Mason Charles Payne
Mason Charles Payne of Clemmons died Friday, April 25, 2008, after a long illness. He was born July 3, 1922, in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of Monte Cassino, Italy. After the war, Mason began his career with the federal government at the Department of State, where he met his future wife, Jennie Darks. His assignments took his family to Greece, Taiwan, and Miami. Mason also served in Panama, Morocco and Vietnam. He retired in 1978 and settled in Winston-Salem, where he and Jennie became members of Konnoak Baptist Church. After moving to Clemmons, they joined Cavalry Baptist Church. Mason was known for his keen sense of humor. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader. He loved the ocean and his yearly vacations to the Outer Banks. He is survived by his wife, Jennie; sister, Gertrude Hampson of Norwich, England; sister-in-law, Connie Skidmore; his four daughters and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jack Oehme, Jessica Allen, Jeremy Nakkas and Jeffrey Bing; seven grandchildren; seven nieces; and five nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Cavalry Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. D. Ray Hamilton and the Rev. Gary Byrum officiating.

Neva Rose Hutchins Peddycord
Mrs. Neva Rose Hutchins Peddycord, 94, of Clemmons Village II died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Peddycord was born May 31, 1913, in Yadkin County, a daughter of the late Herbert Hutchins and the late Annie Lou Caudle Hutchins. Mrs. Peddycord was retired from Zsabo Foods and was a member of Heritage Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Peddycord; son Kenneth Peddycord; grandson Charles Peddycord; four sisters; and three brothers. She is survived by her children, Joyce P. Shields and husband John Jr. of Mocksville; Kathleen P. Wilson of Raleigh; Calvin Peddycord and wife Pat of Winston-Salem; and Carolyn P. Myers of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three special friends, Jack Carter of Winston-Salem; Madeline Blizard of Clemmons Village II; and Eugenia Howard of Clemmons; and a special niece, Georgie Shermer. The funeral service was conducted Friday, May 2, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Jennings O’ Neil and the Rev. Ray Burke officiating. Interment followed in Clemmons Moravian Graveyard. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Heritage Hill Baptist Church, 1785 Pope Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. The family would like to thank the staffs of Hospice and Palliative CareCenter and Clemmons Village II for the love and care shown to Mrs. Peddycord.

Carl Dillard Wray
Mr. Carl Dillard Wray, 77, a resident of 201 Fryes Creek Lane, Clemmons, formerly of Thomasville, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 10, 1931, in Davidson County, a son of the late Henry D. Wray and Ora Nicholson Wray. Mr. Wray was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was owner and operator of Wray’ s Home of Thomasville. He was a member of Fair Grove United Methodist Church and also attended Mount Tabor United Church of Christ. Mr. Wray was married to the former Bobbie Everhart, who died Dec. 30, 1999. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Nawassa Spaul. He later married Lucille Hanes, who survives of the home. Also surviving are his children, Joy Wray Tucker and her husband, Roy, of Columbia, S.C.; Toni Wray Jones and her husband, Michael, of Greensboro; Tim Wray and his wife, Shelia, of Thomasville; Penny Wray Trotter and her husband, Rick, of Thomasville; and Pam Wray Sink and her husband, Steve, of Thomasville; stepdaughters Stephanie Allred and her husband, Rick, of Lexington and Valerie Osborne and her husband, Clint, of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren, Nicole Childress and husband Daryl, Ben Goins and wife Emily, Alex Ball, Tiffany Jones, Shelly Jordan and husband Nick, Regan Sink, Logan Allred, Kendal Allred, Keaton Osborne and Larsen Osborne; and three great-grandchildren, Audrey Childress, Ella Claire Goins and Benny Goins III. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 6, at Fair Grove United Methodist Church in Thomasville, with the Rev. Elise Kennedy, the Rev. Jimmy Norred and Tim Wray (Mr. Wray’ s son) officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family requests that memorials be directed to the American Diabetes. Association, N.C. Affiliate, 222 S. Church St., Suite 366M, Charlotte, NC 28202.

Barbara M. Mann
Barbara M. Mann, 51, of Clemmons died March 27 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born August 17, 1950, in Bloomfield, N.J., to James Carr Moore and Marguerite Bell Moore. A compassionate teacher, she taught in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system for more than 20 years, until she was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. A devout Christian, she was an active member at Clemmons First Baptist Church, where she worshipped with her friends and family and taught Sunday school. She dedicated her life to her husband and children and took pride in their achievements in gymnastics, basketball, baseball, and above all, the classroom. She resided in Clemmons for more than 24 years. During her 51 years, she touched the lives of so many, and her three-year battle with cancer inspired everyone who knew her.
Surviving are her parents, James Carr Moore and Marguerite Bell Moore of Whispering Pines; her husband, Steven Douglas Mann Sr.; her children, Kimberly, Steven, Kelly, Katie and Michael; and her sister Nanci Haines of Dumfries, Va.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons First Baptist Church followed by a graveside service at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, Clemmons.

Anil Kumar Deb
Anil Kumar Deb, 66, of Clemmons died March 26. Born February 1, 1936, in Bombay, India, to Prafulla Chandra and Tara Deb, he lived and worked in many countries before immigrating to the United States. Stating that his religion was "the religion of my conscience," he led a principled life that valued caring for his family above all else.
Surviving are his mother, Tara; his wife of 32 years, Jiwan; his daughter, Trishala; his son, Robindra; his sisters, Supriya Dasgupta and Suniti Ghosh; and his brother, Atul Kumar Deb; and their loving families.
A memorial service was held at Vogler & Sons in Clemmons.

Nancy Stroud Colbert
Nancy Stroud Colbert, 68, of Advance died March 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born August 8, 1933, in Brevard to Harry St. Clair Stroud and Fleeta Keever Stroud Whitaker. She was a member of Farmington United Methodist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 17 years of service.
Surviving are her husband, Howard (Pete) Colbert, of the home; a daughter, Teresa Colber, of Lewisville; a son, Phillip Colbert and wife Zelda of East Bend; two grandchildren, Shannon Nicole Colbert and Andrew Phillip Colbert; a brother, Harry (Bud) Stroud and wife Irene of Mocksville; four aunts, Louise Stroud and Jessie Lib Hinkle, both of Mocksville, Thelma Bagwell, of Rock Hill, S.C., and Connie Campbell, of Loray; and a niece, Sandra Coulson and husband Myron and their daughter, Emily, of Mocksville.
Funeral services were held at Farmington United Methodist Church with Rev. Mindy Snyder, Chaplain A.G. Parker and Rev. David Nolan officiating. A graveside service was held at Farmington Community Cemetery.

Deborah Ann Walker Boggs
Deborah Ann Walker Boggs, 50, of Lewisville died March 25 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 18, 1951, to Barbara Pike Eisenlohr and the late Bobby Pike. She was a faithful and dedicated employee of Gray, Callison & Co. for 19 years.
Surviving are her mother and stepfather, Barabra and Gerald Eisenlohr; two sons, Scott Walker and wife Nayda and Jason Walker; a brother, Mike Pike; two grandchildren, Austin Walker and Tyler Sides; her grandmother, Goldie James; a stepsister, Kathy Trivette; a stepbrother, Dennis Swaim; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Jacky B. Ritter Sr. officiating, and burial followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Nancy Howard Hendrix
Nancy Howard Hendrix, 69, of Clemmons died March 27 at her home. She was born June 12, 1932, in Forsyth County to James Dermont and Ella Stevens Howard. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Hendrix.
Surviving are two daughters, Sherry McCulloh and husband Lee of Mocksville and Lynn Thompson of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Stephan Thompson and wife Shaun, Eric McCulloh and Matt McCulloh; and a great-grandson, Ryan Thompson.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with Rev. Glenn Sellers and Rev. Otis Clampitt officiating.

Elsie McCutcheon Long
Elsie McCutcheon Long, 87, of Winston-Salem died March 25. She was born May 13, 1914, to William Marshall Scott McCutcheon and Elda Goold McCutcheon in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She was a registered nurse, having done her nurse training at Orange County Memorial Hospital in Orlando, Fla. In 1939, she began her work as a private nurse for William Neal Reynolds after he became ill while in Orlando. She was subsequently employed full time as his nurse and moved to Tanglewood Farm in Clemmons, where she worked for Reynolds for the last 12 years of his life. After his death, she married L.D. Long and took great interest in his work in the establishment of Tanglewood Park. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem and was involved in supporting a number of local charitable organizations, including Reynolda House, the Tanglewood Park Foundation and the Winston-Salem Foundation. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Lawrence D. Long; her sister, Muriel McCutcheon Albaugh; and her brother, Wilmer Goold McCutcheon.
Surviving are a son, L. Donald Long Jr. and wife Anne Rhys Long; a granddaughter, Anne Rhys Long; a grandson, Lawrence D. Long III; a brother, William Marshall McCutcheon; a sister, Betty M. Stuller; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Salem Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church of Winston-Salem.

Dorothy Correll Petree
Dorothy Correll Petree, 82, of Winston-Salem died March 14. She was a lifelong native of Winston-Salem. Born June 30, 1919, she was the 10th child of John Correll and Lummie Jane Foster Correll of Davie County. Prior to her marriage to the late Carl Lee Petree in 1941, she worked at the Forsyth County Courthouse. Afterwards she became a full-time housewife.
Surviving are her second husband of 10 years, Richard M. Drake; six children, Linda P. Seiwell and husband Richard of West Chester, Pa., Jane E. Petree and Carlene Petree, both of Winston-Salem, Kathy Petree and Cris P. Charlier and husband Robert, all of Clemmons and Clinton Lee Petree of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Andy Seiwell, and Julie Seiwell of West Chester Pa, Clinton Lee Petree Jr. of Winston-Salem, Danielle Anne Petree of Bermuda Run and Allison Leigh Drake of Cornelius.
A private memorial service was held.

Veronica Helen Soncini Grupp
Veronica Helen Soncini Grupp, 87, of Advance died March 28 at Meadowbrook Manor of Davie. She was born April 28, 1914 in Queens, N.Y. to the late Paride and Helem Fullum Soncini. She loved plants, was an avid gardener and loved to cook, and enjoyed doing crafts for the Holy Family Church bazaar. She was preceded in death by her former husband, George J. Grupp; three brothers; and one granddaughter, Juliette Ziegler-Westwood.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail G. Stemper and husband Jack of Clemmons, and Lynne H. Evans of Margate, N.J.; six grandchildren, Andrea Johnson and husband Robert of Colorado Springs, Co., Alicia Stemper of Hillsborough, Jennifer Lotus and husband David of Margate, N.J., Audrey Saloka and husband James of Ashburn, Va., John Stemper IV and wife Azra of Zurich, Switzerland, and James Stemper and wife Amy of Clemmons; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, George Soncini of Hicksville, N.Y.; and one sister, Dolores Prezgay of Masury, Ohio.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 6 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Michael Butner officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Alene Canter Johnson
Alene Canter Johnson, 77, of Clemmons died March 30 at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home in Clemmons. She was born August 22, 1924, in Forsyth County to the late Charlie Lee and Nancy Doty Canter. She was a charter member of Immanuel Baptist Church and attended faithfully as long as her health permitted. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Johnson, in March 1988; sisters, Mary Stewart, Macie Ellis and twin sister Irene Binkley, six brothers, Henry, Elmer, Fred, Buck, Ralph and George Canter.
Surviving are a daughter, Juanita Shermer and husband Henry, and a son, Ralph Johnson and wife Carol, all of Clemmons; grandchildren, Melissa Hire and husband Jeff, Jamie Shermer and wife April, both of Clemmons, Stephanie Mitchell and husband Steve of Columbia, S.C., Nada Hepler and husband Howard of East Bend, and Allen Johnson of Asheville; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Catherine Hepler, Connor, Wesley and Trey Mitchell, Andrew Hire, Ethan, Cole and Troy Shermer; a sister, Lucille Hutchens of Pfafftown; and numerous nieces, nephews and family friends.
Funeral services were held at Immanuel Baptist Church.

Eula Marie Nichols
Eula Marie Nichols, 80, of Clemmons, formerly of Roanoke, Va., died August 31. She was a native of Roanoke and an area resident for many years and was a member of First Christian Church Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her husband, M.O. Brady; her parents, E. Randolph and Clair Wheeler Nichols; a grandson, Ashley G. Laughinghouse; a brother, Edward R. Nichols; and a sister, Dorothy K. Keys.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and David Daisley Jr. of Winston- Salem; two sisters, Mary Sue Nichols Grisso of Salem, Va., and Willie Mae Nichols Early of Roanoke; her grandson, W. Scott Laughinghouse of Cary; a great-grandchild, Jordan L. Laughlinghouse; three nieces; and three nephews.
A graveside service was held at Sherwood Memorial Park with Rev. Jim Rivers officiating. A graveside service was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Denny G. Early Sr. in Roanoke.

Nelson Leon Johnson
Nelson Leon Johnson, 83, of Pfafftown died August 24 at Carteret General Hospital. He was on Wake Island as an iron worker when he was captured and held as a POW for four years. He continued as an iron worker in Indiana until 1980 when he retired to North Carolina.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Helen Baker Johnson of Pfafftown; a son, Robert. E. Boswell of Winston-Salem; a brother, William Wray Johnson of Lake Station, Ind.; a sister, Maudie J. Mladenik of Hobart, Ind.; two grandchildren, Scott C. Boswell and Christine E. Boswell Clay; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew S. Boswell and Nicholas C. Boswell.
A memorial service was held at Kingdom Hall in Winston-Salem.

Lorraine Hughes Tesner
Lorraine Hughes Tesner, 85, of Winston-Salem died August 28 at the Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born March 7, 1917, in Mitchell County to Janet Hughes. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and retired from AT&T. She was preceded in death by her husband, Houston Joseph Tesner.
Surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Crestview Memorial Park with Bill Teague officiating.

Sadie Lawrence Rierson
Sadie Lawrence Rierson, 89, of Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons died September 1. She was born April 26, 1913, in Surry County to Daniel L. and Ollie Woodruff Lawrence. She had retired from Hanes Knitting and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Jane Copple and husband Benny of Winston-Salem; two sons, Ronnie Rierson and wife Faye of Clemmons and Charles Rierson Jr. and wife Joanne of Birmingham, Ala.; three sisters, Lestine Mackie and husband Grady of Yadkinville, Gladys Stuart of Clemmons and Mavareen Foil of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating, and burial followed in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Margaret Grutzius Braun
Margaret Grutzius Braun, 100, of Clemmons died August 30 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 25, 1901, in Chicago, Ill., to Nicholas and Mary Barthel Grutzius. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Braun, and a son, Henry (Bud) Braun.
Surviving are a daughter, Joan Human and husband Richard of Clemmons; a son, Richard Braun and wife Susan of Wheaton, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Tohle Funeral Home in Chicago, Ill.

Gary O. Cline
Gary O. Cline, 55, of Lewisville died August 27 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born October 15, 1946, the son of Frankie J. Yow Cline Bailey and the late Errett Odell Cline. He was a fork-lift operator for National Textiles in Advance.
Surviving are his mother, Frankie J. Bailey of Lewisville; two aunts, Faith Garder of Winston-Salem and Louise Heap of Pennsylvania; four nephews; and a special aunt, Ruby Mabe of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at the VA National Cemetery in Salisbury.

Daniel Ray Masters Sr.
Daniel Ray “Danny” Masters Sr., 50, of Leland died August 22 at New Hanover Medical Center. He was born December 8, 1951, in Baltimore, Md., a son of Thomas Mack Masters Sr. and the late Mary Synder Masters. He was preceded in death by his mother; and a daughter, Michelle Lynn Masters.
Surviving, in addition to his father of Winston-Salem, are his wife, Deborah Lippy Masters of Leland; a son, Daniel Ray Masters Jr.; and a daughter, Danielle Nicole Masters, also of Leland; his stepmother, Pansy Masters; brothers Thomas Masters Jr. and wife Judy of Kernersville, William Masters and wife Carolyn of Winston-Salem, Jack Masters Sr. and wife Mary of Clemmons and Carl Masters Sr. and Mack Masters, both of Winston-Salem; sisters Katherine Taylor and husband L.C. of Clemmons, Tammy Barcheisi and husband Leo of Rhode Island and Zera Hensley and husband Jeff of West Virginia; grandchildren Daniel Adam Ezell Jr., Marcus Ray Ezell and Sable Nicole Ezell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Brother Lester Smith and Brother Don Collins officiating. Burial followed at Mount Gur Cemetery.

Jerry Wayne Bracken
Jerry Wayne Bracken, 55, of Winston-Salem died August 25 at his residence. He was born December 1, 1946, in Rowan County to the late William H. and Mattie Wood Bracken. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, a minister of the gospel for 15 years and worked for Precision Concepts as a quality engineer.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Martha Stewart Bracken; three sons, William (Chris) Bracken of Advance, Timmy W. Bracken and wife Crystal of Clemmons and Jeremy W. Bracken and wife Colleen of Vilseck, Germany; a daughter, Tashia M. Bracken of Greensboro; a foster son, Joey Carter of Mocksville; two brothers, William E. Bracken of Statesville and Lonnie P. Bracken of Mocksville; a sister, Nelia E. Bracken of Mocksville; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Gryder and Rev. Curtis Gibson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Peggy June Peacock Johnson
Peggy June Peacock Johnson, 67, of Tobaccoville died August 22 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born June 27, 1935, in Forsyth County to Kerner and Eliza Conard Peacock Johnson. She was employed with Mayberry’s Restaurant and was of the Moravian faith.
Surviving are her husband, Mack D. Johnson of the home; two daughters, Debbie McLaurin of Winston-Salem and Bobbie Johnson of Lewisville; two sons, Michael Johnson of Winston-Salem and Steve Johnson of Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren, one being Victor Macies who lived at the home.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
