Dorothy Jean Burton Flynn
Dorothy Jean Burton Flynn, 78, of Clemmons died March 1 after an extended illness. She was born December 13, 1928, in Forsyth County to the late Raymond and Ada Sarah Murphy Burton. She served Forsyth County schools for 28 years as a crossing guard at South Park Elementary, Konnoak and Easton Elementary Schools. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Barbara Burton Leatherwood; and a son-in-law, Tom Sweet.
Surviving are two daughters, Sheryl Spainhour of Clemmons, and Glenda Sweet of North Wilkesboro; a son, Thomas “Dan” Daniel Flynn Jr. of Clemmons; a grandson, Jeffrey Burton Spainhour and wife Megan of Bethlehem; and a brother, Paul Leonard Burton of Winston-Salem.
A celebration of life service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Farrington Willis Fore
Farrington Willis Fore, 78, of Winston-Salem died March 1 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 17, 1928, in Latta, S.C., to Tracy Dudley and Lyla Hays Fore. He worked in the construction department of Quality Oil Co. from 1964 until his retirement in 1993. He was a faithful member of Griffith Baptist Church as long as his health allowed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Durwood E. Fore, and his wife of 56 years, Virginia A. Fore.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra F. Lindley and husband Henry of Lexington; a son, Richard F. Fore and his wife Shirley of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Maggie C. Lindley, Maria F. Stimson, Richard D. Fore and Sarah E. Fore; and four great-grandchildren, Nicholas G. Fore, Hannah E. Fore, Cody D. Stimson and Kaitlyn D. Stimson.
A graveside service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Tony Brown officiating.

David L. Padgett
David L. Padgett, 84, of Fayetteville died in Alterra Clare Bridge in Winston-Salem on February 28. He was born on April 7, 1922, to George Washington and Mary Bruner Padgett in Saluda, S.C. He came to Fayetteville during World War II to head the Army hospital laboratory system, where he met his wife of 52 years, Betty Brewer Padgett. They were charter members of Haymount United Methodist Church, where he served for many years as a youth program leader, member of the board of trustees and hands-on caretaker. After Betty’s death in 1995, he put his skills to work in Haymount’s Habitat for Humanity program. He was a frequent guest speaker at Fayetteville city council meetings and often his sage advice could found on the Fayetteville Observer’s editorial page. He worked as a display manager for Sears, Roebuck and Co. for nearly 40 years and then participated in Sears’ retiree activities until his stroke in 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his brother, Gordon Padgett; and Maybell Padgett Terry.
Surviving are an aunt, Wanda Shook Cain of Fayetteville; a son, David E. Padgett, Ph.D, of Wilmington; daughters, Ellen Lee and husband Ronnie of Lewisville and Mary Ann Largent of Chapel Hill; his grandchildren, Douglas Largent and wife Nancy, Stacey Burns, Patrick Padgett and wife Lee, Ginny Teer and husband Michael, Ron Lee Jr., Cayce Lee, Samuel David Lee, Dennis Lee, Amy Lee and Jackie Lee; a great-granddaughter, Emerson Elizabeth Teer, and a great-grandson due in July.
A memorial service was held at Haymount United Methodist Church in Fayetteville.

Stanley E. Binkley
Stanley E. Binkley, 58, died March 2. He was born February 7, 1949 to Clifton and Martha Binkley, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel Binkley; his two sons, Stephen and Christopher; a brother, John; a sister, Linda; his uncle, Bill; and other family members.
A memorial service was held at Baux Mountain Baptist Church in Walkertown with Pastor Mark Smith and Rev. Bob Jeune officiating.

Gene F. Smith Sr.
Gene F. Smith Sr., 86, of Winston-Salem died March 3 at Forsyth Medical Center after a long illness. He was born November 6, 1920, to the late Parmer A. and Nettie Dellinger Smith of Vale. He was retired from Smith Texaco and owned and operated Smith Fuel Oil Co. on Waughtown Street for 45 years. He was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He attended Lexwin Baptist Church in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are his wife, Sue Farmer Hamersly Smith of the home; four daughters, Patricia Fishel and husband Roger of Winston-Salem, Paulette Shaffer and husband Michael of Winston-Salem, Peggy Pittman and husband Richard of Hildebran and Mary Smith; three sons, Palmer Smith and wife Rita of Clemmons, Bucky Smith and wife Erin of Lexington and Gene Smith Jr. of Walnut Cove; a brother, H. Everett Smith of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Bryte Hudgins, Helen Yoder and Bronnie Mae Bowman, all of Vale; six stepchildren; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Danny Hauser officiating. Burial followed in Parklawn Memorial Park with military rites by the V.F.W. Memorial Honor Guard.

Janie C. Donaldson
Janie C. Donaldson, 71, of Winston-Salem died March 3 following a sudden illness. She was born on February 7, 1936 to the late J.C. and Ina Mae Collette of Mocksville. She retired from R.J. Reynolds High School after 35 years of teaching with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Ellis T. Donaldson: a son, Alan Donaldson and wife Billie of Lewisville; a daughter, Denise D. Nelson and husband Joe of Vale; four grandchildren, Emily and Jill Donaldson and Devin and Jake Nelson; stepgrandchildren, Ashley Ward and husband Cass and their children Owen and Oliver, and Mary Sullivan and husband Tony and their children David and Riley; and a sister, Frances Dunn and husband Dr. Grady Dunn of Winston-Salem.
A memorial service was held at Robin Hood Road Baptist Church with Rev. John Hackworth officiating.

James Gilbert McCuiston
James Gilbert McCuiston, 76, of Midway died March 2 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1930, Winston-Salem to James Gilbert McCuiston and Julia Walschlager McCuiston. He had worked at Western Electric as a supervisor until he retired. He then owned and ran a bakery in Welcome on Old Highway 52 for 15 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Cynthia Kiger of Germanton and Denise Lawrence of Lewisville; a son, Daniel McCuiston of Wickcliffe, Ky., two granddaughters, Sonsera Kiger and Bonnie Lawrence; a grandson, Ian Lawrence; and a sister, Hilda Guess of Hendersonville, Tenn.
Funeral services were held at Friedland Moravian Church.

Ruby Shelton Davis
Ruby Shelton Davis, 83, of Pfafftown died March 4. She was born in Forsyth County on June 5, 1923, to Barnett Winfield and Emma Lineback Shelton. She was a dedicated member of Enon Baptist Church, where she had served as a Sunday school teacher. She also loved taking trips with the Jolly Friends of Enon Baptist Church. She loved growing flowers, and her beautiful yard was enjoyed by many. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Arnold Davis; a brother, Elmer Shelton; and a sister, Lola Caudle.
Surviving are her husband of 64 years, Hilary L. Davis of the home; two daughters, Ruby Griffin and husband Jerry of Walnut Cove and Doris Yokeley of East Bend; four sons, Allen Davis and wife Geraldine of Star, David Davis and wife Helen of Pinnacle, Roger Davis and wife Geneva of East Bend and Johnny Davis and wife Sharon of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Elmore and Rev. Edgar Whitlock officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

James Hutchens
James “Max” Hutchens, 68, of Kernersville died March 5 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Kernersville on Feb. 8, 1939, to the late L.R. Hutchens and Pearl Nelson Hutchens. Heserved three years with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg. He retired from the Transportation Division of the J.C. Penney Co. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Kernersville Moose, where he had many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, James Max Hutchens Jr.; a sister, Sue Hutchens Mickey and a nephew, Terry Hutchens.
Surviving are his daughter and caregiver, Karen Michelle DeBusk and husband Todd; grandson Adam of Davidson County; brother C.L. Hutchens and wife Ann of Lewisville; sister Triba Hutchens Strader and husband Lane of Greensboro; brother-in-law Richard A. Mickey of Kernersville; nieces Jan Richardson of Columbia, S.C., Linda Mason and husband Charles of Charlotte, Tammie Spear and husband Bruce of Kernersville, Robyn Ferris and husband Dennis of Kernersville; nephew Randy Mickey of Hamlet; great-nieces, Cha and Candy Mickey, Amanda Ferris, Sarah Spear; and great-nephews Jamie Richardson, R.C. Mickey, Dylan Ferris, Ryan Mason and Landon Mason.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ellis Rouse officiating.

Elizabeth Ann Worden
Elizabeth Ann Worden of Greenville died March 4 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Carolyn Myers Worden and Randy and Deborah R. Worden. She was employed by Target of Greenville. She was a confirmed and lifelong member of St. James United Methodist Church of Tarboro. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Hal and Inez Myers of Clemmons; paternal grandparents, Waite and Betty Worden of East Haven, Vt., and two uncles, Bob Long of Advance and Sam Tillotson of Fayetteville.
Surviving are her parents and two half-sisters, Ridgley W. Hathaway and Chelsey Worden, both of Tarboro; and her aunts and uncle, Shirley M. Long of Advance, Kay Tillotson of Raleigh and Jerry and Geri Styers of Boone.
A memorial service was held at St. James United Methodist Church in Tarboro with Rev. Jim Wilson and Rev. Caswell Shaw officiating.

Lewis Edwin Hubbard
Lewis Edwin Hubbard, 82, of Winston-Salem, passed from this life Saturday evening in the Palliative Care Unit of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Emma; four sisters, Betty Kate Carroll of Fayetteville, Orretta Honeycutt of Godwin, Florence Dowd (and husband Bill) of Fayetteville, and Janice Mobley of Stedman; three children, Lewis E. Hubbard, Jr. (and wife Diane) of Advance, Bruce R. Hubbard (and wife Marsie) of Winston-Salem, and Beverly H. Godfrey (and husband Brant) of Clemmons; six grandchildren, William A. Hubbard (and wife Heather), Matthew J. Hubbard (and wife Meghan), Mary H. Lischke (and husband Jonathan), Elizabeth R. Hubbard, Brant H. Godfrey, Jr., and John-Lewis H. Godfrey; and three great-grandchildren, Haley M. Hubbard, Joshua C. Hubbard, and Sydney M. Hubbard.
Lewis was born February 11, 1926 in Stedman, North Carolina on the family farm the son of Willie James and Carrie Williams Hubbard, the seventh of twelve children. After his graduation from Stedman High School in 1942, Lewis married the former Emma Cleveland Brown, and the couple embarked on a lifetime partnership of entrepreneurship and service. After brief stints farming and working with the Veterans Administration, Lewis moved to Winston-Salem in 1946 and founded Hubbard Real Estate Company. He worked part-time at the Zinzendorf Hotel for the use of a desk and a telephone. The real estate industry became Lewis’s second great love, and he engaged himself in every aspect. Over the following fifty-eight years, Lewis sought associates and partners who possessed integrity, ambition, and ability. He established firms engaged in real estate brokerage, residential and commercial land development, insurance, construction, construction-lending, property management and building supplies throughout the area.
Lewis’s personal, civic and professional commitments have included service on the boards of trustees of Fairview Moravian Church and Salemtowne Retirement Community and the Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; as a director of the city boards of North Carolina National Bank and Lexington State Bank, the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, the North Carolina Association of Realtors, the Salvation Army, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Lewis was a past president of the Winston-Salem Board of Realtors and the Multiple Listing Service. He was honored as the Realtor of the Year, an inaugural member of the Thomas A. Lambe Hall of Fame, recipient of the A.R. Tuttle Memorial Award, and of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Winston-Salem Homebuilders Association. He also served on the Board of Presidential Advisors of Campbell University, which honored him on May 13, 1996 as the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Lewis’s dear friend and President of the University, Dr. Norman Wiggins, presented the honor with these words: “Algernon Sydney Sullivan was described by a friend as one who reached out both hands in constant helpfulness to men. It is therefore fitting and with great pride that Campbell University bestows the 1996 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award upon a man who exemplifies the same high ideals, Lewis E. Hubbard.”
Well done, my son; come home now to the Lord.
The family will receive friends at Salem Funeral and Cremation Services on South Main Street Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
A funeral service will be held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road Wednesday afternoon at 2:00, followed by a graveside service at Salem Moravian Graveyard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairview Moravian Church, 6550 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, or to the Salvation Army, 130-A Stratford Court, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

William Revere Kennedy
Mr. William Revere Kennedy, 83, went to Heaven Friday, April 4, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 6, 1924, in Surry County to the late John and Jeannette Woodle Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy was a member of Worship Assembly. Preceding him in death was Nellie Holcomb Kennedy. Surviving are five sons, Bill, Jerry, Bruce, Tony and Danny Kennedy; daughter Mary Belle Spach; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred and Lee Byrd Kennedy; and a sister, Rodena Macemore. A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 7, at State Road Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with Mr. Bill Teague officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to State Road Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Lou Hampton, 1384 CC Camp Road, Elkin, NC 28621.

Walter Lee Hobbs Jr
On Monday, March 31, 2008, Mr. Walter Lee Hobbs Jr. passed away at Forsyth Medical Center. Walter was born Oct. 16, 1919, in Columbus County to the late Walter Lee Hobbs Sr. and Olla C. Hobbs. Walter enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He served in World War II, fighting in the Solomon Islands, receiving a Purple Heart for his heroic efforts during combat. After the war, Walter graduated from N.C. State University. He became an agricultural expert, living in South America. Later in life, he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as the county executive director for Forsyth County. Surviving Mr. Hobbs are his wife, Lula Paul Hobbs of the home; and a son, David F. Hobbs, and wife Karin of Clemmons. Full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., at a later date. Vogler and Sons Funeral Home in Clemmons is assisting the Hobbs family.

Alberta Ratledge Giles
Alberta “Bert” Ratledge Giles, 77, of Clemmons passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008. She was preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband of 47 years, Jay Giles. She was born to the late Spurgeon and Biddie Miles Ratledge on Jan. 11, 1931, in Forsyth County. She was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church. She is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, sons Everette Giles (Pat) of Merritt Island, Fla., and Alan Giles (Karen) of Winston-Salem; daughter Elease Giles of Clemmons; grandchildren Candice Alridge, Jeremy Giles and Kelly Giles; great-granddaughter Rachel Alridge; brother Alvin Ratledge (Marcie) of Advance; sister Shirley Sanservino (Fabio) of Inverness, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Vogler and Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road, with the Rev. Dan Wilkers officiating. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The Giles family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, April 8, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road. In addition to being loved and a loving Christian, wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend, she was a talented artist and a successful realtor. Robert Marshall Jones Jr.
Robert Marshall Jones Jr., 74, of Clemmons, died November 19 at his home. He was born March 18, 1928 to Robert Marshall Jones Sr. and Blanche Grimes Jones. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He was retired from Bell South with 40 years of service and perfect attendance, and he was also an avid outdoorsman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Christy L. Allen.
Surviving are his his wife of 54 years, Pauline Roberts Jones of the home; a daughter, Marsha Rodman and husband Ronald of Clemmons; a brother, William B. Jones and wife Ruby of Winston-Salem; a sister, Betty J. Byrd and husband Pete of Maudlin, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Chaplain Randy Hillman officiating.

Cecil Alexander Turner Jr.
Cecil Alexander Turner Jr., 60, of Lewisville died November 19 at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. He was born March 13, 1942 in Chester County, S.C. to Cecil Alexander Turner and Dorothy Ernandez Turner. He was a member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church and served in the U.S. Navy. He had retired from Piedmont Aviation Credit Union and was a former member of the James B. Green Masonic Lodge No. 735 in Raleigh.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Jordan Turner of the home; a son, Lex Turner and wife Robyn of Greenville; a brother, Robert Turner of Murrells Inlet, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Caroline and Alex Turner.
Funeral services were held at Shallowford Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lucy Turner officiating, and burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Clara Massey Burgess
Clara Massey Burgess, 71, of Winston-Salaem died November 19 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late David and Esther Massey, and the wife of the late Marion (Sonny) Burgess. She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Senior Missionary Society and the Ladies Working Society. She was a retired employee of the Old Lexington Road Plant of AT&T Inc.
Surviving are three aunts, Hazel P. Bailey of Winston-Salem, Mattie Bell Dudley of Washington, D.C. and Evagelist Ruth P. Calhoun of Atlanta, Ga.; several devoted cousins, Doris Smith and Betty Ijames, both of Clemmons, Pat Harris of Philadelphia, Pa., Willie L. (Junior) Bailey and Garland S. Brice, both of Winston-Salem, Roslyn B. Allen of Cary, and Nellie (Bummie) Moses and Matthew Moses, both of Atlanta, Ga.; special friends Doreatha Owens, Romaine Hollis, Frances Whigfall, Kay Montgomery and Clarence and Josephine Anderson, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Lewis R. Crawford officiating.

Harold Dean Campbell
Harold Dean Campbell, 76, of Pfafftown died suddenly November 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. Born on December 15, 1925 in Indiana, he was employed 31 years with Indiana Bell and 10 years with AT&T on Reynolda Road as a technical writer. He was a supervisor in New Castle, Ind. before moving to North Carolina. A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Campbell, and two nephews.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Ruth Reed Campbell; two sons, Kenneth D. Campbell of Naperville, Ill., and Mark L. Campbell and wife Dianne of Pfafftown; two grandchildren, Alison Campbell and Benjamin Campbell; two sisters, Carol Bisel of San Diego, Ca., and Sarah Hayden of Muncie, Ind.; two brothers, Carl Campbell of Eaton, Ill., and Billy Campbell of Glendale, Ariz.; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the Mausoleum Chapel of Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Eugene Dean, pastor of Brookstown United Methodist Church, officiating.

Frank Raymond Smith III
Frank Raymond Smith III, 57, of Clemmons, died November 21 at his home. He was born October 15, 1945 in Wilmington to Frank Raymond Smith Jr. and Helen Mae Barrier Smith. He was the owner of Carolina Marble and Tile and was on the board of directors of the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association. He was a member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church and the Rotary Club of Clemmons.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Sutphin Smith of the home; two sons, Mark L. Smith of Advance and Matt M. Smith of the home; two brothers, Jimmy Smith of Raleigh and Dick Smith of Woolwine, Va.; and a sister, Kathy Smith of Winston-Salem.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Dr. William Hoyle officiating.

Rebecca Turner Williams
Rebecca Turner Williams, 86, of Lewisville died November 23 at her home. She was born June 14, 1916 in Mobile, Ala. to Herbert Clarke Turner and Nina Agness Harris Turner. She worked in the bond department at First National Bank of Mobile until she met her future husband, Lanier Williams, and they were married in 1946. In 1960 they mved to Short Hills, N.J., and in 1970 they moved to Forsyth County, joining the Williams family in Lewisville. She was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church for many years. She was a life-master judge of flowers and studied landscape architecture at the University of Georgia. She was also the co-editor of the Williams family book of genealogy entitled 300 Years of Leadership of America.
Surviving are husband, Lanier Williams of the home; and a son, Clarke Williams of Lewisville.
A private graveside service was held at the family graveyard, Panther Creek, in Lewisville with Rev. Perry Mobley officiating.
