Robert Daron Matthews
Robert Daron “Sonny” Matthews, 67, died February 26, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. He was born in Stokes County to Willie Lee Matthews Sr. and Mabel Irene Fansler Matthews. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and a farmer and was loved by the entire community. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, James Aaron “Buddy” Matthews; and two sisters, Virginia Cook and Margaret Joyce.
Surviving are five sisters, Annie Greene and husband Byron of Walnut Cove, Doris Mabe and husband Gilmer of Lawsonville, Ruby Crews of Walnut Cove, Shelby Fagg and husband Louis of Winston-Salem and Sarah Alley and husband William of Walnut Cove; four brothers, Willie Lee Matthews Jr. and wife Magdalene of Winston-Salem, Willard Matthews and wife Ann of Lewisville, Charles Matthews and wife Hilda Gray of Walnut Cove and Larry Matthews and wife Gail of Pine Hall; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Heitman officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Howard Olin Cline
Howard Olin Cline, 81, of Pfafftown died February 26 at his home. He was born October 23, 1924, to the late Howard Olin Cline Sr. and Hessie Smith Cline. He was a long-time member of Pfafftown Christian Church and sang in the church choir for more than 45 years. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific and was an active member of the Pfafftown VFW, where he volunteered many hours for fund raising projects. H.O. had an unending love for all animals and supported the local Humane Society as well as numerous other charities. After retiring from United Dairies in 1976, he became an avid gardener and loved sharing his homegrown produce with family, friends and neighbors.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Freda Grubbs Cline; a brother, Rex. S. Cline and wife Vallie; two sisters, Erma C. Cline and Wilma Dane Hill; a daughter, Patricia M. Kirk and husband Robert; a son, Lawrence O. Cline and wife Jane; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous loved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Pfafftown Christian Church with Rev. Dr. Tom Everton officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pattie Elizabeth Transou
Pattie Elizabeth Transou, 102, of Pfafftown died February 21 at Bobbie’s House Assisted Living. She was born on October 13, 1903, in Forsyth County to Claude Transou and Addie Davis Transou. She was a registered nurse for many years and was a member of Pfafftown Christian Church.
Surviving are a younger sister, Helen Claude Transou; and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Doris Coleman Paynter
Doris Coleman Paynter, 80, of Clemmons died March 20 at her home. She was born November 12, 1925, in Forsyth County to W. Odell and Eva Heath Coleman. She was a member of Cape Carteret Baptist Church. She graduated from John W. Hanes High School class of 1943.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Richard V. Paynter of the home; a son, Mike Paynter and wife Shirley of Virginia Beach, Va.; two granddaughters, Ashley and Elizabeth; two sisters, Kathleen Helsabeck and Pauline Pegram, both of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Smith Brown
Elizabeth ‘Lib” Smith Brown, 88, formerly of Clemmons, died March 17 at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born August 14, 1917, in Davie County to Sanford Douglas and Mabel Cook Smith. She was a longtime active member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church and a member of the Eastern Star. She was retired from Stanley Shoe Store. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilburn “Bill” F. Brown; her sister, Erma Mae Smith Cashion; and a daughter, Shelby Jean Brown Prag.
Surviving are two granddaughters, Patricia S. Furio of California, Md., and Ellen S. Lambeth of Marietta, Ga.; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard.

Dottie Minton Greer
Dottie Minton Greer, 61, of Millers Creek died March 20 at her home. She was born July 26, 1944, in Wilkes County to George and Viola “Polly” Pilkington Minton. She retired from Tyson Foods, Inc. as an administrative assistant. She was a charter member of Greater Vision Baptist Church, where she was a director of Vacation Bible School, director of Women on Mission, church clerk, choir member, Mission Friends leader and Brushy Mountain Association messenger. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gina Alison Greer.
Surviving are her husband, G. Wayne Greer of the home; a son, Alan Wayne Greer and wife Amanda of Clemmons; a sister, Jane M. Bynum of Millers Creek; a brother, George “Edd” Minton and wife Jane of Hudson, Mich.; and two grandchildren, Lauren Gail Greer and Connor William Greer.
Funeral services were held at Greater Vision Baptist Church with Rev. Lyn Lambert officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Trossy William Flynt
Trossy “Bill” William Flynt, 87, of Rural Hall died March 17. He was born May 28, 1918, in Stokes County to Ollie McCoy Flynt and Myrtle Elizabeth Wall Flynt. He was a faithful member of Oak Summit Community Church, where he served as a deacon. Het was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the India/Burma Theater. He was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant before being discharged after seven years of service. He retired from Western Electric after 30 years of service. He loved camping, steam-engine trains, history, trivia, cornbread and milk, chocolate ice cream, the South and ACC basketball. He was very active in his community during his life, enjoying serving as president of the North Forsyth Little League and as Cub Scout leader, Pack 914, in Rural Hall. He was a member of American Legion Post 290 in King and Sons of the Confederate Veterans. In his retired life, he served as the “official” Santa Claus of Rural Hall for many years due to his great love of children. He was preceded in death by three brothers Rogers, Max and Holt Flynt.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Frankie Estelle Baker Flynt; three sons, Marcus Flynt and wife Rebecca of Mocksville, Ricky Flynt and wife Sonja of Pilot Mountain and Gary Flynt and wife Patty of Clemmons; his grandchildren, Tammy Johnson and husband Rodney and Kevin Flynt and wife Luanne, Holly, April, Joshua and Hannah Flynt; his great-grandchildren, Cole, Dawson, Addison and Andrew; two brothers, Drexall Flynt of Germanton and Wallace Flynt of Rockingham; his sisters-in-law, Louise Flynt, Dot Swaim, Jean and Billie Weavil, Lucille Motsinger and Pearl Yontz; and a brother-in-law, Talmadge Baker.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with David Boher, Dan Salmons and Ron Exline officiating. Burial with military honors by the King American Legion Honor Guard followed in Crestview Memorial Park.

Leathia Mae Sheppard Wood
Leathia Mae Sheppard Wood, 82, of Kernersville died March 19 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Kernersville. She was born in Montgomery County, Va., on November 3, 1923, to the late James Ernest and the late Ethel Nancy Hutchison Sheppard. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rena Mae Fox.
Surviving are four daughters, Rachel Crews and husband Jerry of Kernersville, Lucy Peck and husband Dennis of Germanton, Wanda Rankin of Oak Island and Sarah Smith and husband Chris of Clemmons; four sons, Rufus Pritchard and wife Dianne and Thomas Wood, both of Winston-Salem, Ralph Pritchard and wife Dianne of Walkertown and Lewis Pritchard and wife Juanita of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nora Bell Cromer of Christiansburg, Va., and Carola Blankenbecker of Palmyra, Va.; two brothers, Roy Sheppard of Christiansburg and Jackie Sheppard of Dublin, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home Chapel in Rural Hall with Brother Don Collins and Rev. Henry Cook officiating. Burial followed at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown.

Everett Varner
Everett Varner, 84, of Pfafftown died March 21 at his home. He was born July 17, 1921, in Newsom, son of the lake Hoke Holmes Varner and the late Della Taylor Kelly. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II and was a retired manager with A&P grocery stores. He was a longtime member of Community United Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Byers Varner; son, Russell Hayes Varner; sister, Lena V. Kiger; and special friend Nancy C. Shore.
Surviving are his son, Larry S. Varner and wife Dianne; a daughter-in-law, Martha Varner; a granddaughter, Brooke Varner; and three grandsons, Chris Varner, Rusty Spaugh and Tony Spaugh.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Chapel with Rev. Steve Monroe officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.

Lawrence A. Hollis
Lawrence A. Hollis, 67, of Clemmons died March 19 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are his wife, Judith A. Hollis of Clemmons; a daughter, Julia A. Wilhelm and husband Gregory M. Wilhelm of Winston-Salem; his son, Arthur H. Hollis and wife Nancy Hollis of Kernersville; and four grandchildren, Heather, Corey, Daniel and Joan.

Michael Joseph Cochrane
Michael Joseph Cochrane, 70, of Winston-Salem died March 25 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born November 14, 1935, in Winston-Salem, a son of Joseph H. and Rena Cochrane. He served the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-56, and attended the University of Miami before going to work full time in the electrical industry, which he did for 50 years.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Judith K. Cochrane; two sons, Joseph B. Cochrane of Clemmons and Steven M. Cochrane and wife April of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Shiela Poor of Crestone, Colo. and Mary Lou McWhorter of Naples, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Steven and Brooke Cochrane, both of Winston-Salem.

Wilda Mae Jackson Long
Wilda Mae Jackson Long, 65, of State Road died March 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 13, 1941, in Surry County to Joseph L. and Nevada Howard Jackson. She was a member of Grassy Creek United Methodist Church, where she was a former secretary and treasurer. She was retired from Westpoint Stevens. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Joe Jackson.
Surviving are two sons, Mitchell Long and wife Verona of Dobson and Bobby Long and Cathy of Hamptonville; two brothers, Bernard Jackson and wife Jean of Roaring Gap and Henry Jackson and wife Carol of Lewisville; four sisters, Wanda Hardy and husband Leo of Elkin, Betty Davis and husband Brady of Lewisville, Ruthie Davis of Elkin and Sandra Wilhelm and husband Howard of State Road; three grandchildren, Ashley Long, Casey Long and John Nixon; a sister-in-law, Roselyn Jackson of Elkin; 15 nieces and nephews; and many friends and good neighbors.
Funeral services were held at Grassy Creek United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Prichard and Rev. Rowley “Dink” Haynes Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Hilda Beeker Seaford
Hilda Beeker Seaford, 92, formerly of the Fork community in Mocksville, died March 23 at DuShane Family Care Center. She was born May 18, 1913, in Davidson County to Elmo and Alice Myers Beeker. She was a longtime member of Fork Baptist Church, where she taught in the Beginner Department in Sunday school for more than 50 years. She was a very active member of WMU and choir before her health declined. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert Lee Seaford, on March 22, 1995; and a brother, Harold Beeker, on January 3, 2006.
Surviving are three daughters, Frances Hendrix and husband Henry of Clemmons and Dorothy Hemrick and husband Joe and Jane Jones and husband Nelson, all of Mocksville; three granddaughters, Kim Latham and husband Tim, Paula Tkach and husband David and Jenny Yost and husband Cory, all of Mocksville; a grandson, Kent Woodward and wife Melissa of Winston Salem; four great-granddaughters, Savannah Yost, Emmie Tkach and Sierra and Macie Latham; three great-grandsons, Jacob Latham, Jesse Tkach and Hunter Woodward; two sisters, Melba Leonard and Lala Tussey and husband Dave, all of Lexington; two brothers, Burton Beeker and Graham Beeker and wife Frances, all of Reeds; a sister-in-law, Sarah Beeker of Reeds; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Garrett and Rev. Yates Wilkinson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Annie Lee Speaks Plott
Annie Lee Speaks Plott, 85, of Mocksville, died March 22 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born June 8, 1920, in Yadkin County to Jonas Edward and Daisy Howard Speaks. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, had been the oldest active member, and was a member of United Methodist Women. She was very outgoing and enjoyed helping and doing for her friends and family. She especially enjoyed shopping, cooking, baking cakes and gardening. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Artis Plott, on February 8, 1999; a daughter, Christine Plott; a sister, Artha Speaks Robertson; and three brothers, J.E. Speaks, Jack Speaks and Vivan Speaks.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Plott Galliher and husband Jim of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Pedro Plott and wife Sherry of Mocksville and Gene Plott of Clemmons; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two very close friends, Amanda White and Glenda Webb.
Funeral services were held at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Rev. Nick Scandale, Dean Allen and Korry Harrier officiating. Burial followed in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Norman Worth Moser
Norman Worth Moser, 73, of Lewisville died May 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on March 6, 1933, to Thomas L. and Nellie Grace Norman Moser. He was a member of Warners Chapel Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon, elder and Bible class teacher. He was the owner of N.W. Moser Construction Co.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Di-Ann Cress Moser; two daughters, Beth M. Hutcherson and husband James of Lewisville and Ann M. Riddle and husband Stan of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Katie and Destan Hutcherson and Lindsay Riddle; a sister, Nellie Kathryn Dorse and husband Bahnson of Lewisville; and a brother, L. Ray Moser and wife Peggy of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Warners Chapel Church of Christ with Paul Kirkpatrick, minister, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Betty Jean Smith Hege
Betty Jean Smith Hege, 79, of Winston-Salem died May 29 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem on January 21, 1927, to the late George B. and Pearl Marshall Smith. She was a member of Pinedale Christian Church, where she worked as church secretary for many years. She was also an active member of the Young at Heart group at the church. She was the wife of the late Richard Franklin Hege for 61 years. She enjoyed attending her grandson’s ballgames and sporting events.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen Cole and husband Randy of Apex; a son, Steve Hege and wife Brenda of Winston-Salem; four grandsons, Brian Hege and wife Kristie of Clemmons, Wesley Hege and wife Nikki of Hampstead and Austin Cole and Tyler Cole, both of Apex; two great-granddaughters, Emily Hege and Abigail Hege; two sisters, Phyllis Jones and Dorothy Holland, both of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Donald Smith of Pilot Mountain.
Funeral services were held at Pinedale Christian Church with Bill McKenzie and Rev. Randy Sherrill officiating. Entombment followed in Salem Cemetery Mausoleum.

Dewey Augustus Long
Dewey Augustus Long, 94, of King died May 31 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 15, 1911, to the late Authur James and Mary Burge Long. He was married to Madeline Hauser Long on October 17, 1931. She passed away July 2, 1997. He moved to King in 1931 as owner of King Meat Market and later began a construction company, building houses in and around Stokes and Forsyth counties. In 1960, he opened King Pool Builders and Supplies, which he operated until 2004. He was the first elected mayor pro tem for the city of King and served as a King city councilman from 1983 to 1991. He was very active in helping start the King Volunteer Fire Department, and the water and sewer systems in King. As long as health permitted, he was an active member of First Baptist Church in King, serving as a deacon, teacher, Sunday-school superintendent and on numerous committees. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant sister; brother Launie Long; and son-in-law Bill Watts.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Frances Watts, Barbara Watts and husband John and Kay Tuttle and husband Marvin, all of King; two sons, Wayne Long and wife Carol of Clemmons and Jerry Long and wife Joanne of King; nine grandchildren, Andy Watts and wife Beverly, Michelle Castelveter and husband David, Lu Liveningood and husband Max, Kim Newsome and husband Craig, Vic Tuttle and wife Lisa, Tyler Tuttle and wife Linda, Jeffrey Long, Jason Long and Lenn Long; 11 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Burge Long and wife Pattie of Yadkinville; and a sister-in-law, Inez Long of King
A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church in King. Burial followed at King Memorial Park.

Romayne Rhome Vrhovac
Romayne Rhome Vrhovac of Pfafftown, the widow of Nick Vrhovac Sr., died May 29 at The Brian Center in Winston-Salem. She was a member of Brookstown United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 205, American Legion Post No. 295 and past president of the Brownsville, Pa., Nurses Alumni Association. She was a retired RN with 40 years of service in many aspects of nursing.
Surviving are her son, Nick Vrhovac and wife Suzanne of Winston-Salem; a sister, Bonnie Trout of Mt. Pleasant, Pa.; a brother, Rev. Dale Rhome of Oil City, Pa.; and her siblings’ respective families.
A graveside service was held at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating.

Richard Victor Carter Sr.
Richard “Bubba” Victor Carter Sr., 57, of Advance died May 31 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 7, 1948, in Forsyth County to Richard O. and Elsie Britt Carter. He was employed with Bodford Construction Co.
Surviving are his wife, Becky Carter of the home; a daughter, Pamela Bean and husband Ronnie of Advance; a son, Richard Victor Carter Jr. and wife Magan of Clemmons; and four grandchildren, Zach and Andrew Bean and Dakota and Makenna Carter.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Brother Sam Jones officiating.

Ernest Caswell Brewer
Ernest “Ernie” Caswell Brewer, 85, of Lewisville died May 31 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He had been ill since December. He was born August 30, 1920, to George Monroe and Nancy Ellis Brewer in Ramseur. He grew up in High Point and was a lifetime member of Green Street Baptist Church. He spent his career in the restaurant business as an owner and manager. He played minor league baseball and was an avid golfer. He was a veteran and served in the Army in Germany and France during World War II. He was a HAM radio operator, licensed by the U.S. Army MARS program to receive messages from those serving overseas and deliver them to their families. He was active in the Triad Amateur Radio Association and a VE volunteer. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and his son, Michael.
Surviving are his wife of more than 50 years, Dolores “Frieda” Brewer of the home; his children, Lauren Hurst and husband Don of Clemmons; Mark Brewer and wife Loretta of Conway, S.C.; Paul Brewer of Conway; Bill Brewer of Richmond, Va.; Jim Brewer and wife Maryanne of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Nancy Brewer of Lewisville; Ron Brewer of Winston-Salem; Carolyn Bost of Knightdale; and Barbara Finch of Raleigh; his grandchildren, Brenda Sauer and husband Tommy of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; Chris Deal and husband Martin of The Woodlands, Texas; Carol Faison and husband Jonathan of Knightdale; Pam Greeson and husband Andrew of Greensboro; Craig Finch of Clayton; Jaime Terrell and husband Gary of McDonough, Ga.; Ben and Sam Hurst of Clemmons; and Steve Gilbow and Heather Hamilton of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and five great-grandchildren, Anne Deal, Taylor and Jarrett Sauer, Joshua Faison and Riley Terrell.
Funeral services were held at River Oaks Community Church with Pastor Sonny Flowers officiating. A military service by the VFW Honor Guard followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.

Hazel L. Faircloth
Hazel L. Faircloth, 79, of Red Springs died May 30 at Clemmons Rehab and Nursing Home. She was born in Robeson County on November 4, 1926, to the late William Lester Faircloth and Virgie Armstrong Faircloth. She was employed as a registered nurse at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton before she retired and was a member of the Eastern Star in Lancaster, Calif. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Morgan; and two brothers, Robert and Charles Faircloth.
Surviving are three nephews, Ernest Morgan and wife Connie of Sanford, William Robertson and wife Kimberly of Advance and Andrew Faircloth of Redding, Calif.; three nieces, Janice Thorne and husband Mark of Clemmons, Katherine Olive of Port Orchard, Wash., and Sandra Ziegler and husband Scott of Las Vegas, Nev.; five great-nephews, Charles Robertson of Advance, Drew Faircloth of Redding, Dylan Ziegler of Las Vegas, Tyler Ziegler of Las Vegas and Daniel King of Port Orchard; five great-nieces, Jennifer Sutherland and husband Rodney of Burlington, Christina Thorne of Clemmons, Samantha Thorne of Clemmons, Hayley Robertson of Advance and Ashley Faircloth of Port Orchard; and a great-great-niece, Sierra Thorne of Clemmons.
A graveside service was held at Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs with Rev. Joseph Hayes officiating.
