Samuel R. Hawkins Jr.
Samuel R. Hawkins Jr., 76, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly May 31 at his home. He was born December 29, 1928, in Forsyth County to Samuel R. Hawkins Sr. and Mae Hawkins. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War. He was a retired captain with the Winston-Salem Fire Department and was a self-employed paint contractor. He was a member of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 289 and Shriners. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Daniels Hawkins, in 1997.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Bobby W. Hawkins and wife Cathy of Clemmons, Michael A. Hawkins of Winston-Salem and Kathy Hawkins Rayle and husband Ron of Advance; seven grandchildren, Brad, Renna, Graham, Kelly, Brooke, Meredith and Lauren; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Kelsey, Steele, Braydon and Connor; a brother, J.C. Hawkins of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Bonnie Baker of Mocksville.
Funeral services were held at Forsyth Park Baptist Church with Bill Teague officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park with Masonic rites.
Eugene Richardson
Eugene “Gene” Richardson, 77, of Winston-Salem died May 31 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born September 16, 1927, to Charlie and Lucy Hill Richardson. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 35 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army in the 4177th Medical Corp. He was a member of North Point Baptist Church and also enjoyed attending early worship service at Baltimore United Methodist Church with his friend, Mabel G. Carter. They then followed up at North Point Baptist Church for the 11 a.m. service. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Juanita Matthews Richardson; five sisters, Beatie Roberson, Gladys Meador, Glendola Hobson, Kathryn Welborn and Martha Llewellyn; and a brother, James “Buck” Richardson.
Surviving are a son, Mark Richardson and wife Debbie of Clemmons; a grandson, Andrew Richardson, and a granddaughter, Ashleigh Richardson, both of Clemmons; a very special friend, Mabel G. Carter of East Bend; and a brother, Norman Aaron Richardson of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Forbush Friends Meeting with Rev. Skip Furrow and Rev. Jack Stratas officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Harriet Blanche Hutchens Lackey
Harriet Blanche Hutchens Lackey, 86, of Yadkinville died May 31 at Willowbrook Health Care Centre. She was born August 6, 1918, in Yadkin County, a daughter of the late Nicholas Hutchens and the late Turney Hutchens. She was a retired inspector with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 35 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard H. Lackey, in 1981.
Surviving are her daughter, Sandra Lackey Davidson and husband Mitch of Winston-Salem; sisters Hazel Doub of Winston-Salem and Frances Allred of Yadkinville; brother Paul Hutchens of Yadkinville; niece Ruby Dorsett of Clemmons; and her best friend and caregiver, Leona Lineback.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Donald Lee Reich
Donald Lee Reich, 58, of Advance died June 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 9, 1946, on Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., to Joseph Henry and Hazel Jones Reich. He was a member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church and the manager of Winkler Bakery in Old Salem. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Williams Reich of the home; two daughters, Kelli Reich of the home and Kimberly Reich Keaton and husband Jeremy of Advance; his father, Joseph Henry Reich Sr. of Clemmons; a brother, Joseph Henry Reich Jr. and wife Judy of Advance; a sister, Penny Locke and husband Ned of Drakes Branch, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service was held at Salem Moravian Graveyard with Rev. Margaret Leinbach officiating.
Mildred Hester Sell
Mildred Hester Sell, 89, of Winston-Salem, widow of Irvin E. Sell, died June 2 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 12, 1915, in Forsyth County to Harvey and Alvah Seivers Hester. She lived all her life in Forsyth County and retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system as a food-service worker at Walkertown Middle School. She was a member of Oak Grove Moravian Church.
Surviving are two sons, Lester Sell and wife Dorothy of Clemmons and Ronnie Sell and wife Mary of Sparta; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Fulp of Walkertown.
Funeral services were held at Oak Grove Moravian Church with Rev. Matthew Allen officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard.
Barbara Flautz Morgan
Barbara Flautz Morgan, 69, of Winston-Salem died May 29. She was born July 31, 1935, in Ellwood City, Pa., to the late Paul and Grayce Harris Flautz. She was retired from the legal secretary profession and was actively involved in the lives of her family and in bridge and crocheting groups.
Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Panish and husband Steven of Lewisville and Patricia Vaccaro and husband Daniel of Alpharetta, Ga.; two sons, Paul Morgan and wife Nancy of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and David Morgan of Arnold, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Jeremy Morgan, Corey Morgan, Alexandria Vaccaro and Christopher Panish.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial followed in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Patsy Carolyn Parks Cheek
Patsy Carolyn Parks Cheek, 70, of Clemmons died June 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born February 7, 1935, in Forsyth County to “Daddy” Frank Eugene and Clara Howard Parks. She graduated from Clemmons High School, class of 1953. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Grace Bible Fellowship Class. She tirelessly devoted her life to caring for children. She worked in the nursery and preschool at Clemmons First Baptist Church for many years. She was active in Southwest Forsyth Little League, a den mother in Cub Scouts and a caregiver to many, many “adopted” children.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Bobby R. Cheek of the home; her children, Greg Cheek and wife Lois of Yadkinville, Mark Cheek and wife Penny of Raleigh and Lori Chappell and husband Gene of Clemmons; her grandchildren, Matt and Mandy Womble, Josh and Will Chappell and Andrew, Amy and Anna Cheek; honorary grandchildren, Brad Parks and Tracie Welch; her mother of Clemmons; a brother, Mike Parks and wife Virgie; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob and Mildred Warner, Donna and Hugh Cheek, Darrell and Dianne Cheek and JoAnn Cheek; and many special friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Will Toburen officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
William Henry Moser
William Henry “Bill” Moser, 85, a resident of Lewisville until moving to Country Village in 1979, died June 1 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born March 7, 1920, in Forsyth County to William Wesley Moser and Clevia Ann Styers Moser. He was raised on a farm where he acquired a work ethic that he carried throughout his life. He joined Lewisville United Methodist Church at an early age and had served the church in leadership positions including Sunday school superintendent. He was a 1937 graduate of Lewisville High School. He was a retired factory manager of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 40 years of service. He also was a member of Toastmasters of Winston-Salem. He served as a volunteer with the Lewisville Fire Department as long as his health permitted. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having been inducted in 1944. He was a member of the 1258th Combat Engineers and served in the European Theatre. He was the recipient of three battle stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a 35-year member of Salem Lodge No. 36 Independent Order of Odd Fellows and served as Past Noble Grand two terms. He was Chief Patriarch of Salem Encampment No. 20 and capt. ret. of Col. Bissent Canton No. 6. He also served on the board of Odd Fellows Home for the Elderly and as secretary until his death. Because of Mr. and Mrs. Moser’s generosity, the William H. Moser Family Paralegal Fund has been established at Forsyth Technical Community College. He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Ryan Moser, in 1998.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Hilda Ryan Moser; his daughter, Janet Moser Hancock and husband L.E. of Bermuda Run, and their children, Robert Hancock and Kelly Hancock; his son, William Thomas “Bill” Moser and wife Dianne, and their son, Kevin William Moser, of Pfafftown, and Ryan Thomas Moser and wife Jennie of Winston-Salem and their son, Thomas Cole Moser; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Sprinkle Moser of Lewisville and her daughter, Mellyn Moser Myers and husband Richard of Roanoke, Va., and their son, Jonathan Adam Albright.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Turner and Rev. James Faggart officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with services conducted by Salem Lodge No. 36.
John Thomas Shoaf
John Thomas Shoaf, 61, of Pfafftown died June 3 in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was born February 5, 1944, in Forsyth County to Henry J. Shoaf and Thelma R. Shoaf. He graduated from Southwest High School in Clemmons before serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 34 years of service. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Shoaf; and his wife, Carolyn Conrad Shoaf.
Surviving are his mother, Thelma Vernon of Winston-Salem; sons John Shoaf Jr. and wife Michelle of East Bend and Chad Shoaf of Winston-Salem; daughter Vandee Shoaf of Pfafftown; a grandson, Adam Shoaf of East Bend; sisters Patsy Dinkins of Pfafftown, Robbie Byrd of Winston-Salem and Sue Allen of Winston-Salem; and brothers Press Vernon of Texas, Ed Vernon of New Mexico, Jack Shoaf of Lexington, and Mark Vernon of Rural Hall.
A memorial service was held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church in Winston-Salem.
Herbert Craig Glasgow
Herbert Craig Glasgow, 85, of Winston-Salem died June 2. He was born January 21, 1920, in Forsyth County to Archa and Flossie Glasgow. He joined the U.S. Air Force, served during World War II and achieved the rank of master sergeant. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway after over 40 years of service. He was a faithful member of both Southminister Presbyterian Church and Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he served as Sunday school superintendent and deacon and also sang in the choir. He was an avid golfer and served 30 years on the steering committee of the Duke Power KAWI golf tournament. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Irene Crews Glasgow; as well as four brothers; and two sisters.
Surviving are four children, Dianne Smith and husband Albert of Winston-Salem, Jane Glasgow of Mobile, Ala., Jim Glasgow and wife Amy of Clemmons and Phyllis Bazzari abd husband Zack of Pittsboro; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Albert Smith officiating. Burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park.
Edward Eugene Satterfield
Edward Eugene Satterfield, 83, of Winston-Salem died June 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 15, 1921, in Forsyth County to Edward Eugene and Esther Lashmit Satterfield. He was a member of Waughtown Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer for over 30 years, as well as having been a deacon and the director of the Adult Program. He was a graduate of Clemmons High School and served his country during World War II, where he achieved the rank of master sergeant. He retired from Air Conditioning Corp. after 35 years as a much-valued employee. He then devoted his passions toward the three “G’s,” grandchildren, gardening and golf. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Norman, Frank, Ray, Bill and Max Satterfield.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Kathleen Cook Satterfield; a son, Phillip Edward Satterfield of Wilmington and Melodie Deacon; daughters Jane Pack and husband Durwood of Clemmons and Joan Charles and husband Ronnie of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Austin Pack and Barrett Pack and wife Christi, and Kristin and Taylor Charles; two sisters, Gladys Scott and Betty Spaugh and husband “Bub,” all of Winston-Salem; many nieces and nephews; and an abundance of friends.
A memorial service was held at Waughtown Baptist Church with Rev. Joseph McWethy officiating.
Kazie Lee Smiley
Kazie Lee Smiley, 83, of Winston-Salem died May 29 at her home. She was born June 24, 1921, in Rocky Mount, Va., to Norman Lewis and Mildred Pendleton Wimmer of Rocky Mount, Va. She was one of 13 children. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Blake Welton Smiley; two sons, Vann Welton Smiley and Troy Lester Smiley; a grandson, Michael Keith Smiley; seven brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are four daughters, Louise Smiley Potts of Advance, Brenda Smiley McNeill of Ellenboro, Debbie Smiley Greer and husband Michael of Clemmons and Rene Smiley Ferguson and husband Chris of Kernersville; three sons, Danny Smiley and wife Joy of Advance, Russell Smiley and wife Hazel of State Road and Jimmy Smiley and wife Teresa of Advance; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mammie Taylor and Eva Guilliam, both of Rocky Mount, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Wimmer of Venton, Va., and Ruby Wimmer of Rocky Mount, Va.; several nieces and nephews including a very special niece, Maryanne Craig of Roanoke, Va.; a special neighbor, Larry Vogler; and a brother and sister-in-law, Francis and Doris Smiley of Columbia, S.C.
Funeral services were held at Advance United Methodist Church with Rev. Harry D. Sammons officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Percy Oliver Lunsford
Percy Oliver Lunsford, 68, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Rural Hall, died June 3 after a seven-month battle with cancer. He was born December 4, 1936 in Forsyth County to Raleigh and Ethel Lunsford. He was retired from the Winston-Salem Journal after 35 years of service as a journeyman mailer of Local 133. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville. He was a true blue Carolina fan and loved to fish. He also helped make chicken pies to benefit the church’s building fund. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and a grandchild, Candice Lunsford.
Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Geraldine Thomas Lunsford of the home; his children, Kathy Hager and husband K.C. of Canton, Mich.; Manchell Tickle of Haw River, Melinda Vestal and husband David of Boonville, Patrick Stacy and wife Christine of Winston-Salem and Randy and Britt Lunsford of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Jake and Luke Hager; Savanah Coe, Rocky Tickle, Erika and Dalton Vestal, Bridgett, Nicole and Corey Stacy, Benjamin Lunsford and Daniel Charles, Kaleb Rose and Georgia Lunsford; and a brother, Harvey Lunsford and wife Jean of Lewisville.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville with Pastor Jon Rogers officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Anna Irene Lester
Anna Irene Lester, 64, of Clemmons, formerly from Iaeger, W.Va., died December 27 at home. She was a Christian, a wife, caring mother and nanny. She lived her life full of devotion, putting the needs of others before her own. She enjoyed 46 years of marriage with her surviving and devoted husband, Benny. She was the wind beneath the wings of her children, providing support and encouragement throughout their lives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Frankie Lester of Iaeger.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her children, Sherri Buxton and husband Mark of Clemmons, Terry Lester and wife Rachel of Iaeger, Debbie Blankenship and husband James of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Jaimey Blankenship, also of Tuscaloosa; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Ed Sears officiating.
Frances Ziglar Disher
Frances Ziglar Disher, 79, died December 26 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Care Center in Winston-Salem. She was born December 2, 1926, in Forsyth County to the late Zeb Lawrence and Lillie Grubbs Ziglar. She was a member of Oak Grove Moravian Church in Walkertown. She retired from Lucent Technologies (formerly Western Electric) after 33 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Otley, Fred, Otis and Wade Ziglar.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Billy T. Disher of Clemmons; two sons, Larry and Kent Disher, both of Naklua, Thailand; two granddaughters, Ashley Disher Spinks and husband Brad of Charlotte and Bailey Disher of Los Altos, Calif.; a grandson, Phil Disher of Atlanta, Ga.; a great-granddaughter, Savannah Parker Spinks of Charlotte; and other nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service was held at Oak Grove Moravian Church Graveyard with Pastor Matthew Allen officiating.
Donnie Vee Holyfield
Donnie Vee Holyfield, 93, of Greensboro died December 25 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was a native of Greensboro, the daughter of Jesse Boyd and Callie Patterson Gardner. She was employed in the Sample Department of Cone Mills Corp. where she retired after 20 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Proximity United Methodist Church and served as a Sunday school teacher in the Children’s Department, a member of the United Methodist Women and was a circle leader. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, J.B. Gardner Jr. Surviving are two daughters, Panthea Holyfield Briles of Lewisville and Rebecca Holyfield Metts and husband Kenneth of Atlanta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Carol B. Abercrombie and husband Jeff of Raleigh; Bradley D. Briles and wife Angie of Walkertown; Tamra Ann Metts of Atlanta; and Melissa M. Johnson of Statesboro, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren, Ashtin, Keade, Rierson and Annastin Johnson, Blake and Wesley Briles and Jackson Abercrombie; a sister, Maler G. Hanner; three brothers, Walter E. Gardner and wife Sybil, Thomas E. Gardner and Fred K. Gardner Sr. and wife Blanch; a sister-in-law, Ruth M. Gardner, all of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Proximity United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Lakeview Memorial Park.
Doris Marlow Delli Santi
Doris Marlow Delli Santi, 68, of Mocksville, widow of Alfred “Fritz” Delli Santi, died December 25. She was born June 22, 1937 in Long Beach, Ca. to John Francis and Maria Vetrano Marlow. A resident of North Carolina since 1998, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Surviving are two sons, Frederick Delli Santi of Lewisville and Michael Delli Santi and wife Peggy of Mocksville; a daughter-in-law, Marel Anne Delli Santi of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Amaris Vina Delli Santi, Lauren Lynn Delli Santi and Christopher William Delli Santi, all of Lewisville; and a sister, JoAnn Marie Marlow of Winston-Salem.
A funeral Mass was held at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemons with Father Brian Cook officiating. Entombment followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum.
Royce Gibson Ring
Royce Gibson Ring, 74, of Yadkinville died December 26 at his home. He was born May 2, 1931, in Yadkin County to the late Henry Evan and Sabina Baker Ring. He was a longtime employee of Sherwood Plaza Ace Hardware, was treasurer for the Homeowners Association in Westridge and was of the Baptist faith. He was in the U.S. Navy and served in Korea with the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Clyde Ring, Claude Ring, Treva Hutchens, Blanch Bean, Edith Ring and Ruth Sheffield.
Surviving are his three children, Dale Lynn Ring and wife Tammy of Kernersville; Karen Leigh (Becky) Ring of Yadkinville; and Darrell James Ring and wife Kristin of Yadkinville; five grandchildren, Jackson and Jordan Ring and Garrett, Conner and Sarah Ring; two sisters, Hazell Hartman and husband Lawrence of Clemmons, and Judy Davenport and husband Hal of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Earl Ring and wife Yvonne of King; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service was held at Gentry Family Chapel with military honors by Yadkin VFW Post 10346.
Claud Earl Crater
Claud Earl Crater of Winston-Salem died December 25. He was born in Forsyth County to the late George Earl and Fannie Cooper Crater. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a communications officer and was a retired insurance agent. He was a member and deacon of Northwood Baptist Church in Yadkinville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Orellia Abee Crater; a daughter, Bobbi Crater Brown; and a brother, Cooper Frank Crater.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Alice “Granny” Griffith Crater; two sons, Phillip Crater of Little River, S.C., and William “Bill” Crater of Lewisville; two sisters, Frances Gilbert of Stokesdale and Earleen Crawford and husband Alvin of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Bill Brown of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Bob Cornish of Bermuda Run; seven grandchildren, Robin Davis, Curtis Brown, Debbie Edwards, Chris Crater, Lori Crater, Mark Crater and Tammy Crater; two stepgrandchildren, Lori Lloyd and Stephen Cornish; five great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services wereheld at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Hubert “Bud” Wishon and Rev. Jonathan Barker officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Marshall Lee Jordan Sr.
Marshall Lee Jordan Sr., 66, of Hamptonville died December 23 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 28, 1939, to the late Herman and Stella McDaniel Jordan. He was a member of Trinity Christian Center in Elkin. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Emery Jordan. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Tulbert Jordan of the home; children Marshall “Chuck” Jordan Jr. of Hamptonville, Pat Jordan and wife Lee Anne of Winston-Salem, Anue Chambers and husband Darrell of Hamptonville, and Angela Rakes and husband Brent of Lewisville; foster daughter Tonya Allison and husband James of Hamptonville; and 14 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Gentry Family Chapel with Dr. John Abernathy, Rev. Shonnie Thompson, Rev Lenuel Lusk and Rev. Elwood Rakes officiating. Burial followed at St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Hood Eli Phelps Jr.
Hood Eli Phelps Jr., 85, of Winston-Salem died December 25 at Forsyth Medical Center. Born to the late Hood and Estella Mock Phelps Sr., he was a native and lifelong resident of Davidson County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during World War II and was a member of Hickory Grove AME Zion, where he formerly served on the trustee board, senior choir and usher board. He was also a retiree of Duke Power Co. after 41 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lovie Helen Oliver Phelps; and a son, Franklin Eli Phelps.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Bray of Clemmons; two sons, Raymond Phelps and wife Victoria and Albert Phelps, all of Clemmons; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Banner and husband John of Clemmons; a sister-in-law, Pauline Cloud of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Henry Thomas Oliver of Clemmons; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives including a devoted niece, Brenda Banner of Clemmons.
Funeral services wer held at Hickory Grove AME Zion Church with Rev. Marcus Farmer officiating and Rev. Bailey serving as eulogist. Burial followed in Wesley Chapel Cemetery.
