Jeffrey Scott Allen
Jeffrey Scott Allen, 43, of Lewisville died September 21 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born February 3, 1961, in Forsyth County to Jack M. and Mary Sawyer Allen. He was a member of Jefferson Church of Christ and an active member of their softball team along with the Winston-Salem league.
Surviving are his wife, Heidi Allen; a daughter, Sasha Allen; his mother and father; a stepson, Travis Tuttle; three sisters, Lynn Johnson, Donna Bates and Emily Grubbs; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Maria and Dewey Parlier; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Williams and Patty Fulp; two brothers-in-law, James and Paul Parlier; and three special friends, Doug Stack, Mitch Blackburn and Barry Mikels.
A memorial service was held at Jefferson Church of Christ.
Raymond Emerson Binkley
Raymond Emerson Binkley, 89, of Clemmons died September 27 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born February 25, 1915, to Thomas H. and Lizzie N. Binkley. He lived all his life in the Walkertown, Winston-Salem and Clemmons areas, attending local schools and participating actively in several sports. He worked for the Bahnson Co. for 42 years, beginning in the machine shop and retiring as the plant superintendent. He was very active in the planning and design of the Lowery Street plant and always took pride in the plant, its products and his employees. He was a founding member of Parkway United Church of Christ and spent many months in the planning and design of their new building. Years later, he became a member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church, playing an active role as long as his health permitted, including service on the board of trustees. His involvement with seven of his buddies in the building of the organ for Fries Church was a source of great fun and fellowship as well as immense pride for him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Dianne Binkley King; his granddaughter, Erin Blair King; his son-in-law, Thomas Baxter Fletcher; his brothers, Alvin and Arnold Binkley; and a sister, Eloise Binkley Pegram.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Frances Johnson Binkley of the home; his daughters, Jean Binkley Thrower and husband Bill, and Betty Binkley Fletcher Ashby and husband Lonnie, all of Clemmons; a son-in-law, Jim King and wife Mary Jane of Oak Ridge; his grandchildren, Bryan King of High Point, Mark Fletcher, Laura Ashby and Ben Ashby of Clemmons, Staff Sgt. Chad Ashby and wife Amber, of Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas, Stacey Hall and husband Stuart of Wake Forest, Kelly Kilian and husband Michael of Norlina, Kevin Thrower of Raleigh and Stacy Barham of Oak Ridge; his great-grandchildren, Dylan Wells, Bryce and Riley Hall of Wake Forest and Barret Hunter Ashby of Little Rock, Ark.; his brother, Frank Binkley and wife Mary Ruth of Winston-Salem; his sisters Catherine Binkley Hester of Winston-Salem and Virginia Warner and husband Horace of Walkertown; sisters-in-law Colleen Binkley of Winston-Salem and Maxine Binkley of Walkertown; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Fries Memorial Moravian Church with Rev. Dr. Worth Green officiating and Rev. Margaret Leinbach assisting.
Peggy Beauchamp Teague
Peggy Beauchamp Teague, 63, of Winston-Salem died September 27 at her home. She was born March 19, 1941, in Forsyth County to Clyde Neal and Edna Pfaff Beauchamp. She was retired from the Forsyth County school system as the registrar at Mount Tabor High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobert Franklin Teague, in July 1999.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin Teague and wife Barbara of Winston-Salem and Brian Teague and wife Sandra of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Ryan, Megan, Chris and Travis; four sisters, Hellen, Linda, Sue and Lois; two brothers, Wayne and Neal; and a host of nieces and nephews and special friends.
A graveside service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park with Rev. David Lookadoo and Rev. Bob Mathews officiating.
Mattie Templeton Anthony
Mattie “Viola” Templeton Anthony, 67, of Clemmons died November 15 at Forsyth Medical Center after an illness of seven years. She was born April 24, 1937, in Swain County to Ottis Monroe and Pearl Leona Queen Barker. She was preceded in death by her father, Ottis Barker; her stepfather, June Barker; her first husband, Jessie A. Templeton; her second husband, Goldman Anthony; her son, Richard W. Templeton; a sister, Eula Fry; and three brothers, Virgil and wife Katherine Barker, Amis and wife Jewell Barker and Buel Barker Sr.
Surviving are a son, David R. Templeton and wife Kathy Swing Templeton of Clemmons; a granddaughter, Holly N. Templeton of Clemmons; her mother, Pearl Barker of Lexington; a sister, Penny Evans and husband Belvin of Clemmons; a brother, Nevil Barker and wife Jane of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Mary Louise Barker of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at the Parklawn Memorial Park Chapel of Faith with Dr. Robert Floyd officiating.
Herman Joseph Haynes
Herman Joseph Haynes, 77, of Germanton died November 15 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Surry County on February 17, 1927, to the late William Columbus and Lillie Johnson Haynes. He worked for 15 years at Hunter Publishing Co. and was retired from Clay Printing. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army, and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys McBride Johnson; and six brothers, Carl, Robert, Frank, Jim, Clarence and Mack Haynes.
Surviving are his wife, Ernestine “Tina” Fallin Haynes of the home; a daughter, Pamela Linnens and husband Brent of Germanton; a son, Mike Haynes and wife Tempie of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Adam Haynes, Heather Hall, Joseph Linnens and Sydney Linnens; a sister-in-law, Velma Haynes of Mount Airy; and two nieces, Lillie Edwards and Betty Jean Wood, both of Mount Airy.
A graveside service was held at Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy with Rev. Mike Martin officiating. Full military honors were given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard, Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436.
Carroll Lindbergh Mabe
Carroll Lindbergh “Lindy” Mabe, 77, of Madison died November 17 at his home. A lifelong resident of Stokes County, he was born May 27, 1927, to James Gideon Mabe and Gussie Johnson Mabe. He was a devoted member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he was involved with the church tape ministry. He was a Macfield retiree and a U.S. Army veteran who served in Panama. He had a love for bluegrass, southern gospel music, gadgets, singing/dancing mechanical toys, flashlights and making people laugh. He was also a wrestling fan, an avid Braves fan and a devoted customer of the Airport Drive-In (special thanks to Karen). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Scott Kevin Mabe; his grandson, Curt Mabe; and a special dog, Boo-Boo.
Surviving are his wife of almost 53 years, Shirley Joyce Mabe; five children, Richard Mabe and wife Bobbie of Lewisville, Bruce Mabe of Madison, Randy Mabe of Rural Hall, Lisa Brewer and husband James of Madison and Lori Richardson of King; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dixon Mabe and wife Beulah of Walnut Cove, Edison Mabe and wife Elaine of Germanton and Ray Rhodes and wife Bonnie of Madison; and a sister, Betty Lou Mabe and husband Grady of Madison.
Funeral services were held at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Atkins officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Paul Jackson Dezern
Paul Jackson Dezern, 65, of Lewisville died November 16 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born April 3, 1939, to Charlie and Jessie Dezern of East Bend. He was a retired successful business owner. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Matthew Dezern.
Surviving are his wife, Ingrid Ries Dezern of the home; children Donn Dezern of Winston-Salem, LouAnn Gibbons and husband Wayne of East Bend, Jeff Dezern and wife Edna of High Rock Lake, Marlene Hunter of Kure Beach, Sharon Murphy and husband Keith of Yadkinville, Janice Willard and husband Todd of Winston-Salem and Billy Miller of Reidsville; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Dezern of Winston-Salem and Larry Dezern of Tennessee; four sisters, Lorene Lineberry of Kernersville, Peggy Jumper of Walkertown, Marlene Taylor of East Bend and Nell Barnette of New River; and a very special friend, D.C. Mock.
A memorial service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Chapel in Clemmons.
James Dale Cannon
James Dale Cannon, 74, of Houston, TX, formerly of Winston-Salem, died November 15. He was born February 15, 1930, in Fort Worth to Thomas Oran and Tessa Kimbrough Cannon. He operated his own business in Houston, Lift-It, Inc., until his retirement. He was a member of First Christian Church of Winston-Salem and was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Jean Cannon, in April 2003.
Surviving are two sons, Craig Cannon and wife Donna of Anchorage, AK, and Zack Cannon and wife Barbara of Houston; a daughter, Carol Novosad and husband Dirk of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Kendall Novosad and Christin, Alex and Brad Cannon; and a sister, Mary Shaw of Excelsior, MN.
A memorial service was held at First Christian Church with Dr. Mike Simpson officiating.
John Ed Cummings
John Ed Cummings, 77, of Kernersville died November 11 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County to John Martin and Dorothy Elizabeth Cummings on October 26, 1927. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Kernersville Moose Lodge and also a lifelong member of the Kernersville Moravian Church, where he helped Bern Stafford and Al Singleton make coffee for the love feasts. For many years he worked with the Little League ball teams, the Fourth of July celebrations and the Spring Follies. heretired from Sara Lee Corp. He was an avid ham-radio operator and loved his music and shag dancing. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy Elizabeth Foster.
Surviving are a sister, Pat West and husband Charles of Kernersville; a cousin, Mrs. Theodore Kerner of Kernersville; two nephews, John Martin Wootten and wife Paula of Walnut Cove and Robert Foster and wife Helen of Coco Beach, FL; three nieces, Sydney Wootten Cox and husband Robert of Colliersville, TN, Robyn Wootten Furr of Clemmons and Linda Foster Waters and husband Larry of Clemmons; six great-nephews, Hunter Foster of New York City, Todd Barrow of Clemmons, Chris Barrow of Winston-Salem, J. Simon Cox of Fort Worth, Texas, Kaleb Mathews of Yadkinville and Casey Sisk of Kernersville; five great-nieces, Elizabeth Cox and husband Ron Welborn of Fort Worth, TX, Taylor Marie Wootten of Walnut Cove, Abigail Martin Gay of Clemmons, Jamie Barrow of Winston-Salem and Sutton Lenore Foster of New York City; and two great-great-nieces, Ella Elizabeth Welborn of Fort Worth, TX and Gabrial Barrow of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at the Kernersville Moravian Graveyard with Chaplain Robert Love officiating.
Barbara King Forrest
Barbara King Forrest, 75, of Mount Airy died November 17 at SemperCare Hospital of Winston-Salem. She was born January 12, 1929, in Surry County to Hugh Wilbur King and Mary Lena Beasley King. She was a loving homemaker and a lifelong member of Grace Moravian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Travis.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Emmett Forrest of the home; two daughters, Dixie Beroth and husband Wes of Bermuda Run and Terri Champney and husband Tom of Advance; a son, Steve Forrest of Clemmons; grandchildren Tamsen Forrest Beroth and Tanna Hunter Beroth, both of Bermuda Run; three stepgrandchildren, Tiffany, Cassidy and Alex Champney, all of Advance; three sisters, Erline Miller and husband Jim and Polly Cox, all of Mount Airy, and Frances Caudle and husband Bill of Christiansburg, VA.
Funeral services were held at Grace Moravian Church with Rev. Tim Byerly and Rev. Neil Routh officiating. Burial followed in God’s Acre.
Jimmy Gray Crews Sr.
Jimmy Gray Crews Sr., 68, of Pfafftown died November 12. He was born in Forsyth County on July 18, 1936, the son of James Payton and Thelma Bean Crews. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He owned and operated Crews Home Improvement most of his life. He was preceded in death by his father and a daughter, Lisa.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia L. Crews of the home; his mother, Thelma Bean Thornton of Lewisville; children Shane Gray Crews and wife Carol of Walkertown, Jimmy Gray Crews Jr. of Mocksville, Alan L. Crews of King, Shirley Crews of Winston-Salem, Jamie Crews of California, Andrew Fulp and wife Nancy of Kernersville, Tiffany Fulp of Kernersville and Angie Crews of Wisconsin; a daughter-in-law, Wendy Crews of Mocksville; numerous grandchildren; a brother, T.L. Crews and wife Sandra of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Kevin Thompson officiating. Burial with military honors followed at Crestview Memorial Park.
Mildred Thompson Doub Arton
Mildred Thompson Doub Arton, 75, of Lewisville died March 1 at her home. She was born July 31, 1930, in Forsyth County to Willie Edward and Mary Violet Lee Thompson. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and was retired from Bahnson Co. with over 50 years of loyal service. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters; and three brothers.
Surviving are a daughter, Terri Doub Sacco and husband Charlie of the home; two grandchildren, Christopher Lee Doub and wife Lauryn and Toni Linn Sacco; a great-grandson, Christian Joseph Doub; a brother, Bobby Thompson of Kernersville; and a sister, Virginia Baity of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Cecil Cave officiating. Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery.
Lucy Shore Thompson
Lucy Shore Thompson, 93, of Winston-Salem died March 1 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on March 23, 1912, in Yadkin County to A.D. and Ester Fleming Shore. Shes lived most of her life in Forsyth County. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and was retired from Hanes Hosiery. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Thompson.
Surviving are a daughter, Kay Bodenheimer, and husband Jim of Lewisville; a grandson, Jeff Bodenheimer and wife Portia; two great-grandchildren, Haley and Kellan Bodenheimer; a brother, Thomas K. Shore; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel Rev. David Harmon officiating. Burial followed at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Ruby Emma King Barker
Ruby Emma King Barker, 93, of Lansing died February 27 at Segraves Care Center. She was born September 20, 1912, the youngest child of James T. and Evelyn J. King. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, F.L. Barker Sr.; two sons, F.L. Barker Jr. and James D. Barker; four brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are a daughter, Kathy Parks and husband Buddy of Lewisville; two daughters-in-law, Clara S. Barker of Boone and Earlene L. Barker of West Jefferson; four grandchildren, Kim Quinn and husband Charles and Cindy Barr and husband Greg of Boone, Alice Mitchell and husband Matt of Mooresville and Buddy Barker and wife Nicole of Blowing Rock; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary K. Felty of Marion, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Phoenix Baptist Church with Rev. Kenneth Morris and Rev. Larry Powers officiating. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens.
Annie H. Henry
Annie H. Henry, 98, of Mount Airy died February 28 at Surry Community Nursing Center in Mount Airy. She was born in Surry County on April 11, 1907, to C.L. and Betty Hiatt. She spent a productive nursing career in Washington, D.C., and the Triad area of North Carolina. While living and working in the Winston-Salem area, she was a member of Home Moravian Church before returning to Mount Airy. Until her death, she was the last living charter member of Grace Moravian Church in Mount Airy. On April 10, 1949, she married W.R. Henry, who is deceased. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Blannie Baum of Cana, Va.; three brothers, Harry Hiatt, J. Robert Hiatt and Roy Hiatt; and a nephew, Jake Hiatt, all of Mount Airy.
Surviving are three nephews, Harry Baum and wife June of Afton, Va.; James Baum Sr. of Mount Airy; and Corky Hiatt and wife Glenda of Mount Airy; four nieces, Phyllis Fleming and husband Howard of Cana, Va.; Sylvia Mayer of Mount Airy; Pat Tesh of Clemmons; and Frances Jackson and husband Dwight of Advance; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special great-niece and caregiver, Kay Turner and husband Gary of Winston-Salem.
A memorial service was held at Grace Moravian Church in Mount Airy with Rev. Timothy Byerly officiating.
Ola Hannah Brown
Ola Hannah Brown, 94, of Winston-Salem died March 1 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Belton, S.C., on October 19, 1911, to the late Andy and Martha Elizabeth Smith Hannah. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Denver Brown; four brothers; and three sisters.
Surviving are three sons, Rev. Jimmy D. Brown and wife Nancy of Charlotte, John A. Brown and wife Iris of Winston-Salem and Joe H. Brown and wife Karen of Lewisville; 12 grandchildren, Suzanne Minton, Catherine Brown, Nancy Lee Roberts, David Roberts, Jean Martinson, David Brown, Lisa Pruitt, Angela Brown, Joe Brown, Michael Brown, Joey Hilton and Jami White; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home. Burial followed in New Silverbrook Cemetery in Anderson, S.C.
Dorothy N. Hendricks
Dorothy N. Hendricks of Clemmons died March 3 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Jersey City, N.J., to the late John and Helen Toone North. She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick John Hendricks; a daughter, Patricia Hendricks Langston; and four brothers.
Surviving are a daughter, Ellen Hendricks Bumgarner and husband Charlie of Lewisville; three sons, Steven Joseph Hendricks and wife Ellyn of Carlsbad, Calif., John Patrick Hendricks and wife Nida of Cooper City, Fla., and David Paul Hendricks and wife Sandra of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Joan Fallon of Middletown, N.J., Marie DeSordi and husband John of Cresco, Pa., and Janet Haskins of Jersey City.
A memorial service was held at Ardmore Baptist Churchwith Rev. Christa Warise officiating.
George H. Simons
George H. Simons, 74, of Lewisville died March 3 after an extended illness with cancer. He was born on September 14, 1931, in Manchester, N.H., to Gustav H. Simons and Helen McKenna Simons. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He worked in various engineering capacities in the fields of nuclear power and cryogenics prior to joining Lord Corp. of Cary. He retired from Lord Corp. in 1996 with 30 years of engineering and management positions. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Marjorie Jones and Lorraine Smith.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ruth Simons; and three daughters, Leanne Floyd and husband Charles of Pfafftown; Maura Pelinsky and husband Carl of Fairview, Pa.; and Kara Fuller and husband Daniel of Clarkston, Mich.; four grandchildren, Rebecca Lovewell, Justin Pelinsky and Jorja and Danica Fuller; two sisters, Arline Rom, of New Hyde Park, N.Y., and Kathleen Bayko of Manchester, N.H.; and two brothers, Charles Simons of West Suffield, Conn., and Harry Simons of Bedford, N.H.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A private burial was held at Forsyth Memorial Park.
Mary Jean Hopper Wommack
Mary Jean Hopper Wommack, 82, died March 3 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born November 26, 1923, in Akron, Ohio, the first living child of David Claude Hopper and Ida Tyson Hopper. She grew up in Edgewood, Pa., where she was an active member of the Wilkinsburg Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). After her marriage on May 5, 1945, to Kenneth L. Wommack, the family moved to Winston-Salem in 1947, where she was a mother of four children and an active member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), serving as chair of the Elders, chair of the Organ Selection Committee and longtime member of the choir. She worked for Forsyth County and later for the State of North Carolina as a social worker for the blind. She served both First Christian Church and Calvary Moravian Church as director of the Youth Choir for several years. She assisted in the Meals On Wheels program for a number of years. In 1982 she started Countryside Crafters, an archival picture-framing shop, and served friends in the Winston-Salem and Lewisville communities until 2002, when poor health intervened. She was an enthusiastic organic gardener and, additionally, she especially enjoyed sewing, the spinning and weaving of decorative pieces for the home and raising golden retrievers and African violets. She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Sidney L. and Ada Culler Wommack; and her only sister, Martha Doris Hopper Mills.
Surviving are her husband of Lewisville; a daughter, Jane Louise Wommack Brown and husband John of Asheboro; three sons, David Roy Wommack and wife Virginia Yap of Cebu City, the Philippines, Richard Sidney Wommack and wife Gloria Guldberg) of Mocksville and Paul Tyson Wommack and wife Doris Anne Steppe of Aliquippa, Pa.; three grandchildren, Klif and Joel Wommack of Winston-Salem and Emerald Wommack Jervoso of Boston, Mass.; her brother-in-law, Courter D. Mills of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and William W. Wommack (brother-in-law) and wife Jean; and many dear friends.
A memorial service was held at First Christian Church.
Julia Etta Hedrick Hege
Julia Etta Hedrick Hege, 82, widow of William Edward Hege, Jr., formerly of Lexington, died February 26 at Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville. She was born December 26, 1923 in Johnston County, to Numer Sylvester and Florence Surratt Hedrick. She was a member of Calvary Moravian Church. She was a loving homemaker and was devoted to her family. She will be remembered for her beautiful gardens and her caring of others in need.
Surviving are two children, daughter Judith Irene Bailey and husband Brendon of Kalamazoo, Michigan and son William Edward Hege III and wife Cathe of Advance; two grandchildren, William Edward Hege IV and wife Leslie and Erin Lynn Hege; and two sisters, Aline Ballard of Windsor and Frances Hart of Burlington.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem. Burial followed in God’s Acre.
