Woody Swallows
CANTON — Woodrow Martin “Woody” Swallows, 79, of Mountain View Apartments, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at his residence.
He was a native of Barberton, Ohio, and the son of the late Willie and Julia Lee Swallows. He was a self-employed painter and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.
In addition to his wife of 59 years, Margaret Phillips Swallows, he is survived by two daughters, Gloria Jeanne Gill of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Juanita Sue Morris of Cooperstown, N.Y.; five sons, David Michael Swallows of Myrtle Beach, S.C., William Eugene Swallows of Waynesville, Thomas Jay Swallows of Encinitas, Calif., Jeffery Wayne Swallows of Jacksonville, Fla., and Gregory Scott Swallows of Fairbanks, Ala; 24 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
There were six brothers and three sisters in his family.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Clyde Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
James B. Shore
James B. Shore, 80, of Wildcat Mountain Road, Waynesville, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at his home.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Shore; two sons, Steve Shore and his wife Soozie of Clinton, Ms., and Michael and his wife Paula of Louisville, Colo.; a daughter, Kay, of Greensboro; three, granddaughters, Margaret, Ryan, and Chelsy; and a brother, Edgar, and his wife of Kernersville.
Jim was born and grew up in Kernersville. He attended Massnutten military Academy in Woodstock, Va., and Renssalear Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. before entering the U.S.
Navy in 1943. After his Naval service, he returned to Renssalear for a year and then transferred to Georgia Tech, where he graduated as a mechanical engineer in 1950. He was a member of the ATO fraternity and several scholastic honorary societies.
He was employed by Schumberger Well Services in Houston, Texas, for his entire professional career before retiring in 1986.
Soon thereafter, he and his wife moved to Waynesville. He was a member of Grace Church in the Mountains.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Church in the Mountains, with the Rev. Dr. Howard W. White Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.

Ora A. Buchanan
CANDLER — Ora Arthur Buchanan, 91, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Mission Hospitals.
He was a native of Mitchell County and the son of the late Fate and Laurie Burleson Buchanan. He was preceded in death by all of his 13 siblings; a son, Paul Buchanan; daughters, Wathena McKinney and Arvella Palmer; and a grandson, Danny McKinney.
He was a retired carpenter and a member of Cane Creek Free Will Baptist Church in Bakersville.
In addition to his wife of 71 years, Nell Ledford Buchanan, he is survived by three daughters, Wilma Rogers and Laura Trull, both of Candler, and Sandra Romero of Madison County; two sons, Sherrill Buchanan of Rutherfordton and Ricky Buchanan of Candler; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with his grandson Rusty Buchanan and the Rev. G.W. Jameson officiating. Entombment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the nurses of Care Partners, the sixth-floor nurses of St. Joseph’s Hospital, and a very special thanks to his nurse, Anne Marie.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Parthynia Pressley
CANTON — Parthynia Gibson Pressley, 85, formerly of Max Thompson Road, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at the Brian Center in Waynesville.
She was a native of Haywood County and the daughter of the late Monty Raymond and Bessie Luther Gibson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle B. Pressley, who died in 1975.
She was a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Martha Ann Bradley and her husband Carl of Fairfax, Va.; two sons, James Roy Pressley and his wife Carol of Albuquerque, N.M., and David Lee Pressley and his wife Geneva of Leavenwood, Kan.; a brother, Raymond Gibson, of Fredricksburg, Va.; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with the Rev. Todd West and the Rev. Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Mark Bradley, Craig Bradley, David Michael Pressley, Matthew Helm, Anthony West and Ronnie West. At other times, the family will be at the home, 274 Max Thompson Road, Canton.

Mattie Thomason
CANTON — Mattie Lee Connor Thomason, 77, of 25 King St., passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at her home.
A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Dobbin Connor and the late Essie May Connor Earley. Mrs. Thomason had resided in Louisiana for 26 years before returning to Canton in 1971. She was a former employee of Piccadilly Cafeteria, a homemaker, and she will be remembered for her great love for her family and her hometown of Canton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, the late William Edward Thomason, who passed away in 2000, and a daughter, Patricia Ann Thomason and a son, James Edward Thomason.
Surviving are three daughters, Sue Ellen Woods and husband Ray of Candler, Jackie Carolyn Fontana and husband Tommy Joe of Shreveport, La., and Rhonda Thomason of Canton; a son, Tommy Thomason of Canton; two sisters, Helen Webb of Balsam and Mary Clontz of Canton; one brother, Billy Earley of Tennessee; eight grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Burial will be in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens, Clyde.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Aiden Smith
Aiden Smith, infant son of Luther and Kristen Ledford Smith of Waynesville, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, May 31, 2005.
He is survived by his maternal grandparents Carl and Becky Ledford and paternal grandmother, Robin Cogburn.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Community cemetery, with the Rev. Jason Ledford officiating.

Jerry D. Burnette
CANTON — Jerry Dean Burnette, 72, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Memorial Mission Hospital.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a son of the late Clint and Inez West Burnette. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Doc, Eldon and Wade Burnette, and one sister, Geneva Rask.
He graduated from Bethel High School and was employed by BASF as a property accountant for 35 years when he retired in 1993. Mr. Burnette was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and a big supporter of Pisgah High School sports and was a true fan of the UNC Tar Heels. He enjoyed coaching and was active with little league baseball. He was very devoted to his family and will be missed by them very much. Mr. Burnette was in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict.
He is survived by two sons, Randy Burnette and Alan Burnette and his wife Cynthia, both of Canton; and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Nathan Burnette.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with the Rev. Dennis Ruff and the Rev. Perry Brindley officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.

Herbert Conard
Herbert Conard, 75, of 2567 White Oak Road, Waynesville, died unexpectedly on June 2, 2005 at his residence.
A life-long resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late N.L. and Jimmie Evans Conard. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Hoglen Conard, who died in 2004; infant twin sisters, Nettie and Nellie Conard; Ruby Conard and Lucille C. Bradley; and one brother, N.L. “Doodler” Conard. He was employed at the Dayco Corporation as a forklift driver in the mill room, from which he retired in 1986. He was a life-long member of Liberty Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school, served as treasurer and was a deacon for 48 years. He enjoyed farming and raised tobacco and cattle.
He is survived by a sister, Frances C. Phillips of Waynesville; several nieces and nephews and great- nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Nelson and the Rev. Ronald Greene officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Friday at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Mullins, Neal McElroy, William Carver, Johnny Glance, Steve Carver, Larry Boone, and Randall Hoglen.

Mamie Joslin
Mamie Gibson Joslin, 83, of Waynesville passed away Thursday, June 2, 2005, at her residence. A native of Haywood County, she was born on Aug. 11, 1921 to the late Dan and Viola Smith Gibson.
She retired after 32 years of service from American Enka. Mrs. Joslin was a true mountain lady. She grew up on Fie Top in Maggie Valley and attended the Maggie Elementary School and Waynesville High School. She loved her garden and flowers and she enjoyed mowing her yard; she especially loved her family. She loved going to her church, Waynesville First Baptist, and attending Sunday school.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bruce A. Joslin, who passed away in 1980; two brothers, Jessie and Wesley Gibson; three sisters Bessie Ball, Dessie Howell and Willie Mae Hall; and one grandchild,Pamela McDowell.
She is survived by a daughter, Pauline “Polly” McDowell and her husband Philip of Waynesville; a grandson, Patrick McDowell and his wife Sherri of Waynesville; two great- grandchildren, Sydney and Mia McDowell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waynesville First Baptist Church, with Dr. Robert Prince officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. Burial will be in Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Claudette Henderson
Claudette Henderson, 68, of Waynesville passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was born in McDowell County on June 2, 1936 to the late Paul and Verley Robinson Duncan.
She was a member of the Pleasant Balsam Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, fishing, making music, gem hunting and singing, but most importantly, she loved her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Harold Roger Henderson; a daughter, Susan Darlene Henderson; and two sisters, Viola Fields and Virginia Cagle.
She is survived by her husband Harold Joseph Henderson; one son, Mark Henderson of Waynesville; a daughter, Wanda H. Shular and her husband Jerry of Waynesville; three brothers, Jim Duncan of Marion, Ellis Duncan of Raleigh and Ernest Duncan of Tennessee; a sister, Vicki Arlene Curtis of Marion; four grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
No services are planned.
Kate Henderson
CANTON — Kate Henderson, 88, of Newfound Street died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 13, 1916 in Haywood County to the late Clifton Lafayette and Clora Reno Henderson. She was the granddaughter of Haywood County pioneers, the late political and civic leader William H. Drayton Henderson and his wife Mary.
Miss Henderson began her business career at the Canton Chamber of Commerce in 1936.
She was the owner of Kay’s Beauty Salon in Canton and later worked in the shipping office at Champion International Papers, retiring in 1983 with 45 years of service. She was a member of Canton Presbyterian Church and a supportive friend of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She loved children and animals, giving generously to their cause.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Nell H. Moore and Ruth H. Sheppard; her brothers, Burl Henderson and his daughters Kay Becky and Judy, and Ned Henderson and his son Clifton; and a special friend, Lyndon Bryson.
She is survived by her sister, Betty Jo H. Litaker of Statesville; her niece and caregivers, Martha Gean M. Moss and James of Canton; nieces Carla L. Hurst and Leo of Statesville, Peggy H. Jenkins and Johnny of Canton and Beth Henderson of Tennessee; nephews Everett Sonny Moore and Patsy of Waynesville and Joel Henderson of Canton; a sister-in-law, Etta M. Henderson of Canton; and her physician and caring friend, Dr. Brian Caffrey of Clyde. She also leaves behind her devoted poodle, Wiggles III.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, with the Rev. Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow in the Henderson-Moss plot at Bon-A-Venture cemetery in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Cliff Henderson, Mitch Robinson, Everett Sonny Moore, David Moss and David and Matt Ford.
