Jalen D. Henderson
HENDERSON — Jalen Deshon Henderson, infant son of Darrell Henderson and Angela Hargrove, died June 13, 2000, at Maria Parham Hospital.
Graveside services will be conducted on Sunday in Blacknall cemetery by Pastor Branch.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Damarqus Henderson; and grandparents, Silver Henderson and Roy Hargrove.

Edna M. Schertzinger
HENDERSON — Edna Milton Schertzinger, 83, of 1636 Crescent Drive, Henderson, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at her home.
A native of Covington, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Viola Hefler Milton. She was the widow of George Wayne Schertzinger.
Mrs. Schertzinger was a homemaker and an avid bridge player. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, at 11 a.m., in Sunset Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Ann Ritter.
Surviving are a son, Dr. George E. Schertzinger, and wife, Suzy, of Kinston, N.C.; six grandchildren, Jason Schertzinger, Molly Schertzinger, Logan Schertzinger, Landon Schertzinger, Michael Schertzinger, and Brooke Brantley; and a daughter-in-law, Pam Schertzinger Brantley, and husband Robert. She was preceded in death by a son, William Schertzinger.
The family will receive friends this afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the home on 1636 Crescent Drive.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Wilbert Hargrove Jr.
DURHAM — Wilbert “Mr. Buddy” Hargrove Jr., son of Christine Parker and the late Wilbert Hargrove Sr., died Thursday, June 15, 2000. He was a Vance County native.
At an early age, he joined the St. Andrews United Church of Christ and was a graduate of Vance Senior High School. He was an honorably discharged U.S. Marine Corp veteran.
For many years, he was employed with the Veterans Hospital in Durham and later was a self-employed auto mechanic.
In addition to his mother, Christine Parker of Henderson, surviving are his wife, Rosa Daye Hargrove of Durham; two sons, Christopher A. Hargrove and Curtis M. Hargrove, both of Durham; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Shelia Harrington, Betty Chavis and Laura Chavis; four brothers, Larry Harrington, Timothy Harrington, and Nathaniel Harrington, all of Henderson, and Johnnie Williams of Dorchester, Ma.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. today at Scarborough Hargett Funeral Chapel in Durham. The Pastor J.L. Alston will deliver the eulogy and Rev. C. Jerome Taylor will officiate, assisted by Rev. Nathaniel Wall. Interment will follow in the Elmwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. today at the chapel.
Pallbearers will be cousins.

Marvin R. Cash
CREEDMOOR — Marvin Ray Cash, 59, of 5122 Bahama Road, Bahama, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at the Little River Reservoir basin in Durham County. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late Marvin C. and Annie Hill Cash.
He was of the Baptist faith and was retired as an auto body repairman.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Cash Family cemetery, Hwy. 56 between Creedmoor and I-85 by Rev. Tommy Robertson.
Surviving are a daughter, Shannon Cash of Roxboro; a son, Marty Ray Cash of Roxboro; three brothers, Ronnie Cash of Hillsborough, Jeffrey Cash and Tim Cash, both of Durham; and one grandson.
Visitation will follow the graveside services.
Arrangements are by Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor.

HENDERSON — Olivia Bullock Cary, 59, of 460 Julia St., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Duke Medical Center.

HENDERSON — Lucy Adams Houghton, 79, formerly of Henderson, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Life Care Center of Lawrenceville, Ga.

Ernestine C. Hall
OXFORD — Ernestine Cooper Hall, 60, of 8597 Conway Elliott Road, died Saturday, June 17, 2000. She was a native of Jackson County, Ohio.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Carroll Glasscock. Burial will follow in Grassy Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are her sons, John L. Hall and George Allen Hall, both of Oxford; a brother, Robert Cooper of Oregon, Ohio; a sister, Rita Jones of Napoleon, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Thomas J. Campbell
OXFORD — Thomas Jackson Campbell, 77, of 2561 Smith Road, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at his home. He was a native of Jefferson County, Ala., and the son of the late John Williams and Alice Oden Campbell.
He was employed as a chemist technician with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Wilson Campbell; two daughters, Ramona C. Johnson of Oxford and Dawn C. Rose of Durham; two sons, Thomas C. Campbell and Johnathan Campbell, both of Oxford; two sisters, Bessie Johnson of Anderson, Ind., Lucille Compton of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother, Marion Campbell of Pine Ridge, Ala.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The body has been shipped to Gober Funeral Home in Arab, Ala., for funeral and burial arrangements.

Tashawn W. Lester
ROXBORO — Baby Tashawn Waddell Lester, four months old, of 915 Highview Church Road, Roxboro, died Thursday, June 15, 2000.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Vernon Hill Baptist Church in Person County with the Rev. James Worley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his parents, Henry and Ann Jones Lester; two brothers, Ricky Thorpe and Brandon Thorpe, both of Roxboro; maternal grandmother, Faye Majors of Oxford; paternal grandmother, Hinda Lester of Virgilina, Va.; maternal grandfather, Harvey Owen Majors Jr. of Roxboro; maternal great-grandfather, Harvey Majors Sr. of Roxboro.

Madge M. Avent
THOMASVILLE -- Mrs. Madge Moore Avent, daughter of the late John L. and Hattie R. Foster Moore, was born in Thomasville, NC on July 24, 1914. She departed this life on June 17, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare -- Greensboro Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past nine years. At an early age she joined the former St. John’s Methodist Church in Thomasville, NC where she was a faithful member for many years. She subsequently joined Union Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Sunday School as a teacher and also active in a variety of programs for the children until her health declined.
A master educator and scholar, Mrs. Avent attended the public schools of Columbus, Ohio, graduating from East High School in 1932. She received a B.A. degree in Biology from Bennett College with honors in 1936, and also received a M.A. degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1948. She did further study at a number of colleges and universities, taught adult education in Henderson, NC and achieved state certification in high school guidance counseling and the instruction of high school biology and history. After graduation, Mrs. Avent was employed by Bennett College and the public schools of North Carolina and Henderson, NC, specifically the former Henderson Institute. She retired in June of 1970.
She met the late James E. Avent, Sr., who predeceased her on June 7, 1996, and on June 9, 1951 they were joined in holy matrimony. This union was blessed with one child, James E. Avent, Jr. She leaves to mourn her son and daughter-in-law James, Jr. and Fayma, a grandson, Adam M. Avent, two granddaughters, Allison and Alexis Avent, brother and sister-in-law, Charles L. and Elizabeth Morrison of Greensboro, NC, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John L. and Christine Avent of Willingboro, NJ, sister-in-law, Mrs. Lula B. Wright, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family hour will be held on Friday, June 23 at 7 p.m. at Brown’s Funeral Home located at 909 East Market Street, Greensboro, NC and Mrs. Avent will be funeralized on Saturday, June 24 at 1 p.m. at Union Memorial United Methodist Church, 1012 East Lee Street, Greensboro, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Mrs. Avent are requested to be directed to either Bennett College, 900 East Washington Street, Greensboro, NC or Union Memorial United Methodist Church.

HENDERSON -- Olivia Bullock Cary, 59, of 460 Julia St., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Duke Medical Center. She was a Warren County native and the daughter of the late Charles and Kate Bullock.
She joined Oak Level United Church of Christ where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Leon White, assisted by the Rev. Mary Emma Evans. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Yvonne Cary and Nancy Cary, both of the home; one son, Richard Cary of the home; three sisters, Eva Belle Bullock and Helen Goode, both of Warren County, and Ruby Thomas of Henderson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Mary Davis-Royster Funeral Service and at other times at the residence.
The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.
Pallbearers will be Russell Boyd, Billy Bullock, Jack Bullock, Eugene Bullock, Moses Bullock and William Terry.

HENDERSON -- Lucy Adams Houghton, 79, formerly of Henderson, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Life Care Center of Lawrenceville, Ga.
She was a Vance County native and the daughter of the late George Wesley and Lillie Bryan Adams. She was the widow of Charles B. Houghton.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Elmwood cemetery by the Rev. Richard Brand.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Wesley Houghton of Duluth, Ga., and Bryan Barnett Houghton of Glenville; and two grandchildren.

OXFORD -- Susie Stovall Kittrell, 100, of 604 Granville St., died Monday, June 19, 2000, at her residence.

Earl W. Suitt
CREEDMOOR -- Earl Wayne Suitt, 57, of 506 North Durham Ave., died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Durham Regional Hospital. He was a Granville County native and the son of the late James Forrest and Alice Parrott Suitt.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Creedmoor and was a service station operator.
Memorial services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. today at the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor by the Rev. Dan Hill.
Surviving are a sister, Kay S. Turner of Creedmoor; two half-sisters, Donna S. Adcock of Henderson, Patricia S. Cornell of Durham; a stepbrother, Gene Lowery of Creedmoor; and a stepsister, Mae Hill of Durham.
Omission of flowers is requested and memorials may be made to the American Heart Fund, P.O. Box 2636, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.
Visitation will follow the memorial services on Wednesday evening at the Eakes Funeral Home.

Surviving are a daughter, Sylvia Gayle W. Collier of Henderson; a son, Don W. Walker of Sylva; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at Flowers Funeral Home. All other times, they will be at the home of Archie and Gayle Collier on Shepard Road in the Vicksboro community.
