Gary Deane Smith, 47, of Lewisville died June 3 at his home. He worked for the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Vickey Lynn Shelby
Vickey Lynn Shelby, 54, died June 2 at Lexington Memorial Hospital. She was born January 4, 1950, in West Virginia, to the late Irene Eileen Naylor. She served as a nurse in the Navy and worked as a nurse’s assistant for 15 years at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. For the last 12 years, she worked as a convenience store clerk in Clemmons.
Surviving are Johnny Dale, Misty Dawn, Shawn Lewis Sr., Kristina LeAndra, Michael Eugene and Michelle Dawn Shelby; 10 grandchildren, Amanda Dawn, Gena Danielle, Jonathan, Douglas, Shambrody Lee, Cheyenne Irene, Shawn Lewis Jr., Michael David, Michael Austin, Sarah Kay and Jayson Dakota Shelby; and a sister, Mary Kay McConkey.
A memorial service was held at the Lewisville Civic Center.
Betty Kimball Charles
Betty Kimball Charles, 79, of Winston-Salem died June 12 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born April 8, 1925, in Forsyth County to the late Raymond and Lena Langley Kimball. She was a member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Z.J. Charles Sr. of the home; a daughter, Pam Charles Hill of Clemmons; two sons, Mike Charles and wife Lois and Z.J. Charles Jr. and wife Bonnie, all of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Nancy Fulk of Sparta and Mildred Wyhlidko of Southport; and two brothers, Jim Kimball of Madison and Bill Kimball of Summerset, N.J.
A private service was held at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Carroll Tifft
Carroll Tifft, 86, of Clemmons died April 30. He had retired from the Ford Motor Corp. after 45 years of service. He was a founding member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons.
Surviving are two daughters, Julie Tifft Pais and husband G. Michael Pais of Locust Grove and Joyce Sheridan and husband Stan Sheridan of Williamsburg, Mich.; three grandsons, David, Marc and John Sheridan; a granddaughter, Louise Enszer Vozniak and husband Gregory; a great-grandson, Jack Sheridan; and a great-granddaughter, Veronica Vozniak.
A memorial Mass was at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Buttner officiating.
Janie Lou Williams Chipman
Janie Lou Williams Chipman, 49, of Winston-Salem died June 10. She was born August 20, 1954, in Bethania to Peggy Ritchey Williams and the late Carlos Clifford Williams Sr. She enjoyed flower gardening and painting. She was active in her church as long as her health permitted. She was a loving wife, mother and friend.
Surviving are her husband, Barry Lynn Chipman of the home in Rural Hall; her sons, Brandon David Hill of Winston-Salem and Thomas Ryan Chipman and wife Jaime of Gastonia; her brothers, Carlos Clifford Williams and wife Salem of King and Joseph R. Williams of Winston-Salem; several nieces and a nephew; special aunts and uncles, Ginger and John Reid of Clemmons, Betty and Boyce Royal of Winston-Salem and Kenneth Williams; her grandmother, Louise Kates Ritchey of Winston-Salem; and her in-laws, Cathy and Don Jones of Kernersville and Geri and Thomas Chipman of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Bethania Moravian Graveyard with Rev. Wayne Byerly officiating.
Charles Erastus Seats
Charles Erastus Seats, 86, of Clemmons died June 12 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born September 6, 1917, in Davie County to Phillip T. and Amanda West Seats. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army, and he received a Purple Heart. He was a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church and a life member of Clemmons VFW Post 9010. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola Jones Seats; three brothers; and four sisters.
Surviving are his wife, Cleo Hauser Seats of the home; a daughter, Edna Rose Rainwater of Riverdale, Ga.; two grandchildren, Cary and Kelly; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, and burial followed at Union Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Ruth Marion Wishon Miller
Ruth Marion Wishon Miller, 85, of Yadkinville died June 13 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born November 19, 1918, in Yadkin County to Ike and Ada Wilkins Wishon. She was a homemaker and a member of Turners Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gurney H. Miller; a daughter, Frances Miller; and a brother, Elbert Wishon.
Surviving are a daughter, Violet Marlowe and husband Floyd of Yadkinville; a son, Roy Miller and wife Brenda of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Diane Powell and Roger Miller; a great-grandchild, Brad Powell; two sisters, Marie Carter and Virginia Wishon; and two brothers, Jack Wishon and Pete Wishon, all of Yadkinville.
Funeral services were held at Gentry Family Chapel in Yadkinville with Rev. Marvin Blackburn officiating, and burial followed in Turners Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Jessie Mae Steelman Pruitt
Jessie Mae Steelman Pruitt, 90, of Yadkinville died June 12 peacefully in her sleep at home. She was born April 15, 1914, in Yadkin County at Footville in the historic Laugenour House (Old Brick House) to the late William Boone and Pearl Renegar Steelman. She retired from Duplan Corp. in 1975. She was a lifelong and faithful member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church. She was a past member of Lone Hickory Extension Homemakers Club. She loved to quilt and was a good neighbor who will be missed in church and in the community. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Sherman Vestal Pruitt, on September 5, 1989; a grandson, Jeffrey Hollar; three sisters, Cora Lee Steelman, Bernice Stewart and Ruth Sapp; and a brother, W. B. Steelman Jr.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara P. Knouse and husband Melvin of Lewisville and Glenda P. Hollar and husband Cleve; two sons, Boyd Pruitt and wife Janet and Bill Pruitt and wife Robyn, all of Yadkinville; eight grandsons, Blake and Sherman Hollar, Arliss and Greg Knouse and Timothy, Matthew, James and Brook Pruitt; five great-grandchildren, Bridgette, Andy and Kaitlyn Hollar and Carson Pruitt and Tucker Knouse; a sister, Jewel S. Hull of Winston-Salem; a brother, Daniel Boone Steelman of Yadkinville; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Steelman of Yadkinville and Esther Pruitt of King.
Funeral services were held at Sandy Springs Baptist Church with Rev. David Kiser officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Charles William Hole
Charles William Hole, 75, died June 12 at Arbor Acres Retirement Community. He was born August 11, 1928, in Whitten, S.D., to Lloyd E. and Lillian Flint Hole. He attended a one-room school for eight years as the only member of his class. From 1950 to 1953, he was a missionary for United Methodist Church in the countries of Angelo and the Congo, where he audited books for existing hospitals and schools along with doing youth work. Upon his return to the U.S., he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He met his wife, a Methodist missionary, in Mexico, and they were married September 16, 1956. He was employed by Western Electric Co., and retired in 1987 after more than thirty years of service. He was well-known in the Pfafftown community for his vegetable garden and fruit trees. He did extensive volunteer work for SHIIP (State Health Insurance Information Program) and AARP, and also prepared income taxes for the elderly. He took classes in Spanish and line dancing at the Shepherd’s Center. He was a member of Vienna Civic Club and on the board of Vienna Fire Dept. He was a tutor at Old Town Global Academy, chairperson for the State Vocational Guidance Program and a resource person for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. In addition, he was a member of Burkhead United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and performed in the bell choir. Also, he was a certified lay speaker, and he served as church lay leader. Throughout his years at the church, he served at some time on every committee and was also church treasurer. At the conference level, he served on work teams to Costa Rica and Ecuador and on the Conference Board of Missions, and he was chairperson of the U.S. Steering Committee for Denega Trade School in Africa.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Lewis Hole of Arbor Acres; a daughter, Mitzi Lynn Hole; a son-in-law, Michael Stallings of Apex; and a sister, Midge Carlson of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral services were held at Burkhead United Methodist Church with Rev. Kathie Sherrill officiating. A private graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park Cemetery.
David Wilson Kesler III
David Wilson Kesler III, 24, of Welcome died September 29 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Surviving are his parents, David W. Kesler and Barbara Campbell Kesler of the home; sisters Kathy Arledge and husband Robert of Greensboro and Susan Frank and husband Josh of Clemmons; and two nieces.
Funeral services were held at Center United Methodist Church in Welcome with Rev. Clay Morgan officiating.
Annie Mae H. Wilson
Annie Mae H. Wilson, 79, of Pfafftown died September 28 at her residence. She was born October 16, 1924, in Lewisville to John William and Minnie Dull Hutchens. She worked for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Trivette’s Auto Supply for 26 years and NCNB for five years until her retirement. She was of the Lutheran faith and a lifelong member of Shiloh Lutheran Church of Lewisville. She was active in her community and church and loved the “Goodtimes” members group and the fellowship associated with sharing her love and caring with her friends. She was preceded in death by her lifelong husband, Marvin T. Wilson.
Surviving are her sister-in-law, Opal W. Lewis and husband Roy of Winston-Salem; and a nephew, Graham L. Lewis and wife Kimberly and their daughters, Kayla and Danielle of Lexington. She is also survived by her “children,” Tim and Roberta Lasley with Jim and Paul as special “grandchildren.” She never had any children of her own but took special care of the Lasleys. Also surviving are her close friends, Mary Mann of Lewisville and Marjean McMillan of Pfafftown, who were as close as sisters to her.
Funeral services were held at Shiloh Lutheran Church with Rev. William James Andrews officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Vera Hairston Baten
Vera Hairston Baten, 60, of Greensboro died September 26 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 31, 1944 in Winston-Salem. She was retired from the Employment Security Commission in Greensboro, where she was a member of the State Employee Association of N.C. She was a member of Genesis Baptist Church in Greensboro. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ida B. Hairston; two sisters, Eleanor H. Foye and Doris H. Landingham; and two brothers, Haywood B. Hairston and Harold “Happy” Hairston.
Surviving are her daughter, Stephanie B. Campbell of Charlotte; a sister, Sharon H. Miller of Clemmons; a grandson, Maxwell Campbell of Charlotte; a nephew, Reginald M. Scarborough Jr.; a niece, Marjorie S. Breazeale of Clemmons; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held at Genesis Baptist Church in Greensboro.
Carl Henry Goslen
Carl Henry Goslen, 82, of Pfafftown died September 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born January 17, 1922, in Forsyth County to Charlie Hauser Goslen and Mabel Pfaff Goslen. He farmed with his dad until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945. He was a rural letter carrier, retiring in the early 1990s after 25 years of service. He was a member of Pfafftown Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and active in the Christian Men’s Fellowship. He was a member of the Vienna Civic Club and enjoyed working the food booth the club sponsored at the Dixie Classic Fair. He was also a past volunteer for the Vienna Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Leazer Goslen of the home; a son, Jesse Samuel Goslen of Raleigh; a daughter, Cathy J. Riddleberger of Covington, Va.; a brother, William B. Goslen and wife Norma of Winston-Salem; a sister, Evelyn Nifong and husband Jake of Pfafftown; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Pfafftown Christian Church with Rev. Dr. Tom Everton officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ann Marie Andrews Stepp
Ann Marie Andrews Stepp, 65, of Pfafftown, formerly of Hendersonville, died September 26 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late Lewis L. Andrews and Lilly Ann Crawford Andrews. She was the first woman to have open-heart surgery at Baptist Hospital in 1961. She was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Angela Stepp McFadyen of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Ashley Lauren Stepp McFadyen, a senior at Appalachian State University and Laura Katherine Stepp McFadyen of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jessie James Andrews and wife Lenora of Hendersonville; two sisters, Shirley Andrews Corn of Asheville and Jean Andrews Durham and husband C.L. of Coppers Cove, Texas; nieces and nephews Mark and Nicole Andrews and Debbie, Sherry and Denise Durham; former husband and best friend Anthony J. Stepp; and her cat, Sophie.
Funeral services were held at Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel, and burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
John Robert Petree
John Robert Petree, 71, of Clemmons died September 29 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 2, 1933, in Winston-Salem to Samuel Lindsey and Vivian Leigh Petree. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 25 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Petree; two children, Ed Petree of the home and Elaine Petree of Elon College; two sisters, Linda Kolb and husband George of Oakton, Va., and Diane Payne and husband Mike of Mount Airy; two sisters-in-law and husbands, Adelaide and George Hamilton IV of Franklin, Tenn., and Nancy and Rob Nance of High Point; nephews and nieces Robert Kolb and wife Debra of Friendwoods, Texas, Peyton Hamilton and wife Anne of Fort Mill, S.C., George Hamilton VI and wife Lillian of Franklin, Tenn., Robert Nance III and wife Sally of High Point, Mary Arcure and husband Doug of Charlotte, Paige McGlaughlin and husband Stewart of High Point and Pattie Nance of Asheboro; and his two dogs, Simba and Sissy.
A memorial graveside service was held in God’s Acre.
Leona B. Loveless Plyler
Leona B. Loveless Plyler, 95, died September 29 in Clemmons. She was formerly of Clemmons Village. She was preceded in death by a son, Calvert L. Loveless.
Surviving are her son, Walter Loveless and wife Mary of Clemmons; two daughters, Marlene Dunn and husband Carl of Sturgeon, MO, and Sue Sossamon of Kannapolis; her daughter-in-law, Betty Loveless of Harrison, TN; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchldren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Wolfe Funeral Home in Fort Mill, SC.
Pearl Bowman Snyder
Pearl Bowman Snyder, 94, formerly of East Bend died September 30 at Village Care of King. She was born in Yadkin County on February 9, 1910, to the late Sylvester Francis Bowman and Sarah Rebecca Joyner. She was the widow of Robah L. Snyder Jr., who preceded her in death on June 2, 1976. She was the oldest member of New Hope United Methodist Church, where she faithfully attended as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Senior Citizens Club. In addition she was a 50-year member of the N.C. Home Extention Club and a charter member of Friends of the Library of East Bend.
Surviving are a son, Leonard Snyder III and wife Mary of Clemmons; a daughter, Sarah “Susie” Snyder Clodfelter of Pfafftown; and two grandchildren, David Lee Clodfelter and wife Ginger of East Bend and Elizabeth Lynn Brannin and husband Michael of Richmond, Va.
Funeral services were held at New Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Currie and Rev. Nancy Johnson officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ruth Hartley Brown
Ruth Hartley Brown, 83, died September 30 at the home of her son in Summerville, SC. She was born January 14, 1921, in Forsyth County to Henry Albert and Mary Duggins Hartley. She was retired from Hanes Hosiery and enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Tommy Lee Johnson and wife Shirley of Summerville and Irvin Albert Johnson of Clemmons; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel.
Verta Perryman Martin
Verta Perryman Martin, 88, of High Point died October 1 at Westchester Manor. Born September 3, 1916, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of Montava and Laura Carmichael Perryman. She was a member of Central Alliance Church, where she worked with the youth and served on various committees. She was a former member of the Dogwood Flower Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Allen Martin, on May 20, 2001.
Surviving are four children, Kenneth Martin Sr. and wife Kay of High Point, Joyce Howard and husband Kenneth of High Point, Brenda Kennedy and husband Robert Kennedy Jr. of Winston-Salem and Judy Knopf and husband Timothy of Clemmons; a brother, Arvel Perryman of High Point; a sister, Hazel Smith of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
A graveside service was held in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery in Thomasville with Rev. Jeffrey Palmer officiating.
Mary Lou Craver
Mary Lou Craver, 65, of Clemmons died November 23 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. She was born December 3, 1938, in Davidson County to the late Harold David Craver and Viola James Craver of the Arcadia community. She was a former teacher and a principal of the Forsyth County school system for 33 years, after which she became the volunteer/curriculum coordinator of the Children’s Center in Winston-Salem. She retired from this in 2000 to care for her mother during her illness. She was a member of Arcadia Methodist Church. She loved going to the beach and shagging and was a member of the Winston-Salem Shag Club. She was preceded in death by her brother, Garry Craver.
Surviving are brothers David Craver of Lexington and Larry Craver and wife Lenell of Winston-Salem; nieces LuAnn Hartley and husband Charles, Sandra Hedrick and husband Rex, Michelle Perrell and husband Mickey and Karen Phillips and husband Doug; nephew and godson Kevin Craver; several great-nieces and great-nephews; a special friend, Barry Rudd of Winston-Salem; a dear cousin, Bonnie Swicegood and husband Ken of Lexington; and her beloved cats, Sam and Gray.
Funeral services were held at Arcadia United Methodist Church in Clemmons with Rev. Dianne Marsden and Rev. Hal Varner officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Jess Rudolph Grayson
Jess Rudolph Grayson, 86, of Pfafftown died at his home November 25. He was born in Philadelphia, PA, on September 13, 1918, to Jess and Sarah Engle Grayson. He retired to North Carolina in 1983. He was a skilled welder, having several pieces of his work displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. He was active in life until the day of his passing.
Surviving are four sons, Michael, Philip and William, all of Virginia, and John Grayson of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Mary Jane Whelan of Pennsylvania and Liz Westerberg of Pfafftown; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Marcus Porter officiating.
