Mary Florence Hammett Keys
Mary Florence Hammett Keys, 93, of Pfafftown died May 25 at Clemmons Village I Assisted Living. She was born November 5, 1912, in Jonesborough, Tenn., to Isaac and Maude Hammett. She lived in Telford, Tenn., most of her life before moving to Pfafftown in 1999 to be near her daughter and family. Her husband of 73 years, Albert “Ted” Keys, preceded her in death in April 2005.
Surviving are her daughter, Betty Keys Shanks and husband Don; three grandchildren, Michael Shanks, Donna Shanks and Charles Shanks and wife Lisa; 10 great-grandchildren, Miranda Shanks, Kendra Parker, Melanie Johnson and husband Doug, Heather Roels and husband Jason, Windy Jeffords, Michelle Shanks, Kyle Parker, Charles Shanks Jr., Morgan Shanks and Trevor Shanks; and three great-great-grandchildren, Hunter Johnson, Claire Buskirk and Alana Roels.
A graveside service was held at Brookstown United Methodist Church Cemetery in Pfafftown with Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating.
Norma Bolen Smith
Norma “Gail” Bolen Smith, 54, of Lewisville died July 5 at her home. She was born May 28, 1952, in Raleigh County, W.Va., to Elmer and Hazel Alexander Bolen. She was employed with Salemtowne and attended King Christian Center. She was preceded in death by her father and her sister, Betty LaVoy.
Surviving are her husband of 36 years, Mitchell Smith of the home; a daughter, Tina Binkley and husband Scott; a son, Mickey Smith and wife Gina; her mother, Hazel Bolen; six sisters, Delores Keaton, Jean Merritt, Ruby Reynolds, Geraldine Smith, Joan Armstrong and Judy Creech; four brothers, Ray, Richard, Jimmy and Harold Bolen; and three grandsons, Austin Binkley, Chase Smith and Gavin Smith.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Randall Smith and Pastor Miles Bryant officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Judith Morris Koontz
Judith Morris Koontz, 65, of Lexington died July 6 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born December 15, 1940, in Davidson County, to James Willie Morris and Delilah Wilson Morris. She was a teacher for the Davidson County School System, having taught at Southwood Elementary School. She was an avid painter, gardener and decorator. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Kathy Suzanne Koontz; and a sister, Lou Etta Burton.
Surviving are her husband, Palmer Joel Koontz of the home; daughters Sandy Nato and husband Bill of Raleigh and Melinda Smith and husband Larry of Clemmons; grandchildren Christopher Beau Smith, Joshua Joel Smith and Melissa Erin Smith, all of Clemmons, and Caleb Gianni Nato of Raleigh; and brothers James Willie “Chick” Morris Jr. and wife Jessie of The Lakes, Fla., and Charles Danny Morris of Lexington.
A memorial service was held at Paul’s Chapel United Church of Christ with Rev. Dave Ambroso officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
Louise Porter Orr
Louise Porter Orr, 104, of Winston-Salem, widow of Daniel B. Orr, died July 8 at the Reynolda Park. She was born in South Carolina and moved to Winston-Salem 22 years ago after the passing of her husband. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Howard Byars.
Surviving are a daughter, Alcie Byars and husband Howard of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Karen Van Nostrand and husband Jay; a great-granddaughter, Christy Van Nostrand; and a great-grandson, Steven Mark Sutton, all of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery.
Laura Knox Thomas
Laura Knox Thomas of East Bend died July 2. She was born in Winston-Salem to Henry and Leronia Gaither Knox. She retired from Western Electric/AT&T, where she worked for most of her adult life. As a youth, she joined the West End Baptist Church, which later became the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as a member of the Deaconess Board and the Gospel Choir. She was also actively involved in community activities and social engagements. She and her husband were featured in the March 13, 2006, edition of Jet Magazine. In the article, she shared her secrets to a lasting marriage building on a strong foundation of love. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James Knox and Macon Knox; and a sister, Leronia Knox.
Surviving are her husband, Franklin M. Thomas; two sons, Kevin Thomas and wife Vanessa of Greensboro and Kenneth Thomas and wife Monecia Rena of Burlington; two grandsons, Justin and Steven Thomas, both of Greensboro; two sisters, Mattie Johnson of Milwaukee, Wis., and Lizzie K. Anthony of Lewisville; three brothers, William Knox and wife Mildred of Winston-Salem, William Knox of Buffalo, N.Y., and John Henry Knox and wife Ann of Winston-Salem; her sister-in-law, Adline Thomas of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Prince Raney Rivers officiating. Burial followed at Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
James Daniel Hewett
James Daniel “Jim” Hewett, 67, died July 2 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 31, 1938, of Shallotte, to Delmas G. Hewett and Cozey W. Hewett. He spent nine years in the U.S. Army as an ordnance officer and retired after 27 years of service from Wachovia Bank as a group executive for Wachovia Student Loan Financial Services. He served faithfully at Clemmons United Methodist Church for over 25 years, where he taught Sunday school, served in the Stephens Ministry Program and joyfully served in other leadership roles.
Surviving are a brother, Dykes Hewett; his wife, Carol D. Hewett; two daughters, Dane H. Brackett and Sarah H. Holmes; and four grandsons, Daniel, Evan, Davis and Aaron of Raleigh.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons United Methodist Church
Albert Smith Foster
Albert Smith Foster, 82, of Winston-Salem died suddenly July 6 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 5, 1923, in Forsyth County to the late Albert Smith Foster Sr. and Stella Huff Foster. He was retired from AT&T with 35 years of service. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and of Wilshire Golf Club. He served his Country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was attached to Battery B, 334th Field Artillery as a gunnery sergeant, where he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise and Frances; and his first wife, Bonnie Byrd Foster.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis of the home; a daughter, Gayle F. Graig and husband Tom of Statesville; a daughter, Marsha F. Copenhaver and husband Myron of Bluntville, Tenn.; a daughter, Dana F. Minton of Winston-Salem; a son, Kirk L. Foster and wife Marryha of Illinois; four stepchildren, Nancy K. Evdoxiadis of Florida, Cynthia K. White of Winston-Salem, Susanne K. Reary of Messa, Ariz. and Peggy K. Porter of Roswell, Ga.; a brother, Richard M. Foster of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Jeff Woosley and wife Tina of Clemmons and Bryan Woosley of Atlanta, Ga.; nine stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Al Gilbert and Dr. Guy Hipp officiating. Burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.
Peggy Frances Hege
Peggy Frances Hege of Advance died July 7 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Davie County to the late Charlie L. and Ella Smith Hege. She was a member of Elbaville United Methodist Church. She retired from Hanes with 27 years of service and later pursued her second career as a waitress for the Clemmons Kitchen, where she made numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Press C. Robertson; a sister, Helen Jones; and two brothers, Charlie Hege Jr. and Bobby Clay Hege.
Surviving are her former husband, Charles T. Hupp Jr.; two sons, Grant Robertson and wife Becky of Clemmons and Denny Hupp of Advance; three grandchildren, Kelli R. Cockrum of Clemmons, Chad G. Robertson and fiancee Erin Sandler of Winston-Salem and Carrie Hellard of Salisbury; a brother, Clint Hege; a sister, Sarah Seaford; a sister-in-law, Betty R. Hege; and two special loved ones, Frances Pollock of Winston-Salem and Mystie Pollock of Illinois.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Derry Barnhart officiating.
Ruth Pulliam Mabe
Ruth Pulliam Mabe, 83, formerly of Kernersville and a resident of Brookridge Baptist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, died July 4 at Forsyth Medical Center after a year of declining health. She was born in Stokes County on June 5, 1923, to Grover P. and Agnes Holder Pulliam. She was a retired bookkeeper for the Tar Heel Triad Girl Scout Council and was a member of First Christian Church in Kernersville. She was the widow of Lawrence O. Mabe and a resident of the Piney Grove community for most of her adult life.
Surviving are three sons, J. Wayne Mabe and wife Diane of Lewisville, Ned Mabe and wife Carolyn of Kernersville, Doug Mabe and wife Linda of Roxboro; a daughter, Tammy McCrary and husband Kirby of Clemmons; six grandchildren, Tiffany Stark and husband Anthony of Rural Hall, Austen Mabe of Charlotte, Daniel Mabe of San Francisco, David Mabe of Charlotte, Patrick McCrary and Emily McCrary of Clemmons; and a great-grandchild, Christine Stark of Rural Hall.
Funeral services were held at First Christian Church in Kernersville. A private entombment service was held at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.
Virginia Solomon Carswell
Virginia Solomon Carswell, 88, died July 3 at Springwood Care. She was born August 28, 1917, in Burke County, to Thomas and Dolly Sheehan Solomon. She was a member of Griffith Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She is formerly of Chesnee, S.C., and Marion. She was retired from Marion Manufacturing Co. in Marion. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roland Rumfelt; her second husband, Martin Carswell; a son, Frank Rumfelt; and her parents.
Surviving are her son, Bennie Rumfelt and wife Lynda of Clemmons; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a half sister, Joyce Tedder of Marion; daughter-in-law Jenny Rumfelt of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Tony Brown officiating. Burial followed at McDowell Memorial Park in Marion.
Edmund Casimir Adams
Edmund Casimir “Lefty” Adams, 88, of Clemmons died September 5 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He was born on January 3, 1918, in Waterbury, Conn., to the late William Adomavicia and Mary Alexandravich. He was a firefighter and inspector with the Waterbury Fire Department for 35 years. He was a lifetime parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Waterbury. He attained his fourth degree in the Bishop O’Reilly Assembly - Sheridan Council No. 24 of the Knights of Columbus and also held memberships in the Waterbury Elks Club, the Knights of Lithuania, the “48” Club and the Catholic War Veterans. He was a basketball and baseball player and coach and an avid golfer. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, stationed at the Savannah Army Air Base as a military policeman during World War II. He received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alubauskas Adams; and five sisters.
Surviving are his son, Mark S. Adams of Fredericksburg, Va., and his daughter, MaryAnn Sonntag and husband Dr. William E. Sonntag of Clemmons; his grandson, David W. Sonntag and wife Allyson; and his great-grandson, Asher David of Raleigh.
A funeral Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church.
Levi Henry Brown
Levi Henry Brown, 78, of Clemmons died September 8 at his home. He was born February 9, 1928, in Iredell County to Solomon Levi and Pearl Swaim Brown. He was a member of West Bend Baptist Church, where he taught the Adult Sunday school class. He was the founder and operator of Henry’s Electric Motor Service. He was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Brown.
Surviving are his wife, Frances H. Brown of the home; two sons, Daniel Brown and wife Barbara of Winston-Salem and Steve Brown and wife Daphne of Clemmons; three daughters, Connie Reavis and husband Carl of Mocksville and Sherry Holt and husband Steve and Debbie Brown, all of Lewisville; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers; and four sisters.
A graveside service was held in West Bend Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Carroll Bibb officiating.
Lonnie Monroe Thompson
Lonnie Monroe Thompson, 58, of Mocksville died September 8 at his home. Born in Rockingham County on August 11, 1948, he was the son of Wiley Minor and Annie Mae Alls Thompson. He was employed at State’s Industries and was of the Baptist faith. He served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, David and Darren Thompson.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Angell Thompson of the home; three sons, Donnie Thompson and wife Tammy of Cloverdale, Va.; Joshua Thompson of Clemmons; and Jacob Thompson of the home; two brothers, Ronnie Thompson and wife Carolyn and David Thompson and wife Lynn, all of Salem, Va.; two sisters, Wilda Wilson and husband Jerry of Mocksville and Elaine Thompson of Salem; a special daughter-in-law, Janie Thompson Christian; and two grandchildren, Darean and Carly Thompson.
Funeral services were held in Davie Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Gryder and Rev. Dr. A.D. Williams officiating. Burial followed in Rose Cemetery.
Elizabeth Powell Hawkins Caudill
Elizabeth “Betty” Powell Hawkins Caudill, 74, of Clemmons died September 7 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on September 16, 1931, in Bonne Terre, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Ruth Isabel Dietrich and Notley William Hawkins. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem, the church’s Presbyterian Women and Circle Six group and the Covenant Sunday-school class. She was voted the “Most Cheerful” girl in high school and aspired to be a Rockette. She also had several roles in life including time-clock maker, secretary, physicist’s assistant, military wife, grandmother and caring friend. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mariella Capes; and her brother, William Hawkins Jr.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Middelton Caudill, and her children, Robert Middelton Caudill Jr., Mary Ann Caudill Placey and James Hawkins Caudill.
A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem with Drs. Jeff White and Russ Ritchel officiating. A funeral and burial service was held at Shannon’s in Shelbyville, Ky.
Martha Dull Yates
Martha Dull Yates, 94, of Lewisville died September 9 at her home. She was born January 25, 1912, in Forsyth County to Charlie Monroe and Cora Isabelle Woosley Dull. She was a lifelong member of Shiloh Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malon E. Yates Sr.; a sister; and three brothers.
Surviving are two sons, Malon E. Yates Jr. and wife Amelia, of Lewisville and Gordon C. Yates and wife Dorothy of Pfafftown; two grandchildren, Judy Yates Tuttle and husband Craig and Richard Emery Yates and wife Lori; three great-grandchildren, Justin Yates, Kristen Yates and Travis Tuttle; a stepgreat-granddaughter, Meredith Tuttle; and two sisters, Edna Wilson of Lewisville and Eva Hines of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Shiloh Lutheran Church with Pastor Amy Crump officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Nannie Lee Sebastian Cornwell
Nannie Lee Sebastian Cornwell, 89, of Winston-Salem died September 2. She was born November 15, 1906 in Grayson, Va. to Worth and Carrie Elizabeth Pugh Sebastian. She endured a life-threatening illness in her childhood and many hardships yet maintained a positive attitude. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benjamin McBride Cornwell; four sisters; and a brother.
Surviving are her daughter, Maude C. Bledsoe and husband Bill of Winston-Salem; her son, Benjamin McBride Cornwell Jr. and wife Felicia of Uintah, Utah; grandchildren Joseph Cornwell and wife Kathy of Ogden, Utah; Sara Smelcer and husband George of Knoxville, Tenn.; Charlot Wood and husband Lupton of Yadkinville; Charles Frye and wife Sherry of Henderson, Nev.; and Carrie Hall and husband Joey of Fayetteville; and great-grandchildren Walker and Raleigh Cornwell of Ogden, Utah; Ben and Caroline Wood of Yadkinville; Bristol and Marshall Barnette and Callie Davis of Fayetteville.
Funeral services were held at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel with Dr. Robert L. Phillips officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Alan Yale Cohen
Alan Yale “Bubba” Cohen, 39, of Clemmons died unexpectedly September 5. He was born January 23, 1967, in West Palm Beach, Fla., son of Sandra Cohen and the late Harold Cohen. He was a graduate of Sylva Webster High School, where he excelled in farming and drove a school bus. He later went on to further his education in the automotive industry. His passions were four-wheeling, cooking and music.
Surviving are his mother; two sisters; two nephews; a niece; and and longtime friends, Paul and Teresa Freer of Clemmons and David Ashe of Sylva; Lauren Freer; Sherry Whaley; and Ally Primavera.
A private memorial service was held in Clemmons with Mark Jones officiating.
Texie Jeanette West
Texie Jeanette “Dottie” West, 78, of Winston-Salem died September 7 at Silas Creek Manor. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 33 years of service. She was preceded in death by a grandson, James Joseph West.
Surviving are two sons, Billy West and wife Judy of Clemmons and James West and wife Lisa of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, James Robert West, Jeffrey Glenn West, Michael West, Gerri Lynn Hicks and Mandy West; and four great-grandchildren, Cassey, Mandy, Dillon and Cassidy.
Doris Phelps Curtiss
Doris Phelps Curtiss 79, of Clemmons died September 10 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. SHewas born in Elizabeth City on September 3, 1927, to Alonzo and Cassandra Sawyer Phelps. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons and was an avid reader. Her passion in life was her family. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott Matthew Curtiss, in 1968.
Surviving are her husband, Bernard Carroll Curtiss of the home, a daughter, Carole Curtiss Hiller and husband Keith of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Matthew Hiller and wife Wendy, Katy Ringeman and husband Tim, and Gregg Hiller and Ben Hiller; two great-grandchildren, Peyton Hiller and Ashley Hiller; and two sisters, Rae Eason and husband Henry Eason, of South Mills, and Emma Shinn of Royston, Ga.
A memorial service was held at Holy Family Catholic Church Chapel with Father Michael Butner officiating.
Geraldine Anne Hauser
Geraldine Anne “Jerry” Hauser, 71, of Pfafftown, died September 7 at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of declining health. She was born in Guilford County on January 18, 1935, the daughter of Grady Aston Palmer Sr. and Annie Mae Best Palmer. She was a member of Beck’s Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She had retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system, for which she was a teacher with 30 years of service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 355, the Amaranth, the Camel Shrine and the Red Hat Society.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, M.T. “Tom” Hauser Sr. of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Fulp of Pfafftown and Anne Ball and husband Rich of Kernersville; a son, Tom “T.J.” Hauser Jr. of Ararat; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Grady Aston Palmer II of Marietta, Ga.; and many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel in Clemmons with Dr. Ray Hamilton officiating.
James Henry Lombardi
James Henry Lombardi, 51, of Lewisville died August 30. He was born and raised in New Jersey. He began his career as a CPA for Price Waterhouse. In 2004, he moved with his family to Lewisville and continued his career with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. After 15 years with the company, he retired from his position as director of federal tax audits in November 2005. He enjoyed vacationing with his wife and children, skiing with his son and sharing artistic views and film appreciation with his daughter. He played both piano and guitar and was a respected collector of music memorabilia with a particular in-depth knowledge of The Beatles. Part of his collection is currently on loan to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Diane; his daughter, Jessica, a junior at UNCA, and his son, Daniel, a senior at West Forsyth; his mother, Alice Lombardi; his sister, Linda Woeste and husband Warren of Pfafftown; and his brother, Nicholas Lombardi and wife Pat of Spotswood, N.J.
