Sarojini Reddy

On February 25, 2001, a very beloved lady, Sarojini Reddy of Ganganagor, Bangalore, India, passed away. She was born on June 26, 1926, and had resided with her daughters the past few years.
Survivors include two daughters, one son, and their spouses, Vasantha and Dr. Linga Vijaya, Meena and Vijay Reddy, and Nagesh and Dr. Diwakar Krishnareddy. Also surviving are four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren whom she loved very dearly.
She was also known to many friends ad Grandmama. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral services were conducted in India.

Bertha P. Powers

HENDERSON -- Bertha Pickard Powers, 97, formerly of 325 Dabney Drive, Henderson, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in a local nursing home.
Born September 6, 1903, in Lee County, N.C., she was the youngest of four children born to the late George Henry and Sarah Frances Taylor Pickard. She was the widow of Lloyd Worth Powers. She was preceded in death by a son, George R. Powers, and a granddaughter, Donna Elizabeth Powers.
Mrs. Powers was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was a loved mother and grandmother. Her home was the center of family gatherings for many years. Friends and family enjoyed being in her company, due to her sense of humor and her excellent memory of times past. She maintained a strong interest in what was going on in the world around her up until her final illness.
Funeral services will be held Friday, at 11:00 a.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Richard Brand. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are a daughter, Annie Lou Wright, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sons, Glenn Worth Powers and Preston Eugene Powers, both of Henderson; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Don Powers, Rock Powers, Keith Powers, David Powers, Robo Newcomb, Dan Walker and Edward Powers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Memorial Garden Fund, P.O. Box 726, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mary O.C. Wimbush

HENDERSON -- Mary Ola Coleman Wimbush, 69, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Georgia Hopkins and the late Sanders Coleman.
She was educated in Vance County schools and at an early age joined the Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church.
She was married to Earnest Wimbush for 53 years.
Surviving are her husband; her mother; one son, Jimmy Wimbush of the home; three daughters, Ernestine Wimbush and Lorraine W. Harris, both of Lanham, Md., and Mary Frances Baylor of Laurel, Md.; one brother, Edmond Hopkins of Henderson; one sister, Maxine H. Williams of Hender-son; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Big Ruin Creek Baptist Church by Dr. Clyde B. Walton, assisted by the Rev. Shelton Carr. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service and other times at 412 Booth St.
Floral bearers will be Carmen Harris, Latrina Sounders, Vanessa Harris, Carolyn Jones and Jimisha Wimbush.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Johnson, Anthony Harris, Craig Allen, Willie Perry and Andre Mosley.
The body will be viewed Friday at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service of Henderson.

Queen Alston

HENDERSON -- Queen Alston, 86, of 3244 Epsom Rocky Ford Road died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the Senior Citizen Home of Henderson. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late June and Emily Marshall Alston.
For many years, she was an active member of Rocky Ford Home Extension Club. She served as a Sunday school teacher, member of the senior choir, Communion Committee and Pastor Aid Committee, and mother of Haywood Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Haywood Baptist Church by the Revs. Luther Coppedge, Frank Bullock and Harry Williams and Dr. A.A. Brown. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Laura Alston-Dudley of Louisburg, Vergie Alston-Taylor of Durham and Cora Hawkins of Henderson; three grandchildren; three step-granddaughters; three step-grandsons; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be deacons. Active pallbearers will be Anthony Allen, Bernard Allen, Curtis Burwell, Charles Marschall, Matthew Burwell, Ervin Jones and Samuel Williams.
Honorary floral bearers will be the Rocky Ford Home Extension Club, Communion Committee and Missionary Circle. Active floral bearers will be Mary Alston, Geraldine Watson, Gladys Neal, Catherine McKnight, Latia Fletcher, Delois Allen, Phyllis Alston, Cheryl White, Tracey Powell and Farrie Williams.
Viewing will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel. The body will be moved to the church one hour before the service.
The family will be at the home.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services.

James Cooper Jr.

OXFORD -- James Cooper Jr., 73, of 2223 Smith Road died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Duke Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Huntsville Baptist Church by the Revs. R.N. Holloway, Harold Trice and Lacy Joyner. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three sons, Clinton S. Cooper and Larry Cooper, both of Durham, and Donnell Cooper of Montgomery, Ala.; three daughters, Marlene C. Fields and Emma C. Crews, both of Oxford, and Patricia Cooper-Hunt of Plainfield, N.J.; one sister, Pattie Cooper of Durham; and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at 2223 Smith Road. The body will lie in state from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Oxford.

Haywood L.M. Hawkins

HENDERSON -- Haywood Louise McKnight Hawkins, 59, of 404 Chavasse Ave. died Monday, March 5, 2001, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Ella B. McKnight and the late Haywood McKnight.
She was educated in the Vance County schools and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Henderson for 48 years, serving on the usher board and the choir. For more than 30 years, she worked for Americal.
Surviving are her mother, Ella B. McKnight of Henderson; two daughters, Valarie D. Hawkins and Angela Hawkins Harris, both of Henderson; two sons, William Hawkins and Lawrence Hawkins, both of Henderson; one sister, Ella Lee Alston of Henderson; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Ratliff, presiding, and Elder Miran Henderson, assisted by the Rev. William Brodie and Minister McNeal. Interment will follow in the Blacknall cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service and other times at the residence.
Pallbearers will be Latrone Magbie, Shyheon Hargrove, Tommy Henderson, Robert Gee, Thomas Vass, Chris Gaye, Trinidy Faye and Ronnie Davis.
Floral bearers will be Patricia Harrington, Juanita Vass, Tracy Nelson, Sharon Hart, Barbara Cooper, Julia Henderson, Laura Davis, Sandra Hillard, Rosa Faines, Stacy Hargrove, Ernestine Hargrove, Josephine Hargrove, Nicole Hargrove, Dorothy Davis, Mary Hargrove, Danielle Hargrove, Barbara Parson and Lethia Cannady.
The body will be viewed today at E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service.
Arrangements are by E.C. Terry’s Funeral Service of Henderson.

HENDERSON -- Ulysses Holden Jr. died Thursday, March 8, 2001, in the Magnolia Gardens Facility.

HENDERSON -- Jessie Jones of Guardian Care of Henderson died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at her residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services.

Marilyn S. Stevenson

WARRENTON -- Marilyn Sue Stevenson, 59, of Memphis, Tenn., died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at her residence.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Rev. Patricia Archer.
Surviving are her husband, Bonnie Stevenson Jr.; three daughters, Stephanie Gettys of Gaffney, S.C., Stacie Jackson of Fredericksburg, Va., and Toni Cockrell of South Haven, Miss.; one son, Maj. Scott Stevenson of England; and two sisters, Betty Wendell of Albuquerque, N.M., and Janette Markum of Waco, Texas.
The family will receive friends at Blaylock Funeral Home before the funeral service from noon to 2 p.m. At other times, they will be at the residence of Cliff and Shelby Hicks in Norlina.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Rosanna C. Terry

MANSON -- Rosanna Champ Terry, 80, of Manson died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Guardian Care Nursing Center in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Level United Church of Christ in Drewry. The Rev. Leon White, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her mother, Annie B. Champ of Williamsboro; eight daughters, Mary Brown of Uniondale, N.Y., Annie Brooks of Henderson, Lenora Thompson of Williamsboro, Mary Boyd and Shirley Williams, both of Richmond, Va., and Jerline Henderson, Cassandra Walker and Joyce Bullock, all of Manson; four sons, Jesse Terry of the Bronx, N.Y., James Terry of Ontario, Silas Terry Jr. of Manson and Joel Terry of Jacksonville, Fla.; 34 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ethel Thompson of Williamsboro, Elizabeth Thompson of Springfield, N.Y., Lucy Brown of Queens Village, N.Y., and Annie Russell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and one brother, Eddie Champ of Henderson.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Thomas W. Frazier Jr.

HENDERSON -- Thomas Worth “Bill” Frazier Jr., age 77, a resident of 1723 Lynne Avenue, passed away at his residence on Friday. He was native of Vance County and was the son of the late Thomas Worth Frazier Sr. and Vernice Watkins Frazier.
He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, participating in first-wave invasions of the Marshall Islands, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He was retired from General Telephone Company after spending 46 years in the telephone industry.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Men’s Bible Class, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2417, American Legion Post 60, Forty & Eight, Henderson Masonic Lodge 229 AF & AM.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles M. Cook and Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rebecca Clayton Frazier; two sons, Thomas W.
Frazier III and wife Pat, and Clayton Gill Frazier and wife Billie; one daughter, Reba Ann Frazier, all of Henderson; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Frazier, Matt Frazier, Gill Frazier and Tate Frazier; four sisters, Polly F. Hobgood and Peggy F. Pegram, both of Henderson, and Iris F. Southerland and Jane F. Kittrell, both of Louisburg; four brothers, Fred D. Frazier Jr. of Weldon, Dr. Richard E. Frazier of Roanoke Rapids, Eugene Frazier of Newport News, Virginia, and Kirby Frazier of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White
Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Tommy and Pat Frazier at 1812 Parker Lane.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Terry Frazier, Jeff Frazier, Freddy Frazier, LaVern Dement, Frankie Hobgood, Randy Clayton, Larry Clayton, David Clayton, Donnie
Southerland, Weldon Lloyd and Elbert Dement Jr.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all members of the First United Methodist Church Men’s Bible Class, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion Forty & Eight, and the Henderson Masonic Lodge 229.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Winona P. Gardner

OXFORD -- Winona Philpot Gardner, 95, of 105 W. Thorndale Drive died Thursday, March 8, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Laura Hanes Philpot and the widow of Kelly Gardner.
She was a former member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a former employee of Bedford County Hospital.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Rosebank cemetery in Flat Creek, Tenn.
Surviving are her daughter, June G. Saunders of Oxford; two brothers, Andrew N. and Thomas B. Philpot, both of Shelbyville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gowen-Smith Funeral Home in Shelbyville.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Jimmy R. Grissom

OXFORD -- Jimmy Ray Grissom, 60, of 5686 Cornwall Road died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Brantwood Nursing Center.
Arrangements will be announced by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Lyndsey R. Tant

HENDERSON -- Lyndsey Rose Tant, 2-month-old daughter of Albert J. and Cynthia A. Tant of 388 S. Chavis Road, Kittrell, died Thursday, March 8, 2001, at her home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Prewer. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sisters, Krysten Tant and Brooke Roberson, both of the home; two brothers, Joshua Roberson and Jim Tant, both of the home; maternal grandparents Dennis and Pamela Abbott of Henderson; paternal grandparents Jimmy and Ruby Tant and Cathy Woodlief of Henderson; maternal great-grandparents Furman and Mae Abbott of Henderson; and paternal great-grandparents Pong Soon Finn and James and Christine Williams, all of Henderson.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Richard and Vickie Meador, 26 Friar Lane, Kittrell.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Emma A.H. Cheek

HENDERSON -- Emma Alston Hayes Cheek, 89, of Guardian Care died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Warren County native and daughter of the late Robert and Lucy Alston.
She was educated in Warren County public schools.
Early in life, she joined the Jordan Chapel Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Garnes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Shirley Piercy. Interment will be in the Brookston Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Hayes Hargrove of Henderson; four sons, Niece C. Cheek, Jessie J. Cheek and Charlie Cheek, all of Henderson, and Charles Cheek of the home; a brother, James Alston of Warrenton; 67 grandchildren; 143 great-grandchildren; and 50 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will be at 434 Whitten Ave. The viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Service.
