S. WALDO HILLIARD
DURHAM - S. Waldo Hilliard, 87, of 1911 Ruffin St., Durham, died at his home early April 23, 1999.
He was a native of Wake Co., a former member of the Green Level Baptist Church in Apex, N.C., more recently attending Watt's Street Baptist Church in Durham.
Mr. Hilliard was a retired bookkeeper in the Tobacco Industry.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 25, 1999 in the Apex Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Green Level Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors are: son, Conley Hilliard and wife, Robin of Raleigh; sisters, Jasmer H. Sears of Apex, Iola Harris of Mt. Gilead; two grandchildren, Carson and Madison Hilliard.
Mr. Hilliard was preceded in death by a son, Sidney W. Hilliard Jr., in 1978.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 1999 at Apex Funeral Home, 511 West Williams St. (HWY. 55) Apex, NC; and other times at the home of Jasmer H. Sears, 727 New Hope Church Rd., Apex, NC.
Memorials may be given to the Green Level Baptist Church, 8509 Green Level Church Rd., Apex, N.C. 27502; or to the Watt's Street Baptist Church, 800 Watt's Street, Durham, N.C. 27701.
The Norris Sunday school class at Watt's Street Baptist Church will be honorary pallbearers.
DR. RICHARD L. JOHNSON
CARY - Dr. Richard L. Johnson, 74, of Cary, North Carolina and formerly of Kenmore, New York, died at his home on Thursday, April 22, 1999 after a lingering illness. He was born April 12, 1925 in Hornell, New York, the son of the late Henry Michael and Agnes Conway Johnson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Conway Johnson and a daughter, Molly Ann Johnson.
He was a native of New York State his entire life until 1996 when he relocated to North Carolina along with his wife of 46 years, Irene. Dr. Johnson was a veteran of WWII. In 1945 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Army Air Corp. Following WWII, he attended Canisius College and the University of Buffalo Dental School, graduating in 1951. He completed his residency in the field of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery at Millard Fillmore Hospital, and practiced from 1954 until his retirement in 1986. He served for a period of time as Chairman of the Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery Department at both DeGraff Memorial Hospital and Millard Fillmore Hospital-Gates Circle. Dr. Johnson also served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Oral and Maxillo-Face Surgery at the University of Buffalo. His honorary memberships included: Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Fellow-American College of Dentists, Fellow-International College of Dentist, Fellow-American College of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgeons, and Founder of the Western New York affiliate of the American College of Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery.
Survivors include: his wife, Irene Kelly Johnson; two sons, Dr. Peter C. (Karen) Johnson of Wexford, PA, Patrick L. (Anna Marie) Johnson of East Amherst, NY; five daughters, Mary K. Johnson of Kenmore, NY, Monica L. Sleap (Richard) of Winston-Salem, NC, Margaret E. Fleming (Carey) of Apex, NC, Madonna S. Johnson of Durham, NC, and M. Kelly Jacobius (David) of Pfafftown, NC; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer and Katherine Sleap, Christopher and Kevin Johnson, Caroline, Thomas, and Elizabeth Johnson, Brian and Brittany Fleming, and Allie and Joshua Jacobius; two sisters-in-law, Eileen M. Johnson of Yorktown Heights, NY, Mary Isabel Quittenton of Rochester, NY, along with five nephews and one niece.
Family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 25, 1999 at the Dengler & Roberts Funeral Home, Rolling Chapel, 3000 Delaware Ave., Kenmore, NY.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30 a.m., Monday at St. Anns Catholic Church in Hornell, NY. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Rexville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, Inc., 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.
JOHNNIE W. LAYTON
FRANKLINTON - Johnnie Winston Layton, 88, died April 21, 1999 in Britthaven Nursing Home. He was a member of the Franklinton Baptist Church and a retired health tech.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and John Stark Layton.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Sandling Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dupre Sanders officiating. Burial, Fairview Cemetery.
Surviving: wife, Margie Collins Layton; son, Winston Layton of Franklinton; sister, Louise Pridgen of Louisburg; grandchildren, Kimberly and Charles Layton.

RALEIGH - Mrs. Orleaner E. Medlin, 84, of 2725 Howard Rd., died Thursday. Funeral service 1 p.m. Monday, Baptist Grove Church. Burial, church cemetery.

ADA MINOR PEARCE
ZEBULON - Ada Minor Pearce, 78, formerly of Route 3, died Friday, April 23, 1999 at Hillhaven Convalescent Center. She was born in Franklin County and was the daughter of the late Otha and Laura Jefferies Minor. She was married to Eric Pearce who preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held at 1 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, April 24, 1999 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest with the Rev. W.C. Barham officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens in Zebulon.
Mrs. Pearce is survived by her brothers, Earl Minor and Andrew Minor of Wake Forest; special friend, Don Katzenmiller.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1543 Bethlehem Church Road, Youngsville, NC 27596.

INEZ CAUSEY POOLE
COATS - Mrs. Inez Causey Poole, age 77, of 594 N. Orange St., died Thursday at her home after an extended illness.
Funeral services 11 a.m. Saturday at the Coats Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Revs. Jesse W. Mooney, Jr. and A. Howard Beard. Burial will follow in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Poole was born December 8, 1921, in Durham County to the late Herbert Roscoe and Minnie Stone Causey. She was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Roscoe Causey, Jr., and a grandson, David Lee Trogdon. Mrs. Poole was a retired beautician, seamstress, and homemaker. She was also a member of the Coats Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, David Lentis Poole; daughter, Sandra Poole Trogdon of Raleigh; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Judith Poole of Raleigh; sisters, Bonnie Roberts of Angier, Dorothy Fox and Mary Ellen Moffitt both of Chuluota, FL; grandchildren, Robert Lentis Trogdon of Richmond, VA, William Fate Trogdon of Coats, and Nichole Poole of Angier; great-granddaughters, Amanda Trogdon and Logan Trogdon both of Raleigh.
The family received friends at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats 7-9 p.m. Friday.
WILLIAM "BILL" RAY
WAKE FOREST - William Martin "Bill" Ray, 54, of 236 Forestville Road, died Thursday, April 22, 1999. He was a veteran of the US Air Force; was retired from GTE and was currently employed by Dimco.
Graveside funeral services will beheld at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, April 25, 1999 at the Carpenter Family Cemetery on Six Forks Road with full military honors.
Mr. Ray is survived by his wife, Edna C. Ray of Oxford; mother, Mavis C. Reams of Wake Forest; brothers, Roger Ray and his wife, Danny, of Castalia, Euston Ray and his wife, Dorothy, of Phoenix, AZ; daughters, Nichole Lee Ray and Kimberly Gregory of Durham; three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Needham Ray.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home from 7-8:30 Sunday evening and at the home of Mavis Reams at other times.
MARIE PIERCE SKIDMORE
CARY - Marie Pierce Skidmore, 61, died Friday, April 23, 1999. Mrs. Skidmore was born in Northampton Co., and came to the Raleigh area over 40 years ago. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, who will be missed by all.
Surviving are her daughter, Karen Brown and husband Kevin of Apex; stepson, Col. Rick W. Rogers, USAF and wife Mary Lou of Omaha, NE; sister, Kathryn Taylor of Lancaster, SC; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, in February.
The funeral will be Sunday, 3:00 p.m. at South Hills Baptist Church, with interment following in Montlawn Memorial Park. Friends may visit at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, Saturday, 4-6 p.m.

CHARLES LEE STACK
MONROE - Mr. Charles Lee Stack, age 20, of Monroe, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 24, 1999, in the First Baptist Church of Indian Trail, North Carolina with the family receiving friends immediately following the service Saturday night at the church. Burial for Mr. Stack will be at 12 noon on Sunday, April 25, 1999 in the First Baptist Church of Indian Trail Cemetery.
Mr. Stack was born August 9, 1978 in Wake County, North Carolina, a son of Mr. Gary Alan Stack and Mrs. Connie Lou West Stack. He was a self-employed automobile mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shannon Hucks Stack of Mint Hill, NC; son, "Master" Cameron Lee Stack of Mint Hill, NC; parents, Gary Alan and Connie W. Stack of Monroe, NC; brother, Joseph Stack of Monroe, NC; sister, Mysti S. Creacy of Greenville, NC; one niece and one nephew; maternal grandparents, Charles and Tynie West of Lillington, NC; paternal grandparents, Mack Lee and Thelma Stack of Mt. Holly, NC; and several Aunts and Uncles.

JUANITA F. STARR
RALEIGH - Juanita F. Starr, 95, formerly of Richmond, died April 22, 1999, at the Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center in Raleigh, NC, after a short illness.
She was born on October 4, 1903, in Switzerland County, IN, to Andrew and Olive Gillis Detmer. She had formerly lived in the Richmond area for most of her life, moving to North Carolina just a year ago. She was a homemaker, a former owner of Starr Farm and enjoyed playing basketball. She was previously the oldest member of the Faith United Lutheran Church in Richmond.
She is survived by a daughter, Sallie Bowman of Raleigh; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; her husband, Robert Starr, who died in 1975, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be held Sunday, April 25, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Stegall-Berheide-Orr Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Earlham Cemetery in Richmond, IN.
Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 1-2 p.m.

JAMES LUTHER STATON JR.
MARTINSVILLE, VA - James Luther Staton, Jr., 64, died Thursday, April 22, 1999 at Beverly Health Care Center. He was the son of the late James L. Staton, Sr. and Emily Virginia Purvis Staton. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 31 years of service as a sales representative. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Bethel, NC, member of the Elks Club of Martinsville, past member of Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department, member of Exchange Club of Collinsville.
Surviving: wife of 42 years, Betsy James Staton; sisters, Beverly Staton Stocks of Greensboro, NC, Lois Ann Staton Langston of Raleigh, NC; brother, William P. Staton of Havelock, NC; aunts, Dr. Mary Lois Staton of Greenville, NC, Audrie Purvis of Bethel, NC; several nieces and nephews.

FRANKLINTON - Lucille Goswick Wilder, 89, died April 23, 1999 at Louisburg Nursing Center. She was a member of Perry's Chapel Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Wilder. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Perry's Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Kantner officiating. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: daughter, Mary Ann Hagwood of Franklinton; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Patricia Wilder, Melvin Lee and Jean Wilder, all of Franklinton; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

CARRIE B. TYSON ALSTON
RALEIGH - Mrs. Carrie B. Tyson Alston of 1408 Beverly Drive entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 13, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Haywood Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Russell Sanders officiating.
Visitation prior to service from 1:00 until 1:30 p.m. Interment will be observed at Carolina Biblical Gardens.
She loved God and her family. She will be remembered for her beautiful voice and sophisticated dress.
She is survived by her husband, Celious Alston; a half sister, Ruth Griffin of Raleigh; mother-in-law, Mrs. Julia Mary Lyons Alston; a son, Celious "C.C." Harmon; a stepdaughter, Veronica Wyche; and special friend, Grace Alexander; and a host of other family and friends.
Born and raised in Raleigh, Mrs. Carrie Alston will be missed by all who knew her.
