LELAND M. HOWLAND
HENDERSON - Leland McIntosh Howland, 84, of 2410 Oxford Road, Henderson, died Saturday, May 22, 1999 in a local nursing home.
A native of Vance County, he was the son of the late William Franklin Howland Sr. and the late Mary McIntosh Howland.
Mr. Howland was a 1936 graduate of N.C. State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in the School of Textiles. he was a retired Corporate Director of Quality Assurance of Harriet-Henderson Yarns, Inc., where he was affiliated for forty-seven years.
Mr. Howland was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Masonic Bodies of Henderson, the Sudan Temple, the Henderson Shrine Club, the Loyal Order of the Moose, and was a charter member of the Henderson Exchange Club.
A graveside funeral service will be held Monday, at 2 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery, conducted by Dr. James Donald Phillips and the Rev. Connie Stutts.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maysel Pace Howland; two daughters, Mary Helen H. Saunders, and husband, Grover Michael Saunders, of Jackson, Tennessee, and Catherine McIntoch Howland of Wilson, N.C.; one grandson, Grover Michael Saunders II, of Huntsville, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Restoration Fund, 114 Church Street, Henderson, N.C. 27536.

CHARLIE "MACK" C.M. JOHNSON
Aug. 2, 1928 - May 22, 1999
GARNER - Charlie Mack (C.M.) Johnson, 70, of 14740 N.C. 50 W., died peacefully Saturday. He was predeceased by his wife, Doris Carroll Johnson. Charlie was the son of the late Eli and Lillian Jones Johnson of Four Oaks. During his career he worked with C.J. Mallard Company, The American Cancer Society and most recently with Sir Walter Chevorlet.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Bryan-Lee Funeral Chapel in Garner. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.
He is survived by his daughters, Teresa LaVoy and son-in-law, Fred of Roxboro, Sheila Hoskins and son-in-law Forrest of Grand Junction, Colo.; sister, Eloise Honeycutt of Four Oaks; brother, Felton Johnson of Hillsborough; and granddaughters, Amy LaVoy Olson and husband Paul of LaGrange, Ga., Holly and Brianna Hoskins of Grand Junction, Colo.

S. REYNOLDS MAY
GREENVILLE - Mr. S. Reynolds May, 84, died Friday, May 21 1999 at Cypress Glen Retirement Center.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. May, a native of Greenville, Alabama, grew up in Dothan. He was a 1935 graduate of Duke University where he played varsity baseball and basketball. During World War II, he served as an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
He first came to Greenville in 1934 to play summer baseball and had made his home here since 1935. He coached at Greenville High School and later began his association with Garris Evans Lumber Company, where he served as president from 1948 until 1969. He was a principal in the development of Brook Valley Country Club and continued in home building and land development until his retirement in 1993.
Mr. May was a member of Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church and had long served in leadership roles and on the Official Board.
Mr. May was an active civil leader all of his adult life and was instrumental in the founding of the Greenville Little League, East Carolina University Foundation, and the Michael Jordan Golf Tournament. He was a noted fund raiser and led numerous campaigns particularly to benefit East Carolina University.
He was a sports enthusiast and particularly enjoyed golf and hunting. He was honored numerous times both locally and in North Carolina. He was named Tar Heel of the week by The News and Observer, was honored by the citizens of Greenville with Reynolds May Day in 1983 and most recently by the Greenville Country Club in April, 1999.
For 58 years he was married to Doris Garris May who preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. May is survived by: daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Lester Z. Brown of Greenville; son and daughter-in-law, Louis G. and Eleanor Rodman May of Washington; grandchildren, Marilyn Brown Gibson and Jeff Gibson of Greenville, Catherine Brown Cox and Mike Cox of Greenville, Camilla Rodman May of Raleigh; two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Z. Brown, 1205 Drexel Lane, Greenville.

MELANIE LEE MEAD
RALEIGH - Melanie Lee Mead, 42, of Raleigh, died Friday, May 21, 1999. She was employed with Tekelec as a Senior Technical Writer.
A memorial service will be held Monday 11:00 a.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home Millbrook Road.
Ms. Mead is survived by her mother, Barbara A. Mead of Barnegat, New Jersey; brother, Raymond E. Mead III of Belleville, New Jersey; aunts, Kay Johnson of Bridge City, Texas, Helen M. Konrad of Matthews, North Carolina and Evelyn L. MacNeil of Penny Farms, Florida, and her father, Raymond E. Mead, Jr. and his wife, Edith of Daytona Beach, Florida.
Melanie had a great zest for life and brought immense joy to everyone with her vivacious personality and sense of humor. We have all been blessed to have known her. She will surely be missed by all who knew and loved her.

LANGSTON HUGHES MORGAN JR.
RALEIGH - Langston Hughes Morgan Jr., 36, of Raleigh, N.C., died Thursday, May 19, 1999 in Rex Hospital.
Mr. Morgan was born in New York City on October 19, 1962, the son of Langston Hughes Morgan Sr. and the late Annie Mae Coleman Morgan.
Surviving besides his father, are two brothers, Edwin Morgan of Amityville, N.Y. and Bervis Morgan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two sisters, Vanessa Winbush of Bay Shore, N.Y. and Doris Snell of Amityville, N.Y.
Memorial services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 24, 1999 in the Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel on Glenwood Ave. by Father Tim O'Connor.
The family will receive friends following the service.

HELEN JEW ODOM
CLINTON - Mrs. Helen Jew Odom, of 6764 Hobbton Hwy, formerly of Burgaw, died in Sampson Regional Medical Center, Friday, May 21, 1999.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Keener United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Supplee officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She was a native of Onslow County, the daughter of the late Luther W. and Helen Brinson Horne. She was a member of Keener United Methodist Church and a retired school teacher.
Surviving: husband, William Wright "Bill" Odom of the home; daughter, Laura Helen Daughtry of Clinton, son-in-law, Tommy Daughtry of Clinton; grandson, Todd Daughtry of Clinton and his wife Sherrie; granddaughter, Tonya Daughtry of Clinton; sister, Loraine West of Suffolk, VA; three nephews; and one niece.
The family received friends on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

GLADYS H. PRIVETTE
YOUNGSVILLE - Gladys Hagwood Privette, 72, of 8349 Halifax Road, died Saturday, May 22, 1999 at Wake Medical Center. She was born in Vance County and was the daughter of the late Paul and Maggie Hagwood. She was married to Willie B. Privette Jr. who preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held at 8 o'clock, Sunday evening, May 23, 1999 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Jesse Parrish officiating. A private burial will be held on Monday.
Mrs. Privette is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Ginger Privette of Youngsville and Kenny and Gina Privette of Louisburg; sister, Elizabeth Potter of Md.; grandson, Joseph Privette.
The family will receive friends at Bright Funeral Home from 6-8 Sunday evening followed by the memorial service at 8 o'clock.
MARY H. REDD
RALEIGH - Mary Helen Redd, 39, died Friday, May 21, 1999. Ms. Redd was born in Wake County.
Surviving are her mother, Mazie H. Tant; children, Patricia Ann Norris, Bryan H. Redd, and Jessica Dawn Norris, all of Raleigh; brothers and sister, David N. Norris of Zebulon, Tracy Ann Potter of Henderson, and William T. Tant Sr. of Raleigh, and grandson, Tyler C. Norris.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday in Mitchell Funeral Home Chapel, with entombment following in Oakwood Mausoleum.

JOAN H. SALWAY
FLORENCE, S.C. - Joan Harlow Salway, 64, of 2318 McDonald Blvd., died Thursday May 20, 1999 at her residence after an extended illness.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday May 26, 1999 at Pisgah United Methodist Church, 621 N. Ebenezer Road. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
Mrs. Salway was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa. a daughter of the late Winton G. and Dorthea Jones Harlow. She was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, John A. Salway of Florence; two sons, Scott A. (Mindy) Salway of Tamarac, Fla., and Douglas J. (Ann) Salway of Greenwood, S.C.; one daughter, Sharon A. (Shay) Poston of Florence; twin-sister, Jane (John) Breen of Newtown Square, Pa.; one grandchild, Gabrielle Salway.
A committal service will be held 11 a.m. Friday May 28, 1999 in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Ardmore, Pa., directed by Chadwick-McKinney Funeral Home of Ardmore, Pa.

FOUR OAKS - Funeral services for Charles Leroy Ward will be held at 1 p.m. Monday from the chapel of Underwood Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Jesse A. Hathaway. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove Church Cemetery.

LELIA HOLT WILSON
RALEIGH - Lelia Jeanette Holt Wilson, 95, died Friday at Raleigh Rehabilitation and Convalescent Center.
A private funeral service will be held on Tuesday. Burial will be in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are her husband, Harold A. Wilson; daughters, Janice Lapp and her husband, Neil of Raleigh and Barbara J. Wilson of Washington, DC; sister, Lucille Kehoe and her husband Duane of Merrill, Michigan; grandchildren, Kevin D. Lapp of Raleigh and Amy M. Straughn and her husband, Thomas of Knightdale.

THOMAS M. COZART
EMERALD ISLE - Mr. Thomas Morris Cozart, 55, of 113 Tracy Drive, died on Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Cozart was born in Greenville, the son of Vivian Morris Cozart and the late William Carlton Cozart.
His brother, Bill Cozart of Oxford, preceded him in death. He graduated from Junius H. Rose High School, attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated from East Carolina University.
Mr. Cozart retired from IBM in December 1999 after 25 years of service. Mr. Cozart worked for Emerald Isle Realty as their managing broker for the last seven years. He was a member of the Carteret County Board of Realtors and was also a member of the Swansboro United Methodist Church. The Reverends Ray Broadwell and Allen Bingham will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 4, 1999 at Swansboro United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Greenville at Greenwood Cemetery at 4 p.m.
In addition to his mother, Morris is survived by his wife, Sara Oakley Cozart of the home; son, Thomas Morris Cozart Jr. of New York City, NY; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Cozart of Cary; mother-in-law, Carrie Gray Oakley of Greenville; sister-in-law, June Hall Cozart of Oxford; brother-in-law, and sister-in-law, Dr. Godfrey Porter Oakley and Mary Ann Bryant Oakley of Atlanta, Ga.; three nieces; two nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home in Swansboro and at other times in the home, 113 Tracy Drive, Emerald Isle, NC.
