Delores J. Calaway
Delores J. Calaway, 75, of Merritt Island, Fla. died March 24. Born June 10, 1931, in Winston-Salem, she was the daughter of Leonard Jones Johnson and Maude Caroline Grubbs Johnson. She attended Green Street Methodist Church in Winston-Salem and played clarinet in the Moravian Band at the Easter sunrise services. She was married to Bill Edward Calaway on July 14, 1951, in Norfolk, Va. During her 55-year marriage, she lived with her husband and children in Norfolk, Va.; Advance, Winston-Salem, Glade Valley and Greensboro; Pensacola and Merritt Island, Fla.; Decatur, Ala.; St. Louis, Mo.; and Cincinnati, Ohio, where she founded and was president of Suburban Tax Service Inc. Widely traveled, she visited San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Charleston, Toronto, Hawaii and Alaska. She was a sports fan, a gourmet cook and loved Dixieland and swing music. She retired to Merritt Island in 1994. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Durwood C. Johnson.
Surviving are her husband, Bill Calaway, and her son, Leslie Alan Calaway, both of Merritt Island; her daughter, Lydia Calaway Wallace and husband Michael of State College, Pa.; her granddaughter, Sara Liane Wallace of Bethlehem, Pa.; her sister, Bleeka Johnson Lyndon of Merritt Island; her brother, Leonard Alva Johnson and daughter Carol of Winston-Salem; her nieces, Gloria Willis and husband Gary of Moneta, Va., Donna Lynn and husband Joe of Montgomery Village, Md., Cheryl Scoma and husband Al of San Francisco, Calif., Toby Johnson Green and Jean Johnson Leonard of Winston-Salem, and DeNeille Johnson Atwood of Clemmons; her nephew, Jon Johnson of Winston-Salem; three great-nephews, Ryan Willis of Montgomery Village, Paul Lynn of San Francisco, and Doug Lynn of Cocoa Beach, Fla., his wife Michele and their children, Joey and Morgan; and a great-niece, Lynda Lynn of Bowie, Md.
Funeral services were held at Wiley-Baxley Funeral Home. Burial followed in Georgiana Cemetery.
Margaret Green Powell
Margaret Green Powell, 94, of Bermuda Run, formerly of Mocksville, died March 25 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born April 16, 1912, in Davie County to the late James Sanford and Stella Seaford Green. She was a member of Jericho Church of Christ in Mocksville and was a lifetime resident of Davie County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harrell Powell Sr., in 1989, three sisters and three brothers.
Surviving are two sons, Harrell Powell Jr. and wife Grace of Bermuda Run and Edward L. Powell and wife Bebe of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren, David Powell and wife Kim of Charlotte, Mark Powell and wife Cathy of Lewisville, Lisa Powell Carley and husband Tim of Apex, Susan Powell Little and husband Donald of High Point, Harrell “Trey” Powell III and wife Mandy of King, Edward L. Powell Jr. of Winston-Salem, Joseph B. Powell and wife Ann Fleming of Charlotte, Mary Elizabeth Powell of Winston-Salem and Ashley Meredith Powell of Winston-Salem; two grandsons by marriage, Dr. Mark Harrison and wife Bessie of Lakeland, Fla., and David E. Harrison Jr. and wife Maria of Gibsonville; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Eaton Funeral Chapel with Roger Powell officiating. Burial followed in Center United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Bobby Ray Anthony
Bobby Ray Anthony, 57, of Yadkinville died March 27 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 13, 1949, to Ray Anthony and Bernice Harding Anthony Hill. He was a farmer and a member of Tabernacle United Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his father, three sisters and a brother.
Surviving are his mother, Bernice Harding Hill; his stepfather, James Hill of Yadkinville; five sisters, Patricia Hymes and husband Harold of Kernersville, Debra Williams and Sharon Williams, both of Yadkinville, Betty Frost and husband William of Mocksville and Sherry Dube of Clemmons; a brother, John Anthony of Yadkinville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at Tabernacle United Church of Christ with Pastor Marvin Harper officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ella Hensley Frye
Ella Hensley Frye, 74, of Village Care of King died March 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 7, 1932, in Forsyth County to the late Fred and Grace McHargue Hensley. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Clemmons where she retired as the school secretary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lee Frye in 2004.
Surviving are her children, Pamela F. Blanc and husband James of King, Beverly F. Carter and husband Joe of King and Stephen L. Frye and wife Deana of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Stephanie, Naomi and Danielle; a great-grandchild, Matthew; two brothers, Arvel and Marvin Hensley; and a sister, Brenda Anderson.
Funeral services were held at Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. LC. Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Paul James Doby Sr.
Paul James Doby Sr., 80, of Winston-Salem died March 30 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born December 21, 1926, in Davie County to Kern and Minnie Myers Doby. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had retired from Gravely Tractor.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Helen Lowe Doby of the home; two sons, Rev. Paul Doby Jr. and wife Donna of Greensboro and Bobby Lee Doby and wife Gail of Clemmons; five grandchildren, Stephen Doby and wife Jeanelle, Leigh Doby Mueller and husband Nathan, Timothy Doby and wife Amy, Matthew Doby and wife Amber and David Doby and wife Donna; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Paul Doby Jr. and Dr. Harold Fletcher officiating. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. Coy Russell
Coy “C.T.” Russell, 90, of Winston-Salem died April 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 2, 1917, in Stanly County, to James Thomas and Ethel Belle Lowder Russell. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theater and received the Purple Heart while serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from McLean Trucking Co. with 35 years of service. He was an Atlanta Braves fan and an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Emma Russell; three brothers, James Russell, Roy Russell and Raymond Russell; a sister, Juanita Helms; a great-granddaughter, Lauren Hope Mendenhall.
Surviving are a son, Coy Thomas “Tom” Russell of the home; a daughter, Patricia Siegel and husband Craig of New Bern; three stepdaughters, Sandra Mendenhall and husband David, Billie McGuire and husband Stewart of Winston-Salem, Marilyn Allard and husband Mike of Raleigh; a stepson, Rev. Harrison Hinson and wife Wanda of Waxhaw; a sister Inez Dick and husband Elmer of Elijay; Ga.; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Siegel, Josh Siegel, both of New Bern, Derrick and wife Angie, Ryan Mendenhall, Danny and wife Jennifer Allerd, all of Winston-Salem, Tim McGuire and wife Mindy, of Clemmons, Charlie Allard, of Raleigh, Phillip Hinson, of Waxhaw, Ashley Bradley and husband Chris, of Dodge City, Kan.; three great-grandchildren, Dalton Mendenhall, Will Allard, Sarah Allard, all of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Lee Strange officiating. A committal service was held at Stanly Gardens of Memory in Albemarle.
Lula Manuel Maynard
Lula Manuel Maynard, 98, of King died March 31 at Stokes Reynolds Hospital in Danbury. She was born in Stokes County on June 17, 1908, to the late Luther and Rena Mabe Manuel. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She retired from Duplan Corporation with 30 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Cecil Maynard, in 1970.
Surviving are a daughter, Earlene Flinchum and husband Jack of King; four grandchildren, Jack Gray Flinchum Jr. and wife Cindy of Clemmons, Paul Flinchum and wife Lori of Pfafftown, Joy Greene and husband Chris of Rural Hall and Tim Flinchum of King; and five great-grandchildren, Macy, Molly, Ben, Rachel and Mark.
A graveside service was held at Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. David Harmon officiating.
Frank Cole Nicholson, Jr.
Mr. Frank Cole Nicholson, Jr., 62, Clemmons, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 27, 2008.
Mr. Nicholson was born in Winston-Salem, February 13, 1946 son of Frank Cole and Ione Arrington Perry Nicholson. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church for 22 years, serving on the Board of Trustees.
Mr. Nicholson was a senior internal auditor for Krispy Kreme, a Piedmont Aviation Credit Union Committee Member, a City of Clemmons Zoning Board Member, and had formerly worked for Piedmont Airlines/U.S. Airways.
Surviving are his wife, Marianne Mackey Nicholson, four daughters: Heather Nicholson Vlachos and her husband Ilias Vlachos, Meghan Ione Nicholson, Jill Nicholson Wesley and her husband Michael Wesley, Anne Cole Nicholson, three granddaughters: Mary, Marianna and Lenia Vlachos, three sisters: Jan Nicholson Assimos and her husband Dean Assimos, Mary Nicholson Walton and her husband Dave Walton, Lauren Nicholson Scott and her husband Kevin Scott and one brother, Tom Nicholson and his wife Kristi Nicholson, step mother, Audry Nicholson and many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Clemmons Moravian Church by Rev. John Rainey and Rev. Neil Routh. Burial followed in the church graveyard with military rites by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.

Robert Wayne Denning
Robert Wayne Denning, “Bob”, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at his home on Jonestown Road in Winston-Salem. He was 64 years old. He was born Aug. 22, 1943, in Riverside, N.J., the only son of the late Charles Donald Denning and Dorthea Emma Kumpel Denning. He was a graduate of Wake Forest University and was employed by several companies during his lifetime, including Wachovia and Bepco. He also worked as a stockbroker. Having previously lived in Lewisville and Clemmons, he was a resident of Winston-Salem for the past several years. Carol Copple Denning preceded him in death. Surviving are a son, Robert Brian Denning, and his wife, Jeannie; and daughter Christina Denning Strickland and husband John; and four grandchildren. Sister Judith McCurdy of Chapel Hill and sister Nancy E. Cook of Middletown, N.J., also survive him. Bob loved to garden, cook and do woodwork. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, at Pine Grove UMC. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Service is assisting the family.
Anne Edith Magness
Anne Edith Magness, 77, of Clemmons died Thursday, April 24, 2008. She is survived by her husband of nearly 59 years, William “Bill” C. Magness; sons, Steven Jay and David Scott (Linda); daughters, Lynn Magness Basler and Julie Lorraine; eight grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Rachel and Daniel Basler, Caitlin and Michael Magness and Nicole and Anthony Mauro; two brothers, Floyd Eugene Collins and John Anderson (Carol); numerous nieces and nephews; and Jake. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eugena McNeill Sims. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she dedicated her life to serving others. Anne’ s smile lit up a room. She was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She served on the Morris County School Board of Education and was an elder of Morris Plains Presbyterian Church. She was a New Jersey American Cancer Society volunteer of the year. Locally, she had volunteered for Hospice and Palliative CareCenter of Winston-Salem; Centenary United Methodist Church Sunrise Ministry; and Wake Forest Baptist University Medical Cancer Support Services. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Clemmons United Methodist Church. Charles Allen McKenzie
Charles Allen McKenzie, 64, of Clemmons died December 1 at Beacon Place in Greensboro. He was born in Mullins, S.C. on February 15, 1938, to Carlisle Bruce and Louise Jones McKenzie. He was retired from the Pfefferkorn Company. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are a brother, Julian Keith McKenzie and wife Mary Lou; two nieces, Leigh McKenzie Baldo and husband Floyd and their son Broc and Mary Brook McKenzie; and a special aunt, Pearle Rogers.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with Dr. Paul Mullen officiating.
Dayle Thagard McGilvary
Dayle Thagard McGilvary, 85, of Winston-Salem died November 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born June 29, 1917 to the late John and Verona Odum Thagard in Pembroke. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ann, and a brother, John.
Surviving are two sons, Laurence McGilvary of Winston-Salem and Alex McGilvary and wife Angela of Clemmons; a daughter, Alice M. McGilvary of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Michael and Adam McGilvary; and a brother, Arnold Thagard and wife Dorothy of Dunn.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Gary Chapman and Rev. Francis Smith officiating, and burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Lester Marion Parks
Lester Marion Parks, 77, of Advance died November 27 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born June 22, 1925 in Forsyth County to Lindsey M. and Mittie Key Parks. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired from Western Electric Co. with 35 years pf service and was a faithful member of Macedonia Moravian Church for many years. He made coffee for the Moravian Lovefeasts for more than 30 years and also prepared the annual chicken stew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Riddle Parks; and his sister, Geraldine Crews.
Surviving are his son, Lesley M. Parks of the home; five sisters, Flossie Holder and husband Odell of Lewisville, Ruby Hicks and husband Harold and Mary Hilton and husband Lawrence, both of Lexington, Betty Billings and husband Bobby of Winston-Salem, and Frankie James and husband Roger of Davidson County; a very close sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Margaret and Jerry Davis; three sisters-in-law, Minnie Cornatzer and husband Albert, Nancy Collette and husband Leonard and Emma Long and husband Tommy; several nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and a special companion, Mickey.
Funeral services were held at Macedonia Moravian Church with Rev. Ronnie Craddock of Yadkin Valley Baptist Church officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard with military honors by VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard.
Mary Lee Dulin
Mary Lee Dulin of Winston-Salem died November 25 after a three-month illness. She was a native of Clemmons. In 1987, she retired from AT&T after a 31 and 1/2 year career. She was a faithful member of Carver Road Church of Christ.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Frank Dulin; two sons, Reginald Dulin and wife Jackie and Randy Dulin; three grandchildren, Rodney, Rayven and Mia; two brothers, Richard Williams and Willie Williams; two sisters, Ruby Moyer, Margaret Ware and Pauline Wilson; and several cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at Carver Road Church of Christ, and entombment followed at Gardens of Memory.
Grover Preston Anderson
Grover Preston Anderson, 69, of Winston-Salem, died November 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County on April 22, 1933 to Crawley and Carrie Ayers Anderson. He was retired from Indera Mills with 47 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; s son-in-law, Dwayne Thomas; two brothers, Charlie and Johnny Anderson; two sisters, Katherine Bailey and Estelle Smith; and his mother-in-law, Juanita Barber.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Ruby Barber Anderson; a brother, Grady Anderson and wife Brenda of Lewisville; three daughters, Jan Thomas of Winston-Salem, Melissa Frasch and husband Eddie of Winston-Salem and Melinda Wood and husband Kevin of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Jason Thomas and fiancee Tabby Brim, Kevin Thomas, Nathan Wood and Hannah Wood; a brother-in-law, William H. Smith of Clemmons; a sister-in-law, Dot Anderson of Winston-Salem; special friends, the late Floyd and and Margie Angell family; and his canine companion, Jake.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Charles Martin officiating, and burial followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
Wade Lee Duncan
Wade Lee Duncan, 67, of Granite Falls died November 26 at his residence. He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and a retired barber. He also was a former minister and a former real-estate broker.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Lea Cannon Duncan; two daughters, Cynthia McNeill and husband Brian of Lewisville and Jennifer Bass and husband Roger of Newton; a son, Bishop Benjamin M. Duncan and wife Tammy of High Point; two brothers, Jake Duncan and wife Sharon of Sawmills and Clyde Duncan and wife Vinnie of Hickory; two sisters, Marie Duncan and Jean Townsend, both of Sawmills; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Bishop Jim Dickerson and Rev. Braxton Burney officiating.
Erlene Long Whitley
Erlene Long Whitley, 75, of Pfafftown died November 29 at Brian Center Health and Retirement Home. She was born in Forsyth County on March 21, 1927 to Ammon Ralph and Mamie Watts Long. She was a member of Pfafftown Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Paul Long, Kelly Long and Melvin Long; and two sisters, Treva Norman and Alta Brown.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, John “J.T.” Whitley of the home; a daughter, Terry Firle of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mina Poindexter of Pfafftown and Lois Poplin and husband Carl of Ronda; and her extended family, Kirk, Jo, Mary Blake, Kirk Jr. Bjorling and Kendra and Loizos Loizou, all of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Craig Bowman officiating.
Merlin Melvin Nichols
Merlin Melvin Nichols, 93, of Mount Airy died November 29 at Twelve Oaks Retirement Home. He was born in Surry County on November 9, 1909 to the late Charlie Merlin and Lottie Bingham Nichols. He was a lifelong farmer who loved the land. Early in his life he worked as a part-time rural mail carrier and was remembered by many as their mailman. He was devoted member of Forsyth Friends Meeting.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Bertha Marshall Nichols; four daughters, Merle Tedder and husband Ronald of Lewisville, Ruth Richards and husband Swanson of Mount Airy, Nancy Nichols Dawson of Mount Airy and Penny Chilton and husband Gary of Rural Hall; a son, Warren C. Nichols and wife Janet of Mount Airy; 13 grandchildren, Anne Richards Hennis and husband Jeffrey, Charlie Merlin Nichols, Stuart Marshall and Jennifer Nichols, Richard Grant and Robin Puckett, Christy Lynn Dawson, Janet Leigh Nichols, Olivia Dawson Vaught and husband Peyton, Gari Leigh Chilton, Jodi Chilton Cottone and husband Mark, April Tedder Lancaster and husband Larry, and Anna Tedder stover and husband Chris; nine great-grandchildren, Samuel Austin Nichols, Emily Pearson Nichols, Weldon Rose Nichols, Jessica Bean Nichols, Brady Lynn Vaught, Alexander Grant Puckett, Aliza Nichole Puckett, Madison Sinclair Lancaster and Lawrence Mitchell Lancaster; and three sisters, Marie Nichols and husband Jack, Bertie Badgett and Connie Draughn, all of Mount Airy.
Funeral services were held at White Plain Friends Meeting with Rev. Wayne Johnson officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Lillie M. Willis
Lillie M. Willis, 87, of Clemmons died January 5 at Clemmons Village II. She was born May 20, 1915, in Lisbon, N.H., the daughter of the late Fredrick and Jessie (Parker) Stebbins. She was the wife of the late Laurence E. Willis who preceded her in death August 28, 2000. She lived in the North Haverhill/Woodsville area of New Hampshire until 1950 when the family moved to Vernon, Conn. She was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft until 1960 and by Lapointe Industries until her retirement in 1976. She and her husband traveled throughout the United States until 1978 and then settled in Ruskin, Fla., until moving to Clemmons in 2000. She was a longtime member of the Women of the Moose and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Slattery and husband Peter Slattery of East Granby, Conn.; three grandsons, Rory Wheelock and wife Tammy of Clemmons, Bryan Wheelock and wife Zoraida of Manchester, Conn., and Brett Wheelock and wife Pam of Coventry, Conn.; two granddaughters, Wendy Ho Sing Loy and husband Michael of Tavernier, Fla., and Sheri Sauls and husband Allen of Gibsonton, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; her sister, Edith Hammond of North Haverhill, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
Burial and a memorial service will be held in the spring at the Woodsville Cemetery in Woodsville, N.H.
Roy Dewey Tesh
Roy Dewey “R.D.” Tesh, 75, of Clemmons died January 9 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born December 27, 1927, in Surry County to Roy Dewey Sr. and Lula Elizabeth Tilley Tesh. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, member of Clemmons Moravian Church and retired from Cahill and Swain men’s clothing with over 40 years of service. Two brothers, Clinton and Wayne Tesh, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Pat Tesh of the home; a daughter, Pamela Tesh Luke and husband DeLacy of Greensboro, Ga.; a son, Steve Tesh and wife Cindy of Clemmons; three granddaughters, Sarah, Mary and Julia Tesh; a sister, Joyce Boyd of Wake Forest; a brother, Vance Tesh and wife Reva of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Ray Burke officiating, and burial followed in the church graveyard.
Viola M. Brown
Viola M. Brown, 84, of Willowbrook Health Center and formerly of Dobson, died January 11. She was born on August 9, 1918, in Surry County. She was retired from the Dietary Department at Surry Community College and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Surviving are Peggy and Harold Branch of Lewisville, Navid and Jinda Ahdieh of Charlotte and Wendell and Annie Branch of Mount Airy, Dot and Geneva Brown of Dobson and several nieces and nephews and the loving caring staff and residents of Willowbrook Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held at Moody Funeral Home in Dobson with Rev. Trent Lyons officiating, and burial followed in the Copeland Baptist Church Cemetery.
