Mary Alice T. Bell

HENDERSON -- Mary Alice Talley Bell, 92, of 143 Lake View Drive, Henderson, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000 in U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill.
A native of Red Bank, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Bailey Peyton Talley, Sr. and Lilla Dale Martin Talley. She has been a resident of Henderson since 1925, and was the widow of Henry Daniel “Toby” Bell.
Mrs. Bell was a retired accounting clerk with Rose’s Stores, Inc., where she was employed for more than thirty years. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for more than fifty years.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, at 2 p.m., in Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by Dr. Marion D. Lark. A private burial will be held in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary E. Talley, Beulah Talley Nelson, Daisey Talley Brown, Etta Talley Johnson, and Martha Talley Cates; and four brothers, Clarence Lee Talley, Oscar R. Talley, Bailey E. Talley, and Bailey P. Talley, Jr.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Flowers Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Rotellia P. Green

WARRENTON -- Rotellia Patillo Green, 74, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Maryland.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Sunday at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Oine. The Rev. Walter Crawford will officiate.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

Milton L. Hight

URBANNA, Va. -- Milton Langston “Bill” Hight, age 84, a resident of Urbanna, Virginia, and a former resident of Henderson, died Friday morning at Rappahannock Westminister Canterbury in Irvington, Virginia.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of the late William Christopher and Geneva Langston Hight. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Betty Knott Hight, in 1997.
His business career, beginning in 1940, included farming, fertilizer and tobacco sales and storage in Henderson. Bill was a former president of the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce, Directors of Peoples Bank and Trust Co., and President of Hight Warehouses, Inc.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church by Dr. Marion D. Lark. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by one daughter, Ruth Hight Jones, of Henderson; one son, W. C. Hight, of Urbanna, Virginia; four grandchildren, Mary Allison Hight McCue, William Christopher Hight, III, Gaither Wilson Jones, and Hayden Edwin Jones; and one brother-in-law, G.W. Knott and his wife Dorothy of Henderson.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home in Saluda, Virginia and in the Parlor of the First Baptist Church on Tuesday from 1 until 1:45 p.m. and after Sunday at the home of Ronnie and Ruth Jones, 2296 Woodland Road, Henderson, N.C.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 71, Urbanna, Virginia 23175, or to the First Baptist Church, 205 Winder Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.
Arrangements are by the J.M. White Funeral Home.

Dorian L. Johnson-Holmes

HENDERSON -- Dorian LaShawn Johnson-Holmes, 23, of 114 Kearney St., died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was the daughter of Cynthia J. Solomon and Harry S. Gilmore. She was the stepdaughter of Larry Solomon.
She was educated in the Durham and Vance County School System graduating from Northern Vance High School.
She was a member of Kesler Temple A.M.E. Zion Church where she sang in the choir and also where the funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today by the Revs. Nathaniel Mitchell and Jessie Yowell. Burial will follow in Blacknall cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Jeffery A. Holmes of the home; one daughter, CyMaiya N. Johnson; one son, Jeffery A. Holmes Jr., both of the home; two brothers, Dedric R. Johnson of Suitland, Md., and Stephen Gilmore of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Donita Solomon of Henderson and Apryl Gilmore of Durham; maternal grandparents, Ruben and Connie Daniels of Henderson; paternal grandmother, Janet Kennell of Durham; and a great-grandmother, Autra L. Johnson of Durham.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Floralbearers will be family and friends.
The body will be on view at the church one hour prior to the service on today.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Annie L. Richardson

WARRENTON -- Annie L. Richardson, 43, of Warrenton, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today at Shiloh Baptist Church in Arcola. The Rev. Will C. Taborn, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Richardson’s Family cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Clinton Richardson of Enfield; one son, Derrick Richardson of Arcola; her mother, Martha Richardson of Arcola; and three sisters, Veila Solomon, Josephine Lynch, and Bettie Alston, all of Arcola.
Arrangements are by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.

C. Maurice Tippett

OXFORD -- C. Maurice Tippett, 86, of 218 Grace St., died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, in Treyburn Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Durham. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late William A. Tippett and Bessie Hight Tippett.
He was a member of Peace’s Chapel Baptist Church and a retired auto parts manager.
Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Shirley T. Jones of Goldsboro and Betty Tippett Harris of Oxford; one sister, Doris T. Williams of Newport News, Va.; three brothers, W. Haywood Tippett and Thurman Tippett, both of Oxford, and James Hight Tippett of Durham.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Phillips Jr. Burial will follow in Elmwood cemetery.
The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Flowers are accepted or the family requests that you do a kind deed for an elderly person.
Active pallbearers will be Howard Dickerson, Titus Dickerson, David Tippett, Stanley L. Daniel Jr., Sherwood Harris, James Thomas Daniel, Amos Harris and Chris Sexton.
Arrangements are by Gentry-Newell &I Vaughan Funeral Home of Oxford.

Frank J. White

CREEDMOOR -- Frank J. White, 86, of 1639 Hwy. 50, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at his home.
Arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home of Oxford.

Gertrude W. Wilson

OXFORD -- Gertrude Wilkerson Wilson, 81, of 3212 Henry Wilson Road, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Granville Medical Center.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. George L. Bullock. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Jean C. Jones of Oxford; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home.

Frank B. Banzet

WARRENTON -- Frank Broadhurst Banzet, 93, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at his home on Graham Street in Warrenton. He was a Ridgeway native and the son of Julius Edmond Banzet Sr. and Eleanor Jones Broadhurst Banzet.
He was former mayor, state senator and leader in the civic and professional life of Warrenton for more than six decades.
He began his practice of law in 1932, becoming a member of the Warrenton law firm of Banzet and Banzet. In 1941, he was married to Miss Elba McGowan of Greenville.
During World War II, Banzet was assigned to the office of Gen. George C. Marshall, chief of staff in the War Department in Washington, D.C. He was detailed with General Marshall’s staff to Quebec for “Quadrant”, the code name for a conference between President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill. For his performance there, he was commended by Field Marshall Sir John Dill, chief of the Imperial British General Staff.
Banzet served as vice-chairman and chairman of the Warren County Democratic Executive Committee, a member and commander of American Legion Post 25, and assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
He was counselor to the North Carolina Bar Council from the Ninth Judicial District and served in the State Senate in 1961, the last year in which the legislature met in the State Capitol.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Thomas Broadhurst Banzet of Stoneville; one daughter, Lucy White Banzet von Heiland of Oak Hills, Calif.; and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of the Good Shepard Episcopal Church cemetery in Ridgeway. The Revs. Orville Wintermute and Steve Edwards will officiate.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Staff Builders of Henderson.
Arrangements are by Blaylock Funeral Home.

Erica P. Copeland

HENDERSON -- Erica Perry Copeland, 30, of 24 S. Oakwood Lane, Henderson, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the University of North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill.
The family will be at the home. Arrangements are pending with Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Allen ‘Fats’ Harris

Atlanta, Ga. -- Allen “Fats” Harris, formerly of Henderson, died Dec. 21, 2000. He was retired from Roses Stores.
He is survived by his wife, Aline Knott Harris; two sisters, Julia Beckham and Agnes Shifflet, both of Baltimore; three sons, Robert, of Washington, NC, Mike, of Atlanta, Howard, of Atlanta; three grandchildren; Lisa, Jason, and Randy; and two step-grandchildren, Whitney and Carter.

Ethel Riordan Taylor

CONCORD -- Ethel Riordan Taylor, 85, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at NorthEast Medical Center in Concord. She was born Feb. 23, 1915, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Herbert W. Riordan and Carolyn Hack Riordan. She was married to Herbert B. Taylor for 56 years.
She was a legal secretary and for many years was employed by Perry, Kittrell and Blackburn in Henderson and Townsend and Todd in Lenoir.
She was of the Episcopalian faith. She was also a dog groomer for several years, and a dog lover all her life.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William M. Todd. Interment will be held in Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Hartsell Funeral Home at Concord.
Surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Saine of Mooresville; one son, Herb Taylor, and wife, Mary, of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Cecily Saine, Brittany and Adam Taylor.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Dory Baker; a brother, Herbert Riordan; and son-in-law, Ben Saine.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Ave., Charlotte, N.C. 28203.
Arrangements are by Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord.

Clarence Bullock

HENDERSON -- Mr. Clarence Bullock, 79, of 23 Frank Bullock Road, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Wright Funeral Home of Henderson.
Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Sandra Copeland and Mrs. Robin Fuller; four sons, C. Ervin Bullock, Tony Bullock, Kim Bullock and Terry Bullock; one brother, Mr. Frank Bullock Jr. of the home; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lenora J. Oxner

MANSON -- Lenora J. Oxner, 64, of Manson, died Dec. 25, 2000 at Maria Parham Hospital. Funeral services are incomplete at this time but will be announced later by Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton.

Codell S. Royster

OXFORD -- Codell S. Royster, 74, a resident of 8649 Robert Morgan Rd., died Dec. 24, 2000 at Granville Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are by Betts & Son Funeral Home, Inc.

Frank J. White

CREEDMOOR -- Frank J. White, 86, a resident of 1639 Hwy 50, Creedmoor died Dec. 22, 2000 at his home.
He was a native of Granville County.
Survivors include his wife, Fannie White of the home; one son, Alford White of Durham; two daughters, Rosa M. Taborn of Creedmoor and Ola M. Laurence of Franklinton; one brother, William White of Creedmoor, eight grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Union A.M.E. Zion Church, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Fuller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Betts & Son Funeral Home.

Erica P. Copeland

HENDERSON -- Erica Perry Copeland, 30, of 24 S. Oakwood Land, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at the U.N.C. Hospital in Chapel Hill. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Joseph Perry Jr. and Helen Greene Perry.
She was a graduate of Vance Senior High School and an employee of Revco-CVS Distribution.
She was a member of Grace Missionary Baptist Church where the funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. A.B. Morrison. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Glenn Copeland of the home; two daughters, Chytrell and Jazmine of the home; one son, Octavius, of the home; three sisters, Helen Richardson of Hollister, Kimberly Verser of Mary Esther, Fla., Pamela Glover of Virginia Beach, Va.; three brothers, Tony Perry and Terrance Perry, both of Kittrell, Michael Perry of Franklinton; maternal grandmother, Cecelia Greene of Franklinton; and one half-sister, Wanda Jackson of Henderson.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Rhem, Timothy Rhem, Robert Crudup, Larry Crudup, B.B. Perry and George Williams.
Floralbearers will be her co-workers.
Arrangements are by Garnes Funeral Services Inc.

Thomas Durham

HENDERSON -- Thomas Durham, 67, of 830 Dick Fain Road, in the Williamsboro community, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Guardian Care Nursing Home.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
Arrangements will be announced later by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.

Elder James E. Jenkins

HENDERSON -- Elder James Earnest Jenkins, 80, of 419 Sunrise Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. He was a native of West Virginia and the son of Charles and Irene Roberson Jenkins.
He lived in New York for 30 years and retired as a head chef.
Funeral services with African ritual will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service by Iyalode Asekunle-Coleman.
The body will be on view for that service.
Arrangements are by Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service.
