Mrs. Flora Moore Suddreth
Mrs. Flora Moore Suddreth, 95, of the Piney Road in Morganton died Friday, April 9, 2004 at Grace Hospital. Born August 8, 1908 in Burke County she was the daughter of the late Pink Moore and Alice Michaux Moore. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Elam B. Suddreth ; son Thomas J, Suddreth, three sisters and five brothers.
Mrs. Suddreth was a member of the Hartland A.M.E. Methodist Church where she had been a member of the church choir and church missionary work. She was loving know as “Mama Flo” for she was a loving care giver to all in the Hartland Community.
She is survived by: daughters Mary S. Johnson and husband Robert of Morganton; Clara Michaux and husband Paul of Morganton; six grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and a host nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, April 12, 2004 at the Hartland A.M.E. Methodist Church with the Reverends Hubert Carter and Renée’ Shade officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 1 till 2 PM Monday, April 12, 2004 at the Hartland Methodist Church. At other times the family will be at the home of Mary Johnson.
Mr. William Phifer Wakefield
Mr. William Phifer Wakefield, 76, of Morganton, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at Autumn Care of Drexel. Born in Burke County, August 6, 1928, he was the son of the late Logan W. and Marjorie Lytle Wakefield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Helen Waters Wakefield.
He was a member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church where he had served as Sunday School Director, choir member, was instrumental in establishing the United Methodist Men’s Brotherhood and was a leader in the development of the current cemetery and beautiful church grounds.
Mr. Wakefield retired after 36 years of employment with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, working throughout the mountains and foothills of North Carolina. Following his retirement, he and Helen moved back to Avery County at Land Harbor, where they enjoyed golf, many wonderful friendships and just being in the mountains.
He is survived by two sons, Daniel L. Wakefield and wife Sandy, of Pineville, NC and William P. Wakefield, Jr and wife, Adonya of Lenoir; and two daughters, Ann W. Young and husband, Lewis of Shelby and Betty W. White of Marion. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren, Kimberly Hendrix and husband, Jamie and Amy McCurry and husband, Larry all of Shelby; Logan and Sara Wakefield of Lenoir; Chandler and Storm Wakefield of Pineville; and Casey White of Marion; and three great-grandchildren, Colton Bowman, Canaan Hendrix and Morgan McCurry all of Shelby.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Mountain Grove United Methodist church with the Reverend Charles Sisk and Perry Brown presiding. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service in the Church fellowship building.

Mr. Wakefield’s service is under the direction of Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.
Mrs. Gladys Garrison Lane
Mrs. Gladys Garrison Lane, 76, of Taylorsville, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. She was born on November 10, 1928 in Burke County to the late Eric Trefton Garrison and Dorothy Bailey Garrison.
She was retired from Grace Hospital and a member of Salem United Methodist Church. A member there for more than 60 years, she was a choir member and active in the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her children, son, Robert Lane and wife, Laura, of Aberdeen, NC; daughter, Elizabeth (Libby) Lowdermilk, of Morganton; sisters; Evelyn Fredericks of Jamestown, NC; Doris Jean Jarrell and husband, Thomas, of Clarement; grandchildren, Karen Lane Raybourn and husband, William, of Raleigh, Eric Lane of Concord and Erica Lowdermilk of Morganton; one great grandson, Tyler Raybourn of Raleigh and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Wednesday, July 6th at Salem United Methodist Church with Reverend Donald Freshour presiding. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home.

Clyde Strickland
Clyde Strickland, age 60, of 279 Marlowe Rd., Marion, died Thursday, July 17, 2003 in McDowell Hospital.
Born in Madison County to Gretchen Davis Strickland of Old Fort and the late Clerman Strickland. He was a former employee of Dover Insulation.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Joan Anderson Strickland; one son, David Cauthen and wife, Jayme of Marion; two daughters, Barbara Davidson and husband, Josh of Marion and Molly Flynn and husband, Allen also of Marion; two brothers, Lloyd Strickland and Tommy Strickland both of Old Fort; two sisters, Jean Presnell and Madge Wren both of Old Fort; 5 grandsons, Nathaniel, Cody, Joseph, Josh and Curtis; 2 granddaughters, Ashley and Brandy; a special daughter, Faith and a large,loving family.
Graveside services will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 19, 2003 at Strickland Family Cemetery with Rev. Gary Lavender and John Presnell officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:30, Saturday, at Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort prior to the service.

Pauline Berry Lail
Pauline Berry Lail, 88, of Autumn Care of Drexel, died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Autumn Care. Born August 21, 1915 in Burke County she was the daughter of the late Raymond Berry and Sally Berry. Her husband Charlie Lail, six brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
Mrs. Lail was a member of the High Peak Baptist Church and had retired from Drexel Knitting. She was an avid gardener who loved flowers.
She is survived by a son Paul E. Hallyburton of Baltimore Maryland, daughter Edna Jean Hogan and husband Jack of Morganton, step-son Lonnie D. Lail and wife Barbara of Connelly Springs; sister Janie Adkins and husband Millard of Jacksonville Florida, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Ernie Richards officiating. Burial will follow at High Peak Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends 2 till 3 Saturday, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.

Mr. Jones “Eddie” Holland
Mr. Jones “Eddie” Holland, 92, formerly of Foreman Street in Burke County died Monday, April 12, 2004 at Grace Heights Nursing where he had resided. Born March 31, 1912 in Burke County he was the son of the late James N. Holland and Gertrude Saunders Holland. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: brothers Paul Holland, Arthur Holland, Grover Holland Sr., Willard Holland Sr., Raymond Holland; sisters Cora Lee Deal and Rudell Epley Johnson.
Mr. Holland had faithfully attended Faith Missionary Baptist Church and Rainhill Wesleyan Church in Burke County. He had worked for Broughton Hospital in the Dietary Department, Morganton Furniture Shop and had farmed the majority of his life.
He is survived by: his wife Emma Jean Kiddy Holland of Morganton and twenty one nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton with the Reverend Gary Gibbens officiating. Burial will follow at Rainhill Wesleyan Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 2 till 3 PM Wednesday at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.
Frances Aleen Woody Wyatt
Frances Aleen Woody Wyatt, 76, of Marion, died, Saturday, February 19, 2005, at McDowell Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held 2:00PM, Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at Marion First Freewill Baptist Church, with the Reverend Justin Deaton officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Jason Authur Foster
Jason Authur Foster, age 26, of 266 Los Pinos Drive, Marion, died Monday, December 15, 2003 at his residence.
Born in McDowell County to Melvin Foster of Marion and Sarah Burgin Hagood of Elizabeth City, N.C., he was an employee of GEM construction.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Kristi Pinker Foster; one brother, Eric Foster of Old Fort, N.C. and maternal grandmother, Mary Jane Burgin of Marion, N.C.
Services will be held Thursday, December 18, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home. Rev. Gary Webb will officiate with burial following in McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.
Mr. John Patton Lane
Mr. John Patton Lane, 80, of Falls Street, Morganton, died Wednesday April 14, 2004 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. He was born February 22, 1924 in Burke County and was son of the late Hugh Lane and Maybelle Smith Lane. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: brothers, Jim Lane, Roy Lane and Robert Lane; sisters, Betty Bradshaw and Bessie Lane.
Mr. Lane had retired from Henderon Furniture and was a member of the Hopewell Baptist Church. He had a great love of horseback riding and riding motorcycles.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by: his wife of fifty five years, Pansy Clark Lane of the home; son Bill R. Lane of Hickory; daughter Linda C. Smith of Morganton; brothers, Will Lane of Rutherfordton, Grover Lane, Henry Lane and Carl Lane all of Morganton; sisters, Florence Mills and Rosie Guffey both of Morganton and grandsons, Austin M. Smith, III and Jonathan A. Smith of Morganton.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Friday, April 16th at Hopewell Baptist Church with Reverend Homer Murdock officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home and other times at the family home on Falls Street.

Ella Mae Hicks Seagle
Ella Mae Hicks Seagle, age 72, died Sunday, February 20, 2005 in the McDowell Hospital.
Born in McDowell County to the late Etis and Annie Mathis Hicks, she was a retired employee of Hubbel Industries and a member of Ashworth Road Baptist Church. She was a member and Past Royal Matron of The Order of the Amaranth. She was also a member of the Order of The Eastern Star. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca Seagle.
Surviving Mrs. Seagle are her husband, Eugene Seagle; one daughter, Rhonda Seagle Ammons of Columbia, SC; one brother, Floyd Hicks of Marion, NC; one sister, Geneva Mace of Marion, NC; two grandchildren, Kristyn Ammons and Rebecca Ammons.
Services will be held 2:00 o’clock, Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Ashworth Road Baptist Church with Rev. Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 – 8:30 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion where she will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
A special ceremony by the Order of Amaranth will follow the receiving on Tuesday evening.
