Velma A. Patton
HENDERSON — Velma Arlene Patton, 39, of 927 Patton Circle, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at her residence. She was a Vance County native and the daughter of Jessie Patton and Annie Parham Patton.
She attended the Vance County Public Schools and was a member of Stovall First Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Garnes Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Spotwell Burwell Sr. Burial will follow in the Stovall First Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her parents of the home, are one daughter, Jessica Patton of the home; one son, Sherman Terrell Archibald Jr. of the home; one brother, Larry Patton of the home.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers and floralbearers will be cousins.

Mary Satterwhite
OXFORD — Mary Belle Smith Satterwhite, 90, a former resident of Goshen Street, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Brian’s Center in Durham.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at New Light Baptist Church by the Rev. W.T. Ramey III. Burial will follow in the Greenwood family cemetery.
She is survived by one son, Eli Satterwhite Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Kaye Smith of Brooklyn; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors at the church immediately following the services.

Mamie F. Kearney
WARRENTON — Mamie Fitts Kearney, 94, of the Snow Hill community, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at Halifax Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Olive Grove Baptist Church in Littleton. The Rev. Charles Walton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Allen O’Neal Kearney of Kernersville; two step-daughters, Ruby Rooney of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mildred McCullogh of New Jersey; one stepson, Clifton Kearney of New York.
The body will be on view this morning at Boyd’s Funeral Services in Warrenton until taken to the church one hour prior to the services.

William T. Royster
OXFORD — William T. Royster, 63, of 2414 Lincoln St., Durham, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Oxford Manor Nursing Center. He was a Granville County native.
Surviving are four brothers, Chester Royster and George Royster Jr., both of Newark, N.J., Frank Royster and George Edward Royster, both of Henderson; one sister, Hattie Royster Lee of Henderson; foster daughter, Karen Curtis of Durham; and two foster grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Betts Funeral Home Chapel in Oxford, officiated by the Bishop Clinton Winston. Burial will follow in the Community Memorial Garden in Stem. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

WARRENTON — Andrew Leon Solomon, 39, of Warrenton, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at home. Arrangements will be announced later by R.H. Greene Funeral Home of Warrenton.
Howard Fisher Sr.
HENDERSON — Howard Fisher Sr., 67, of 2215 Spring Valley Road, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at U.N.C. Hospitals.
The family will be at the home.

Annie Bullock
HENDERSON — Annie Ruth Powell Bullock, 57, of 1312 Alpha St., died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Treyburn Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough. She was a Granville County native.
She was a graduate of Mary Potter High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville. She was the first Afro-American woman to receive a master’s degree from Duke University. She retired after 31 years as an educator with the Vance County Board of Education. She was serving her third term as a member of the Henderson City Council, the first Afro-American woman to be so honored. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and a member of Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Moriah A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Edd A. Bullock; one daughter and one son.
The family received visitors from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Wright Funeral Home in Henderson.
Howard Fisher Sr.
HENDERSON — Howard Fisher Sr., 67, of 2215 Spring Valley Road, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at the UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. He was the son of the late Eddie and Bessie Small Fisher.
He was educated in the Vance County Public Schools System and was a former employee with Waste Industries.
He was a member of Antioch United Church of Christ where he served as deacon and a member of the Mass, Gospel and Male Choir.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Antioch United Church of Christ by the Rev. John Durham. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Olivia B. Fisher; one son, Howard Fisher Jr. of Durham; one daughter, Patricia Fisher of Henderson; two sisters, Nannie Wilkins and Flozell Fisher, both of Henderson; two brothers, Woodrow Fisher of Creedmoor and Clarence Fisher of Virginia; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Garnes Funeral Chapel and all other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons. Floralbearers will be nieces. Honorary floralbearers will be deaconesses.

HENDERSON — Jordan Emanuel Hawkins, 19, of 940 David St., died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Coley Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Dale. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Akayla Hawkins of Henderson; his parents, Annie Hawkins of Henderson and Earnest Thomas of Butner; two sisters, Aretina Hawkins of the home and Avis Burchett of Henderson.

Barbara J. Marsh
HENDERSON — Barbara Jean Marsh, 50, of 1302 W. Andrews Ave., died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. She was a native of Bronx, N.Y.
She was a member of the United Evangelistic Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at United Evangelistic Church by Bishop Sandy T. Burks. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Letta Weathers and Lakeisha Marsh, both of the home; a father, Frank Woodson Kelly of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Cassandra Day of Los Angeles, Calif., and Pearl Day of Queens, N.Y.; and one brother, Ronald Day of Queens, N.Y.

Sylvia P. Bullock
WARRENTON — Sylvia Palmer Bullock, 68, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Nash General Hospital in Nash County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Macon. The Rev. Lawrence Harrison will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are one brother, Russell Palmer Jr. of Wise; three nieces; and two nephews.

WARREN COUNTY — Edward Plummer, 81, formerly of Warren County, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, in Hackensack, N.J.

W. Norman Ranes
HENDERSON — William Norman Ranes, 86, formerly of 505 Ivey St., Henderson, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, in a local nursing home.
He was a Vance County native and the son of the late Will and Eva Gupton Ranes. He was the widower of Mildred Fuller Ranes.
He was a retired truck driver with Roses Inc., where he was employed for approximately 20 years. He was a member of North Henderson Church of God.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Flowers Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Revs. Lawrence Leonhardt and Charles Ray Anderson. Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tonight at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Ray and Bonnie Ranes, 350 Wesley Drive, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Louis Mosley, Douglas Manning, Earl Reid, Bruce Gupton, Doug Leonhardt, Larry Leonhardt, Anthony McGhee and Buck Stallings.

Edna Rae Summerlin
MOUNT OLIVE — Mrs. Edna Rae Whaley Summerlin, 62, died Thursday, July 20, 2000.
Survivors include: one son, Donald Ray Summerlin, of Mount Olive; one daughter, Paula S. Malpass, of Mount Olive; her mother, Verie T. Whaley of Henderson; one brother, Jacob Whaley of Warrenton; three sisters, Scarlet Summerlin of Mount Olive, and Brenda Whaley and Penny Sue Hoff, both of Henderson; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel of the Tyndall Funeral home of Mount Olive. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rooty Branch Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday night at the funeral home, following the service.
Mary Wilson
HENDERSON — Mary Elizabeth Burt Wilson, 80, of 509 Adams St., died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late Irving Roy and Mary Alice Garnes Burt.
She was educated in the Vance County Elementary Schools and received her bachelor of science degree in education from Winston-Salem State University (Winston-Salem Teacher’s College) and pursued and received a M.A. degree in education at Columbia University, New York.
She taught in the Vance County Schools for 37 years, where she was a member of local, state and national professional organizations including National and Vance County Chapter, WSSU Alumni Association, National Educational Association, North Carolina Association of Education, Vance County Unit, Retired School Personnel. Civically, she was a charter member of the board of directors, Henderson Institute graduate and former Students Association; a member of the Trade Alumni Chapter, H.I.G. & F.A.; a charter member of the Urban-Suburban Garden Club.
She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church for 67 years in which she served as a Sunday school teacher and church clerk for over 25 years.
She was the widow of James E. Wilson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in Henderson by the Rev. Joseph L. Ratliff and Dr. Saint Paul Epps. Burial will follow in the Sunset Gardens cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Ruth Helen Wilson; and a sister, Ruth C. Burt.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Pallbearers will be deacons of the church and Lewis Brodie and Ernest Ramsey.
Floralbearers will be deaconesses of the church, Urban-Suburban Garden Club and The Triad Alumni Chapter.
Floral contributions will be accepted. Contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Shiloh Baptist Church, c/o Linda Crews, 635 College St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.

Amanda A. Braswell
HENDERSON — Amanda Alice “Mandy” Braswell, 21, of 377 Abbott Road, Henderson, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in Duke University Medical Center in Durham, after losing a long battle with leukemia.
Born in Durham County, she was a lifelong resident of Vance County and was the daughter of Marvin Leslie and Alice Guill Braswell of Henderson.
Miss Braswell was a 1997 graduate of Southern Vance High School. Prior to her illness, she was a student in information systems at Vance Granville Community College, and was an office assistant with Food Lion, Inc. in Franklinton. She was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held today, at 3 p.m., at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Lynwood Boyette and the Rev. Jim Hines. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her fiance, Jerry Wilson, of Oxford. She was preceded in death by a half-brother, David Meadows, who died in 1981.
The family received friends Monday evening, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Flowers Funeral Home, and will receive today, immediately following the service, in the church fellowship hall. All other times, they will be at the home on 377 Abbott Road.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Daniel Reynolds, Kevin Tart, Sam Watkins, Jeremy Phelps, Chad Whittemore, Tim Bell, Joshua Williams, and Ryan Tharrington. The Class of 1997 of Southern Vance High School will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Morris E. Brogden
CREEDMOOR — Morris Edward Brogden, 69, of 1520 Boyce Bridge Road, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Tom and Beulah Keith Brogden.
He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, and was retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Revs. Robert Oliver and R.R. Pulley. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Dollie Mitchell Brogden of the home; a son, Dennis E. Brogden of Youngsville; one granddaughter; five brothers, Thomas Brogden of Durham, Elmo Brogden of Hope Mills, Paul Brogden and Clyde Gene Brogden, both of Creedmoor and Joe E. Brogden of Wake Forest.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor and at other times at the home.

NEW YORK — Harry Cason, husband of Andrea Fitts Cason, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, in New York City.
Surviving are his wife, one son and two daughters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at Saint Luke’s AME Church in New York, N.Y.
