ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Funeral services for Anne Woods Reed, formerly of Norlina, have been changed. The service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Norlina Baptist Church in Norlina by the Rev. Carlyle H. Hall Jr. Interment will follow at Warrendale cemetery in Norlina.
Arrangements are by Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel in Road Hill, S.C.

Jenny G. Sorensen

HENDERSON -- Jenny Karoline Grann Sorensen, 99, of 330 W. Young Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in a local nursing home.
Arrangements will be announced later by Flowers Funeral Home.

Bessie Baker

WARRENTON -- Bessie Brodie Townes Baker, 94, of the Parktown community, Warrenton, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Guardian Care Nursing Home in Henderson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Warrenton. The Rev. John Gooch, pastor, and the Rev. Robert Burnette will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Carrie Wilkins of Warrenton; three sons, James Morris Townes and Nathaniel Townes, both of Warrenton, and Robert Earl Townes of Stoneville; 45 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ellen Watson of East Orange, N.J.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel in Warrenton.
Arrangements are by Boyd’s Funeral Services of Warrenton.

Vergie Bell Lassiter Faulkner

HENDERSON -- Vergie Bell Lassiter Faulkner, 73, a resident of 1704 North Carolina Highway 39 in Louisburg, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, in Franklin Regional Hospital.
She was a native of Vance County and the daughter of the late Melville Gray and Josie Grissom Lassiter. She was the widow of Alfred Edward Faulkner. She was a secretary for Henderson Tile and Linoleum and a member of the Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Blessed Hope Baptist Church, led by the Rev. Donnie Perkinson and the Rev. Tim Short. Burial will be in the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Maynor of Pembroke and Brenda Hunt of Lumberton; two sons, Edward Ray Faulkner of Henderson and Alfred Edward Faulkner Jr. of Lumberton; two sisters, Elizabeth Perkinson and Josephine Langley, both of Henderson; three brothers, James Lassiter, Eugene Lassiter and Melville Lassiter, all of Henderson; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The pallbearers will be deacons of the Blessed Hope Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Elizabeth Perkinson, 1791 N.C. Highway 39 South, Henderson.

Howard Hawkins Sr.

HENDERSON -- Howard Hawkins Sr., 85, of 431 Cross Creek Road, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Amos and Minnie Hawkins.
He was educated in the Warren County Public Schools System, later relocating to Brooklyn, N.Y., where he was a retired employee of the ABC Lumber Company.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Phipps Chapel Baptist Church by Dr. A.A. Brown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Madeline Hawkins; five sons, George E. Milon of Abbeyville, S.C., Howard Hawkins Jr., James C. Hawkins, Albert T. Hawkins, all of Henderson, Clarence Hawkins of Cleveland, Ohio; four daughters, Mary Jones of Atlantic City, N.J., Annie R. Kearney of Henderson, Sarah L. Reynolds of Hampton, Va., Norma Elaine Dudley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two brothers, Walter Hawkins of Cleveland, Ohio, and Charlie Hawkins of Henderson; 36 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Scottie Hawkins, Alphonso Bullock, James Thomas and Henry Hawkins. Floralbearers will be Henrietta Macon, Tina Macon and other family and friends.

Oscar Harris

WARREN COUNTY -- Oscar Harris, 60, of Warren County, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Robert Lyons

HENDERSON -- Robert “Hub” Lyons, 76, a Henderson native, died in Newark, N.J. He was born in Cambridge, Mass., and was the son of James and Harriett Lyons.
He worked and retired as a Longshoreman in New Jersey.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service by the Rev. Joseph L. Ratliff, assisted by the Rev. William C. Brodie. Burial will follow in the Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Heatley Lyons of New Jersey; five children, Valerie Perry, Michael Ferguson, Robert Steward, James Steward and Alandis Borbed; two sisters, Gladys Hawkins of Henderson, Iona McElveen of New York; and several grandchildren.
The body will be on view at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral, starting at 2 p.m. today.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Services of Henderson.

William W. McFalls

OXFORD -- William Wren McFalls, 67, of 3223 Knotts Grove Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Duke Medical Center. He was a Mitchell County native and the son of the late Jeter and Maude Autry McFalls.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Creedmoor and was a retired logger for 40 years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Chapel by the Revs. Eddie Mauldin and Don Brown. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Burnell Newcomb McFalls of Oxford; two sons, Garry Allen and Steven Wren, both of Oxford; a daughter, Patricia Lynn McFalls of Oxford; three brothers, Don McFalls of Stem, Ray McFalls of Oxford, Tony McFalls of Roxboro; two sisters, Ann McFalls of Stem and Linda Self of Oxford; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Creedmoor, P.O. Box 38, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Oxford.

Jenny G. Sorensen

HENDERSON -- Jenny Karoline Grann Sorensen, 99, of 330 West Young Ave., Henderson, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, in a local nursing home. She was a native of Fulgslev, Denmark, and the daughter of the late Rasmus Andersen and Jensine Andersen Grann. She was the widow of John Sorensen Sr.
She was a 1928 graduate of Norwegian American Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, Ill. She was a registered nurse and retired from Maria Parham Hospital after a total of 40 years in nursing. She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Denmark.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Richard Brand. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are a step-daughter, Gladys Sorensen of the home; a stepson, John Sorensen Jr. of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; three step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the home on 330 West Young Ave.
Serving as active pallbearers will be George Dickie, Frank Madigan, Eric Sorensen and Perry Sorensen.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, Vance County Chapter, P.O. Box 635, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by Flowers Funeral Home of Henderson.

Patricia N. Earp

CHESTERFIELD -- Patricia N. Earp, 67, of Chesterfield, died Jan. 18, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland; her daughter, Debra K. Figg; and her granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Figg.
Surviving are four children, Bonita Earp, Jack Thomas Earp, Patricia E. Chewning and Kendall Ray Earp; two sisters, Peggy N. Fisher and Shirley N. Joyner, both of Henderson; one brother, Hubert R. Nowell Jr. of Richmond; six grandchildren, Shannon, Kevin, Crystal, Jacob, Melissa, and Jeremy; and one great-grandson, Kaleb. Funeral services will be held 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Road, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment will be in Jacksonville, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Diabetes. Association or the American Arthritis Foundation.
Arrangements are by Bliley Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel, Richmond, Va.

Oscar Harris Jr.

HENDERSON -- Oscar Harris Jr., 60, of Warren County died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Wright Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Jerome Taylor. Burial will be Monday in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving is one sister, Peggie Brown of Baltimore, Md.
The family will receive visitors at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. George and Barbara King, 21 Breckenridge St.
The body will lie in state today, starting at 12 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.
Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.

Ruth F. Johnson

OXFORD -- Ruth Freeman Johnson, 82, of 5686 Parham Woods Court died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in Granville Medical Center. She was a native of Greenville County, S.C., and the daughter of the late Milton V. and Elise Shockley Freeman.
She was retired from John Umstead Hospital in Butner and a member of Oxford Baptist Church where she was in the Women Day Circle.
Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oxford Baptist Church by the Revs. Dr. J. Steven Bolton and J. Lemar Wheeler.
Surviving are three sons, Van Wood of Oxford, Jim Wood of Oxford and Henry Johnson of Stem; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Foster of Louisville, Ky.; and two brothers, Joe Freeman and Jim Freeman, both of Greenville, S.C.
The family requests the omission of flowers and memorials to A.C.I.M., c/o Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, N.C. 27565 or to Meals on Wheels, c/o Granville County Social Services, 120 Orange St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Helen H. Lewis

JASPER, GA. -- Mrs. Helen Hayes Lewis, born August 31, 1907 in Vance County, N.C., died Jan. 19, 2001, at Grandview Health Care Center, Jasper, Ga.
Mrs. Lewis was the widow of William D. Lewis, and was active in civic, cultural and religious affairs in High Point, N.C. A graduate of High Point College, Mrs. Lewis taught school in Asheville, N.C., in the late 1920’s.
She is survived by a son, William D. Lewis, Jr., Jacksonville, N.C.; a daughter, Elizabeth Herzig, Melbourne, Fl.; sister, Mabel Williams, Warrenton, N.C.; granddaughters, Mattie Davis, Acworth, Ga., Catherine Armstrong, Birmingham, Al.; great-grandchildren, Kimball Rice Jr., Kevin Johnson, Elizabeth Alston Armstrong and Catherine McMasters Armstrong.
A memorial service and interment will be held this Spring in High Point, N.C.
Arrangements are by Chapman Funeral Home, Jasper, Ga.

OXFORD -- J.T. Oakes, 82, of 137 Pine Cone Drive died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, in N.C. Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Arrangements will be announced later by Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Ola G. Taylor

WARRENTON -- Ola Gibson Taylor, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. She was the daughter of the late Garland and Nannie Sutton Gibson. She was the widow of John Taylor.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Warrendale cemetery in Norlina.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Nell W. Brantley

WARRENTON -- Nell Williams Brantley, of Wilmington, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the Hospice of the Lower Cape Fear following a long illness. She was a Halifax County native, and was born in Nash County to the late Thomas Conrad and Annie Crawley Williams.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Wilmington.
Surviving are her husband, Charles R. Brantley of Wilmington; two daughters, Angela Hutchings of Wilmington and Lisa Billingsly of Lynchburg, Va.; one son, Charles R. Brantley Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Mary Ann Qualls of Hollister; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Harris Chapel Baptist Church in Hollister by the Rev. Hal Jones. Graveside services will follow at 4 p.m. at White Rock Plantation in Hollister.
The family will receive visitors at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Qualls of Williams Road, Hollister.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home in Warrenton.
Memorials may be made to the Christian Appalachian Project, 322 Crab Orchard St., Lancaster, Ky., 40446 or to Hospice of the Lower Cape Fear, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, N.C. 28401.

Lizzie Ellington

HENDERSON -- Lizzie Ann Medley Ellington, 88, of Henderson, widow of Alvin Dewey Ellington, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Henderson.
Surviving are her son, James Williams of Kenly; three sisters, Annie Mae Powell of Boydton, Va., Mildred Dunnaway and Lucindy Dunnaway of Halifax, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Woodland cemetery, Chase City, Va., with the Rev. Michael Coward officiating.
Arrangements are by Wood Funeral Service of Chase City, Va.

Dick Faines

HENDERSON -- Dick Faines, of the Guardian Care Nursing facility, has died.
Arrangements will be announced later by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Eddie C. Faulkner

CHESTERFIELD, Va. -- Eddie Conn Faulkner, a resident of 4732 Wedgemere Road in Chesterfield, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Health South Hospital in Richmond.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late William Cade and Minnie Ball Faulkner. He was a retired master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean conflict and the Vietname War, and was the retired owner of Eddie C. Faulkner Accounting.
He was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Richmond.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel, led by the Rev. Bob Crute and Ken Faulkner. Burial will follow in the New Sandy Creek Baptist Church cemetery with full military honors.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Currin Faulkner; one daughter, Betsy Faulkner Williams of Richmond; one son, Tony Faulkner of Palm Coast, Fla.; two sisters, Ethel F. Briggs and Josephine F. Raby, both of Henderson; one brother, William Allen Faulkner of Danville, Va.; and three granddaughters.
The family will receive friends Monday night from 7 until 8:30 at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of W.A. and Irene Currin, 206 West Creek Road, Henderson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 15287, Chevy Chase, Md. 20825.
The J.M. White Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
