Billy Dean Pennington, age 48, of Damascus, Va., the Green Cove Community, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2 in Whitetop Baptist Church in Whitetop, Va. Revs. Randy Lester, Tim Blevins and Jimmy Lundy officiated. Burial followed in Blevins cemetery. The family received friends at Whitetop Baptist Church on Saturday night from 6-9 p.m.
Mr. Pennington was born April 20, 1954 in West Jefferson to T.A. and Kathleen Rupard Pennington. He was a member of Whitetop Baptist Church and is employed with Utility Trailer of Atkins, Va.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Dolinger Pennington of the home; two daughters, Maranda Pennington and Malena Pennington, both of the home; his parents, Rev. T.A. and Kathleen Pennington of Whitetop, Va.; one sister and spouse, Angie and Herman Finley of West Jefferson; two brothers and a spouse, Gary and Vickie Pennington and Jonathan Pennington, all of Whitetop, Va.; maternal grandmother, Mecie Rupard of Marion, Va.; his mother-in-law, Freida Dolinger of Abingdon, Va.; a brother-in-law, Jeff Dolinger of Abingdon, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Rogers Rescue Squad, PO Box 47, Whitetop, VA 24292 or Whitetop Baptist Church, 15771 Highlands Parkway, Whitetop, VA 24292.

Ervin William Grubb

Ervin William Grubb, age 79 of Todd, died unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 31 at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2 at Laurel Knob Baptist Church. Rev. J.D. Walton and Rev. Jim Rash officiated. Burial followed in the Stephens cemetery in Todd. The family received friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Active pallbearers were Jim Grubb, Ronnie Grubb Jr., Barry Grubb, Keith Dillard, Arnold Houck and Butch Winebarger.
Mr. Grubb was born on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 1924 in Ashe County, one of 10 children born to the late William Reece Grubb and Annie Lou Stephens Grubb. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of Laurel Knob Baptist Church. His life’s work was as a timber cutter and he retired about 15 years ago. He loved vegetable gardening and spoiling his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Grubb; his wife, Betty Lou Potter Grubb, who died in September of 2002; his son, Roy William Grubb, who died in March of 1998; two of his brothers, infant Gwyn Grubb and Burl Grubb; and his grandson, Joshua Ham.
He leaves here to cherish his memory three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Angie Grubb of West Jefferson, Jim Grubb of Todd and Johnny and Debra Grubb of Lansing; four brothers, Glenn Grubb, Reece Grubb and Tom Grubb, all of Todd and Bryce Grubb of Creston; three sisters, Jeanette Walker and Essie Thomas, both of Winston-Salem and Sandra Miller Grubb of Greensboro; five grandchildren, Crystal Grubb, Cookie Grubb, Ronnie Grubb Jr., Roy William Grubb and Daniel Grubb; three great-grandchildren, Victoria Trivette, Benjamin Walters and Jonathan Ham; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Ashe County Cancer Fund, c/o Tina Greer, PO Box 1865, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

William Harold “Bill” Ray
Florida
Died: January 10, 2003
William Harold Ray, formerly of Delta, Fla. died Friday Jan. 10 in Tallahassee, Fla. He was 80 years old.
His wife of 60 years Mary Morris Ray, the daughter of the former Isaac Clarence and Edith Morris survived him.
Mr. Ray was born in the Beaver Creek Community of Ashe County to George W. and Sallie Coombs Ray. He resided in Delta, Fla. from 1939 until 1966. For many years he was employed at Wiley Manufacturing in Port Deposit, Md. Prior to moving to Florida, Ray was a trustee of the former Tabernacle Evangelical United Brethren Church. After moving from Delta, Fla., Ray worked for Pan American Airways at Cape Kennedy, for Bechtold Engineering and Win-Door Parts prior to his retirement. For the last 13 years of his life after his retirement he worked at Publix Supermarket in Tallahassee, Fla. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific. He was a loving husband and father and a good friend.
A son, Steve Ray of Tallahassee, Fla.; two stepsisters, Ann Suttcliffe of Lexington, SC and Dorothy Bozard, of Orangeburg, SC; and many nieces and nephews also survive him. His son William Dennis Ray preceded him in death.
A memorial service was conducted by Rev. Bill McLoud in the Burleigh Law Memorial Chapel of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Fla. on Jan. 16. A memorial service at a date to be announced is planned for the Spring at Tabernacle Church in Whiteford, Md. with inurnment in the Tabernacle cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the Tabernacle Church cemetery Association in care of Mrs. Ralph Ritchie Jr., 2209 N. Tabernacle Rd., Whiteford, Md. 21160.
Kathleen “Kate” Boyd

Mrs. Kathleen “Kate” Weaver Potter Boyd, age 69 of Hephzibah, Ga., native of West Jefferson, died Jan. 23.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Augusta, Ga. Interment was in Devotional Gardens in Warsaw.
Pallbearers included her grandsons, Jonathan Piazzi, Timothy Piazzi, Daniel Davis and Edward Davis.
Mrs. Boyd was born in Ashe County on Aug. 10, 1933, to the late Zeb and Hattie Bishop Weaver. She was a graduate of Jefferson High School and a member of Smethport Methodist Church. She had made her home in Augusta, Ga., for the past 30 years where she was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After her retirement from a career in accounting, she and her husband owned and operated an ostrich ranch in Augusta, Ga.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Worth Potter Jr.; by her second husband, James E. Boyd; three brothers: Reeves Weaver, Rex Weaver and Dan Weaver; and by one grandchild.
She is survived by four daughters, Sandra Stuart of College Station, Texas, Lois Schaalje of Orem, Utah, Danita Davis Reece of Augusta, Ga., and Kathy Piazzi of Hephzibah, Ga.; two brothers, Tom Weaver of West Jefferson and Jim Weaver of Jefferson; two sisters, June Worth of West Jefferson and Mary Bledsoe of Weaverville; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Billy Fowler Sr.

Died: April 3, 2003
Mr. Billy Carson Fowler Sr., age 72, died Thursday, April 3 at Perry Point Veterans Hospital in Perryman, Md. Born in Jefferson, he was the son of the late Dewey Franklin and Bessie Mae Hurley Fowler. He was a factory worker for 35 years at Bata Shoe Company in Belcamp, Md., until his illness last year. Mr. Fowler loved a beautiful lawn, if a leaf fell, he would run to try to catch it. He enjoyed getting together with friends and family for meals and fellowship. He served in the Army during WWII.
Mr. Fowler is survived by a son, Billy C. Fowler Jr. of Bel Air, Md.; a daughter, Connie Morrison of Baltimore, Md.; three brothers, Frank W. Fowler of Darlington, Md., Howard R. Fowler of Augusta, Ga. and Rex R. Fowler of Sparta; four sisters, Dallas Crouse and Ethel Gambill, both of Sparta, Hazel McGrady of Piney Creek and Lillie Miller of Bel Air, Md.; two grandchildren, Billy Joseph Fowler and Stephanie Kay Fowler, both of Bel Air, Md.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 9 at 10 a.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Bobby Absher. Burial followed in the Senter Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with military rites. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m., on Tuesday, April 8 at the funeral home.
Active pallbearers were Billy Joe Fowler, Frank Wayne Fowler, Jimmy Richardson, Kenneth Richardson, Donnie Richardson and Bobby Joe Gambill.

E.O. Pennington (Ernie), age 60 of Midwest City, Okla., previously of West Jefferson, passed away Wednesday, April 9.
Services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 14 at the Bill Eisenhour Southeast Chapel in Oklahoma. Burial followed in the Arlington Memory Gardens in Midwest City, Okla.
Mr. Pennington was born Oct. 10, 1942 in Apple Grove to Woodrow and Ruby (Smiley) Pennington. He moved to Delaware in 1961 where he worked for General Motors as an electrician for 27 years before retiring back to Ashe County. He enjoyed his dog, Cody, and hunting, fishing and playing cards with his kids. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sharon; and a brother, Bartie.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Pennington of the home; two daughters, Dianne Hightower and husband, Dewayne, and Renee Wallace and husband, Wayne; two sons, Ricky Pennington and Billy Pennington and his wife, Debby; six grandchildren, Tiffany, Stephanie, Christie, Josh, Heather and Colton; one great-grandchild, Damien; a sister, Bonnie Apgar of Dover, Del.; a brother, Dallas Pennington of Oxford, Pa.; and many other family and friends.

Josephine Hall Doby, age 75 of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, April 6 at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 9 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Katherine Fox officiating. Burial followed in the Forsyth Memorial Park. The family received friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Doby was born March 24, 1928 in Abingdon, Va. to the late Ellis Green and Mae Perkins Hall. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond Widener; her second husband, Dallas Doby; and a son, Darrell Doby.
She is survived by a brother, David E. Hall and wife, Peggy, of Raleigh; and a nephew, David Michael Hall of Durham.
Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home of Winston-Salem was in charge of the arrangements.

Norma Ruby Wilcox Kilby, age 77 of Lansing, died Monday, March 31 at Ashe Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 3 at 2 p.m. at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel in Jefferson with remarks by Rev. Rex Hall and Rev. Bruce Eller. Interment followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens. The family received friends Wednesday, April 2, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
Mrs. Kilby was born Sept. 4, 1925 in Ashe County to William and Alia Jane Stansberry Wilcox. She was a homemaker and the beloved wife of Reeber Kilby.
Survivors include, in addition to her husband: one son, Charles Kilby and wife, Judy of Lansing; one daughter, Carolyn Marmie and husband, Steve of Lansing; four sisters, Lessie Roop and Clyde Osborne, both of Whitetop, Va., Flora Sullivan of Lansing and June Mullins of Wilson; two granddaughters, Susan Kilby and Patricia Kilby; and several nieces and nephews.
Ashelawn Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Rena Alice Robinson, better known as “Auntie,” age 67 of Creston, died Monday morning, April 7, at her residence.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 9, at 8 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bryan Rogers officiating. Graveside services were held Thursday, April 10, at 11 a.m. at Robinson Family cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service.
Miss Robinson was born in Ashe County on Sunday, Dec. 1, 1935, to Joseph Butler Robinson Sr., and the late Pauline Graham Robinson. She was a member of Creston Methodist Church. She attended Appalachian State Teachers College where she received her teaching degree. She taught at Wilkes High School and finished out her career teaching sixth grade at Rhonda-Clangham Elementary School.
She is survived by her father, Joe B. Robinson Sr. of Creston; a brother, Joe B. Robinson Jr. of Boone; and two nieces and a nephew.
Active pallbearers were Joe Neal, Frank Neal, Harold Dean Miller, Clyde Edmondson, W.M. “Dub” Lewis and John Shelton.
