After graduate work at Northwestern Law School, Chicago, Illinois, he specialized in tax law in Chicago and New York.

Senior and Command Pilot after an overseas tour, his assignment with the Eighth Air Force in England involved classified work in combat intelligence, where he flew B-17 aircraft 60 combat hours. On one 1944 bombing mission, his mangled B-17 Flying Fortress, with gaping holes in front and two engines missing, was publicized as one of the most disabled planes ever to return to base. (Business Telecom, Inc), North Carolina Natural Gas Corporation and Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, helping to bring the ski industry to North Carolina. His latest enthusiasm was his 746 acre North Carolina mountain, Hanging Rock.

He established his Raleigh law firm of Mitchiner, Andrews and Yeargan; and later was Of Counsel to Jordan, Price, Wall, Gray and Jones.
He was Senior Warden of the Church of the Good Shepherd and a director of numerous civic and charitable organizations including the Wake County Cancer Society, Greater Raleigh United Fund, Heart Fund, Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.
