VERA HARDEE WATKINS
RALEIGH -- Vera Hardee Watkins, 85, died Thursday, June 3, 1999. Mrs. Watkins was born in Raleigh, and was a lifelong resident. She was a homemaker, and also a foster mother.
Surviving: daughters, Beverly Pignata and husband, Rich, Jane Holcomb and husband, Tom, Chris Coleman and husband, Eddie, all of Raleigh; sister, Estelle Hardee; grandchildren, Shel and Jason Mullis, Shannon Green, Abel, Andy, and Chris Holcomb, and special friends, Lucinda Watkins and David Chatham.
She was predeceased by her husband, William E. Watkins; children, Sweetsie and Dale Watkins; brother, Howard H. Hardee.
The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in Mitchell Funeral Home chapel, with interment in Montlawn Memorial Park.
Friends may visit 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St.
Flowers are welcome, or memorials may be made to the Wake County Animal Shelter, 820 Beacon Dr., Raleigh, NC 27610.
ANNIE LUCILLE GARDNER
ENFIELD -- Annie Lucille Gardner, 75, died June 3, 1999.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.
Mrs. Gardner is survived by her husband J. Fred Gardner of the home; one daughter, Elaine G. Sanderson of Louisburg; two sons, James Stuart and Gene Gardner, both of Enfield; a sister, Joyce Bennett of Rocky Mount; two brothers, Rufus Beamon of Farmville and Curtis Beamon of Greenville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Saturday evening at 505 Sherrod Height, Enfield, NC.
Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
REV. DOUGLAS JOHNSON
CLAYTON -- Rev. Douglas Johnson 85, of 528 E. 2nd St., died Thursday, June 3.
Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Everett Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Rev. Fred Johnson and Rev. Billy Yawn officiating.
Arrangements by McLaurin Funeral Home.
He is survived by wife, Alva H. Johnson of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Joy Johnson of Raleigh, Dennis and Gladys Johnson of Bunn, Jimmy and Kim Johnson of Fuquay-Varina; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
RICHARD SMITH LEE
RALEIGH -- Richard Smith Lee, 77, of Raleigh died June 2, 1999. Mr. Lee is preceded in death by his brother, Willis M. Lee and his sister, Lottie Lane Furr.
A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Montlawn Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Athens Drive Baptist Church, 1601 Athens Drive, Raleigh. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Lee is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Jordan Lee; son, Richard Smith Lee, Jr. and his wife, Annette of Raleigh; grandchildren, Ben and Beth Lee of Raleigh; brother, Robert Earl Lee and his wife Betty of Charlottesville, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Athens Drive Baptist Church, Building Fund.
JOSEPH GRAYSON LEWTER
WENDELL -- Joseph Grayson Lewter, 71, of 305 Selma Road, died Thrusday, June 3, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Mr. Lewter was a retired tool and die maker with 35 years of service at Westinghouse. He served his country in the U.S. Navy and was past master of the Wendell Masonic Lodge #565 A.F. & A.M. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service chapel, Knightdale. Entombment, Woodlawn Memorial Park, Durham with Masonic Rites.
Surviving: wife, Ruby Capps Lewter; daughter, Beth Valinda Lewter of the home; sisters, Maxie Roberson and her husband, Bobby of Apex, Betty Williams and her husband, Tom of Knightdale; brothers, Ralph Lewter and his wife, Pauline of Durham, Billy Lewter and his wife, Shirley of Durham, Gerald Lewter and his wife, Ruth of Pittsboro.
Family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 1999 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545 and other times at the home of Thomas and Betty Williams, 128 Lynwood Drive, Knightdale, NC 27545.
RALPH DAVID MOORE
SELMA -- Ralph David Moore, 76, died Thursday night at his home. Funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday in the Micro First Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Stevens and Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Micro Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys Thomas Moore; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Lee Moore of Selma; daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Steve Edwards of Selma, Lou and Wyatt Brown of Selma; sister, Ruby M. Rhodes of Princeton; grandchildren, Douglas, Alyson, Thomas and Trudy.
The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma Saturday night from 7-9 p.m.

ERCELL FOWLER POWELL
JULY 20, 1920-JUNE 3, 1999
ZEBULON -- Ercell Fowler Powell, 78, formerly of 904 W. Gannon Ave., died Thursday night at Wellington Nursing Center. She was born in Nash County, the daughter of the late Lillie Crowder and Arthur Lewis. She was a retired employee of ITT.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 1999 at Zebulon United Methodist Church. Burial, Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Surviving: husband, John E. Powell of Wake Forest; daughters, Jean Billings of Durham, Faye Boyette of Wellford, SC, Diane Roadcap of Bracey, VA: stepdaughter, Janie Bailey of Raleigh; stepson, Jimmy Powell of Wake Forest; sister, Joann Taylor of Red Oak; brother, James Lewis of Sacramento, CA; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Lenwood Fowler and a daughter, Mary Neal O'Neal.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell.
CHARLES L. SMITH
CARY -- Charles Lee Smith, 72, of 809 W. Chatham St., died Thursday, June 3.
Graveside service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery. Rev. Eddie Franks officiating.

He is survived by: daughters, Joyce Smith of Clayton, Carol Holland of Sanford; sisters, Marie Walker of Clayton, Mattie Pollard of Clayton, Margaret Barbour of Clayton; brother, Ben Roy Smith of Knightdale; two grandchildren, Stephanie Holland, Sherry Holland.
Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
COLLETTA M. SPERLING
SILVER BAY, NY -- Colletta M. Sperling, 76, of Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, NC, died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, June 3, 1999, at her beloved summer cottage in Silver Bay, NY.
She was born on July 17, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of John A. and Elizabeth (Doyle) Forrestel.
Mrs. Sperling attended the Juliard School of Music and she was a graduate of Trinity College. She eventually became a member of the Board of Directors of Trinity College.
She married Dr. Walter Sperling in 1947. In 1985 the couple retired from Montclair, NJ to the Chapel Hill, NC area.
She was a woman who throughout her life generously loved her music and her art and she especially loved her summers at Silver Bay. She had been a resident of Silver Bay for the last 33 summers.
She was a communicant of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Chapel Hill, NC.
She is predeceased by her husband and she will be buried next to him in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Mrs. Sperling is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law; Walter J. and Alice Sperling of Corvallis, OR, Dr. John F. and Margaret Sperling of Utica, NY, Douglas P. Sperling of Silver Bay and David M. and Andi Sperling of Glorritta, NM; two daughters and sons-in-law, Colletta J. and William Catherwood of Chevy Chase, MD and Louise M. and Victor Gallerano of Arlington, VA; and 18 grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Sunday, June 6, 1999 at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Hague, the Rev. George Fleming officiating. There will also be a memorial Mass at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church in Chapel Hill at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Connery & Gunning Funeral Home in Ticonderoga.
WILLIAM CLARENDON STEADMAN
PINETOPS -- William Clarendon Steadman, 73, died Friday. He was a life long resident of Edgecombe County, retired farmer and attended Edwards military Academy, also attended U.S. Academy of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a deacon and elder of Pinetops Presbyterian Church were he served as Chairman of the Stewardship Committee for many years. Funeral service 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Pinetops Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Owens officiating. Burial in the Pinetops Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Frances Fowlkes Steadman; sons, William C. Steadman Jr. of Pinetops, Robert Bryce Steadman of Raleigh; granddaughters, Talley Steadman and Katherine Steadman, both of Raleigh; sister, Dorothy S. Powell of Wilson; brother, Bruce A. Steadman of Little River, S.C.
The family will receive friends at Carlisle Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m.
CAROLYN WATKINS
ANGIER -- Carolyn Watkins, 67, died Friday.
She was a retired magistrate after 25 ears of service in Harnett County.
Graveside service 5 p.m. Sunday, Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Route 2, Angier.
survivors: husband, Danny Watkins Sr.; children, Danny P. Watkins Jr. and wife, Debbie and children, Daniel III and Timothy of Angier; daughter, Debbie W. Adcock and husband, Randy and children, Anna, Allison and Abby, all of Angier; son, David W. Watkins and wife, Stephanie and children, Kayla, Nicole and David, all of Angier; brother, Warren H. Johnson and wife, Faye and son, Michael of Raleigh.
The family will receive friends from 7:30-9 Saturday night at Overby Johnson Funeral Home; other times at the home of Danny P. Watkins Jr., 4181 Benson Road, Angier.
DORIS WILKINSON BURTON
RALEIGH -- Doris Wilkinson Burton, of Mayview Nursing Home in Raleigh, NC, and formerly of Willow Oaks Apartments in Richmond, VA, died Thursday morning, June 10. She was 87.
She is survived by her daughters, Betsy B. Hannah and Catrrine B. Ponall and granddaughter, Beth P. Grupe, all of Raleigh.
Mrs. Burton had been in Raleigh for four years, but she still loved and missed her many Richmond friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas Edward Burton, Jr.
Though she was confined to a wheelchair due to osteoporosis, the wheels became her legs, allowing her to maintain her fiercely guarded independence and mobility. She retained her sharp mind and quick wit to the end.
Gratefully, she died peacefully. While resting, she simply stopped breathing. A service was held at her bedside, surrounded by her family.
