Elder Robert Allen Pettus
Elder Robert Allen Pettus, 41, of Winston-Salem of Winston-Salem died May 22 after a short illness. He was born to Gladys W. Pettus and Robert L. Hauser on May 20, 1963. He was employed with Wachovia Bank and Trust for many years. For the past two years he was employed with Signs and Wonders Learning Academy (SWLA) as financial facilities administrator and with In Motions Dance Studio. He was presently enrolled at Forsyth Technical Community College to receive an accreditation in early childhood education. He was a Christian by faith and deed and had held memberships with various church bodies. He accepted Christ at an early age while in attendance at Reynolds Temple CME Church, later moving to Macedonia True Vine Pentecostal Holiness Church. He accepted his call to the ministry while a member of Christ Cathedral Holiness Church under the leadership of Bishop Freddie Marshall. Later God so directed him to join the family of Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church under the leadership of Pastor Sheldon and Co-Pastor Joyce McCarter. While there he was involved with the Ministerial Council, Pastor’s Aide and Sons of the Father Ministry and was recently elevated to the office of Ministering Elder. His mother and his brother, Donald Pettus, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his father of Clemmons; three sisters, Loretta Pettus, Johnsie Pettus and Virginia Martin, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Richard Pettus and wife Dorothy and George Pettus; a godbrother, Jimmie Lee Keel, all of Winston-Salem; a maternal grandmother, Macie Byrant of Gastonia; a godmother, Anna Lue Keel Winston-Salem; a play-father, Arthur Gray of Winston-Salem; special friends who will miss the place he held in their lives, Larry Sparks, Devon Williams, Marva Sewell, Bishop Brenda Nelson, Yolandra and Myha Shipp and Ruth Hughes and girls; a devoted friend, Roderick Roberston; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, family members, friends and a loving church family.
Funeral services were held at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church in Winston-Salem with Pastor Sheldon M. McCarter officiating, and burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

David L. Kick
Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. David L. Kick, SC, 75, of Clemmons, formerly of Mount Pleasant, SC, died at home September 8. He was born to Karl Kramer Kick and Mary Elizabeth Lime Kick of Ashland, Ohio, on June 29, 1929. He was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1951. His service included duty aboard the USS Curtiss (AV-4), where he was a witness to the first prototype hydrogen bomb explosion at Eniwetoc Atoll, as well as assignments as supply officer on the USS Whitehurst (DE-634) and USS Fremont (APA-44). His service included a range of supply, logistic and finance duties, culminating in his assignment as commanding officer of the Navy Regional Finance Center in Washington, DC. He retired from the Navy in 1975 after 24 years of honorable service. His service awards include the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Award. He was preceded in death by Mary Alice Bell Kick, his wife of 47 years.
Surviving are his sister, Judy Kick Butler of Findlay, Ohio; three daughters, Nancy Kick Ries and husband Daniel of Virginia Beach, Va., Barbara Kick Sheffield and husband Billy of Clemmons and Kathryn Ellen Allen and husband Paul of Chesapeake, Va.; seven grandchildren; three nephews; and a grandniece.
A memorial service was held in the little chapel in the Learning Center at Salem College. A graveside service was held at Christ Church Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, SC.

Mary Lee Nelson
Mary Lee Nelson, 91, of Charlotte died September 16 at Quail Haven Village in Pinehurst. She was born August 13, 1913, in Montgomery, Ala., to Joseph A. and Annie Jordan. She was married to the late Rev. W.O. Nelson. She was a member of Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, where she was honored with a life membership in Presbyterian Women. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Dunlap.
Surviving are her son, William L. Nelson and wife Sue of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Martha Phifer and husband Homer C. Phifer Jr. of Pinehurst; her grandchildren, Zan Ellen Davis and husband John of Clemmons, H. Craig Phifer II and wife Lynne of Pinehurst, Roxanne Elizabeth King and husband George of Kernersville, Mark A. McNeill and wife Crystal of Charlotte, W. Lee Nelson Jr. and wife Ginger of Lewisville and Shannon Francisco of Uzzano, Italy; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church with Rev. Greg Gillispie officiating.

Cleo Virginia Baity Everidge
Cleo Virginia Baity Everidge, 84, of Clemmons died September 18 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 2, 1920, in Davie County to Edward William and Flora Gregory Baity. She was employed with Hanes Knitting for over 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Everidge; a sister, Vatra Trantham; and a brother, Wade Baity.
Surviving are two sisters, Mildred Scott and husband Luther of Winston-Salem and Hazel Stevenson and husband Charles of Clemmons; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Baity Dull of Lewisville; two nieces, Janet McAllister and husband Norman of Winston-Salem and Elaine Norman and husband Arlis of East Bend; a nephew, Ronald Scott and wife Linda of Winston-Salem; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Dr. Robby Phillips officiating.

Clara Dell Hackney Andrews
Clara Dell Hackney Andrews, 88, died suddenly September 15 at Vienna Village in Pfafftown. She was born in Chatham County near Carrboro and Bynum on March 21, 1916, to Kemp Hill Hackney and Maude Hearn Hackney. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who lived in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and in the Frosty community in northeast Chatham County until moving to Burlington’s Oak Creek/White Oak in December 2001 and to Vienna Village in April 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Henry Raymond Andrews Sr., who died April 22, 2004; and her sisters, Lena H. Lewis, Ruth H. Walters, Mildred H. Crabtree and Harriett Hackney.
Surviving are a daughter, Anzenette H.A.M. Jenkins of Durham; and sons Henry R. Andrews Jr. and wife Glenda of Pfafftown and Kearney H. Andrews and wife Rosalyn of Lexington.; eight grandchildren, Vivian L. McKnight, S. Branford McKnight and wife Debbie, Bethanne M. Gipe and husband Doug, Virginia L.M. Sgromolo and husband Mark, Maria D.A. Logan and husband Mark, Kelly S.A. Upshaw and husband Richard, Laura J.A. Stowe and husband Scott and Clara Anne Adele Andrews; 20 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church in Pittsboro, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ralph Lane Wall III
Ralph Lane Wall III, 25, of Clemmons died unexpectedly September 19 at Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle. He was born April 22, 1979, in Durham County, the son of Dr. Ralph L. Wall Jr. and Patricia Rush Wall. He was a graduate of West Forsyth High School. He attended Howard University and Livingstone College and was a senior at Winston-Salem State University. He was a member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are a son, Chauncey Charles Fowler of Tulsa, Okla.; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ralph L. Wall Jr. of Clemmons; three sisters, Dr. Ronda Wall Davis of Newport News, Va., Dr. Tanya Wall of Orange Park, Fla., and Diana Wall of George Washington University in Washington, D.C.; his paternal grandmother, Mable Wall of Albemarle; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Union Chapel AME Zion Church in Albemarle with Rev. Oscar Rush officiating. Burial followed in East Side Cemetery in Albemarle.

Jaime Lynn Horn
Jaime Lynn Horn, 25, of Winston-Salem died September 17 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born May 19, 1979, in St. Louis, Mo., daughter of Debra Turner Horn and Milton Lewis Horn. She was the International Softball Commissioner for Babe Ruth League, Inc. She had a special love for autistic children and was very active in volunteer work and the community.
Surviving are her mother, Debra Horn of Pfafftown; her father, Milton Lewis Horn of Bedford, Va.; her sisters, Lindsay Leigh Horn of Pfafftown and Heather Horn Bell of Mount Airy; her grandparents, James and Barbara Turner of Leesburg, Fla.; her great-grandmother, Lucille Lee of Lady Lake, Fla.; her uncles, Richard Allen Turner of Pasadena, Fla., LeRoy Horn of Lancaster, Ky., and Marvin Ray Horn of Lynchburg, Va.; her Babe Ruth family and many tremendously loving friends.
Funeral services were held at Highland Presbyterian Church.

Hazel Blackburn McIntosh
Hazel Blackburn McIntosh, 85, of Lewisville died September 10 at Bermuda Terrace. She was born October 19, 1919, in Forsyth County. She was a lifelong member of Shiloh Lutheran Church and was preceded in death by her husband, William Wilson McIntosh, in 1997.
Surviving are a son, David McIntosh and wife Pam of Clemmons; and three grandsons, all of Clemmons, Kevin McIntosh and wife Erica, and Adam and Jonathan McIntosh.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.

Charles Mason Smith Sr.
Charles Mason “Smitty” Smith Sr., 72, of Winston-Salem died September 8 at Forsyth Medical Center after several years of serious illness. He was born December 17, 1932, in Anson County to Ernest James and Cassi Sinclair Smith. He was a resident of Winston-Salem for 45 years, serving in the Winston-Salem Police Department from 1962 until his retirement in 1987. He served as an M.P. in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Shirley Gregory Smith; four children and their spouses, Lynn and Barry Smith of Scottsdale, Ariz., Bucky and Tina Smith of Winston-Salem, Teri and Neal Beauchamp of Winston-Salem and Kay and Rick Hubbell of Durham; nine grandchildren, Colt, Whitney, Austin and Haley Smith, Lauren Carver, Michael Hubbell, Michael Webb, Scott Beauchamp and wife Carol and Nealise Queen and husband Jason; five great-grandchildren, Makenzie, Braedon, Brinleigh, Jacob and Tucker; and two sisters, Mary Conover of Lewisville and Betty Keziah of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Lemuel Hardison officiating. Entombment followed in Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors by the VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.

Betty Davis Levicki
Betty Davis Levicki, 54, died September 6 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center from complications of pancreatic cancer. A Pfafftown native, she was a first-grade and then a physical-education instructor in the Forsyth County schools. For the past six years, she had been a physical-education instructor at Fairmount Elementary in Georgia. She won Teacher of the Year awards at Lewisville Elementary School and at Fairmount Elementary School. She was an active member of the faculty and the community, leading the fundraising activities for Jump Rope for Heart and the United Way at both locations. She was also part of the School Improvement Committee at Lewisville and treasurer of the PTO committee at Fairmount. She was an avid fitness advocate, having run eight marathons in the last seven years and planning for a certification as a personal trainer and massage therapist. She truly believed in being a role model for the fitness of today’s youth. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Spencer Davis and Sallie Vogler Davis.
Surviving are her husband of 25 years, John; her brother, Charles Michael Davis and wife Debbie of Winston-Salem; her brother, George Levicki and wife Audrey of Roanoke, Va.; a special aunt, Ulva Vogler; five nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial followed at Brookstown Methodist Church Cemetery in Pfafftown.

Henry Jackson Shoaf Jr.
Henry Jackson Shoaf Jr., 55, of Lexington died September 7. He was born August 5, 1950, in Forsyth County to the late Henry Jackson and Josephine Ernest Shoaf. He was employed with Champion Industries and was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Kitty Daniel Shoaf of the home; two sons, Michael Daniel and wife Heather of Clemmons and Keith Walker and wife Terrie of Farmington; a daughter, Becky Sweat and husband Billy of Farmington; four grandchildren; a sister, Robbie Byrd of Winston-Salem; and two half sisters, Patsy Dinkins of Pfafftown and Sue Allen of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with Rev. Arkon Stewart officiating.

James Russell Stanley
James Russell Stanley, 68, of Pfafftown died September 9 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 27, 1936, in McDowell County, W.Va., to the late Benjamin Clark Stanley and Lela Blankenship Stanley. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 22 years of service. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ellen Cochran and Deloris Winston; and a brother, William Stanley.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Janet Jones Stanley; a daughter, Kathy Walser and husband Robert of Welcome; two sons, Timothy Stanley and wife Traci of Stokes County and James Stanley and wife Patricia of Pfafftown; seven grandchildren, Kristina Walser, Stanley Walser, Malachi Stanley, Kylie Ann Stanley, James Brandon Hailey, Jaide Hailey and Jordan Hailey; a sister, Carolyn Wimmer of West Virginia; a brother, Dewey Stanley and wife Betty of Charlotte; a godchild, Andrew Tedder; and special friends, Patti and Steve White.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with Rev. Glenn Messer and Rev. Wayne Byerly officiating.

Ida June Skeen Hale
Ida June Skeen Hale, 73, of Youngsville, died at home September 5 after an eight-year battle against breast cancer. She was born May 12, 1932, in South Charleston, W.Va., to Estel Clive and Mertie Mozelle Stroupe Skeen. She married in 1950, and the family moved to Winston-Salem in 1957, where she was a mother and housewife. In addition, she was active as a grade parent and in community organizations. She later enjoyed a position with the Clemmons Courier weekly newspaper. During a six-year residency in Kuwait, she assisted in preparing housing for new employees for the Bank of Kuwait & the Middle East and taught high school journalism at the American School of Kuwait. In 1983, the Hales formally retired to Beaufort, where she actively volunteered at Martha’s Cupboard. In 1999, they relocated to Youngsville. She spent the last five years volunteering at Triangle Area Ministries. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Don Garver Hale.
Surviving are her children, Dana Hale King of Wake Forest; David Matthew and Teresa Faison Hale, also of Wake Forest; Jeffrey Allen and Marilee Strasser Hale of Lexington; Benjamin Henry Hale of Raleigh; and Susan Victoria Hale of Wilmington.; three grandchildren, Katherine Faison Hale, Andrew Elam Hale and Charlotte June Hale, all of Wake Forest.
A memorial service was held at Wake Forest Presbyterian Church.

Robert Lester Leach
Robert Lester “Bobby” Leach, 57, of Winston-Salem, died September 4 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born to Earlene Leach of Winston-Salem and the late Albert Leach. He served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Dobbins, Perry Leach and George Leach; and a grandchild, Rasheem Scott.
Surviving are a son, Rodrick Williams Sr. of Statesville; two daughters, Missey White of Statesville and LaKeisha King of Gainesville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Destiny Scott, Rodrick Williams Jr. of Statesville and Ciara King of Gainesville; four brothers, Charles Leach and wife Delores of Garfield, N.J., Leonard Leach and wife Deloris of Statesville, Collie Leach of Winston-Salem and Edward Nichols and wife Deborah of Woodbridge, Va.; three sisters, Shirley Femister and husband Howard of Statesville, Eva McWillis of Winston-Salem and Bonnie Muse of Baltimore, Md.; a special nephew, Jerry Leach and wife Sue of Clemmons; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at Inter Faith Deliverance Church in Statesville with Rev. C.R. Lucky officiating. Burial followed at the Veterans Cemetery in Statesville.

Eileen H. DePuew
Eileen H. DePuew, 86, died September 2 at her home in Florida. She was a 30-year resident of Meadowbrook in Clemmons and member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Mocksville.
Surviving are her husband, George S. DePuew of Florida; her children, Ben DePuew of Texas, Mary Kamm of Raleigh, Jennifer Taylor of Morehead City, and Mike DePuew of Mocksville; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Inurnment was in Bushnell Florida National Cemetery.

Gray Hugh Roberts
Gray Hugh Roberts, 91, of Winston-Salem died September 7 at Springwood Nursing Care Center in Winston-Salem. He was born November 18, 1913, the son of the late Logan Thomas and Charity Kallam Roberts. He was a sports enthusiast with a special interest in basketball. He was a longtime member of the YMCA. He retired from Greyhound Bus Lines and Mair-Lavaty Custom Tailored Uniforms Co. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles L. Roberts; and his wife, Olga O. Bliss Roberts, who died March 16, 2005.
Surviving are a son, Lewis Gray Roberts of Conover; a sister, Josephine R. Smith of Mount Airy; a brother, John T. Roberts and wife B.J. of Winston-Salem; a stepson, Edward Bliss and wife Evelyn of Winston-Salem; a special friend and caregiver, Sherry Haithcox of Statesville; another special friend, Will Hutchins of King; a number of nieces and nephews; and Tony Smith and wife Jewell of Clemmons and Ann Darwin and husband Dave of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Hospice Chaplain Judy Pittman officiating.

Paul Phillip Ranson
Paul Phillip Ranson, 79, of Clemmons died February 20 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 7, 1926, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Joseph Hoyt and Luttie Mae Taulbee Ranson. He was retired from Gravely Tractor Co. and served in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a member of the Clemmons Masonic Lodge No. 755 and the Plant Engineers Association
Surviving are his wife, Jean Beemer Ranson; two sons, Glenn Ranson and wife Susan of Cary and Jerry Ranson and wife Karen of Clemmons; a daughter, Diane Cochran of Greenwood, S.C.; six grandchildren, Brent Cochran and wife Heather of Greenwood, S.C.; Jarrett Cochran and wife Heidi of Lexington, S.C.; Taylor Ranson and Caitlyn Ranson of Cary; and Brian Ranson and Ali Ranson of Clemmons; five great-grandchildren, Cheyenne, Cole, Cydney, Cassie and Nolan Cochran; two brothers, Charles Ranson of Cape Canaveral, Fla., and William Ranson of Vero Beach, Fla.; and two sisters, Francis Staten of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Phyllis Whalen of Melbourne, Fla.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Marcus Portis officiating.

George Camel Vaughan
George Camel Vaughan, 99, died February 19 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born on November 11, 1906, in Spring Valley, Va., to George Curran and Laura Elizabeth Lyons Vaughan. His journey took him from horse and buggy travel to the information super highway of the World Wide Web. His inquisitive intellect kept him busy, as was evident in his quest to master the computer at the age of 90. He enjoyed sharing his opinions with many an editor through his pastime of writing and as long as his health permitted, could play a mean game of shuffleboard. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Alfred, Ted and Dwight; four sisters, Kay, Pauline, June and Matilda; his wife of 38 years and mother of his children, Mary Louise Torpey Vaughan, who died in 1968 in Detroit, Mich.; and his second wife of 25 years, Ethel Sims Vaughan, who died in 2003 in Cloverdale, Ind.
Surviving are his son, George Edward Vaughan and wife Peggy of Venice, Fla.; son Thomas Alfred Vaughan and wife Ann of Winston-Salem and daughter Joan LaVelle Vaughan Caruso and husband Ben of Macomb, Mich.; stepchildren Jan Runnells and husband Bob and Bobby Sims and wife Betty of Cloverdale, Ind; a sister-in-law, Virginia Torpey, of Sterling Heights, Mich.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grand children; numerous nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Vendi Prenatt of Lake Wales, Fla.
A memorial service was held at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. David Kindy officiating.

Doris Mae Van Pelt
Doris Mae Van Pelt, 82, of Winston-Salem died February 26. She was born June 2, 1923, in Union, N.J., to William and Ida Straubel. She was the widow of Frederick Liebrandt Van Pelt, to whom she was married for 56 years. Throughout her life, her greatest love was for her Lord and Savior and her family. She was employed by the Prudential Co. and later worked for White Fuel Co. Mostly recently, she was an active member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She participated in the Woman’s Fellowship and enjoyed singing in the choir. Her involvement in Christian Women’s Club and the Eastern Star also gave her much joy and fulfillment. Her hobbies included gardening, bridge club, needlework, sewing and crossword puzzles. She had a strong faith and was a Christian witness to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Liebrandt Van Pelt; her sister, Ida Straubel; and her son-in-law, Timothy George Beck.
Surviving are her daughters, Donna Mae Toburen of Columbia, S.C., and Kimberly Ann Beck of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, Toby Toburen and wife Cathy of Sumter, S.C.; Will Toburen and wife Julie of Winston-Salem; and Mark Toburen of Raleigh; three granddaughters, Erin Toburen of Atlanta, Ga.; and Laura and Amanda Beck of Winston-Salem; two great-grandsons, Jackson and Brandt Toburen; and three great-granddaughters, Carolina, Abby and Tatum Toburen.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons United Methodist Church.

Billy Ray Venable
Billy Ray Venable, 73, died February 21 at Britthaven of Kernersville. He was born on April 1, 1932, in Surry County, a son of the late James Fred and Edna Mae Danley Venable. He retired from ABF Freight and went on to own Precision Machine and Tool. He retired at Oak Island 13 years ago. He was a member of the Kernersville Veterans of Foreign Wars, Oscar Joyner Post 5352, and was a member of Kernersville Moose Lodge. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Treva Agnes Johnson and Christina Venable; and a brother, Ralph Lincoln Venable.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Mills Venable of the home; two daughters, Vickie Hodroff and husband Mark of Charlotte and Karen “Tina” O’Neal of Travelers Rest, S.C.; two sons, Billy Ray Venable Jr. and wife Pam of Kernersville and William Shawn Venable and wife Suzanna, also of Kernersville; two sisters, Geraldine “Gerry” Parnell and husband Ron of Clemmons and Sylvia Hubbard and husband Eddie of Walkertown; four brothers, James Calvin “J.C.” Venable and wife Dura Mae of East Bend, Bobby Leroy Venable and wife Vivian of Kernersville, Roger Denzel Venable and wife Brenda of Kernersville and Kenneth Gray Venable and wife Linda of High Point; six grandchildren, Frank Marti of Norfolk, Victoria Marti, of Charlotte, Cynthia Denise Wilson of Kernersville, Gregory Ross O’Neal of Hickory, Brittani Rose and Payton Rose of Kernersville; and a great-granddaughter, Rachael O’Neal of Hickory.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Minister Terry Venable and Brother Mike Duggins officiating.
