Eugenia Saville

Eugenia Saville died March 4, 2006 at Duke University Hospital. She was 92.

She taught music at Duke University for nearly 30 years, retiring in the 1970s to care for her husband, Lloyd Saville, an economics professor at Duke who suffered from Parkinson's disease.

She received a master's degree in musicology from Columbia University. She was best known for directing the Duke Madrigal Singers. For decades, her award-winning concerts with this group were a vital contribution to musical culture of the university. In addition, she was an accomplished pianist and a musicologist of distinction. She published a book titled "Italian Vocal Duets from the Early Eighteenth Century" and contributed many articles on the Tuscan composer Givoanni Carlo Maria Clari (1677-1754) to musical journals and encyclopedias.

Survivors include a daughter, Lynn Saville of New York City; and a grandson.

The family requests that anyone wanting to honor her memory donate to charity in her name.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

David Shirley

David Lawrence Gunn Shirley of Carrboro died March 1, 2006 at UNC Hospitals of injuries sustained from a fall. He was 20.

He was a former student at Warren Wilson College and Western Carolina University.

A service will be conducted March 12 at 11 a.m. at Jones Chapel on the campus of Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh. A reception will follow in the Common Room of the Chapel.

Survivors include his parents, Anita and Larry Shirley of Chapel Hill; a brother, Christopher of Chapel Hill; grandparents Joseph and Marie Gunn of Potomac, Md., and Lawrence Shirley Sr. and step-grandmother Inez Shirley both of Tuscaloosa, Ala.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the N.C. Sustainable Energy Association, P.O. Box 6465, Raleigh, N.C. 27628; the Johnson Intern Program, c/o Chapel of the Cross, 304 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514; the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Wake County chapter, P.O. Box 12562, Raleigh, N.C. 27605; or Raleigh Charter High School, 1111 Haynes St., Raleigh, N.C. 27604.

Arrangements are by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

Edward C. Vaughn

Edward Cordery Vaughn of Chapel Hill died March 2, 2006 at his home. He was 84.

He was born in Egg Harbor, N.J., and attended Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed in India and Germany. He also served in U.S. Army Reserve during the Korean War as Platoon Sergeant. His career encompassed theater and television lighting design and display. He was an active member of NewHope Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. He was a past master of Eagle Lodge 19, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons in Hillsborough.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. March 11 at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Leatherman Vaughn; two daughters, Janet Vaughn Powers of Alexandria, Va., and Laurel Vaughn Luchs of Potomac, Md.; and three grandsons; and former wife Patty of Hartsdale, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice, 1777 Fordham Blvd., Suite 107, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27514.

Charles H. Wilson

Charles Herman Wilson of Carrboro died March 3, 2006 at UNC Hospitals after several years of declining health. He was 89.

A native of the Schley community of Orange County, he was employed by the Town of Carrboro for 33 years, working as a police officer, firefighter and superintendent of Public Works. In honor of his devoted service, a park was named for him: The Charles Herman Wilson Park.

He was a member of the Carrboro United Methodist Church; a life deacon of the former Carrboro Baptist Church; a master mason of Eagle Lodge No. 19; and past patron and life member of University Chapter No. 264.

A memorial service was held March 6.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Wilson of the home; two sisters, Lois Harris of Burlington and Ruth Lowe of Gibsonville; and two brothers, Ralph Wilson of Elon and Alton Wilson of Eli Whitney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the tape ministry of Carrboro United Methodist Church or the Masonic and Eastern Star Home, 700 S. Holden Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27407-2399.

Mary L. Skidmore

Mary L. Skidmore died March 8, 2006 at Alamance Healthcare Center. She was 89.

Born in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was a life-long member of the Gassaway United Methodist Church, where she was organist, Sunday school teacher and an administrator for more than 35 years. She was a 50-year member of the Gassaway chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In Chapel Hill, she was active at Orange Chapel United Methodist Church.

A funeral service was conducted March 11 at Gassaway United Methodist Church. Burial followed at Sugar Creek cemetery.

Survivors include a brother, Raymond F. Buzed of Williamsburg, Va.; a daughter, Nancy S. Bradley of Elon; a granddaughter, Amanda Faye Lieth of Chapel Hill; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Gassaway United Methodist Church.

George McLellan Elizabeth McLellan

George W. McLellan of Chapel Hill died Feb. 9, 2006 in Durham. He was 89.

A native of Old Town, Maine, he moved to Chapel Hill from Ithaca, N.Y., in 1980. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1937 and continued his education at Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute. Corning Glass Works employed him for 36 years in management positions concerned with product development, testing and evaluation. After retirement, he continued with Corning as a contract technical writer and training director.

During his years in North Carolina, he was a member of the Triangle Land Conservancy, Sierra Club and the Nature Conservancy.

On Feb. 22, his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth, died in Durham.

Survivors include a son, Bruce of Edina, Minn.; a daughter, Tracy McLellan of Johannesburg, South Africa; and a granddaughter.

Thelma J. Blalock

Thelma J. Blalock died March 10, 2006 in Chapel Hill after a long illness.

She was a resident of Salisbury for 43 years until 2000 and resided in Chapel Hill for the past five years. She was a graduate of the Asheville Mission Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and the UNC School of Public Health. Her nursing career included more than 35 years of public-health nursing in Rowan County, Wake County and Buncombe County.

A memorial service was held March 13 at Milford Hills United Methodist Church in Salisbury. Private burial will be at a later date.

Survivors include a daughter, Claudia P. Blalock of Fort Worth, Texas; and two sisters, Hilda J. Stutler of Raleigh and Faye J. Martin of Chapel Hill.

Memorial contributions may be made to Milford Hills United Methodist Church, 1630 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, N.C.

Thomas R. Finigan

Thomas R. Finigan died of cancer March 11, 2006 at his home in Chapel Hill. He was 65.

A native of Yonkers, N.Y., he graduated from Manhattan College and received a master's from the University of Minnesota. His career as a military and commercial pilot spanned 36 years.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. March 16 at the Newman Catholic Student Center Parish on the UNC campus. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Survivors include two sons, David Finigan of Naperville, Ill., and Brian Finigan of Kansas City Mo.; former wife, Kathleen Finigan; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to UNC Hospice, P.O. Box 1077, Pittsboro, N.C. 27312.

Arrangements are by Capital Funeral Home and the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

Don Hankins

Don Hankins died March 11, 2006 in his office in Monroe. He was 46.

A native of Laurinburg, he graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1984 and received a master's degree from Texas A&M in 1988.

In 1993, started his own environmental consulting company, Resolve Environmental Services, in Monroe.

He was active in Rotary in Monroe and in youth sports in Monroe and Chapel Hill.

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. March 18 at Gerard Hall on the UNC campus in Chapel Hill. A reception will follow in the hall.

Survivors include his wife, Jane, and sons Sam and Jack of Chapel Hill; his father, Robert Hankins, and stepmother, Helen, of Brevard; three sisters, Kirsten Bachmann of Raleigh, and Robin Hankins and Lisa Hart of Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made toward his children's education. Send funds to: The Sam and Jack Hankins College Fund, 4147 Deepwood Circle, Durham NC 27707.

Myra D. Ledyard

Myra Duffie Ledyard of Chapel Hill died March 10, 2006.

A native of New York State, she graduated from Syracuse University. She moved to Chapel Hill from Southern Shores, where she had served as police commissioner for five years, and on the Southern Shores Town Council for 11 years. In 2003, she was co-winner of the Ernest B. Messer Senior Citizen of the Year Award for the State of North Carolina.

Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery in Cazenovia, N.Y. Survivors include two sons, Richard Wolters Ledyard of Knoxville, Tenn., and John Cornelius Ledyard of Greensboro, Ga.; two sisters, Virginia D. Putnam of Durham and Nancy D. Shuster of Troy, N.Y.; brother, C. R. Duffie of Portland, Ore.; three grandsons and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Interfaith Council for Social Services, 110 West Main St., Carrboro, N.C., 27510; or the Salvation Army, 909 Liberty St., Durham, N.C., 27701.

Mary L. Merzbacher

Mary Letitia Merzbacher died March 11, 2006 in Chapel Hill in the care of her parents. She was 42.

Diagnosed at age 3 with a brain tumor, she recovered and graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1982. She was a "super-volunteer" at UNC Hospitals, earning a 1,000-hour pin. In 1986, she moved to TRIFORM in Hudson, N.Y., a Camphill community for young adults with disabilities.

A celebration of her life is planned.

Survivors include her parents, Ann and Eugen Merzbacher of Chapel Hill; a sister, Celia Merzbacher of Alexandria, Va.; two brothers, Charles Merzbacher of Cambridge, Mass., and Matthew Merzbacher of Oakland, Calif.

Memorial donations may be made to TRIFORM, 20 Triform Road, Hudson, N.Y. 12534.

Ethel Barbee Rivers

Ethel Barbee Rivers of Carrboro died March 10, 2006 at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center. She was 95.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Chapel Hill, where she belonged to the WIC Club, Missionary Circle, Church Aide Club and the Senior Choir. She was also a member of the Carrboro Senior Citizens and the Order of Eastern Star 185.

A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. March 16 at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m.

Arrangements are with Jones Funeral Home.

Nathan Rogers

Nathan "Mop" Rogers of Chapel Hill died March 9, 2006 at UNC Hospitals. He was 77.

Born in Orange County, he was a member of First Baptist Church. He was a retired state employee who worked at the Carolina Inn for more than 25 years.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. March 15 at First Baptist Church. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service. Interment will be at Hickory Grove Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

Survivors include his former wife, Billie Lee Rogers; five children, Kenneth Rogers of Gotha, Fla., Natalie Abraham of Carrboro, Chris Rogers of Germany, Corey Rogers of Tampa, Fla., and Ramona Miller of Greensboro; a step-son, Gregory Lee of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Gertrude Nunn and Allonious Nickins of Chapel Hill and Elizabeth Barden of Baltimore, Md.; devoted friend and companion, Helen Haynes; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home.
