Died: Sept. 1, 2000

Conley Odell Graybeal, 80, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 3 at Henson Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Jim Hutchinson and Rev. Julian C. Glenn officiated. Graveside services and burial was held Sept. 4 at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Paul Graybeal, Eddie Lipford, Tim Lipford, Ronnie Lipford, David Graybeal, Joe Graybeal and Boyd Dunn. Honorary pallbearers were the men at the senior citizens center.

Mr. Graybeal was a native of Ashe County, but had made his home in Johnson County, Tenn. for most of his life. He was a former employee of Armour Meat Company for 19 years and was also a merchant. He was the son of the late Calton L. and Bessie Eastridge Graybeal. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Wade, Vaughn, Burnice and Chester Graybeal.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Kahlstorf Graybeal of the home; two sons, David Graybeal, New Port, Minn., and Robert “Bob” Graybeal, Mountain City, Tenn.; four sisters, Sue Simmons, Wayne, Pa., and Betty Stuart, Bobbie Jean Cogswell and Ruth Cook, all of Mountain City, Tenn.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Horatio Dwight Quessenberry
West Jefferson
Aug. 19, 1914
Sept. 2, 2000

Horatio Dwight Quessenberry, 86, was remembered at memorial services held Sept. 5 at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. Rev. Hayward Morrison and Rev. A.B. Weaver officiated. Burial followed in the Cranberry cemetery in Laurel Springs.

Mr. Quessenberry was born in Floyd County, Va. to Pecry and Ola Quessenberry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Reeves Quessenberry. He was a member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1934 and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He served in the U.S. Army as a captain in infantry, he was a World War II veteran where he served in Germany, Italy and France. He worked for the Surry County, N.C. Public School System as a teacher. During the 1940s, Mr. Quessenberry served as the Ashe County, N.C. Agricultural Extension Agent. During the 1950s, he served as a livestock specialist in Raleigh with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1976.

He is survived by his son, Frank Quessenberry, West Jefferson; three daughters, Barbara Derman, East Lansing, Mich., Betsy Griffin, Joplin, Mo., and Marion Hinson, Marshville; and five grandchildren.

Walter Eugene Smith

Walter Eugene Smith, 53, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 4 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Jack Pugh officiated. Burial followed in the Smith Family cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Ashe County to George and Jessie Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Castellano; two sons, Timothy Neal and Christopher Thomas Smith; his mother, Jessie Smith, West Jefferson; four brothers, James and Lonnie Smith, West Jefferson, Danny Smith, Wilkesboro, and Wilbert Smith, Kansas City, Mo.; four sisters, Linda Price and Bonnie McCoy, West Jefferson, Francis Hurley, Wilkesboro, and Lois Day, Lansing; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Round Knob Baptist Church Building Fund.

Stephen James Gentry
Millers Creek

Stephen James Gentry, 51, was remembered at memorial services held Sept. 2 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Father J. Kenneth Asel officiated. A graveside memorial service was held Sept. 3 at Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery. Rev. Tim Roten officiated.

Mr. Gentry was born in Ashe County to Ambrose and Verna Joines Gentry. He was a graduate of Appalachian State University, where he received his master’s degree in leadership and higher education. Before moving to Wilkes County, he developed educational curriculums for the States of North Carolina and Florida. In Wilkes he was a homebuilder and the owner of Carolina Valley construction. He was a volunteer and contractor for Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Ann Mullen Gentry of the home; a daughter, Steffanie Gentry, Athens, Ga.; four sons, Matthew and Wesley Gentry, both of Athens, Ga., and Jake and Levi Gentry, both of Millers Creek; his parents, Ambrose and Verna Joines Gentry, West Jefferson; five sisters, Betty Lewis, Roanoke, Va., Helen Davis, Greensboro, Margaret Howell, Brevard, Sherley Vannoy, Pfafftown and Carol Sharpe, West Jefferson; three brothers, Andrew Gentry, Todd, William Gentry, Brevard, and Joe Gentry, Kernersville; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 910 C. Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

Charles Glenn, 22 was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 17 at Sutherland Baptist Church. Rev. John Shelton officiated. Burial followed in the Potter-Main cemetery in Creston.

Mr. Glenn was born in Watauga County to Roger and Junie Lipford Glenn. He was a graduate of Northwest Ashe High School in Warrensville and an employee of Vannoy Construction Company. He was a member of Tamarack Church of Christ.

He is survived by his mother, Junie Lipford Glenn, Creston; his biological father, Roger Glenn, Sugar Grove; his father, Gary Trivette, Creston; one brother, Tony Johnson and wife, Lisa; and one sister, Joleen Eastridge and husband, David, all of Creston; one step-sister, Angela Trivette, Winston-Salem; one step-brother, Gary Lee Trivette, Creston; his fiance’, Crystal Roberts; two stepsons, Christian Roberts and Jacob Wade, all of Creston; maternal grandmother, Lena Potter, Marion; paternal grandmother, Priscilla Glenn, Sugar Grove; maternal great-grandmother, Docia Greer, Creston; and his step-grandmother, Viola Trivette, Creston.

Samuel Marion Kerns
Erwin, Tenn.
Died: Sept. 12, 2000

Samuel Marion Kerns, 64, passed away following a brief illness.

A native of Unicoi County, he was a son of the late Charles and Laura Belle Love Kerns. He was employed by Murray Security, but previously worked for the Unicoi County Sheriffs Department. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Kerns, William E. Kerns, and Charles Kerns; and two sisters, Nellie Bennett and Myrtle Childress.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Parsons Kerns; one son, Franklin Carter Kerns, Erwin, Tenn.; two daughters, Carol Ann Cornelius, New Port Richey, Fla., and Donna Lynn Gardiner, Port Richey, Fla.; one step son, Bryan Royal, Johnson City, Tenn.; one step daughter, Michelle Whitson, Erwin, Tenn.; two brothers, Robert E. Kerns, Kingsport, Tenn. and Everett Carter Kerns; three sisters, Blanche Masters, Erwin, Tenn., Peggy Schaumberg and Jo Draine, both of Johnson City, Tenn.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Kathy Carpenter

Kathy Carpenter, 44, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 17 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson. Rev. Denton Hart, the Rev. Ronda Rash and the Rev. Bluferd Eldreth officiated. Entombment was held Sept. 18 at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Prayer.

Mrs. Carpenter was born in Ashe County. She was employed by Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

She is survived by her husband, Rodger Dale Carpenter Sr.; two sons, Roger Dale Carpenter Jr. and fiancee, Sherrie Boyer of Creston, and Christopher Lee Carpenter of the home; two daughters, Angela Dawn Edgell and husband, Adam of Ft. Stewart, Ga., and Michelle Lynn Carpenter of the home; her grandmother, Uzella Lewis of Creston; three sisters, JoAnn Richardson, Lansing, Janette Reese, Creston and Melissa Brown, Mountain City, Tenn.; and one granddaughter, Samantha Nicole Carpenter.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Bertha Powers Sexton, 91, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 17 at Bethel Baptist Church in Lansing. Rev. Rex Hall, Rev. Fred Richardson and Rev. Junior Miller officiated. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.

Mrs. Sexton was born in Ashe County to Eugene and Mammie Powers. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Sexton.

She is survived by a son, Ira Sexton, Lansing; three daughters, Laura Shepherd, Lena Rhodes and Frances McCready, all of Lansing; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and one niece.

Johnsie Mae Lambert
West Jefferson

Johnsie Mae Lambert, 74, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 17 at Friendly Grove Baptist Church in West Jefferson. Pastor Jerry Francis and Rev. Charles Edwards officiated. Burial followed in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.

Mrs. Lambert was born in Ashe County to Edward and Lessie Bare. She was a member of the Friendly Grove Baptist Church in West Jefferson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy James Lambert; and two grandchildren.

She is survived by four daughters, Jean Curtis, Millers Creek, Virginia Stewart, Blountville, Tenn., and Raydell Nobles and Pansy Hunt, both of Thomasville; four sons, James Lambert, Ivan Lambert and Lloyd Lambert, all of West Jefferson, and Joe Daniel Lambert, Lexington; six brothers, J.D. Bare, Junior Bare, Cliff Bare, Clay Bare, Allen Bare, all of Burlington, and Vestal Bare, Rock Hill, S.C.; three sisters, Opal Thacker and Georgia Bullock, Burlington, and Ruby Owens, North Wilkesboro; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ben “Bud” Ervin Cross Jr.
Jan. 18, 1943
Sept. 16, 2000

Ben “Bud” Ervin Cross Jr., 57, was remembered at funeral services held Sept. 19 at Laurel Knob Baptist Church. Rev. Jim Rash and Rev. Bruce Roten officiated. Burial followed in the Goodman cemetery.

Mr. Cross was born in Martin County.

He is survived by his wife, Vonda Cross; two sisters, Louise Bullock, Pinetops, and Sue Cratts, Williamston; one brother, David Cross, Oak City; two step-sons, James Jackson Sanderford and Glen Thomas Sanderford, both of Raleigh; one step-daughter, Cecile Tant, Atex; five step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Scruggs was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents, W.T. Peace and Bessie Morris Peace; and Stevey Amanda Randolph.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Dean Scruggs; one son, John Langley, Shelby; three daughters, Beth Hamrick, Newport News, Va., Angie Miller, Vale, and Mandy Ballard, Mooresboro; four brothers, Thomas Luther Peace, Kings Mountain, Caldwell Peace, Cherryville, Calvin Peace, Polkville, and Michel Peace, Shelby; four sisters, Hazel Morgan, Patsy White, Joyce Parker and June Washburn, Shelby; 10 grandchildren, Travis Langley, Nickey Langley, Jason Stapleton, John Stapleton, Kristofer Hamrick, Benjamin Hamrick, Wesley Owens, Emily Miller, Adam Randolph and Kelly Ballard.
