James Scott Brown
HENDERSON -- James Scott Brown, age 54, a resident of 178 Willow Oak Drive, died Thursday.
He was a native of Vance County and was the son of Joshua Scott and Doris Jackson Brown of Middleburg. He was a member of the Gospel Baptist Church where he was a Trustee and served as an Assistant Sunday School Teacher, and was a member of the Kerr Lake Home Builders Association, and a member of the National Guard Reserve. He was owner and operator of Jim’s Painting Service and co-owner of Vance Brides and Formals.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 2 p.m. at the Gospel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Greene, Jr. and the Rev. Edward Yancey. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Jamie P. Brown of the home; one stepdaughter, Leslie P. Dixon and husband J. Dalton Dixon of Henderson; one step-son, Ronald E. Pittman, Jr. of Henderson; one sister, Elaine B. Jennings of Wake Forest; one brother, Tom Brown of Marietta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Ashleigh Dixon and Brooke Dixon.
The family will receive friends Friday at the home at 178 Willow Oak Street.
Serving as active pall bearers will be John Tucker, Matt Comer, Eddie Jackson, Murphy Comer, Dan Herion, and Joe Tippett.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all deacons and trustees of Gospel Baptist Church.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Gospel Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Jerry Matthews, 3403 Cameron Drive, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

OXFORD -- James Bumpass, 77, of 5190 Charlie Stovall Road, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at the Oxford Manor Nursing Center.

OXFORD -- Richard Jeffers, of the Oxford Manor Nursing facility, formerly of Vance County, has died.

John Q. Parham
WARRENTON -- John Q. Parham, 67, of the Inez community, Warrenton, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 p.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Baptist Church in Inez. The Rev. Junious Debnam, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Jessie Parham of the home; four daughters, Vernita Terry of Warrenton, Camille Parham of Greensboro, Andrea Shannon of Mitchellville, Md., and Taloria Parham of Brunswick, Md.; one son, Ronnie Parham of Warrenton; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Martha Alston and Betty Elzie, both of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, Curtis Parham of Los Angeles, Calif.
The body will be on view today at Boyd’s Funeral Services Chapel until taken to th church two hours prior to the services.

William F. Plummer
GREENSBORO -- Mr. William Faulkner Plummer, died December 12, 2000. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2000, 11 a.m., at Hargett Memorial Chapel, Greensboro.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Mrs. Martha Plummer; a sister, Ms. Emma Ruth Plummer of Oxon Hill, Md.; a sister-in-law, Bernice Durham of Henderson, N.C.; and a brother-in-law, Sylvester Durham of Manson, N.C.
Alice Riggan
MACON -- Alice Rebecca Duncan Riggan, 90, formerly of Macon, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Warren Hills Nursing Center.
Arrangements will be announced later by Blaylock Funeral Home.
Lessie J. Riley
OXFORD -- Lessie Johnson Riley, 99, of 3775 Belltown Road, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at her home. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Cannon and Della Thomasson Johnson. She was the widow of Johnny Veston Riley.
She was a member of Tally Ho First Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tally Ho First Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Oliver. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Bertha R. West, Dorothy R. Suitt, and Linda R. Morris, all of Oxford; three sons, Clarence W. Riley and Ray M. Riley, both of Stem, and Roy E. Riley of Oxford; a sister, Lador J. Langley of Mebane; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and other times at the home.

Harold T. Short
HENDERSON -- Harold Taylor Short, age 61, a resident of 105 Park Avenue in Creedmoor, and a former resident of Rt. 2, Warrenton in the Afton Community, died Tuesday night at the Park Avenue Group Home. He was a native of Vance Co. and was the son of the late John B. and Madolia Abbott Short. He was a retired tobacco farmer and a former employee of Inco and the Creedmoor Candle Shop, and was a member of Brown’s Baptist Church in Warren County.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel

He is survived by three sisters, Helen S. Cartaker of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Clara Barker of
Henderson and Alma S. Short of Warrenton; two brothers, Williard P. Short of Warrenton,
and Luther Short of Reidsville.
The family will received friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 P. M. at the J. M. White
Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home of Alma Short, Rt. 2, Box 92,
Warrenton in the Afton Community.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Dwight Short, Wayne Short, Ronald Neal, Charlie
Barker, Thurston Barker, Walter Neal, and Wesley Harris.

Dazelle S. Williams
HENDERSON -- Dazelle Stokes Williams, 88, of 309 Arch St., died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital. She was a Franklin County native and the daughter of the late Major and Rosetta Wardrick Stokes.
She was the widow of Sandy Williams.
She was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church where the funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday by the Revs. J.T. Dunston and Carl Wardrick. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are five children, Lucille Williams of Henderson, Lenora Aldridge and Wilbert Williams of Paterson, N.J., Isabelle Holmon of Hackensack, N.J., and Bobby Williams of Raleigh; and numerous grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be nephews and friends of the family. Floralbearers will be nieces and friends of the family.

Jessie O. Davis
HENDERSON -- Jessie Olivia Davis, 86, of 1109 N. Pinkston St., died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Junious and Minerva Davis.
She was educated in the Vance County Public School System and was a graduate of the former Henderson Institute. She was also a graduate of the Hampton Institute in Virginia.
She was a member of Spring Street Baptist Church.
She was a retired employee of the City of New York as a clerical worker after 20 years of services with the Sanitation Department.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Garnes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Clarence J. Dale. Burial will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
There are no immediate survivors.
Pallbearers and floralbearers will be friends of the family.

David J. Hedgepeth
Henderson -- David Jennings Hedgepeth, age 58, a resident of 1300 N. Lynnbank Rd., died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000 at Duke University Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will announced by the J. M. White Funeral Home.
Richard Jeffers
OXFORD -- Richard Jeffers, 100, of the Oxford Manor Nursing facility, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Granville Medical Center. He was a Vance County native.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at Blacknall cemetery by the Rev. Mary R. Cannady.
Survivors include Elizabeth Bennett, Eva Bullock of Henderson, Rebecca Worley of Nashville, and William Bennett of Vance County.

Jimmy W. Marcinowski
CREEDMOOR -- Jimmy Wayne Marcinowski, 47, of 1528 Olive Circle, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, in an automobile accident.

Alice Riggan
MACON -- Alice Rebecca Duncan Riggan, 90, formerly of Macon, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Warren Hills Nursing Center. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Thomas Wyatt Duncan and Annie Jones Duncan. She was the widow of the Rev. Joe Riggan.
She was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Blaylock Funeral Home by the Revs. Frank Mullis and Fletcher Dickerson. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery in Macon.
Surviving are one daughter, Rebecca Riggan Baker of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Lizzie Tucker of Vaughan and Annie Bell Iden of Charlotte; two brothers, Wilton Duncan of Raleigh and Edgar Duncan of Charlotte; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
Memorials may be made to the Warren County Rescue Squad or the American Cancer Society.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Blaylock Funeral Home.

Irma B. Elliott
OXFORD -- Irma Burns Elliott, 79, of Brantwood Nursing Center, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Granville Medical Center.

Mary Elizabeth LaVerne Randolph Grady
WARRENTON -- Mary Elizabeth LaVerne Randolph Grady was born in Richmond, VA and departed this life December 14, 2000. Her parents, Ulysses and Melissa R. Randolph, instilled in her a strong sense of the importance of education and service to the community.
Mrs. Grady was a graduate of Armstrong High School in Richmond. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of New York University, where she earned both the Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in accounting and mathematics. Her work experience included teaching on the university and secondary school levels; accountant and tax consultant; and, director of occupational therapy.
It was during her tenure as director of occupational therapy at Central State Hospital in Petersburg, VA, that she met her husband, Charles Stewart Grady. They married the following year on May 24, 1959 in Indianapolis, IN. They are the parents of one daughter, Tana Annette Grady-Weliky.
A lifelong member and worker for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Mrs. Grady served as secretary and member of the board of directors of the Bergen County, NJ, Branch, NAACP, where she also worked as a youth council advisor, co-chairman of the 1989 souvenir journal committee, and attended the 1990 National NAACP Convention in Los Angeles, CA, as a voting delegate.
Mrs. Grady was a tireless and dedicated worker in a wide variety of volunteer community activities. She held life membership in the New Jersey Congress of Parents and Teachers, as well as the National PTA. She served as president of the Teaneck High School PTSA and was a two-term president of the Thomas Jefferson Middle School PTA.
Mrs. Grady was a member of the United States military Academy Review Board and the Educators Advisory Board of the 9th Congressional District of New Jersey. She also served as chairman of the Bergen County, N.J. Mental Health Board; advisory committee of the Clinical Oncology Program of Hackensack Medical Center; secretary of Catholic Community Services of Bergen County; treasurer of Teaneck Citizens for the Public Schools; member of the Teaneck Township advisory board on Community Relations; member of the textbook Advisory committee and the T. & E. Goals Committee of the Teaneck Board of Education.
Mrs. Grady worked as a Girl Scout Leaders of Brownie, Girl Scout, and Senior Girl Scout Troops. She was president of the Quettes of Nu Beta Beta Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Also, she served as co-chairman of the political action committee of 100 Black Women of New Jersey, Bergen-Passaic Chapter. Her recreational pursuits included playing Bridge.
Mrs. Grady was the elected committeewoman, Democratic party, District 16, Teaneck, N.J. for several years. A member of the Bergen County Democratic Club and the Democratic Women of Bergen County, she was active in county, state, and national election campaigns for a variety of candidates, including President Bill Clinton. She was a New Jersey voting delegate to the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco; and participated in the 1993 inaugural of President William Jefferson Clinton.
A gourmet cook, Mrs. Grady was cited as one of New Jersey’s four best amateur chefs in the feature article, “Home Cooking” by John Gottfried, in New Jersey Monthly magazine, November 1982 issue.
An Epsilon Beta Kappa Soror, Mrs. Grady and her husband lived in Teaneck, N.J. for 31 years prior to moving to Warrenton.
She is survived by her husband, Charles S. Grady; a daughter and son-in-law, Tana Annette Grady-Weliky and Michael Weliky of Pittsford, N.Y.; a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Wilbert V. Dance of Richmond, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Patricia Randolph of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Marion D. Coleman of Beauford, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 18, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Warrenton. Memorial contributions may be made to the LaVerne R. Grady Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 64, Warrenton, NC 27589. A wake for family and friends will be held on Sunday, December 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown’s Funeral Services, Inc., 310 E. Macon Street, Warrenton.
Mary L. Harris
HENDERSON -- Mary Lester Harris, age 78, a former resident of 905 Mabry’s Mill Road, died Saturday afternoon in a local nursing home.
She was a native of Warren County and was the daughter of the late Jake and Cora Lee Mansfield Lester, and the widow of Hulitt White Harris, Jr.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Pam Gilliam. Burial will follow in the Harris Family cemetery.
She is survived by two sisters, Janie L. Edwards and Lucy L. Hope both of Henderson; one brother, Jakie Lester of Stovall, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her nephews.

David J. Hedgepeth
HENDERSON -- David Jennings Hedgepeth, age 59, a resident of 1300 N. Lynnbank Rd., died Friday, December 15, 2000 at Duke University Medical Center.
He was a native of Vance County, and was the son of Elsie Edwards Hedgepeth of Henderson and the late Morris Hunt Hedgepeth.
He was a Pharmacy Technician at South Side Drug Store and was a member of Fuller Chapel United Church Of Christ.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Fuller Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Frank Sossamon and the Rev. Tammy Ayscue. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Betty Parrish Hedgepeth of the home; one son, David Alan Hedgepeth and wife Susan and children, Justin age six, Leah age two, and Logan four months; one daughter, Angela H. Averette and husband Curtis and children, James age four, and John six months; and one brother, Morris E. Hedgepeth all of Henderson.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the J.M. White Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the home on the Lynnbank Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Frank Cowan, Howard Cowan, Andy Hedgepeth, Harry Hedgepeth, Gerry Hedgepeth, and Billy Watkins.
Serving as honorary pall bearers will be Scott Parrish, Keith Parrish, Mike Parrish, Jeff Hedgepeth, Andy Parrish, and Brian Hedgepeth.
