calvin Howard of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Virginia Owens of Maryland.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne Bumgardner and wife Linda of Lewisville and George Bumgardner of Colorado; a grandson, Mark Bumgardner of Lewisville; and a brother, Vernon Howard of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Tom Lee officiating.
Goldie Tutherow Huffstetler
Goldie Tutherow Huffstetler, 86, of Lewisville died September 6. She was born August 25, 1918, in Spartanburg, S.C., to Mark and Susie Ingram Tutherow. She was a retired concession manager for the state and was a member of Temple Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Romie Lee Huffstetler; two brothers, John and Delbert Tutherow; and a sister, Addie Dellinger.
Surviving are a son, B.L. Foster and wife Donna of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Margie Everhart of Lewisville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bud Owen officiating, and burial followed at Woodland Cemetery.
Ophelia J. Wright
Ophelia J. Wright, 93, of Pfafftown died September 1 at her home with her nephew, James D. Mather II and wife, Shirley. She was born January 15, 1911, in Fernandina Beach, Fla., to Theodore and Lizzie Johnson. She was a Jehovah’s Witness, having been baptized more than 30 years ago. Before moving to North Carolina in February of this year, she had lived in Manatee County on the West Coast of Florida since 1936. She was a pioneer in improving health care for blacks in Manatee County, arriving as a registered nurse and licensed midwife after graduating from Brewster Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. She was recruited for Bradenton by the nursing director who had overseen her training to run the small annex that Manatee County Hospital operated for black patients. Other young nurses had accepted the task, but fled almost immediately. It was a time when segregation was the rule and medical services for African-Americans were scarce. She was asked to stay for at least three months. For the next three decades, she not only remained in the county, but helped shape the way that health care was delivered to its black community, both at the hospital and as a public-health nurse. As a midwife, she delivered more than 500 babies before retiring in 1965. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, George S. Wright; two brothers, James Johnson and Theodore Johnson Jr.; two sisters, Theodosia Stays and Sara Charlton.
Surviving are a sister, Gussie Dove of Lompoc, Calif.; five nephews, James Mather of North Carolina, James Stays of Maryland, Horace Dove Jr. of Louisiana, Donald Dove of California and Theodore Johnson III of Miami; eight nieces, Ophelia Dove of California, Dorothy Davis of California, Maggie Hazel of New York, Sheryl Agarrat of Miami, Lenora Brown of Atlanta, Paulette Johnson of Miami, Olive Johnson of Tennessee, Kay Johnson of the Bahamas; and a host of grand nieces, grand nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in Fernandina Beach, Fla.
Martha C. Binkley
Martha C. Binkley, 77, of Winston-Salem died October 30. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Clemmons and loved many radio ministries. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Clifton Binkley; her parents; two brothers; and a sister.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Jones of the home; two sons, Stanley Binkley and wife Mabel of Winston-Salem and John Binkley of the home; four grandsons, Steve, Chris, John David Binkley and Tim Jones; two nephews, Darrell and Bruce Thomas of Clemmons; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at Immanuel Baptist Church.
Hiram Thomas Willard
Hiram Thomas Willard, 78, of Winston-Salem died October 27 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on August 29, 1926, in Yadkin County to Roscoe Apolon Willard and Texie Ann Willard. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from the U.S. Post Office as a letter carrier. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Angel Willard.
Surviving are a daughter, Melissa Willard Clinard of Clemmons; a son, Jason Thomas Willard of the home; two sisters, Maxine Johnson of Yadkinville and Almeta Idol of Kernersville; and a brother, Lloyd Willard of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Old Town Baptist Church with Pastor Rickey D. Speas officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Gloria Ada Aquino
Gloria Ada Aquino, 78, of Pfafftown died October 30. She was born May 10, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Ada and Manuel Wood Sr. and was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church. She worked as a head cashier for the A&P grocery stores for 30 years and was a teacher’s aide at Hopewell (Pennsylvania) Elementary School for 10 years before moving to Winston-Salem to be near her four grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J. Aquino; a grandson, Joseph W. McClure; a sister, Ethel Horlick; and a brother, Manuel Wood Jr.
Surviving are her daughter, Eileen McClure and husband Lowell of Pfafftown; her grandsons, Paul McClure and wife Heather of Charlotte, Gregory McClure and wife Tonia of San Diego, CA and Thomas McClure of Winston-Salem; a sister, Edna Thompson of Knoxville, TN; a brother, Philip Wood and wife Becky of Live Oak, FL; a brother-in-law, Jack Horlick of Muskogee, OK; a sister-in-law, Pat Wood of Sparks, NV; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Reynolda Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jim Glasgow officiating.
Bradley Scott Wilson
Bradley Scott Wilson, 22, of Lexington died October 29. He was born March 27, 1982, in Forsyth County to Keith Graves Wilson and Kelly Maxwell Wilson. He was a supervisor with Atrium Doors & Windows. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Bob Clinger; and grandfather, Michael A. Maxwell Sr.
Surviving are his wife, Brooke Clinger Wilson of the home; a son, Peyton Wilson; a daughter, Madison Wilson; his father, Keith Graves Wilson of Advance; his mother, Kelly Maxwell Wilson Carter of Lexington; a sister, Mikki Wilson of Lexington; paternal grandparents, Jerry and Mary Wilson of Winston-Salem; maternal grandparents, Shirley and Charles Richardson of Clemmons; a great-grandfather, Paul Miller of Winston-Salem; a great-grandmother, Marietta Stover of Hendersonville; and best friend and cousin, Nick Maxwell.
A memorial service was held at Center United Methodist Church with Jamie Fountain officiating.
Donald William Alexander
Donald William Alexander, 73, of Roaring Gap died October 29. Born in Wilkes County, he was the son of Snow and Texie Alexander of Roaring River. He owned Colonial Real Estate Co., which operated in Winston-Salem until 1974 when he moved his residence and business to Roaring Gap full time, to facilitate his love for the mountains. He was a licensed real-estate broker and general contractor and a past president of the Winston-Salem Homebuilders Association. He was the third president of High Meadows Country Club and provided real-estate services to the High Meadows community for more than 35 years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. He was preceded in death by hiw brother, Harold.
Surviving are three children, Donna Alexander of Lewisville, Bruce Alexander and wife Lori of Asheville and Tim Alexander and wife Rebecca of Asheville; his brother, Keith Alexander and wife Jewel of Roaring Gap; his sister-in-law, Louise, of Bear, DE.; and four grandchildren, Julia, Annie, Jonathan and Daniel.
A memorial service was held at High Meadows Country Club.
Cleo Myers Woodle
Cleo Myers Woodle, 79, of Pfafftown died October 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born February 23, 1925, in Wilkes County, a daughter of the late John Clinton Myers and the late Dorothy Money Myers. She was a former bookkeeper with Zabo Foods and was a member of Woodland Baptist Church for more than 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Garfield Woodle in 1993.
Surviving are her daughter, Loraine Woodle of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Teresa Meredith of Rural Hall and Toni Brooks of Rock Hill, SC; two grandsons, Josh Meredith and Travis Brooks and wife Gena; and two great-grandsons, Seth Brooks and Isaac Brooks.
Funeral services were held at Woodland Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Gammons officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Lonnie Marshall McGuire
Lonnie Marshall McGuire, 80, of Winston-Salem died October 30 at his home. Born in Caldwell, W.Va., on October 5, 1924, he was the son of the late Lonnie E. and Lydia McGuire. He was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy. He loved playing golf, watching his birds and enjoyed sports.
Surviving are a daughter, Jan McGuire Russell of Winston-Salem; a son, Ron McGuire of Lewisville; three grandchildren; and a brother, Robert F. McGuire of Lenexa, KS.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Bill Teague officiating. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Melvin H. Hutchens
Melvin H. Hutchens of Winston-Salem died October 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 13, 1925, in Yadkin County to the late William “Beth” and Nellie S. Hutchens. He was retired from Sears Technical Department with 20 years of service and worked at Adams Lumber Co. for several years. He was a member of Forbush Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Jessie Hutchens of the home; two sons, Odell Hutchens and wife Patricia and Benny Hutchens and wife Mitzi, all of East Bend; his grandson, Jody Hutchens and wife Lisa; a great-grandson, Dylan Hutchens; two sisters, Hattie Vestal and husband George and Ruby Hutchens, all of Yadkinville; three brothers, Billy G. Hutchens and wife Geraldine of Yadkinville, Rev. William Hutchens and wife Annie of Lewisville and John Mose Hutchens and wife Shelby of Yadkinville; his aunt, Isabelle Dinkins, of Winston-Salem; and Prissy the dog, his buddy.
Funeral services were held at the Gentry Family Chapel with Rev. William Hutchens officiating. Burial followed in the Forbush Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346.
Percie Brown
Percie “Perk” Brown, 89, of Boonville died October 24 at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born November 19, 1914, to William and Margaret Poindexter Chandler in Surry County. She was a member of Boonville Baptist Church and was a 42-year breast-cancer survivor. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Brown; and a son, Bobby “Pete” Brown.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Anna Brown of Boonville; her daughter, Marie Voss and husband Harold of Clemmons; her grandchildren, LuAnn Brown, of Boonville, Teresa Price and husband Johnny of Winston-Salem, Brian Voss and wife Alice of Winston-Salem, Sherri Bowman and husband Bill of Elk Grove, CA, Angela Henricks and husband Darren of Clemmons and Michelle Rumple and husband Todd of Advance; four great-grandchildren, Scarlett Voss, Adriana and Andrew Henricks and Emma Marie Rumple; a brother, Wade Chandler of Rockingham; a sister, Etta Sechrest of Huntsville, AL; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville with Rev. Kent Boaz, Rev. W.L. Pearson and special friend Laura Mathis officiating.
Delores Ann Mauldin Rash
Delores Ann Mauldin Rash, 53, of Clemmons died March 15 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born October 26, 1951, in Mecklenburg County. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church on Newsome Road in King.
Surviving are her husband, Marcus Jackson Rash; three daughters, Wendy Dawn Rash, Amanda Renee Britton and Heather Lyn Rash; a grandson, Marcus Allen Britton; and a brother, Bob Mauldin.
Funeral services were held at Cornerstone Baptist Church with Brother John Winfrey officiating.
