Charles Preston Sr.
Charles “Tom” Preston Sr., 74, of Winston-Salem died January 26 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born December 20, 1932, in Forsyth County to Herman Fenton and Ila Mae Sprinkle Preston. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife, Joy Taylor Preston; two sons, C. Thomas Preston Jr. of Gainesville, Ga., and Mark T. Preston and wife Suzanne of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Taylor Preston and Melanie Preston of Clemmons; and a brother, Herman Fenton Preston Jr. of Chapel Hill.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home, Reynolda Road. A private interment followed.

Cemon Wilson Cooke Jr.
Cemon “Buddy” Wilson Cooke Jr., 56, of Winston-Salem died January 25. He was born October 22, 1950 in Forsyth County to Cemon Wilson Cooke Sr. and Ella Barbara Kinyoun Cooke. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stanleyville. He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Jeffrey Gray Cooke.
Surviving are his wife of 12 years, Sandy S. Cooke, and a daughter, Mindy Hendrix, both of the home; a sister, Debbie LeMasters and husband Mike of Clemmons; three brothers, Phillip Cooke of Clemmons, Danny Cooke and wife Donna of Lexington and Terry Cooke and wife Debbie of Denton; his mother-in-law, Marcell Smith; a brother-in-law, Larry Smith, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Kathy Larson and husband David of Winston-Salem and Norma Wiginton and husband Ron of Pinnacle; an uncle and aunt, Dallas and Lavern Cooke of Winston-Salem; and several special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Stanleyville with Pastor Terry Rausch Jr. and Pastor Eddie Honeycutt officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Harrell Bruce Hill
Harrell Bruce Hill, 85 died January 26 at Arbor Acres. He was born in Reidsville on June 22, 1921, to William Harvey and Mercia Lee Bruce Hill. He worked in the Treasurers Office at the N.C. Shipbuilding Co., a division of Newport News Shipping & Dry Dock. In 1943, he married Margaret Van Hoy of Walkertown. After serving in the Navy in the South Pacific, he was discharged in 1946 as a lieutenant. He began work at Western Electric upon its opening in Winston-Salem in 1946, and spent 34 years with them in Winston-Salem, Kansas City, Chicago and New York before retiring in 1980 as vice president of finance. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Forsyth Country Club and The Downtown Rotary Club, as well as a board member for the Boy Scouts of America Old Hickory Council and Treasurer of N.Y. Financial Executive Institute. While in Chicago and Kansas City, he was active with United Way and The Red Cross. He was an avid supporter of UNC Chapel Hill. In addition to his church and volunteer work, he enjoyed gardening and golf.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Margaret Van Hoy; a brother, W.H. Hill Jr. of Reidsville; a sister, Nancy Hill Neese of Greensboro; a brother-in-law, Hale B. Van Hoy and wife Peg of Clemmons; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at the family plot at Walkertown Baptist Church, followed by a memorial service at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating.

Henry Myers Cope
Henry Myers Cope, 80, of Clemmons died March 20 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of Davie Funeral Service in Mocksville.

Louise Jones Hanks
Louise Jones Hanks, 95, of Pfafftown died March 18 at Clemmons Nursing and Rehabilitation. She was born November 14, 1911, in Forsyth County to James R. and Sudie Grubbs Jones. She was a member of Love’s United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lonnie C. Hanks Sr.; a son, Lonnie C. Hanks Jr.; and a daughter, Norma Hanks Mattucci.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Linda W. Hanks of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Dr. Robert J. Mattucci of Waretown, N.J.; three grandchildren, April Hanks of Winston-Salem, Lee Ann Stephens of New Jersey, John T. Mattucci of Boston, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren, Alexis, Emily and Olivia Stephens, Kayla, Gregory and Jill Louise Mattucci.
A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Rev. James T. Webb Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to Love’s United Methodist Church.

Thomas Brady Caudle Jr.
Thomas Brady Caudle Jr., 82, of Winston-Salem, died March 19 at Springwood Care Center. He was born in Forsyth County to Ruth Spurgeon Caudle and Thomas Brady Caudle Sr. in 1924. He was a member of Grace Baptist Temple, where he was active for many years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and served with Headquarters Company Second Ranger Battalion. He was wounded while serving in action and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Eamet Campaign Medal with five Bronze Service Stars and the Good Conduct Medal, while serving in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe. He received the Presidential Citation for gallantry. He retired from Douglas Battery Co., where he served as battery division salesman for 39 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Atrice Johnston Caudle; and a son, Michael Thomas Caudle.
Surviving are his son, Robert Patrick Caudle and wife Carla of Connecticut; his daughter, Janice Marie Caudle of Willoughby, Ohio; three grandchildren, Sarah Caudle of Willoughby, Ohio, Brieann Caudle and Brittany Caudle, both of Orlando, Fla.; four brothers, Oscar Caudle and wife Frances of Winston-Salem, Cecil Caudle and wife Judy of Rural Hall, Ray Caudle and wife Ruth of Clemmons, and Roger Caudle and wife Barbara of King; seven sisters, Margaret Wood, Evelyn Holder and husband Ray, Florence Gibson, all of Winston-Salem, Hazel Cook of Detroit, Mich., Jean Carter of East Bend, Jackie Shore and husband Gerald of Charlotte, and Gerrie McDaniel of Winston-Salem; and 23 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Grace Baptist Temple with Rev. Ed Sears officiating. Burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park, with military rites by the Memorial Honor Guard.

Hazel Clark
Hazel Clark, 82, of Winston-Salem died March 17 at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended battle with cardiac disease. She was born Hazel Florence Quick May 6, 1924, in Jamestown, N.D., to Warren R. Quick and Agnes McDonald Neil Quick. In 1939 her family moved to Howell, Mich., where she lived most of the rest of her life. She married Ransom Chester Clark in 1943. They resided near Howell and had two children, Douglas and Thomas. Following Chester’s death in 1972, she was married briefly in the 1970s to Ernest Runyion of Howell and in the 1980s to Henry R. Cernota of Cicero, Ill. Living briefly in Cicero, as well as in Rialto, Calif., and Denton, Texas, her final move from Michigan was to Winston-Salem in December 2006, residing at Brighton Gardens assisted-care community. Having worked as a secretary and bookkeeper in a credit bureau and a state hospital, she was most dedicated to her final, longtime employment as parish secretary for St. Joseph Catholic Church in Howell, retiring in 1979. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Howell and was a talented musician.
Surviving are her sons, Douglas M. Clark and wife Josie of Orange, Calif., and Thomas S. Clark and wife Elizabeth of Lewisville; five grandchildren, Jason Clark of Clever, Mo., Ashley Clark Schimelman and husband Paul of San Marcos, Texas, Alexander Clark and wife Marsha of Republic, Mo., Alison Clark of Dallas, Texas, and Owen Clark of Dallas, Texas; and a great-grandchild, Natasha Rose Schimelman of San Marcos.
Burial at Lakeview Cemetery in Livingston County, Michigan, will be held at a later date.

Margaret Jane Lyerly Miller
Margaret Jane Lyerly Miller, 92, of Pfafftown died March 19. She was born May 16, 1914, in Rowan County to Jack L. Lyerly Sr. and Lizzie Belle Gobble Lyerly. On August 10, 1934, she married Brice W. Miller and lived in Salisbury until 1948, when the family moved to Winston-Salem. She was a former member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church and a current member of Centenary United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Greta L. Harris and Helen L. Haynes; and five brothers, Ralph L. Lyerly, Edgar G. Lyerly, Glenn R. Lyerly, J.L. Lyerly Jr. and Gilbert W. Lyerly.
Surviving are her son, Charles J. Miller and wife Ann of Winston-Salem; her daughters, Rita M. Johnson and husband Hiram of Winston-Salem and Bronah M. Livingston and husband Bill of Denver, N.C.; her grandchildren, Todd Miller of San Diego, Calif., Sharon Bickel and husband Don of Charlotte, David Miller and wife Laura of Tega Cay, S.C., John Johnson of Ahoskie, Charles Johnson of Winston-Salem, Laura Livingston of Falls Church, Va., and Meredith Bates and husband Joey of Charlotte; her great-grandchildren, Melissa Bickel, Margaret Bickel and Kate Miller; and dear friend Price Greer.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Yarbrough officiating.

George Oxley
George “Bill” Oxley, 77, of Taylorsville died March 20 at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born November 2, 1929, in Charleston, W.Va., to the late John and Goldie Oxley. He was employed by Gary Lowe Design. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Surviving are a son, David Oxley of Marietta, Ga.; two daughters, Cindy Oxley Zimmerman and husband Mike of Clemmons and Debby Oxley Cummins and husband Bob of Simpsonville, S.C.; a brother, Lovell Oxley and wife Minnie of St. Albans W.Va.; two sisters, Sybil Young of Hurricane, W.Va., and Faye Oxley of West Virginia; a grandson, Robbie Cummins of Simpsonville; a granddaughter, Lauren Zimmerman of Clemmons; and special friends Gary and Brenda Lowe of Hickory.
Funeral services were held at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ray Kruntorad officiating.

Paul Francis Riedl
Paul Francis Riedl, 90, of New Bern died March 21. He was born in Braintree, Mass. He had been a faithful member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Greensboro for 48 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus prior to his move to New Bern in 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Jeanette L. Riedl; and a son, Phillip Joseph Riedl.
Surviving are a son, Paul F. Riedl Jr. of Clemmons; a daughter-in-law, Margie R. Riedl of Greensboro, widow of Phillip J. Riedl; a daughter, Linda R. Cotten and husband John R. Graham of New Bern.; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-granddaughters; three stepgreat-granddaughters; a stepgreat-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Requiem Mass of Thanksgiving and Celebration was held at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Right Rev. Monsignor Anthony Marcaccio officiating. A committal service and burial followed at Westminster Gardens in Greensboro.

Jerry Ray Cox
Jerry Ray Cox, 67, of Winston-Salem died March 23 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a long-term illness. He was born June 1, 1939, in Forsyth County to the late Russell K. and Hazel Shutt Cox. He served in the U.S. Army and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was a lifelong avid hunter and fisherman and a collector of antique tractors and engines. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth G. Cox.
Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Betty T. Cox of the home; four stepchildren, Mike and Jennifer Ring of Pasedena, Md., Allison and Bill Brown of Clemmons, John and Kim Ring of Chapel Hill, and Jennifer and Thomas Bryant Jr. of Pinnacle; two sons, Derek and Todd Cox of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren, Aysha and Zachary Ring, Max and Nathan Ring, Lindsay, Kevin and Kasey Brown and Morgan Bryant; a brother, Sammy Cox of Advance; a sister, Margaret Link of Lexington; a nephew, Rusty Link; and a niece, Caroline Myers.
A graveside service was held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with Chaplain Rennie Adcock officiating.

Jerry Slone York
Jerry Slone York, 60, of Winston-Salem died March 21 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 1, 1946, in Fentress County, Tenn., to Raymond and Nell Farley York. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his mother of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mary York Henry and husband Joseph of Pasadena, Calif.; a sister, Wilma Stewart and husband Johnny of Lewisville; a special niece, Angela Henry of Arcadia, Calif.; a nephew, Troy Henry, and niece, Shannon Henry, of San Francisco, Calif.; a niece, Erin Fortugno of Glen Gardner, N.J.; and three great-nieces, Ashley Henry and Ava and Lana Fortugno.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

Franklin Delano Morgan
Franklin Delano “Dee” Morgan, 73, of Winston-Salem died March 24 at his home. He was born in McDowell County to the late Thomas Charles Morgan Sr. and Amber Geddes Morgan. He was a member at Pine Grove United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean War. He especially enjoyed working in his yard. He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation Appraisal Division. He was preceded in death were by his wife, Vera Brown Morgan; his parents; three brothers; and a sister.
Surviving are three children, a son, Scott Morgan and wife Rhonda of Clemmons; two daughters, Sandee Morgan of Fishersville, Va., and Melinda Evans and husband Brad of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Ashley Evans and David and Brett Morgan; a brother, Paul Morgan of Flint, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Sylvia Wilhelm officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Dwight Byrd
Dwight Byrd of Clemmons died April 3.
A graveside service was held at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

Gene Ray Springs Sr.
Gene Ray Springs Sr., 59, of Clemmons died April 6 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are his two children, Beck and Gene Jr., and his three brothers, Clayton, Larry (Otis), and Terence.
Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Edward Paul Hull
Edward Paul Hull, 80, of Clemmons died April 2. He was born on March 9, 1927 in Guilford County in the city of Kernersville to the late James and Edna Bowles Hull. He was one of 17 children, of which eight are still living. He was married to Rachel Cope and together they had 11 children. Anywhere he went, so did the word of God. He was always telling people “God is with you, pray to God and He will lift your troubles away.” He was preceded in death by his wife and two sons, Jerry and David.
Surviving are nine children, Eddie and wife Elaine, Jackie, Larry and wife Angie, Steve and wife Donna, Linda and husband Sam, Rachel Lea and husband Bruce, Teresa and husband Mark, Cathy and husband Jim, and Pat; 27 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Lexwin Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with Brother Danny Hauser officiating. Burial followed at Greer’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Linwood. Memorials may be made to one of two research groups for improving mental health, NARSAD: The Mental Health Research Association, 60 Cutter Mill Road, Suite 404, Great Neck, NY 11021 or The Medical Foundation of North Carolina, 880 Martin Luther King Blvd., Chapel Hill, NC, 27514. Include a note with the contribution indicating the gift intention (psychiatry) and honoree (Edward Paul Hull).

William Edward Marler
William Edward “Bill” Marler, 74, of East Bend died April 4 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on February 7, 1933 in Yadkin County to Hal Apperson and Lola Lineberry Marler. He served in the Korean War and was retired from Piedmont Airlines. He enjoyed going to his favorite fishing spot at Emerald Isle and visiting with the friends he had made there. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, J.D. and Jim Marler.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Messick Marler of the home, whom he married on April 6, 1956; two daughters, Kathy Jones and husband Dwain of Clemmons and Rita Caudle and husband Darrell of East Bend; a son, Eddie Marler of Pfafftown; three grandchildren, Kelli Myers and husband Brad, Stephanie Caudle and Colton Jones; a great-grandchild, Nicholas Myers; and a sister, Nancy Culler and husband William of East Bend.
A graveside service was held at Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Ottis Hurst officiating. military honors were conducted by Yadkin VFW Post 10346 and East Bend American Legion Post 336.

Ruth Evelyn Terrell Porter
Ruth Evelyn Terrell Porter, 78, of Clemmons died April 4 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 15, 1928, in Stokes County to Jesse and Ruth Mitchell Terrell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack A. Porter Sr.; three brothers, Paul, Walter Lee and Alfred Terrell; and a sister, Thelma Thompson.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet James and husband Richard of Pfafftown and Ruth Bare and husband Ronnie of Cooleemee; three sons, Jack A. Porter Jr. and wife Ronda of Cooleemee, David Porter and wife Donna of Winston-Salem and Joseph Porter of Clemmons; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Harper; and a brother, Billy Terrell.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bobby Roberson and Rev. Frank Shumate officiating. Burial followed in Gospel Light Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Robert G. Smith
Robert G. Smith, 85, of Clemmons died April 6. He was born June 9, 1921, in Rochester, N.Y. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy Seabees. He was employed by Eastman Kodak Co. for 43 years and retired in 1983.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Virginia; his son, David Smith and wife Becky and their two children, Holly and Jay; his daughter, Nancy O’ Connor and her four children, Matthew, Kristin Boyd, Cory and Chelsea, and great-granddaughter, Farris Boyd; his son Jeffrey Smith and wife Gloria and their three children, Kim, Kathy and Robert and 13 great-grandchildren; and his daughter, Deborah Preston and husband Paul and their two children, Brian and Alex.
A memorial service was held at Clemmons Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem NC 27103.

Mary Barbara Voelkel Perkins
Mary Barbara Voelkel Perkins, 72, of Clemmons died April 6. She was born on September 3, 1934, in Baltimore, Md., to John and Florence Voelkel. She devoted her time to being a wife, mother and grandmother. She served in her church as a member of the choir. She made many friends throughout her life in school, church, bridge and knitting clubs.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, O. Clifford Perkins; children, Robert Perkins, Donald Perkins, Debbie Parrell and Tricia Harrell; grandchildren, Bryan Perkins, Taylor Perkins, Benjamin Perkins, Rebekah Parrell, Nicholas Parrell, Matthew Parrell, Natalie Harrell and Troy Harrell; and her brother, Charles Voelkel.
Funeral services were held at Clemmons United Methodist Church with Rev. Phillip Cole and Rev. Mark Portis officiating. Memorials may be made to Compassion International, Colorado Springs, CO 80997, an organization that helps children throughout the world.

Milbourne L. “Tripp” Joye III
Milbourne L. “Tripp” Joye III, 25, of Clemmons passed away Saturday morning, May 3, 2008, as the result of a car accident on Frye Bridge Road. Tripp was born June 4, 1982, in Charlotte. He was a graduate of West Forsyth High School and attended Cape Fear and Forsyth Technical College. He was employed by Silk Road Technologies as a salesperson. Tripp had a passion for the drums and was in the drum line at West Forsyth High School. He was in a number of bands including The Flaming Skunks, Auto Passion, the Silas, Red Orchestra Radio and most recently, Anything on Fire. Tripp is survived by his father and mother, Milbourne and Linda Joye Jr., of Clemmons; his sister, Meagan Joye of Charleston, S.C.; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Spaulding of Columbia, S.C.; his paternal grandfather, Milbourne Joye Sr. of Gainesville, Ga.; his maternal grandfather and grandmother, Kenneth and Ann Flinchum of Greenwood, S.C.; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, May 6, at Clemmons First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robbie Phillips and the Rev. Steve Foster officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemmons First Baptist Church Youth Ministry, 3530 Clemmons Road, Clemmons, NC 27012. Online condolences may be made at www.salemfh.com.
