Peggy Ann Hollar Fletcher
Peggy Ann Hollar Fletcher, 60, of Pfafftown died September 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born February 13, 1943, in Boone to Fred Hollar and Ruth Payne Hollar. She was an active member of Pfafftown Christian Church for 40 years.
Surviving are her husband, Gerald Fletcher; their two children, Jill Fletcher Nelson and husband Kevin Alan Fletcher and wife Debbie; her brother and sisters, Jerry Hollar and wife Joan of Colfax, Sharon Yokeley of Winston-Salem and Phyllis Nelson and husband Jim of Pfafftown; five grandchildren, Holly and Adam Neely, Travis Nelson and Brad and Erika Fletcher; a family friend, Tim Shoaf; and a number of nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.
Funeral services were held at Pfafftown Christian Church with Dr. Tom Everton officiating, and burial followed in Pfafftown Cemetery.
Charles Brent Legg
Charles Brent Legg, 41, of Lexington died September 22. He was born August 24, 1962, in Montgomery, W.Va., to Charles E. and Dorothy Dickerson Legg. He served four years in the U.S. Army. He was an avid model railroader and was accomplished in tai chi, working toward his black belt. He loved history and participated in Civil War re-enactments. He was employed with Piedmont Sheet Metal Co. and was a member of Pinedale Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Lisa Mathis Legg, and a son, Afton Legg, of the home; his mother and father of Scott Depot, W.Va.; a sister, Terri Annette James and husband Jeff of St. Albans, W.Va.; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray and Geneva Mathis of Winston-Salem; his sisters-in-law, Gina Miller and husband Mike and Julie Tompson and fiance John, all of Winston-Salem; his brothers-in-law, Jerry Mathis and wife Myra of Clemmons and Dale Mathis and wife Wanda of Lexington; his nephews, Evan Miller and David Baxley; and his nieces, Lindsey James, Erica Miller, Taylor Mathis, Megan Baxley and Peyton and Pressley Thompson.
Funeral services were held at Pinedale Christian Church with Bill McKenzie, Bob McCaskill and Jerry Mathis officiating, and burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Thomas Roy Williams Jr.
Thomas “Tommy” Roy Williams Jr., 63, of Winston-Salem died October 3 at his home. He was born June 8, 1940, in Forsyth County to Thomas Roy Williams Sr. and Lillian Chilton Williams. He attended Gospel Chapel.
Surviving are two sisters, Nancy W. Flynt and husband Joe of Clemmons and Linda W. Wood and husband Wayne of Lexington; and three nephews, Christopher Daniel Wall of King, Gregory Wood of Winston-Salem and Keith Wood of Kernersville.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Fred Wood officiating, and entombment followed at Parklawn Memorial Park.
William Shuford Bright
William Shuford Bright, 74, of Pfafftown died September 29 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 25, 1929, in Iredell County to William Vick and Martha Shuford Bright. He was retired from AT&T/Lucent as a technical writer with 32 years of service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the Sports Car Club of America, Z Club, the National Space Society, and the Planetary Society. He was interested in photography, theatre, electronics and auto mechanics. He was a supporter of Friends Center at Guilford College, the Greensboro Concert Band and the Salvation Army and was an active member and supporter of Winston-Salem Friends Meeting. His parents and a son, William Joseph, preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife of almost 50 years, Patricia Cash Bright; a daughter, Susan Hunt and husband Bill; and two sons, George Byron and John Louise Bright.
A memorial service was held at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting.
Ray William Shouse
Ray William Shouse, 96, of Winston-Salem, died September 29. He was born September 6, 1907, to William Jefferson and Mollie Lineback Shouse in Winston-Salem. He was an active member of Beck’s Baptist Church as long as his health permitted. He was a member of Old Town Civic Club, and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 46 years service. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Shouse, on June 28, 1998.
Surviving are a son, Larry R. Shouse of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Lucille Gaultney of Clemmons and Louise Dillworth and husband Pat of Winston-Salem.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with Dr. Karl Minor and Dr. Ray Hamilton officiating, and burial followed at Beck’s Baptist Church.
Laura Lee Livengood Griffith
Laura Lee Livengood Griffith, 78, of Winston-Salem died March 4 after undergoing surgery at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County on December 29, 1925, to the late Charlie William and Rosser Faircloth Livengood. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and was a retired beautician.
Surviving are her daughter, Deamie Griffith Younce and husband Richard of King; two grandchildren, Christopher Carter of Lewisville and Kimberly Carter Gray and husband Charles of King; two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Bradley Gray of King; a sister, Lucy Livengood Burke and husband T. Wake Burke of Lewisville; and a nephew, Tony Burke and wife Vanessa of Winston-Salem.
A graveside service was held at Forsyth Memorial Park with Elder Joe McCollum and Elder Rickey McCollum officiating.
DeWalden A. Briggs
DeWalden A. Briggs, 88, of Rural Hall died March 6. He was born February 1, 1916, in Forsyth County to Robert Alexander and Jettie Blanch Long Briggs. He retired from Duplan in Winston-Salem after 45 years of service and had later worked with Forsyth County as a courier. After retirement he spent much of his time gardening and growing flowers. He and his wife, Alice, enjoyed attending the farmers market in Winston-Salem. He was a devoted member of Jefferson Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Briggs Booze.
Surviving are his wife, Alice Spainhour Briggs of the home; two daughters, Patsy Morgan of Lewisville and Dee Ann Goforth and husband John of Spartanburg, S.C.; six grandchildren, Harold Thomas Elliott Jr., Kim Elliott Gleason and husband Ronnie, Amy Elliott Whaley and husband Ashley, Christy Morgan Howell, Ginger Goforth Tennant and husband Josh and Katy Goforth Eaton and husband Alex; 10 great-grandchildren; several special additional great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy B. Hauser of Tobaccoville and Rosa B. Alspaugh and husband Eben of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Jefferson Church of Christ with Jerry Simpkins and Glenn VanMeter, ministers, officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Wilma Lee Lowery Boan
Wilma Lee Lowery Boan, 84, of Statesville died March 6 at Meadowbrook Terrace in Advance following a period of declining health. She was born September 28, 1919, in Iredell County, and was the daughter of the late R.A. Lowery Sr. and Etta Carter Lowery. On September 21, 1941, she married Clyde Nolton Boan Sr., who died June 25, 1983. She formerly worked for the Iredell County Register of Deeds and J.C. Penney Warehouse. In later years, she was associated with her husband in Boan Building Supply and Boan Trucking. She was a member of Northview Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday school for over 25 years. She grew up with her family at Abilene Church of Christ and had been a member of the Oakdale Women’s Club. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Carl E. Boan; a brother, R.A. “Jack” Lowery Jr.; and two sisters, Julia L. Haithcox and Catherine L. Lanier.
Surviving are two sons, C. Nolton Boan Jr. and wife Coletta of Winston-Salem and T. Gerald Boan and wife Kay of Statesville; a daughter, Priscilla B. Holland and husband Max of Sylva; six sisters, Martha L. Dellinger of Statesville, Louise L. Isenhour of Statesville, Pauline L. Ballard of Clemmons, Mary L. Sherrill of Statesville, and Sarah L. Pilcher and Elizabeth L. Hoots, both of Farmington; seven grandchildren, Max Holland Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of Houston, Texas, Lee Ann Gibson and husband, Dan, of Sylva, William “Bill” Boan of Statesville, Rebecca Boan of Cornelius, Meg Boan Johnston and husband Brian of Mooresville, T. Keith Boan and wife Kris of Statesville and Heather B. White and husband Rich of Statesville; two stepgrandsons, Andrew Childers of New York and Tad Royster of Raleigh; and six great-grandchildren, Brady M. White, Trent M. White, Bailey M. Boan, Brooke M. Boan, Beck M. Boan and Briley M. Boan.
Funeral services were held at Abilene Church of Christ with Dan Waller, Minister, and Jim Smith officiating, and burial followed in the Abilene Church of Christ Cemetery.
Virgie Mae Caudle
Virgie Mae Caudle, 95, of Winston-Salem died March 7 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 7, 1908, in South Carolina. She was preceded in death was a son, Bobby Lee Caudle.
Surviving are her son, Donald “Mack” Caudle and wife Frances of Lewisville; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Caudle of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. John D. Moxley officiating, and burial follow in Union Cross Friends Meeting Cemetery.
Pearl Gough Williams
Pearl Gough Williams Middleton, 85, of Winston-Salem died March 8 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born May 15, 1918, in Yadkin County to James Calvin Gough and Rose Ella Martin Gough. She was a lifetime member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, a volunteer for Crisis Control Ministry for 17 years and a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club of America. She especially loved her flowers and cooking. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Robert Williams; her second husband, John Robert Middleton; five brothers; and a sister.
Surviving are five daughters, Jo Ann Williams Hash and husband Eddie of Pfafftown, Jean Williams Brannock and fiance Stamey Gobble of Advance, Lou Williams Dezern of Carolina Beach, Vicki Williams Fisher of Matthews and Susan Gail Williams and fiance Harold Andrews of Raleigh; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Funeral Home with burial followed in Forsyth Memorial Park.
Dorothy L. Tonnessen
Dorothy L. Tonnessen, 81, of Whiting, N.J., a church secretary until her retirement last June, died of heart complications March 6, the day before her 82nd birthday. She had been hospitalized at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem while visiting her daughter. She had resided in Whiting since 1980. She was married for 20 years to Gabriel H. Tonnessen, who died in 1969. She was born in Chicago to Danish immigrants and grew up in the Scandinavian neighborhoods of Brooklyn, N.Y. She worked as a secretary and met her husband on a ski weekend in Lake Placid, N.Y. The couple moved to Elizabeth, N.J., in 1952 and to Fanwood, N.J., in 1957. She resumed working as a secretary in 1960 and continued until she retired from Schering Plough in Kenilworth, N.J., in 1980. When she moved to Whiting, she began working part-time as the secretary for Ocean County Evangelical Free Church in Lakehurst, a position she relinquished only last June. She loved people, travel, laughter, independence and new experiences.
Surviving are two daughters, Joan Johnson of Clemmons and Susan Lutz and husband Ronald of Glenside, Pa.; four grandsons; and a great-grandson.
A memorial service was held at Ocean County Evangelical Free Church in Lakehurst, NJ.
Joy Jean Flynn Hill
Joy Jean Flynn Hill, 77, of Clemmons died March 27 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Forsyth County to the late William Franklin and Myrtle Geneva Crutchfield Flynn. She played basketball on the 1946 National Champion Hanes Hosiery team. She worked for several years at Hanes Hosiery before working briefly in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system. She retired from US Airways after 22 years of service in the reservations department.
Surviving are her husband, Edwin M. Hill of the home; a daughter, Barbara H. Cinnamon and husband Mike of Columbia, S.C.; a son, Frank Hill and wife Janet of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Philip Michael Cinnamon Jr. and wife Rosa of Potomac Falls, Va., Alicia Cinnamon Buffum and husband Matthew of Columbia, S.C., Jonathan Hill and Jennifer Hill of Kernersville; two great-grandsons, Guy Collier Buffum and Michael Thomas Cinnamon.
A graveside service was held at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown with Dr. Frank Grice officiating. A memorial service was held following the service at Ardmore United Methodist Church.
Walter Raymond Weir III
Walter Raymond Weir III, 49, of Kernersville died March 21 at the Durham VA Medical Center in Durham. He was born September 26, 1954, in Forsyth County to Walter Raymond Weir Jr. and Jean Hamrick Weir. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was a member of The Sprague Street Band. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Philip Weir.
Surviving are his parents of Clemmons; a son, Ryan Michael Weir of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Susan Hutchins of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Elizabeth Hall and husband Nelson of Monroe and Barbara Weir of Ocala, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Kim Weir of Lewisville; and five nieces and nephews, William Nelson Hall Jr., Lynne Hall, Philip Weir, Annie Weir and Ben Weir.
A graveside service was held at Hopewell Moravian Church Graveyard with Rev. Jeff Carter officiating.
Mamie Pointdexter Sales
Mamie Pointdexter Sales, 85, of Concord, widow of the late Bernie B. Sales, died March 25 at Northeast Medical Center in Concord. She was a member of Pitts Baptist Church in Concord. In addition to her husband Bernie, she was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Maggie Pointdexter; a grandson, David Nixon; a brother, Bill Pointdexter; and two sisters, Edith Walker and Shirley Watkins.
Surviving are her three children, Martha Nixon and husband Don of Concord, Mary Lynn Berry and husband Doug of Denver, N.C., and George Alan Sales of Charlotte; five siblings, Bob Pointdexter of Clemmons, Ethel Brewer of Winston-Salem, Violet Rothrock of Lewisville, Evelyn Boles of Winston-Salem and Betty Miller of Lewisville; six grandchildren, Darren Nixon of Harrisburg, Dana Absher of Concord, Jeff Baker of Denver, N.C., Ashley Price of Denver, N.C., Kyle Baker, U.S. Navy, of Beaufort, S.C., and Logan Sales of New Orleans, La.; and six great-grandchildren, Reise Absher, Christopher Price, Jordan Nixon, Hannah Price, Nicholas Baker and Peyton Nixon.
Funeral services were held at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel with Rev. Scott Davis and Rev. Don Davis officiating. Burial followed at Sharon Memorial Park.
Charlie Avery Stewart
Charlie Avery Stewart, 74, of Lewisville died March 22 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Forsyth County to Lindsay Avery and Etta Shelton Stewart. An active member of Immanuel Baptist Church, he retired from Western Electric Co. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mabel Stewart.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Magdalene Pegram Stewart; three sons, Michael Stewart and wife Rebecca, Paul Stewart and wife Joy and James Stewart and wife Tracee; six grandchildren, Jason Stewart, Karen Rondeau and husband Rob, Sherri Couch and husband Jason, Lindsay Stewart, Morgan Stewart and Ariana Stewart; a great-grandson, Robert Rondeau; two sisters, Violet Rumley and husband Richard and Ruby Loman and husband Herman; and a brother, Carl Stewart and wife Frances.
Funeral services were held at Immanuel Baptist Church with Pastor L.C. Taylor, Rev. Paul Stewart and Dr. Hoyle Bowman officiating, and burial followed in the church cemetery.
Lydia Wolf-Shults
Lydia Wolf-Shults, 54, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. died March 21 after a long illness. She retired from J.C. Penney Department Store, where she was the manager of the men’s department for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Donald Wolf.
Surviving are her husband, Frank Shults; a sister, Cynthia Wolf Ruble of Clemmons; two brothers, Rev. Jonathan Wolf of Franklin, N.C., and Rev. Timothy Wolf of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at the Wells Grove Baptist Church in Franklin. Her brothers officiated.
Virgil Delmar Rogers
Virgil Delmar Rogers, 68, of Lewisville died March 27 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 9, 1935, in Calhoun County, W.Va., son of the late Claude and Clara Cottrell Rogers. He was one of 14 children, with eight surviving.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Rogers; three children, Tamera Byrum (Pam Madden), Kristine Rogers (Mitchell Collins) and Joseph Rogers; six grandchildren, Matthew and Joseph Byrum, Ashley and B.J. Carpenter, Corey Rogers and MacKenzie Black.
A memorial service was held at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Margaret Vernell Craddock Dunn
Margaret Vernell Craddock Dunn, 72, of King died March 27 at Village Care Nursing Home. She was born March 8, 1932, in Stokes County to William Billy Craddock and Martha Ann Collins Craddock. She was a retired LPN at Forsyth Medical Center and a member of Pinnacle Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Algie Brown, Dollie Newman and Dorothy Craddock; and a brother, J.W. Craddock.
Surviving are two daughters, Glenda Shaw and husband Donald Shaw of Tobaccoville and Dawn Cobbler of Tobaccoville; two sons, Ronnie Tilley and wife Linda of Pfafftown and Michael Tilley and his fiance, Sondra, of King; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Delohi Jackson of Winston-Salem and Rachel Smith of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Merlin “Slim” Craddock of King.
Funeral services were held at Pinnacle Baptist Church with Rev. Carl Whitaker officiating.
Hugh Allen McBride
Hugh Allen McBride, 53, of Clemmons died March 25 at his home. He was born April 15, 1950, in Forsyth County to William Arthur and Kate Sain McBride. He was a member of Union United Methodist Church and an avid NASCAR fan. He was preceded in death by his father.
Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Janice McBride of the home; his mother, of Clemmons; a sister, Kay Cumby and husbnd Tommy of Yadkinville; a twin brother, Hubert McBride and wife Sandi of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Albert officiating.
Arnold Dean Smith Sr.
Arnold Dean Smith Sr., 68, of Advance died March 27 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born April 30, 1935, in Davie County, a son of O.H. and Lola Howard Smith. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and was retired from Modern Chevrolet in Winston-Salem.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Odom Smith of the home; a daughter, Teresa Barnhardt and husband Steve of High Point; a son, Arnold Dean Smith Jr. and wife Karen of Advance; two brothers, Hebert and Charles Smith, both of Advance; four sisters, Elsie Black of Lewisville, Ella Gray Smith of Mocksville, Jean West and Maxine Boger of Advance; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Advance with Rev. Mark Weekley, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Kenneth John Klahre
Kenneth John Klahre, 90, of Clemmons died March 24 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born August 19, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Alfred C. and Antoinette Fleck Klahre. He was the owner of Winsted Finance Co. in Winsted, Conn., for a number of years and was a former member of the Winsted Rotary Club. He was a past president of the Winsted YMCA and a former director of Winsted Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alfred Klahre; and two sisters, Antoinette K. Gibbs and Elizabeth K. Planamento.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Norton Klahre; a son, Donald N. Klahre of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; a daughter, Barbara K. Clay and husband Christopher of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Christine Armitage of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Michelle Oswald of Lake in the Hills, Ill., Ann Marie Klahre of Troy, Mich., and Ashley Clay of Clemmons.
A private family service was held with Dr. William Hoyle officiating, and burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
