GEORGINE MARIE MAXWELL
DURHAM - Georgine Marie Maxwell, 55, of Durham County, died Friday, April 16, 1999 at Lynn House of the Potomac Valley, Alexandria, VA. Mrs. Maxwell was born in Chicago, IL to the late James and Marie Green of LaGrange, IL. Mrs. Maxwell was a 1964 graduate of Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. After marriage in 1964 she taught elementary education before starting and raising a family beginning in 1969. She was a 26 year member, former Reader and board member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Downers Grove, IL. Since 1994 she has been a member and former First Reader of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Chapel Hill. Georgine was also a current active member of P.E.O. Chapter AE, Durham, NC.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 1999 at Walker's Funeral Home, 120 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested by the family in her name to: Lynn House of the Potomac Valley, Alexandria, VA or Habitat for Humanity International, Americus, GA 31709.
Surviving: husband, Gary a. Maxwell; sons, Timothy William Maxwell of Naperville, IL, Jonathan Robert Maxwell of Chicago, IL; brother, James C. Green and his family of LaGrange, IL; numerous other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an older brother, Howard.

ERNEST L. "ROY" AVERY
GREENVILLE - Mr. Ernest L. "Roy" Avery, 77, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post #39 for over 50 years and had served as Post Commander for 2 years and as Post Adjutant for 37 years and was recognized by the American Legion Department of N.C. as Adjutant of the Year in 1998. He was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church.
He is survived by: wife, Magaleen Corey Avery; son, Ernest L. Avery Jr. of Caswell County; daughter, Edna A. Merritt of Greenville; grandson, Blake Merritt; brother, Harry H. Avery of Winterville; sisters, Lucille A. Smith of Grimesland and Virginia Dare Pozek of Norfolk, Virginia.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Arrangements by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory, Greenville.
Members of the American Legion Post #39 will be honorary pallbearers.

ROBERT FRANKLIN BARNWELL
KINSTON - Robert Franklin Barnwell, 86, of 1600 Greenbriar Road, died Thursday at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. He was a retired Sales Broker with Old Mansion Inc., active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, former Elk and active member of the 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division.
Funeral service 3 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 1999 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Rev. Donald Weisner and Rev. William S. Brettmann officiating. Interment in the Columbarium at St. Mary's Episcopal Church.
Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie B. Carr and Robert Winston "Judge" Carr Jr. of Raleigh; three sisters, Hallie B. Burch of Prospect, Hill, Bertha B. Cobb of Yancyville, Nanny B. Horton of Rougemont.

ANNIE B. BEASLEY
WALLACE - Annie Belle Learned Beasley, 98, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville.
Mrs. Beasley was the widow of Wilbert Beasley and a longtime resident of Smithfield, NC. She taught school for many years in Johnston, Duplin and Pender Counties.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2, from the Padgett Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Burgaw Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Wallace United Methodist Church Building Fund, 303 South College Street, Wallace, NC 28466.

CLARA ALBRIGHT CAMP
PITTSBORO - Clara Albright Camp, 93, died Wednesday, April 27. She was born in Alamance County, on September 14, 1905 and was the daughter of Louvenia Pickard and James Samuel Albright. She attended Duke University where she received her teaching certificate, then graduated from Watts Hospital School of Nursing in 1933. She had been a resident of Pittsboro since 1936 when she and her husband, Dr. Horton Camp opened Chatham County's first hospital. Mrs. Camp was a active community volunteer. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Women of the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church. She was also a former Deacon of the church. She retired as a Public Health Nurse in 1970 and for many years following her retirement she continued her visits to the "old people" of Chatham County.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Joseph Horton Camp and her husband, Dr. Horton Camp.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by a son, Jim Camp and daughter-in-law, Susan Levis Camp of Hayes, Virginia; grandson, Mike and his wife, Rosemary of Traverse City, Michigan; grandson, Joe of Greenville; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made in her name to the Pittsboro Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
Arrangements are by Griffin Funeral Service.

MARY LUCINDA WILLIAMS CARR
DURHAM - Mary Lucinda Williams Carr, of 409 Watts Street, died Wednesday, April 28, at Durham Regional Hospital.
She was born in Wallace, NC, Duplin County, April 26, 1898, daughter of the late Eleanor Tommie Smith and the late Daniel Stokes Williams. She was educated at the elementary level at the Dellway Schools, Dellway, NC; high school level at Jones Sprunt Institute, Kenansville, NC; and college level at Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, NC, where she majored in music.
She married Dr. Henry C. Carr on July 10, 1917 and started married life as an Army wife at Camp Jackson, SC. After WWI, they moved to Durham where Dr. Carr started his dental practice.
Mrs. Carr has been a contributing matriarch of Durham for 82 years. She and Dr. Carr were one of the four couples who helped establish and found Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she was the church organist for 36 years. She held every office possible for the women of the church and was honored with a life membership in the women of the church.
She was a charter member of the Study Club, a local book club founded in 1923, and a member of the Little Red Hens organization, a member of the Durham Women's Club, and the Neighbor Club of Trinity Park. She was local and state president of the North Carolina Dental Auxiliary and was the North Carolina Mother of the Year.
Her 101 years of gracious and hospitable living was devoted to her family, friends, church, her Lord and the community at large. Her Christian influence knew no bounds and will live forever.
Surviving are two daughters, Eleanor Stokes Carr Boyd of Charlotte and Frances Sprunt Carr Parker of Kinston; son-in-law, Dr. Samuel L. Parker, Jr. of Kinston; grandchildren, Nancy Lucinda Parker of Charleston, SC, Henry Samuel Parker and wife Cecelia of Kinston, Frances Carr Parker Marlow and husband Andrew of Greenville, NC, Holly Eleanor Parker of Kinston, Harry M. Boyd, Jr. and wife Mary Ann of Cincinnati, OH, Robert Carr Boyd and wife Beth of Charlotte, Daniel Stokes Boyd and wife Mary of Charlotte, David Henry Boyd and wife Cindy of Spartanburg, SC; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Donovan Drake officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, Family of Faith Campaign, or the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are with Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

LOIS ADAMS TART ENNIS
FOUR OAKS - Lois Adams Tart Ennis, 76, of 1015 Hannah Creek Rd., died Thursday, April 29, 1999.
Funeral, 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 1999, Stones Creek Advent Christian Church with Rev. Doug Able and Rev. Mike Whitley officiating. Burial, Adam's Family Cemetery, Four Oaks.
Survivors: three daughters and sons-in-law, Edna Earle and Edward Earl (Tink) Sutton of Newton Grove, Edith and Willie Parker of Four Oaks, Bonnie and Norman Dunn of Four Oaks; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Pat Tart of Four Oaks, Keith and Joyce Tart of Four Oaks, Roger and Teresa Tart of Angier; one sister, Ferrell Browning of Wilmington; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ennis graduated from Meadow in 1941 as valedictorian and she was a member of Stones Creek Advent Christian Church.
The family will receive friends Friday, April 30, from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

ELFREDA E. MEAKER
PITTSBORO - Mrs. Elfreda Emma Meaker of Binghampton, New York, died Thursday at UNC Hospitals. She was 92. A native of Berlin, Germany, Mrs. Meaker was a long time resident of New York and had resided with her son in Pittsboro since December. Mrs. Meaker was a retired nurses aid at Binghampton State Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Meaker and a daughter, Barbara Georgia.
No funeral service is planned.
Surviving: son, Lee Meaker of Pittsboro; eight grandchildren and two who lives in North Carolina, Cindy Massey and Sue Sawyer; 14 great-grandchildren.
Walkers Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is in charge of arrangements.

MATTIE BELLE POWELL
DURHAM - Mattie Belle Powell, 84, of Durham, NC died April 29th, 1999. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 2nd at 3 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Durham, NC. Friends will be received by the family in the church parlor beginning at 2 p.m.
She was preceded in death by her husband Rufus Heflin Powell III.
She is survived by her daughters Martha Wilkins of Raleigh and Mago Powell of Atlanta and her grandchildren Christi Lushbaugh of Raleigh and Chad Wilkins of Winston-Salem.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Mattie Belle Powell Memorial Fund at 215 N. Church Street, Durham, NC 27701.

NAN L. ROBERSON
ROBERSONVILLE - Mrs. Nan Livesay Roberson, 72, died Thursday, April 29, 1999 at her home in Robersonville, NC.
The funeral service will be conducted, Saturday, May 1, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Robersonville Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Martin Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Roberson, a native of Rocky Mount, had lived all of her married life in Robersonville. She was a member of the Robersonville Methodist Church, and United Methodist Women. Her parents were the late John Ramey and Ethel Ellis Livesay of Rocky Mount.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Wallace Orlando Roberson, a brother, John Livesay of Newport News, VA and a sister, Virginia McKoy of Greenville, NC.
Surviving: two daughters, Sandra R. Everett and husband, Richard G. and Nan R. Taylor and husband Ronald of Greenville; one son, William Wallace Roberson and wife Kathy of Robersonville; two brothers, Rev. A.E. Livesay of Charlottesville, VA and Frank Livesay of Rocky Mount; one sister, Harriett Livesay of Wilson; five grandchildren, Matthew and Sara Everett of Greenville, Will and Martha Lynn Roberson of Robersonville and Casey Taylor of Greenville.
The family will receive friends at Biggs Funeral Home in Robersonville, Friday, April 30, 1999 from 7-8:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robersonville United Methodist Church.

THELMA MARY ROBINSON
CARY - Thelma Mary Robinson, 94, of 1404 Bloomindale Dr., Cary, died Thursday, April 29, 1999 in the Cary Health & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in and resided in Ossinging, New York, before moving to Cary in 1989. A private family graveside will be held 3 p.m. Friday, April 30, 1999 in the Apex Cemetery.
Apex Funeral Directors, 511 W. Williams St., Apex is entrusted with the arrangements.
Surviving: daughter, Carole A. Aickelin of Cary; granddaughters, Diana Aickelin of Raleigh, Lisa Williams of Garner; great-granddaughters, Crystal, Julia and Carter James, all of Garner; sister, Muriel Barrett of Sylmar, CA; brother, Norbert Jowitt of Ossining, NY; several nieces and nephews.

ELLEN JANE SMITH
NEW BERN - Ellen Jane Smith, 81, died Monday, April 26, 1999 at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. She was born April 28, 1917 in Washington, PA to W. Carl and Florence Wolfe Smith.
She is survived by her sister, Ann Sledge; brother-in-law, Lamar Sledge of New Bern; three nieces; one nephew; 10 grand-nieces and nephews.
Miss Smith graduated from Washington High School, Washington, PA, Muskingum College, Ohio, and received her masters degree from the University of Maryland. Her career included several years work at radio and television stations in five eastern and southern cities. She later taught English, speech, and drama in Montgomery County Public Schools, Maryland until retirement to Avon, NC. She resided in Raleigh NC for the last 14 years until moving to New Bern in January, 1999.
Arrangements are being handled by Pollock-Wells & Best Funeral Home.
Memorial services are being set for a later time.
Family will receive friends at the Sledge home, 104 Johnson Point Road, New Bern, NC.

RICHARD S. THORNBURG JR.
NEW BERN - Richard Scott Thornburg, Jr., 27, Senior Airman (Ret.) of the 21st Fighter Squadron ("Gamblers") Luke Air Force Base, Phoenix, Arizona, died at his home on April 27, 1999. He was a graduate of New Bern Senior High School; attended East Carolina University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau; attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 1 from 7-9 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church and a Memorial Service will also be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 2 at 2 p.m.
He is survived by his wife, Michael Suzanne Thornburg; his parents Richard Scott Thornburg, Sr. and Cindy Thornburg; two brothers, Joseph and Greg Thornburg; grandparents, Joe and Billie Mauney of Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, Suite 203, 1234 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, Illinois 60202-1375 or to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 811 Simmons Street, New Bern, North Carolina 28560.
