Peter Edwin Johe
Peter Edwin Johe, 45, of Chatham, N.J. died February 1 at home following a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was born at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Newport, R.I., in 1958. He had lived in Bloomfield and Sea Girt prior to moving to Chatham seven years ago. At the time of his death, he had worked for 17 years with the New York City Department of Transportation. He was the director of East River Bridges, where he oversaw the rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge and the Queensborough Bridge. Prior to that he had worked for the engineering firm of Edwards and Kelsey in Morristown. He had visited all of the 48 continental United States during his lifetime and had run two marathons. He held professional engineering licenses in both New York and New Jersey. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of St. Patrick’s Church and an active volunteer with the Chatham Recreation Department. He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Suzanne Johe.
Surviving are his wife, Jennifer; a daughter, Meredith, 11; a son, Steven, 10; his father, Richard of Lewisville; and his sister, Barbara Cardenas of San Jose, Calif.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Patrick’s Church.

David Earl Lawson
David Earl Lawson, 66, of North Point, Fla. died February 2 at Forsyth Medical Center. A native of Stokes County, he was born August 22, 1937, to the late David R. and Mabel Griffin Lawson. He was of the Methodist faith and was a retired appliance salesman. He loved gardening and enjoyed fishing, bowling and racing.
Surviving are his wife of 14 years, Kay Jones-Lawson; two sons, Ricky Lawson and wife Vicky of King, and Chris Lawson and wife Elizabeth of Winston-Salem,; a grandson, Jason Lawson and wife Andrea of King; a great-grandson, Noah Lawson of Bethania; a stepdaughter, Christy Jones of Florida; two stepsons, Michael Jones and wife Connie of Clemmons and David Jones and wife Lori of Florida; a stepgranddaughter; seven stepgrandsons; and a sister, Hagar Duggins of King
A memorial service was held in the Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall.

Melba Frances Oakley Gann
Melba Frances Oakley Gann, 80, of Madison, died February 2 at her home. She was born October 1, 1923, in Stokes County to Jetter Troy Oakley and the late Medley Wilkins Oakley. She was a homemaker and a member of Wilson Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Danny Gann, in 2003; her parents; and her sister, Dollie Scales.
Surviving are her daughters, Janice Cullinan and husband Mike of Arlington, Va., Cindy Lawson and husband Mark of Walnut Cove and Linda Martin and husband Terry of Madison; her son, Randall Gann of Madison; a brother, Louis Oakley and wife Evelyn of Lewisville; and her grandchildren, Brad Martin, Candi McDowell, Danny Cullinan, Zach Lawson, Jessica Lawson and Matthew Lawson.
Funeral services were held at Wilson Primitive Baptist Church with Rev. Millard Shelton and Rev. Donnie Chandler officiating, and burial followed at the Wilson Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bonnie Louise Gibson
Bonnie Louise Gibson, 75, of Pfafftown died February 3 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born April 1, 1928, in Forsyth County to Spencer and Margaret Long. Shewas a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers and sisters, Bob Long, Jack Long, Geraldine Goode and Kate Mabe.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Kermit G. Gibson of the home; her children, Jim Gibson and wife Paula of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Hurley Johnson and wife Diane of Yadkinville, Scott Gibson and wife Lori of Pfafftown, Sharon Taylor of East Bend and Steve Gibson and wife Melanie of Pfafftown; two brothers, Davis Long and wife Joyce of Pfafftown and Fred Long of King; her grandchildren, Shawn Gibson, Angel Williamson, Amy Wyatt, Zachary, Jonah and Rebekah Gibson and Kaylen Street; her great-grandchildren, Mitch, Payton, Savannah, Brooke and Chase; her special friends, Gloria Knight of Madison, Carolyn Pope of Winston-Salem, Janet Hannah of Pfafftown, Hilda Wall of East Bend and Mary “Kack” Vogler of Pfafftown; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Judy Davis and Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Michael A. Calhoun
Michael A. Calhoun, 48, of Winston-Salem died February 1. He was born October 13, 1955, to Rev. John C. and Lois V. Calhoun. He moved to Singapore with his parents in 1963, Thailand in 1966 and Guam in 1972. He was baptized at Konnoak Baptist Church in 2002.
Surviving are a son, Michael, of Guam; a daughter, Andrea, of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Johnny of Oregon, David of Hawaii and Matthew of Germany; and both parents, of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held in the Mausoleum Chapel at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Alvin C. Joines
Alvin C. Joines, 75, of South Bend, Ind., formerly of Clemmons died February 3 of cancer. He was born in Joynes, N.C., to John and Ina Edwards Joines. He taught high school in North Carolina for three years and served as a U.S. Naval officer in the Korean War. On December 25, 1951, he and Glenna Higgins were married in North Carolina. He had a successful 28-year career at the Bendix Corp., working in South Bend, Detroit, New York, Spain and Ohio. He and Glenna spent several years after retirement in Clemmons. He came out of retirement to join his sons at the Tire Rack. He was active in numerous civic and religious organizations, including as president of the Bendix Management Club, president of the South Bend Kiwanis, Junior Achievement, vice president of the Bendix Salaried Retirees Club and the board of deacons, board of trustees and moderator of First Baptist Church in South Bend.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Glenna; his sons, Michael Joines and wife Connie and Timothy Joines and wife Sherry of Granger, Ind.; his daughter, Denise Joines and husbamd Kenny Hamm of Seattle, Wash.; his grandchildren, Brian, Jeff, Kelly, Kylie, Erin and Gracie; his brothers, Bert and Thomas of North Carolina; and many friends and colleagues.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church in South Bend, and burial followed at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger.

Margaret Cole Tate
Margaret Cole Tate, 74, widow of Robert Lee Tate of Winston-Salem, died February 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1929, in Haywood County to Pat S. and Louise Duckett Cole. A member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.
Surviving are a son, Robert Tate of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Patricia C. Owen and husband Bob of Clemmons; a brother, Kenneth Cole and wife Edith of Clyde; a niece, Jennifer Cole; four nephews, G. Patrick Owen and wife Hilda of Mount Dora, Fla., Michael C. Owen and wife Elette of Mocksville and Barry and Kevin Cole; and two great-nieces, Ashline Owen of Wake Forest University and Madison Owen of Mocksville.
Funeral services were held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum with Dr. David Hughes officiating.

Julia Calhoun Hafford Callaway
Julia Calhoun Hafford Callaway, 84, of Winston-Salem died February 6 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born September 2, 1919, in Ware County, Ga., to John C. Calhoun and Julia Moxley Calhoun. She moved to Winston-Salem from Stone Mountain, Ga., in 1969.She was a member of College Park Baptist Church and a member of The College Parkers. She retired from Baptist Retirement Home as the recreation director. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wilbur A. Hafford, and her second husband, Clyde L. Callaway.
Surviving are a son, David A. Hafford and wife Maria of Lewisville; a granddaughter, Andrea Fairchild and husband Jeremy of Burlington; a grandson, Daniel Hafford of Lynchburg, Va.; a sister, Blanche Elder of Auburn, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Lois Hafford Groszmann of Waycross, Ga.; and a number of nieces and nephews from the Callaway family.
Funeral services were held at College Park Baptist Church with Rev. Ramon Smith and Dr. Charles Edwards officiating, and burial followed in Oakland City Cemetery in Waycross, Ga.

Fred Douglas Harmon
Fred Douglas Harmon, 63, of Boonville February 1 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born June 9, 1940, in Surry County to the late Arthur and Ruth Park Harmon. He worked several years and retired from Roadway Express. Afterwards, he devoted his time to his real passion, farming, which he loved dearly. He was an active member of Boonville United Methodist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two infant sons, Robert Douglas Harmon and Jason Fred Harmon; and a brother, Troy Harmon.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Mickie Boring Harmon of the home; and a sister, Peggie Harmon of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Boonville United Methodist Church with Rev. Marion Swann officiating, and burial followed in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Elkin.

Bobby Frank King
Bobby Frank King, 56, of Lexington, died February 5 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Forsyth County and was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church and an employee of the Farmers Feed & Seed Store.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley Stafford King of the home; his mother, Jeanette Pegram King of Kernersville; his father, James King Sr. of Midway; two sisters, Debbie Reich and husband Tom of Clemmons and Faye Tilley and husband Perry of Walkertown; four brothers, James King Jr. and wife Liz of Winston-Salem, Ricky King and wife Karen of Linwood, Johnny King of Winston-Salem and Carey King and wife Stacey of Raleigh; eight nephews, of whom two are very special, Jay Hill and Matthew Stafford; seven nieces; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.
A graveside service was held at Welcome Home Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Taylor officiating.

Ruth Wise Smith
Ruth Wise Smith, 77, of Clemmons died unexpectedly May 16 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born December 24, 1926, in Forsyth County to Claude William and Dora Agnes Kiser. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County. She had been employed by Hanes and Sara Lee as a looper for 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold W. Smith; and a son, Danny “Buzz” Smith.
Surviving are a daughter, Lettie S. Black of Clemmons; two sons, Harold David Smith of Winston-Salem and Jerry Dean Smith of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Bovender of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel, and burial followed in Crestview Memorial Park.

Roscoe Lake Billings
Roscoe Lake Billings, 79, of Lewisville died at his home May 10. Although the last three and one half years of his life were spent in a courageous battle with cancer, he lived a full and happy life, enjoying his family, the happiness of many friends and a successful career as an educator. He was born August 28, 1924, in Alleghany County to Rev. Roscoe Lake Billings Sr. and Cora Ruth Billings. He began his career in education in White Plains as a teacher and coach. He later served as a coach and teacher in Alleghany County and a diversified occupational teacher in Forsyth County. His career as a principal began in 1952 in Pinnacle. In 1957 he helped establish the driver-education program for the state of North Carolina. He served as principal in several schools across North Carolina, but his last 21 years were served in Guilford County as principal of Alamance Elementary School and Northwest Guilford High School. One of his greatest accomplishments was being named principal in 1962 of the newly consolidated Northwest Guilford High School, where he was successful in creating a tradition of strong academic programs. During his tenure at Northwest he also served as the supervisor of the evening adult-education program through Guilford Technical Community College. His leadership skills in education were recognized by his services as a consultant and chairman of District Five of the North Carolina Secondary Committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He was a former member of the Lions Club and served as president of the Civitan Club. He was awarded a life membership in the North Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers, was ABWA “Boss of the Year” and received numerous awards of recognition and achievement. At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Air Force and served for three years near the end of World War II. Mr. Billings, as he was known by students and parents, lived a distinguished life serving others through his skill as a teacher and as a champion for those less fortunate. He spent his retirement years raising cattle and restoring two farms and the farmhouses on them. He was most proud of his beautiful farm in southern Davidson County, from which he moved just prior to his illness. He was a member of Concord Methodist Church in Lewisville.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Jane Jackson Billings of the home; two sons, Randy Billings and wife Jane of Greensboro and Terry Billings and wife Glenda of Oak Ridge; three grandchildren, Sarah C. Billings and Graham R. Billings of Oak Ridge and Patrick W. Billings and wife Stephanie of Greensboro; three stepgrandchildren, Jacob, Kellen and Caitlin Edenfield of Greensboro; two great-grandchildren, Vica and Olia Billings of Greensboro; two sisters, Carylon B. Dockey and husband Sam of Greensboro and Vicki B. Maxwell and husband Bill of Sparta; and three brothers, Horace R. Billings of Salisbury, C.G. Billings and wife Joan of Winston-Salem and Harold Billings and wife Linda of Greensboro. He is also survived by Kathryn “Cookie” Billings of Jamestown and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Voglers Reynolda Chapel, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Clara Carroll Gaylor
Clara Carroll Gaylor, 91, of Pfafftown, formerly of Staunton, Va., died May 9 at Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ednee M. Gaylor Sr.
Surviving are a son, Ednee M. Gaylor Jr., and wife Laura of Pfafftown; two grandchildren, Virginia M. “Ginny” Gaylor and husband Joe Barvir, and Ednee M. “Trey” Gaylor III and wife Karen; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service was held in Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro, Va.

H. Peter Kuenzer
H. Peter Kuenzer, 81, of Clemmons died May 3 at Clemmons Village II. He was born June 19, 1922, in Germany. He retired from Westinghouse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte “Lotte” Kuenzer.
Surviving are his daughter, Britta Kunzer; and his grandson, Garrett Tallent, both of Clemmons.
A memorial service will be held at sea at a later date.

Frances Uldrick Trent
Frances Uldrick Trent, 87, of Winston-Salem died at her home May 15. She was born in Abbeville County, S.C., on September 4, 1916, to Thomas and Hattie Cochran Uldrick. She was a member of Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church in Abbeville, S.C., but faithfully attended Griffith Baptist Church for the past 35 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ballard Heath Trent.
Surviving are three daughters, Linda Joyce and husband Kenneth of Clemmons, Jane Wohlford and husband Steve of Clemmons and Marilyn Reid and husband Terry of Winston-Salem; two sons, Don Trent and wife Barbara of Winston-Salem and Wayne Trent and wife Susan of Yadkinville; two grandsons, Heath Cheek and wife Mandy of Swansboro and Jason Trent of Yadkinville; and two great-grandsons, Jacob Cheek and Jason Trent II.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Chaplain Meghan McSwain officiating, and burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.

Charles Dwayne Elmore
Charles Dwayne Elmore, 49, of Lewisville died May 10 from many health problems. He was born October 7, 1954, to Betty Jean Goodman and Lee Charles Elmore in Lincolnton. He worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in Winston-Salem for 19 years and retired in 1998. He was a member of Unity Moravian Church.
Surviving are his friend and partner of 25 years, Becky W. Elmore; two children, Brian C. Elmore and Daniel M. Elmore; three aunts, Marie Goodman and Katherine Goodman of Charlotte and Faye Goodman of Hickory; an uncle and aunt in Colorado, Oscar and Vickie Elmore; and a host of cousins.
Funeral services were held at Unity Moravian Church with Rev. Carl Southerland officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.

James Wilborn Holder
James Wilborn Holder, 67, of Lewisville died May 13 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born November 6, 1936, in Lewisville to James Lowell and Mabel Eugene Rominger Holder. He was a member of Lewisville Baptist Church. He was retired from Joyce Foods.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Lou Trivette Holder of the home; a daughter, April Jester and husband Thomas of Lewisville; an adopted daughter, Denise Danley of Lewisville; two brothers, Ray L. Holder and wife Dawn of Clemmons and Gray Holder of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Ruby Holder of Lewisville; a favorite niece, Pat Davis of Stuart, Va.; and a number of other nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Lewisville Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ralph Stanley officiating.

Avis Newsome Doub
Avis Newsome Doub, 92, of Pfafftown died May 11 at Village Care in King. She was born July 30, 1911, in Stokes County to Henry Walter and Lillie Alice Hendrix Newsome. She lived in Forsyth County for most of her life and was a member of Doubs Chapel United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Worth Doub, in 1992; a sister, Nedra Whitman; and a brother, Walter Guy Newsome.
Surviving are a son, Bobby Worth Doub and wife Brenda of Pfafftown; two grandsons, Kevin Worth Doub and wife Tracy of Pfafftown and Christopher James Doub and wife Angie of Pfafftown; four great-grandchildren, Carson, Rylee, Mason and Reagan Doub; a niece, Dottie Whitman; and a nephew, Leo Whitman.
Funeral services were held at Vogler’s Reynolda Chapel with Rev. Judy Davis and Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating, and burial followed at Doubs Chapel United Methodist Church.

Stella Ann France East
Stella Ann France East of Clemmons died May 13 at her home. She was born to Cicero France and Minnie Farris France. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at Chestnut Ridge Progressive Primitive Baptist Church. In her later years, she joined The Christian Fountain Church Family, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Ray L. Watlington, where she remained faithful as a humble servant of God. Her legacy was her unwavering devotion to God, family and friends. She was a provider and the doors of her home remained open to all in need. Her love was shown through her sheltering and protective embrace. Within her embrace lied her uncompromising principles of commitment, respect, honesty, trust, dignity, unselfishness and nonjudgmental attitude toward life, family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Sanders and Bernard France; a sister, Lizzie France Ziglar; her husband, James Thomas East; and a son, James Thomas East Jr.
Surviving are six daughters, Marcella East-Hatcher of Winston-Salem, Patricia Taylor and husband Thomas of Fayetteville, Palmie Jacobs and husband Floyd and Shelby East of Winston-Salem, Karen Jones and husband Anthony of Clemmons, and Lynn Tyner of the home in Clemmons; a sister, Virginia Mae Taylor of Pilot Mountain; six grandchildren, one of whom she reared as her own with his mother, Dr. Mark East and wife D’Andrea, of Suffolk, Va., and Charles Hatcher and wife Lisa, Tammy Hatcher, Vanessa Kendrick and husband Don and Shalee and Ebony East; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Ray L. Watlington officiating, and burial followed in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Pinnacle.

Henry Arthur Jones Sr.
Henry Arthur Jones Sr., 57, of Pfafftown died May 10 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on January 5, 1947, to Arthur Leroy and Annie Spease Jones. He worked for many years as an upholsterer instructor at Goodwill Industries and later as a supervisor for Bepco Inc. until his retirement. Henry was a faithful member of Bethlehem AME Zion Church and served on the usher board, male chorus and the steward board until his health failed. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur L. Jones; two brothers, Ernest W. Jones and Vernice Jones; and a nephew, Robert T. Jones.
Surviving are his wife, Rita W. Jones; his mother, Annie M. Jones; two daughters Sharla P. Goode and Chemelle A. Jones of the city; five sons, Ronald D. Jones of the city, Henry A. Jones Jr. of Brian, Texas, Timothy and Antwan Jones of Butner and Rodney Walker of Salisbury; his sister, Annie M. Walker of the city; five aunts, Dr. Irene Hairston, Vilena Ring, Christine Moses, Maize Smith and Lucille Folge; three uncles, David Spease, Willie Spease and Rev. Luther Jones; seven grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Rev. Bertha Walker; his sisters-in-law, Beverly Blair and Eunice Mayhew; a brother-in-law, Rev. Bernard Walker; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Bethlehem AME Zion Church with Rev. Alvin E. Damon, pastor, officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
