12-29-23 DIED 3-10-99
RALEIGH - Claude P. Smith, 75, of Cary, died Wednesday. He was born in Guilford County to Runa Swain and Mary Lula Smith.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Cary. Burial will follow immediately after the service in Montlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends in the church narthex from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. before the funeral service.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie Coston Smith; children, Angela S. Vess and husband, David and Ronald L. Smith and wife, Mary; brother, Fred Sigmon Smith and sister, Laurie Smith Cooper; grandchildren, Krista Smith, Jennifer Smith, Lee Smith, Shaun Smith and David Vess Jr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Runa S. and Mary Lula Smith; brother, William Doyle Smith and son, William Michael Smith; sister, Sue S. Baynes.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 117 S. Academy Street, Cary, N.C. 27511; or to the Alzheimer's Disease Association, Eastern NC Chapter, 400 Oberlin Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.

REV. LINWOOD E. BLACKBURN
WILSON - Rev. Linwood E. Blackburn, 84, died Wednesday.
He was a retired Methodist minister and missionary.
Funeral, Friday 2 p.m., First United Methodist Church. Interment, Maple Cemetery.
Surviving: daughters, Claudia "Tootie" Griffin of Lewiston-Woodville and Jan Massey of West Palm Beach Florida; sons, William "Billy" Blackburn of Raleigh and Linwood E. Blackburn Jr., of Franktown, CO; sisters, Rosa Mae McDonald and Mary Lou Wade of Fayetteville; six grandchildren.
The family will be at Thomas-Yelverton, Thursday, 7-8:30 p.m.

SHELTON JUAN CHESSON JR.
JAN. 5, 1967 - MARCH 8, 1999
ROCKY MOUNT - Shelton Juan Chesson, Jr. lived a life of love and laughter for 32 years. He was adored by his family and friends for his cheerful enthusiasm, competitive spirit, genuine kindness, contagious humor and good will. His passion for sports and his concern for people led him to a happy, satisfying career in teaching and coaching where he endeared himself to students, teachers, and fellow coaches.
A native of Rocky Mount, Juan grew up in his own backyard playing whiffle ball, basketball, and football with his brother and friends. He began his coaching career at an early age as he assisted his father during hundreds of high school football, basketball and baseball games. In his childhood, he reveled in his tasks as ball boy, bat boy, and equipment manager.
An outstanding student at Rocky Mount Senior High, he participated in football and baseball and was honored several times for his sportsmanship. He also played American Legion Baseball.
He graduated from NC State University in 1989 with a B.S. Degree in Mathematics. In 1990 he received a Master's Degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University where he was awarded the Monte Woods Memorial Scholarship for exceptional contributions to the program. He then served as an administrative assistant in the Department of Athletics at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Juan became a teaching assistant at NC State in 1992 and was awarded the Math Department's Maultbie Award in recognition of outstanding teaching. He received a Master's Degree in Mathematics Education from NC State in 1994.
He began teaching high school mathematics at Reynolds High School in 1994 and was honored as an outstanding first-year teacher by the Buncombe County Schools. He then transferred to T.C. Roberson High School where he taught for the past three years, coached Junior Varsity Football and served as Assistant Coach for Varsity Baseball.
A private burial service, arranged by Groce Funeral Home of Skyland, will be conducted Friday, March 12, 2:30 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church Cemetery in Fletcher. A public memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at Arden Presbyterian Church in Arden where Juan, an active church member, served as a deacon. Playing basketball in the church gym was one of his favorite pastimes.
Cherishing his life and love are his wife, Kristen Chesson of Fletcher, with daughter, Catherine Grace, to be born in May; his parents, Lela and Shelton Chesson of Rocky Mount; his brother, Harrell Chesson, Ph.D., of Atlanta, GA; and his grandmother, Frances Harrell of Williamston.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Juan Chesson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Buncombe County Schools Foundation, c/o Barbara Gardner, 175 Bingham Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

RUTH WHITE COURTNEY
RALEIGH - Mrs. Ruth White Courtney, 95, of Raleigh, NC, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999 at Rex Hospital.
Mrs. Courtney was born in Alamance Co., NC on October 21, 1903, the daughter of the late Harry Philip and Beulah Burton Hurdle White.
Surviving are one son, Charles Malcolm Cowdery and wife, Cecile of Seattle, WA; one daughter, Phyllis Womble and husband, George of Raleigh, NC; one sister, Virginia Lewis of Virginia Beach, VA; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held at the Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mebane, NC by Rev. Curtis Fussell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association of NC, 800 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605.

ESTHER SOLES FLOYD
RALEIGH - Esther Soles Floyd, formerly of Nichols, SC, died Wednesday morning in a Raleigh, NC hospital. Graveside funeral services will be Friday morning at 11 a.m. in Riverside Cemetery in Nichols. Rev. John Wallace will officiate.
The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. till 10:45 a.m. Friday at Meares Funeral Home in Mullins.
Mrs. Floyd was born in Horry County a daughter of the late McDuffie and Ida Mae Elliott Soles. She was a homemaker. A member of Nichols First Baptist Church and was a former employee of Smith's Florist in Mullins.
Surviving is a daughter, Grace Small of Raleigh, NC; a son-in-law; John E. Small of Raleigh, NC; grandson, Greg Small of Raleigh, NC; two granddaughters; Nancy Bane of Nichols and Cherri Goldstein of Jacksonville, FL; three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband; Jessie H. Floyd and a daughter; Dot Floyd Grainger.
Meares Funeral Home of Mullins is in charge.

CHARLES M. GOOCH
Sept. 1, 1924 - March 9, 1999
WENDELL - Charles Milton Gooch, 74, of 316 Wall St., died Tuesday night at Wake Med.
Graveside service 1 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
Surviving: former wife, Janie Perry Gooch; daughters, Sue Perry of Raleigh and Terri Burbank of Clayton; sons, Charles Gooch Jr. of Mebane, Larry Gooch and Billy Gooch, both of Garner; sisters, Mabel Bass of Wendell and Hattie Kitchen of Wake Forest; brother, Gattis Gooch of Wendell; 12 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Strickland Funeral Home, Wendell.

OLGA BREEDEN HORTON
RALEIGH - Olga Breeden Horton, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at Rex Convalescent Center at the age of 81.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, F. Tyron Horton; two sons, Robert M. Horton and wife, Gayle of Raleigh, Frederick T. Horton Jr. and wife, Ginger of Nashville, TN; three grandchildren, Hampton G. Horton of Raleigh, Angela H. Horton of Allamuchy, NJ; Frederick T. Horton III of Fairfax, VA; two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Elizabeth Leigh Horton.
The family will receive friends at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 1999.
Graveside service will be Friday, March 12, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Raleigh Memorial Park, with the Rev. George Johnson officiating.

FRANCES VIRGINIA IRONS
CHAPEL HILL - Frances Virginia Irons, 85, died Monday, March 8, 1999. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday at Corinth United Methodist Church. Rev. Preston Hunter officiating. Burial, church cemetery.
Surviving: son, Harold Gene Irons and daughter-in-law, Nanda Wheeless Irons of Raleigh; two sisters; Mrs. Louise Insco Partin of Wycoff, NJ, Mrs. Hazel Insco Pitt Bobbitt of Richmond, VA; two grandchildren, Amanda Frances Irons of Raleigh, Erin Elizabeth Irons of Raleigh.
She was a veteran of WWII where she served in the Mediterranean area including North Africa as an Army dietitian on several hospital ships. She was honorably discharged in 1945 as a First Lieutenant. She is a member of the women's war memorial in Washington, DC.
Mrs. Irons received her Bachelor's degree from Women's College in Greensboro, her Clinical Dietitic Internship from Duke University and her Master's degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Mr. Irons was a professor of home economics at Queens College in Charlotte and Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. She finished her career at Appalachian State University in Boone, where she received the honor of Emeritus Professor.
She was born May 3, 1913 to the late Howard Allen Insco and Sarah Ann Hardy Insco.
Memorial donations may be made to Triangle Hospice Inc., 1804 Martin Luther King Pkwy, Suite 112, Durham, NC 27707.
Family will receive friends 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Friday at Blaylock Funeral Home, Littleton, NC, 109 Johnston St.

RUBY N. KEITH
RALEIGH - Ruby Nowell Keith, 88, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999.
Mrs. Keith was born in Wake County to the late Claude Melvin and Mary Ann Richardson Nowell.
Her husband, Earl Kenneth Keith; son, Earl Hillman Keith; daughter-in-law, Barbara Dean Keith and granddaughter, Rebecca Keith Ledford all preceded her in death.
Graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday in the Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are two granddaughters, Brenda Honeycutt and husband, Robert of Raleigh and Donna Keith of Emerald Isle; grandson, Earl H. Keith Jr., and wife, Mary Margaret of Kinston, and four great-granddaughters, Katie, Mary Rebecca and Anna Marie Keith of Kinston, and Barbara Dean Honeycutt of Raleigh.
in lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to charity of ones choice.

RALEIGH - Mr. Willie "Bill" Mangum, 75, of Hillhaven Rehabilitation Health Care Center, 1616 Wade Avenue, formerly of 208 South East Raleigh died Saturday. Funeral will be 2 p.m Friday at Seagraves Funeral Home. Burial, Mt. Hope Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 550 East Martin St., Raleigh.
Visitation, 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

FAYETTEVILLE - Annie Mae Peterson, 84, of 908 Carver St., Fayetteville, NC, died Monday, March 8, 1999 at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
Funeral services 1 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at Smith Temple Church of God in Christ with Elder T. C. Leak and Bishop Leroy Woolard officiating. Burial at Northside Cemetery.
Survivors: a son, J. Vernon Peterson of Cary, NC; James Ingram of the home, Leon Melvin, Bessie Bates, Betty Kornegay, Wanda Gail Melvin, Vanita Boykin, and Alonzo Melvin all of Fayetteville, and Evelyn Pierce of Newport News, VA.
Viewing will be held on Friday, March 12, 1999, from 1-8 p.m. at Wiseman Mortuary in Fayetteville, NC. The family will receive friends at the home, 908 Carver St.

WILLIAM EDWARD PETERSON
NOV. 10, 1928 - MAR. 8, 1999
RALEIGH - William Edward Peterson, 70, of 706 Gentle Spring Court, died Monday.
Graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving: wife, Virginia A. Peterson; daughters, Dorothy Ray Stouffer and her husband, Chip, Susan Gilkeson and her husband, Guy, and Billie Ann Dunken, all of Oklahoma, Patricia Ann Bowen of Covington, Ga.; stepdaughter, Nancy Ellen Hinkle of Flowery Branch, Ga.; sons, William F. Peterson of Atlanta, Ga., and Shawn A. Peterson of Scottsburg, IN; stepson, Charles Ray Hinkle of Decatur, Ga.; sisters, Marisa Grunlund of Republic, MI, and Janet Porter of Wheeling, WV; brother, Francis Paul Peterson of Texas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation from 7-9 p.m. today, Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
