Jake Rupert Anderson
Jake Rupert Anderson, 71, of Clemmons died January 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born November 20, 1931, in Davidson County to Noah and Sallie Allen Anderson. He was a member of Mocks United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday-school teacher, lay speaker, chairman of the evangelism committee and member of the United Methodist Men’s group. He was retired from the Winston-Salem Journal.
Surviving are his wife, Susie Phelps Anderson of the home; three sister-in-laws, Lucy Phelps, Maxine Bailey and husband Bob, and Nell Phelps Burton and husband Ron; a brother-in-law, John Phelps and wife Jean; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Mocks United Methodist Church with Rev. Donnie Durham and Rev. Bruce Gwyn officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Frank Thomas Holder Sr.
Frank Thomas Holder Sr., 68, of Clemmons died at his home January 12. He was born in Forsyth County on August 13, 1934 to John and Ella Hauser Holder. He was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church. He was retired from McNair Construction Company after 42 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Sylvia Jean Wilson Holder; children, Frank Thomas Holder Jr. and Jeffrey Hauser Holder Sr. of Clemmons, David Wayne Holder and wife Jeannie of King, Frances Jean Cowen and husband Chris of Kernersville and Edward Randall Holder of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katherine Barr and husband Kenneth of Clemmons and Dorothy Carter and husband Mike of Pfafftown; and a brother, John G. Holder of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Union Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Freddie Moretz officiating, and burial followed in the church cemtery.

Mildred Barbee Garner
Mildred Barbee Garner, formerly of Winston-Salem, died December 31 at Clemmons Village, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born June 20, 1916, in Nashua, N.H., to George Harry and Kathreen Wilkins Barbee. She was married to the late Thad W. Garner, the founder and president of T.W. Garner Food Co. She fondly referred to the company as “the plant,” and her husband frequently bragged about his wife being his best and most persuasive salesperson. This distinction was the result of her fondness for reshelving Garner jelly products and Texas Pete sauces in front of competitive brands in local grocery stores. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1987. She was a lifelong member of First Christian Church in Winston-Salem. As a caring and generous friend to many, she was an active volunteer in the Winston-Salem community. She had been involved in local PTA school programs, the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Junior Woman’s Club, the City Tennis League, duplicate-bridge clubs, the Twin City Club, and, her favorite involvement, being “home parents” with her husband to Wake Forest University international students, providing a unique American home environment of sharing and happiness for the students away from campus. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997; her grandson, William N. “Tad” Homan Jr. in 1981; her sister, Helen Barbee Brewer; and a brother, George H. Barbee Jr.
Surviving are her beloved daughter, Kathryn and fiance Ned C. “Jeep” Ingram Jr.; her nephews, Jim Barbee and George Barbee; nieces Claire Barbee Cook and Susan Brewer Williams; her much loved Wake Forest University international “daughters,” Elsa R. Cortes of Colombia, South America, and Eugenia A. Bruce of Chersterfield, England; and other special “daughters,” Patricia R. Guy and Kay Pitzer Petril.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with a graveside service following at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum, with Jack White and Dr. Jack R. Noffsinger officiating.
Joy Maxine Newman Kelly
Joy Maxine Newman Kelly, 63, of Lewisville died December 31. She was born November 21, 1939, in Mount Airy to Roger Lennox Newman and Cassie May Newman. Preceding her in death were her parents and five sisters.
Surviving are her husband, William Richard Kelly; her children, Blemont Doub and wife Michelle, Olin Doub, Terry Doub and wife Rena, John Doub and wife Donna and Margaret Doub and husband Larry; grandchildren Scottie Doub, Laura Doub, Tiffany Myers, Jamie Prince and Brittany Prince; a great-grandchild, Channing Glenn; and brothers and sisters Tammy O’Brien, Phyllis Wood, Jimmy Newman, Roger Newman, Lunell Bowman, Debra Everhart and Donna Newman.
Funeral services were held at Doub’s Chapel Untied Methodist Church with Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
June Ballman Runyan
June Ballman Runyan, 57, of Clemmons died January 10 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born January 1, 1946, in Painted Post, N.Y., to Arthur Charles and Mildred Ballman. She was employed with Guilford Behavioral Center and for 12 years she was coordinator of Winston-Salem Center for the Hearing Impaired. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, and was also active in the Deaf Ministry at the church. She was also active for many years in the Yolk Fellows Prison Ministries, Potters House Ministries and was a member of Old Salem and Clemmons Sertoma Club.
Surviving are her husband, James Runyan of the home; a son, John Runyan and wife Ivy of Huntersville; a daughter, Jeanne Runyan of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Ethan Runyan; a brother, Arthur C. Ballman Jr. of Newport News, Va.; two nephews; and a niece.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Francis Smith and Kent Oviatt officiating, and burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
Ruth Hester Frasier Knuckles
Evangelist Ruth Hester Frasier Knuckles, 80, of Meadowbrook Manor in Clemmons died January 8.
Funeral services were held at Community Baptist Church with Rev. Melvin L Frazier officiating, and burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
Dorothy Tucker Ketner
Dorothy Tucker Ketner, 77, of Clemmons died at her home on January 10. She was born in Forsyth County on March 1, 1925, to James Calvin “Jim” and Rosa Celia Kiger Tucker. She had worked on the cafeteria staff at Southwest High School for a number of years. She was a faithful member of Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.E. “Bill” Ketner, who died September 2000; her parents; sister, Bernell T. Mendenhall and her husband Brooklyn; brothers, Clarence E. Tucker and his wife Mary and J.C. Tucker Jr.; and son-in-law, Thomas A. Hubbard.
Surviving are daughters, Brenda K. Harper and husband Richard, JoAnn K. Totten and husband John, Gail K. Doby and husband Bobby, and Betty K. Lewis and husband David; grandchildren, Rich Harper and wife Ann, Greg Harper and wife Melissa, Luke Hubbard and wife Cindy, Tina H. Stanbery and husband Eric, Leigh D. Mueller and husband Nathan, Joy Totten, and Matthew Doby and wife Amber; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Jacob and Nicholas Harper, Tommy Hubbard, Joshua and Megan Stanbery, Kaley Mueller, Alexis Bracley, Dylan Doby and Dalton Oliver; sister, Lib Holder and husband Darcy; brother, Norman Tucker and wife Doris A.; sisters-in-law, Doris T. Tucker, Mildred K. Hutchens and husband Fred, Frances K. Swaim, Verna K. Reed and husband David, Hilda O. Ketner and Martha A. Ketner; and a brother-in-law, Glenn Ketner and wife Edith.
Funeral services were held at Boyer’s Chapel Church of Christ with Don Sloan and Jerry Williams officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ralph Samuel Poteat Jr.
Ralph Samuel “Sammy” Poteat Jr., 45, of Clemmons died March 8 at his residence. He was born December 18, 1957, in Elkin to Ralph Samuel and Phyllis Brandon Poteat. He worked for Billings Concrete Co. as a concrete finisher. He enjoyed his work because it allowed him to work outside. Of the many people he treasured throughout his lifetime, Zane held a very special place in his heart.
Surviving are a sister, Deborah Poteat-Campbell and husband Jack; a niece, Carmella Michael; and a nephew, Roman Campbell.
A graveside service was held at Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamptonville.
Juanita C. McGee
Juanita C. McGee, 83, of Mocksville died March 10 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 23, 1919, in Forsyth County to Grover and Eva Craddock Cline. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harmon C. McGee, and a brother, Steve Cline.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda A. Masterpol and husband Alex of New York; two sons, Don H. McGee of Greensboro and Randy McGee of Mocksville; a grandson, Bradley H. McGee of Greensboro; a daughter-in-law, Wanda McGee of Greensboro; three sisters, Norma Rogers of Clemmons and Hilda Morrison and Nancy Phelps of Virginia Beach; a brother, David Cline and wife Kay of Kannapolis; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
John William Boyer
John William Boyer, 62, of Clemmons died March 10 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 25, 1940, to Robert Deward Boyer and Daisy Boner Boyer, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert Douglas Boyer.
Surviving are his wife, Elaine Harper Boyer; a daughter, Annah Harper Boyer; and a son, John William “Will” Boyer II.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons First Baptist Church.
Mary Elizabeth Osbourne Knouse
Mary Elizabeth Osbourne Knouse, 65, of Walkertown died March 12 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Born June 15, 1937, in York, S.C., to Ermie and Mamie Pettus Osbourne, she was a member of Welcome Door Baptist Church in Kernersville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Z. Knouse, in 1990.
Surviving are five daughters, Patricia Hendrix and husband Peanut of Walkertown and Helen Canter and husband Larry and Kathy Carter and husband Sam, all of Winston-Salem, Cheryl Henderson and husband Robbie of Whiteville and Robyn Haynes and husband Melvin of Walkertown; a son, Bobby Knouse and wife Shanda of the home; 17 grandchildren, Kristina Shelby and husband Shawn of Clemmons, Matthew, Mary and Peggy Canter of Winston-Salem, Nathaniel, Christopher, Brandon, Travis and Taquaro Childs of Winston-Salem, Amber, Ashley, Ji, Ki and Jasmine Henderson of Whiteville, Cody Locklear Daeshea Haynes, and Emiee Z. Knouse, all of Walkertown, two great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Shelby of Clemmons, and Gabby Canter of Winston-Salem; and an adopted son, Michael Boles.
Funeral services were held at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove, and burial followed at Gardens of Memory.
Dorothy Helen Baker Johnson
Dorothy Helen Baker Johnson, 83, of Pfafftown died March 13 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born August 13, 1919, outside of Murray, Ky., to Edna and Hardin L. Baker. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Murray Road.
Surviving are her son, Robert Boswell and wife Judy of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Scott Charles Boswell and wife Sandra of Advance and Christine Elizabeth Clay and husband Bill of St. Louis, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Nicholas Boswell.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Sue Denise Taylor Simmons
Sue Denise Taylor Simmons, 47, of Lewisville died March 12 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Lewisville, November 9, 1955, the daughter of the late Gray Eugene and Annie Mary Harbin Taylor. She was a very compassionate person who loved music and touched many lives. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church, where she served as church organist, Sunday school teacher and WMU leader. She grew up in Lewisville Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday school teacher and youth leader along with being active in the church music program. She was an administrative assistant with the Forsyth County Housing Authority, a member of the Forsyth County Realtors Association and worked as a volunteer for the Little Theater.
Surviving are her husband, Randy Wayne Simmons of the home; a sister, Ruth T. Tally and husband Johnnie of Lewisville; a brother, Walter G. Taylor and wife Brenda of Shalimar, Fla.; a niece, Johnsie T. Price and husband Bill of Lexington; three nephews, David Taylor and wife Bonnie of Roswell, Ga., Lt. Col. M. Kent Taylor and wife Chee of Alexandria, Va. and Jeffrey Tally and wife Beth of Clemmons; two great-nieces, Erin Taylor and Amelia Claire Tally; a great-nephew, Christopher Taylor; and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at Lewisville Baptist Church with Rev. Arnett Harris and Rev. Jeff Priest officiatiang, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Carolyn Louise Foltz Walker Reed
Carolyn Louise Foltz Walker Reed, 67, of Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem died March 15 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 14, 1936, in Winston-Salem to Robert F. Foltz Jr. and Juanita Duggins Foltz.
Surviving are a son, Robert Wray Walker of Stokes County; a sister, Shirley F. Sheets of Clemmons; and two brothers, Donald R. Foltz of McKinney, Texas, and Michael R. Foltz of Winston-Salem.
William Thomas Sapp
William Thomas “Dub” Sapp, 77, of Pfafftown died March 15 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 11, 1925, in Forsyth County, the son of Henry Roscoe Sapp and Eva Mae Henderson Sapp. He retired from the Department of Transportation as an area supervisor after 35 years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Sapp.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Adeline Blakely Sapp of Rose Tara Plantation Assisted Living Center in King; a son, Tommy Sapp of Tobaccoville; a daughter, Carol McHone and husband Gary of Pilot Mountain; two sisters, Betty Rice of King and Janet LeQuier of Florida.
A graveside service was held at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Dwight Cartner officiating.
Katharine G. Bunch
Katharine G. Bunch, 68, of Clemmons died March 14 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born June 18, 1934, in Laurel Hill to Benjamin L. and Emma Lou Gibson. She was co-owner of Winston-Salem Casket Co. and was a longtime member of Clemmons Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William L. Gibson.
Surviving are her husband, Bill Bunch; two sons, Willie Bunch and wife Tricia and Ralph L. Bunch; two grandchildren, Evan and Cameron Bunch; a sister, Nancy G. Huntley of Wadesboro; a brother, Ralph M. Gibson and wife Lillian of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Joyce Gibson of Laurel Hill; and five nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. John Rainey and Rev. Q. Ray Burke officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.
Stephen Warren Lindemann
Stephen Warren Lindemann, 46, of Lewisville died March 12 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born October 3, 1956, in Cornwall, N.Y., to Richard E. and Alice Babcock Lindemann. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and an avid fisherman and hunter.
Surviving are his wife, Pamela Lindemann of Lewisville; a daughter, Kelly Lindemann of Oneida, N.Y.; a son, Pfc. Joshua Lindemann, currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps; a stepson, Christopher Dean; a stepdaughter, Megan Dean, both of Lewisville; a granddaughter, Jenna Raine Jasiewicz; a brother, Jeff Lindemann of New Windsor, N.Y.; and a sister, Deborah Lindemann of Cornwall, N.Y.
A memorial service was held at Lewisville Baptist Church with Rev. Jeff Priest officiating.
Anne Wall Chadwick
Anne Wall Chadwick, 75, of Winston-Salem died March 12 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Guilford County to James Garland and Annie Bland Wall, and she was a graduate of Walkertown High School. She and her husband, Kelly, owned and operated Chadwick Thruway Jewelry and the Town and Country Honda Motorcycle Dealership. She was a member of Messiah Moravian Church and a former member of Bethania Moravian Church. She was a member of the Bethania Moravian Church choir and also taught Sunday school for many years. She was very active in the Woman’s Fellowship at both Bethania and Messiah Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Melinda Chadwick; two brothers, Bland and Fred F. Wall; and a sister, Virgie Bland.
Surviving are her husband, Kelly Chadwick of the home; a sister and her husband, Jane and Robert Beroth of Clemmons; a brother, David F. Wall of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service ws held at Messiah Moravian Church with Rev. Charles Fishel officiating.
James Allan Haney
James Allan Haney, 95, of Winston-Salem died March 14 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on January 13, 1908, in Durham to Vallye Brown and Rev. Thomas Franklin Haney. He was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church and served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a former member of the Historical Railroad Society and enjoyed art and painting. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister, Robert and Martha Haney.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Nell Reynolds Haney of the home; his daughter, Kay Vance and husband Coy of Lewisville; two grandsons, Curtis Vance and wife Patricia of Fort Bragg, Allan Vance and wife Robin of Lewisville; and his sister, Adelaide Andrews of Clemmons.
Funeral services were held at Highland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stephen McCutchan and Rev. Maggi Henderson officiating, and burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. \
Fred Odell Spainhour Sr.
Fred Odell Spainhour Sr., 77, of Lewisville died May 21 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on December 26, 1925, to Flora Dull and Marvin Spainhour. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II. He was a lifelong member of Shiloh Lutheran Church and enjoyed many activities including gardening, fishing, woodworking and crafts. Many families in the Lewisville area have several items crafted by Fred and Frances Spainhour. He was retired from Western Electric after 38 years of service as a quality-control supervisor. His wife, Frances Shepherd Spainhour, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his children, Fred Odell Spainhour Jr. and wife Sheryl and Randy Spainhour and wife Kathy, all of Lewisville, Dickie Spainhour and wife Kitty of Carolina Beach, Becky Weldon and husband Larry of King, Cheryl Vaughn and husband Ronald and Gary Spainhour, all of Lewisville, and Candy Blick and husband Brandon of Walnut Cove; his grandchildren, Brandon Vaughn, Travis Spainhour, Jeff Spainhour, Ricky Spainhour, Jason Spainhour, Ronnie Vaughn Jr., Chad Spainhour, Kristyl Hall, Kerri Weldon, Ian Blick and Jimmie Lee Blick; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Timothy, Elizabeth and Adryana Vaughn, Ryan Cole Spainhour, Tristin Lee Spainhour and Tierra Nicole Spainhour.
Funeral services were held at Shiloh Lutheran Church with Rev. William Andrews officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
