Mr. Lonnie "Tubby" Roy Adkins
Mr. Lonnie "Tubby" Roy Adkins, age 90, of Morganton, died Friday, July 1, 2005 after a long illness at Grace Hospital. He was born the son of the Late Thomas M. Adkins and Minnie Chaney Adkins on September 11, 1914 in Surry County. He married Jimison Sutphin in 1934 in Hillsville, VA. In 1953, Tubby was baptized and became a member of Asheville Street Baptist Church. Tubby was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three brothers, Eli, Howard and Grady Adkins; and three sisters, Elza Frye, Madge Shelton and Alice Shelton.
He is survived by his wife, Jimison Adkins of the home; two sons, Erik L. Adkins and his wife, LaVerne of Durham, Danny W. Adkins and his wife, Hilda of the home; two daughters, Ruth A. Lydicks and her husband, Frayne of Goodview, VA, and Sylvia A. Corbett and her husband, Melvin of Charlotte. Also surviving are six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 5th at Burke Memorial Park with Reverends Earl Cross and Harry Christie presiding. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 P.M. Tuesday afternoon at Kirksey Funeral Home before traveling by procession to the graveside service.
The family will receive friends at their Butler Street home at other times.
Carolyn June Peek
Carolyn June Peek, 60, of Old Fort passed into eternity Aug. 3, 2004 at Universal Health Care of Fletcher.
She was the special and much loved daughter of the late Clyde and Nola B. Peek. She loved everyone and touched the hearts of all who came into contact with her.
Survivors include her brothers, Ben Peek of Old Fort and Clyde Peek Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Marion; a sister, Barbara P. Souther and her husband, Don, of Belton, S.C.
Services are at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Piney Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Milton Hollifield, Jack Thomas and Dean Glacken officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The body is at Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort and will be placed in the church at 4:30 p.m. where the family will receive friends.

Lois Rhinehart Hall
Lois Rhinehart Hall, age 84, of Marion, NC, passed away, Friday, July 1, 2005 in Mission Hospital, Asheville.
Born January 29, 1921, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Burleson and the late Jeter Rhinehart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Hall and her son, Russell “Butch” Hall, Jr . Lois was an active member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church and the founder of the church’s “Young At Heart” senior group. She was a previous WMU Director of Buckeye Baptist Church. She enjoyed making dolls and other handicrafts.
Surviving Mrs. Hall is one daughter, Gail Moyers and husband, James of Marion, NC; two sons, Richard “Rick” Hall and wife, Ginger of Swannanoa, NC, Michael Hall and wife Cindy of Marion, NC, one brother, W.R. Burleson, Jr. of Newport News, Va.; one sister, Zelma Ray of Milledgeville, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Becky Winton of Altamonte Springs, Fl.; nine grandchildren, Eric, Angie, Doug, Sharon, Karen, Ryan, Derrick, Ashley, Benjamin; eight great grandchildren, Holly, Paige, Matthew, Christy, Faith, Candace, Amy & Traci; one great great grandson, Phoenix and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 2:00 o’clock Sunday, July 3, 2005 in Cross Memorial Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Prevette officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 at the church. Interment will follow in Sky View Memorial Park, Asheville.

Ms. Kathleen Deaton
Ms. Kathleen Deaton, 79, of Autumn Care of Drexel died Monday, October 21, 2002 at Autumn Care of Drexel.
Born August 13, 1923 in Burke County she was the daughter of the late Ed and Mamie Deaton. Sister’s Louise D. Carson and Jessie Deaton both of Morganton survive Ms. Deaton.
A private service will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at Bethel United Methodist Church.
Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton assisted the Deaton family with funeral arrangements.
Benjamin Leroy Epley
Benjamin Leroy Epley, age 86, of Greenlee Rd., Marion, died Monday, July 14, 2003 in Brian Center, Spruce Pine, N.C.
Born in Burke County to the late Hubert and Myrtie E. Epley, he was a retired employee of Henredon Furniture and a member of West Court Baptist Church. He was the husband of the late Katie R. Epley.
Surviving are three sons, Clifton Epley and Charles Epley both of Marion and Kenneth Epley of Nebo, N.C.; four daughters, Elaine Harris of Marion, Dianne Hollar of Lenoir, N.C., Pat Ward of Marion, Margaret Robinson of Old Fort, N.C. ; three sisters, Myrtle Downs of Morganton, N.C., Sadie Eller of Drexel, N.C., Raye Parrish of Columbia, S.C.; 26 grandchildren and 49 great grandchildren.
Services will be held 11:00 o’clock Wednesday, July 16, 2003 at West Court Baptist Church. Rev. Reid Cooper will officiate with burial following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 8:00 at Kirksey Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Mrs. Linda Kay Buchanan
Mrs. Linda Kay Buchanan, 51, of Marion, died, Tuesday, December 9, 2003.
Born March 29, 1952, in McDowell County, she was a daughter of Arville Honeycutt, of Marion, and the late Carmen Sherlin Honeycutt. Mrs. Buchanan was a member of the Cross Mill Pentecostal Holiness Church, Marion.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 33 years, Donald Ray Buchanan, of the home; her father, Arville Honeycutt, of Marion; a son, Tony Buchanan, of Marion; a daughter, Angie Buchanan, of Marion; two brothers, Buddy Honeycutt, of SC and Tommy Honeycutt, of Forest City, NC; four sisters, Alice Penland, of Marion, Mary Hudgins, of Burnsville, NC, Barbara Davis, of Rutherfordton, NC and Elizabeth Wilson, of Old Fort, NC; Also surviving are two grandchildren, Kelsey Buchanan and Madison Elliott, both of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Buchanan will be held 2:00PM, Saturday, December 13, 2003, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverend Taylor Lathan officiating. Interment will follow at the Turkey Cove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6:00PM-8:00PM, Friday, December 12, 2003, at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Carl Harold Proctor
Mr. Carl Harold Proctor, 81, of Marion, died, Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at the VA Medical Center, Asheville.
Born January 3, 1923, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late Jasper Proctor and Bessie White Proctor. Mr. Proctor was a Veteran of WWII and a POW, having served in the US Army. Mr. Proctor is survived by one sister, Helen Bessie Deal, of Nebo; also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Proctor will be held 11:00AM, Saturday, March 27, 2004, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with the Reverend Calvin Jett officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park with military Honors provided by the US Army.
The family will receive friends 6:00PM-8:00PM, Friday, March 26, 2004, at the Funeral Home.
Harold Martin Cordell
Harold Martin Cordell, 95, of Marion, died, Monday, February 14, 2005 at Autumn Care. Born June 3, 1909, in Buncombe County, he was the son of the late John Asbury Cordell and Melissa Alice Gregg Cordell. Harold retired from the NC State Highway Dept. in 1971 after 31 years of service as a mechanic. He was also skilled as a farmer, plumber, electrician and carpenter. He was a longtime member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church where he served almost 60 years as an usher. He loved his family and friends and his last pet, the cat Snow.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 74 years, Zelma Hunnicutt Cordell; one son, Harold Kenneth Cordell and wife, Barbara; one daughter, Glenda Cordell Jackson and husband, Dennis; six grandchildren, Tim Creasman, Karen Stevens, Kathy Hughes, Mike Jackson, Mark Cordell and Brad Cordell; and three great grandchildren, Brittany Creasman, Brian Hughes and Melissa Hughes.
Funeral Services for Mr. Cordell will be held at 2:00pm, Friday, February 18, 2005, at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion, with the Reverend Mitchell Rhinehardt of Andrews, NC officiating. Interment will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Services at the funeral home.
Special thanks to the staff of Autumn Care and Dr. Moomaw for their loving care of Harold. He loved them too.

Mr. Harold Lee Little
Mr. Harold Lee Little, 87, of Marion, died, Wednesday, October 23, 2002, at the VA Medical Center, Asheville. Born October 3, 1915, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Marshall Vance Little and Essie Mae Starnes Little. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Julia Mae Huffman Little and one grandson, Robert lee Little, Jr. Mr. Little was a veteran of WWII, in the Philippine Theater, having served in the US Navy.
He was the loving father of two sons, Robert Lee Little, of Marion and Gerald Little, of Killeen, TX; he is also survived by one sister, Blanche Tensely of Morganton, NC; three brother-in-laws and three sister-in-laws; several nieces and nephews; eighteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00PM, Saturday, October 26, 2002, in the McCall Memorial Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home, Marion, with Will T. Winchester officiating. Interment will follow at the McDowell Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation for the Little family will be 6:00PM-8: 00PM, Friday, October 25, 2002, at the Funeral Home
Mrs. Ellen “Granny” Hudson Smith
Mrs. Ellen “Granny” Hudson Smith, 87, of Morganton, died, Tuesday, July 15, 2003, at Grace Heights, Morganton. Born November 19, 1915, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Hudson and Maggie Chapman Hudson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was also preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Dula Smith. She was a faithful member of the Mt. View #1 Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was “the world’s greatest Mother”.
She is survived by six sons, James Smith, Lee Smith and wife, Mary, Ernest J. Smith and wife, Peggy, Earl Smith and wife, Elizabeth, Calvin Leonard Smith and wife, Ruby and John Smith and wife, Betty, all of Morganton; Three daughters, Margie Woodard and husband, David, Ruby Branch and husband, Jerry and Ruth Conley and husband, Cletus, all of Morganton; Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Smith will be held 11:00AM, Friday, July 18, 2003, at the Mt. View #1 Baptist Church with the Reverends Albert Norville and Billy Pitts officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. View #1 Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7:00PM-9:00PM, Thursday, July 17, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home, Morganton.
Mary Maxine White Cable
Mary Maxine White Cable, loving widow of the late Clell Cable, of 706 Powdersville Main, Easley, SC, died Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at her home after a heroic battle with cancer.
Born May 31, 1935 in Old Fort, NC, she was the daughter of the late Mack Lee and Pauline Lindley White. She was the sister of the late William Jack White.
She is survived by a daughter, Deborah Cable Hensley of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Clell II and Martha Cable of Morganton, NC; Charles L. and Jackie Cable, of Piedmont, SC; Robert M. and Cindy Cable of Greenfield, IN; daughter-in-law, Ana Patricia Cable of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, S. Lee Wellman and wife Dena, Ashley, Tiffany, and Alex Cable; step grandchildren, Jason Sherman, Courtney & Christopher Norris, Sammy White & wife Donna & Talina Bray; great granddaughter, Mollie Wellman (Nanny’s Button), step great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Sherman, Savannah and Kobe White, Tyler and Courtney Bray. She was preceded in death by a son, William L. (Red) Cable. She dearly loved her family. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
The family will receive friends on Friday December 5, 2003 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort from 5-7 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort. Reverend Eric Grindstaff will officiate.
The family will be at the homeplace of Georgie and Lorne Brown and Ruby White Pearlman, 827 Catawba River Road, Old Fort, NC 28762.
