Mr. Melrose Worth Conner

Mr. Melrose Worth Conner, 87, of Lake Lure, died, Friday, October 25, 2002. Born in Rutherford County, September 17, 1915, he was a son of the late John Conner and Lilie Burgess Conner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Conner was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Estelle Epley Conner, two sisters and nine brothers. He was a life-long member of Montford Cove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School and was an R.A. Leader. An avid deer hunter and farmer, he was a member of numerous Wildlife Conservations. Mr. Cooper was retired from Drexel Furniture and was also a Saw Mill Operator, and a independent Logger. Mr. Conner was past President of the White House Community Club.

Mr. Conner is survived by one daughter, Jean Wilson, and husband, Floyd, of Marion; one sister, Mary Ridley, of Lake Lure, NC;

three granddaughters, Gail Bailey, and husband, Steve and Rhonda Messer, all of Marion and Linda Beam, and husband, Jay, of Nebo;

four great grandchildren, Chad Bailey, Jake Beam, Nikki Beam and Sydney Messer;

two very special nephews, Duval and Doyle Parker, that were of much blessing to Melrose and his family; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00PM, Monday, October 28, 2002, at the Montford Cove Baptist Church with the Reverends Ray Holland and Marty Conner officiating. Interment will follow at the Montford Cove Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation for the Conner family will be 4:00PM-6:00PM, Sunday, October 27, 2002, at Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mr. Albert Frederick Mehl

Mr. Albert Frederick Mehl, 86, of Grace Ridge Retirement Community, died very peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2003 at his residence. He was born May 24, 1917 in Pittsburgh, PA and was the son of the late Jacob and Rose Lutz Mehl.

Mr. Mehl was a graduate of Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and a graduate in Graphic Arts. In 1945, he began as a dorm supervisor at the North Carolina School for the Deaf and later became a classroom teacher for the learning disabled children in the high school. His teachings also included wood shop and print shop. In the print shop. He and others began the Bugler newspaper for the deaf where he was a writer and circulation manager.

Following his retirement in 1982, he continued as a substitute teacher fot 15 years and volunteered his time for any and all school events.

Among numerous awards, he received the Jack Callaghan Cornerstone Award on May 8, 1997 awarded by the Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont.

Mr. Mehl was well traveled having visited all 7 continents including each state in the U.S. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club where he presented his very own travel logs

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Sue Bauer and Leila Mehl.

He is survived by his loving family. Brother, Daniel John Mehl and wife, Esther, of Lake City, Florida; nephew, Danny Mehl of Lake City; niece, Carol Jewett of Lake City; his best friend, Bernice Tuttle of Morganton and all the many lives touched by him at the North Carolina School for the Deaf.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Mehl will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, July 20, 2003 at the North Morganton United Methodist Church with Reverend Connie King presiding.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Albert F. Mehl Memorial Fund, c/o The United Methodist Deaf Ministry, P O Box 9152, Morganton, NC 28680

Mr. George Benjamin Scott

Mr. George Benjamin Scott, 78, of Nebo, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 10, 2003, while at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Asheville.

Born May 15, 1925, in McDowell County, he was a son of the late James Arthur Scott and Hannah Elizabeth Tate Scott. In addition to his parents, Mr. Scott was also preceded in death by two brothers, James Bulo & James Willie Scott and a grandson, Atwan Hall.

Mr. Scott retired from Clinchfield Cotton Mill where he worked in the Opening Room. He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the US Army.

Mr. Scott will be remembered by his family as a friendly and cheerful man that was a loving father to all of his family and was a good provider. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Kathleen Murphy Scott, of the home; four sons, Thomas Ezell Scott, of Marion, George Benjamin Scott, Jr., of Austin, TX, Bobby Lee Scott, and wife Anita Lucille, of Nebo, Shuford Leon Scott, and wife Caroline, of Austin, TX; two daughters, Teresa Mae Rutherford, of Nebo and Cora Elizabeth Cole, and husband Alfred Lee, of Nebo; one brother, Billy Eugene Scott, of Nebo; one sister, Lorrine Scott, of Nebo; also surviving are fifteen grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Scott will be held 2:00PM, Monday, December 15, 2003 in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverend Barbara Farley officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion.

Mrs. Willie Mae Clontz Hennessee

Glen Alpine -- Mrs. Willie Mae Clontz Hennessee, 90, of Glen Alpine, died Tuesday, March 30th at Grace Heights Nursing Center.

She was born in McDowell County on June 27, 1913 and was daughter of the late William Lee Clontz and Bertha Parker Clontz.

Also preceding her in death is her husband, Harold C. Hennessee; brothers, Albert Clontz, Arthur Clontz and George Clontz, sisters; Grace Jones and Edith Clontz.

She is survived by her son, William Connor Hennessee of Glen Alpine; sisters, Beva Lusk of Asheville, Sue Reynolds of Nebo; sisters-in-law, Pearl Clontz of Nebo and Virginia Clontz of Marion; a very special friend, Maudie Blevins and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 2nd at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church with the Reverends Frank Gordon and Tom Beall officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Glen Alpine Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary 1 hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to the Glen Alpine United Methodist Church Building Fund, P O Box 576, Glen Alpine, NC 28628.

Ethel Odell Monroe

Ethel Odell Monroe, 79, of Old Fort, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at McDowell Hospital. Born April 4, 1925, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Harvey S. Moore and Ada Belle Ledford Moore. She was a charter member of Lackey Town Baptist Church. Ethel was preceded in death by her brothers, Roy Moore, Earl Moore, and Ray Moore.

Surviving are her beloved husband, Charles Monroe; one son, Wayne Monroe and wife, Susan, of Old Fort; two daughters, Charlotte Greer and husband, John, Karen Lunsford and husband, Doug, both of Old Fort; three brothers, Ralph Moore and Dean Moore, of Old Fort, and Glenn Moore, of Marion; two sisters, Edna Ricker, of Old Fort and Ruth Coward, of Marion; eight grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Monroe will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 19, 2005, at Lackey Town Baptist Church in Old Fort, with Reverends Rick Griffin and James Walker officiating. . Interment will follow at Cherry Spring’s Memorial Park. Mrs. Monroe will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort. At all other times, the family will be at the home of Karen Lunsford – 632 Roy Moore Rd. – Old Fort, NC. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to Lackey Town Baptist Church.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort.

Mrs. Julia Jane Devenport

Mrs. Julia Jane Devenport, 78, of Old Fort, died, Friday, July 1, 2005, at her residence. A Memorial Services will be held 11:00AM, Tuesday, July 5, 2005, in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort, with Mr. Will Winchester officiating.

Arrangements are in the care of Kirksey Funeral Home, Old Fort.

Mr. Frederick “Fred “ Gray Lane

Mr. Frederick “Fred “ Gray Lane, 99, of 216 Fox Street, Morganton died peacefully Saturday, October 26, 2002 at Grace Hospital surrounded by his family.

Mr. Lane was born April 14, 1903 in Burke County to the late Charles Washington and Belle Boyd Turner Lane. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Holder Lane; brothers Charles Neal Lane, Stephen “ Bub” Leroy Lane Sr., Herbert Lane Sr.; sisters Belle Landis, Mary Matilda Lane, Louise Lane, Ruth Winkler and nephew Charles Lane.

Mr. Lane graduated from Morganton High School and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1925. Up until his death, he was an avid sports enthusiast, closely following the Tarheels in basketball and football, always able to analyze the strategies of their coaches and the best attributes of each player. As a child, he played tennis and later coached the tennis team at Morganton High School in the 1920’s and early 30’s.

Widely known as an educator, Mr. Lane entered the teaching profession shortly after his graduation. He began his career at Shortoff School and followed thereafter at Morganton and Salem High Schools. He stayed in the education field for forty years, serving not only as a teacher, but also as a principal and coach, filling the needs of youngsters in Caldwell, Alexander and Catawba Counties. To many of his formers students, he was affectionately came to be called “Bear Lane” a name that can still be heard among those in this area, who remember how he instilled in them the pride and virtue that came with knowledge.

It was, while he was at the Shortoff School, that he became acquainted with Ettie Ruth Holder, whom would later become his bride in January 1926, and the love if his life. They taught together and traveled throughout the United States until she was stricken with a debilitating illness through which he loving cared until her death in 1978.

Mr. Lane was the benefactor of many charities and organizations. His unselfish gestures of kindness touched the lives of numerous individuals and families, especially in the churches of which he was a member. His Christian service to others was apparent in his every day life, as he participated in church and community up until his death. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Morganton during his youth, where his mother was the church organist. When he return to Morganton in the latter years of his life, he and his wife once again became active at First Baptist Church. After her death, he became affiliated with the North Morganton United Methodist Church and attended there with his many nieces and nephews, old neighbors and friends. The congregation there held special memories for him, as his father was instrumental in founding the church. As a biblical scholar, he taught Sunday school, established a library for the church and presently served on the Church Council. Adults and children alike will sorely miss the presence of the man who came to be called “ Uncle Fred”.

Mr. Lane served his community as former member of the Morganton Kiwanis Club in the eighties held the position of site administrator for the Burke County’s nutrition center for the elderly, supervising what came to be known as Mobile Meals. He was a contributing member of the Burke County Historic Foundation. In 1989 he was appointed to serve on the N.C. Council on Aging.

Mr. Lane loved poetry and could recite numerous pieces from his early school days when recitation was required by school curriculum. Several years ago he participated in musical performances by the local senior citizen group, The Choraliers.

He is survived by: brother Edward B. Lane Sr. and wife Angie Hawkins Lane of Morganton; nephews Edward B. Lane Jr., Richard Lane, Stephen Lane Jr., Herbert Lane Jr., Eddie Paul Winkler; nieces Nina Hogan, Mary Bradley, Etta Lane, Belle Stamey, Peggy Lane, Louise Hope, Margaret Locker, Ruth Lane-Kretchmer and Hazel Rector.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at the North Morganton United Methodist Church with the Reverend John Woods officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 10 till 11AM Wednesday prior to the services at North Morganton United Church.

Memorials in Mr. Lanes’ memory may be made to the North Morganton United Methodist Church, 990 Sandford Drive, Morganton NC 28655.

Mr. Jerry Leonard Dyson

Mr. Jerry Leonard Dyson, 59, of Pax Hill Road, died Wednesday, December 10th at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was born May 18, 1944 in Caldwell County and was son of the late Carl and Carrie Presswood Dyson.

Mr. Dyson was the owner and operator of Jerry’s Welding Shop in Morganton and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Buford and Bobby Dyson.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Mathes Dyson; sons, Randy Allen Dyson; Freddie Lee Dyson and wife, Toni Hunter Dyson, all of Morganton; daughters, Teresa Dyson Hunt and husband, Bobby, of Morganton and Lisa Michelle Dyson of the home; sisters, Betty Dyson Crump of Charlotte; Barbara Dyson Huffman and husband, Melvin of Morganton and Judy Dyson Peyronel of Morganton; 3 grandchildren Mandy Dyson, Katie Dyson and Tatum Dyson; 5 step-grandchildren, Wendy Hunt Gowan, Sandy and Brandy Hunt, Jordan Hunt and Megan Hunter; 3 step-great grandchildren; Kristi Gowan, Josh Gowan and Jacob Gowan.

A funeral service will be 3:00 PM Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church with Reverend Burt Wilbur officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton.
